Our top stories: The battle begins to save 350 jobs at this meat

:00:08.:00:10.

Unions and workers say the losses would be devastating for the town.

:00:11.:00:15.

And the Archbishop of Wales makes a historic announcement -

:00:16.:00:17.

Bosses have been meeting staff and union representatives at the 2

:00:18.:00:37.

Sisters meat processing factory in Merthyr Tydfil, where more

:00:38.:00:41.

than 350 workers are at risk of losing their jobs.

:00:42.:00:46.

The company employs 1100 people at the site but wants

:00:47.:00:48.

to move its packaging operation to another factory in Cornwall.

:00:49.:00:52.

With the latest, our business correspondent, Brian Meechan.

:00:53.:00:56.

Business was continuing at 2 Sisters today but workers were left

:00:57.:01:00.

wondering what the future would hold for them.

:01:01.:01:03.

The abattoir and cutting operations continue as usual but packing

:01:04.:01:07.

for steaks and other meats for retailers will move

:01:08.:01:10.

Ben Landers has been doing agency work here for a few months

:01:11.:01:17.

Agency staff are expected to be the first to go from

:01:18.:01:22.

Fairly worrying because there's nothing else around here for us.

:01:23.:01:28.

It's what they are going to do to implement the changes made there.

:01:29.:01:32.

What's the job situation like around here?

:01:33.:01:35.

The food industry can be notoriously difficult to operate in and often

:01:36.:01:43.

profits on products are actually quite small.

:01:44.:01:46.

That's because, when they're negotiating with supermarkets,

:01:47.:01:49.

it's the supermarkets that have the power.

:01:50.:01:52.

This site, for example, sells the vast majority

:01:53.:01:54.

of its product to just one supermarket chain.

:01:55.:01:58.

Unions are confused over the company's decision to move

:01:59.:02:01.

the packing business to Cornwall and want to know

:02:02.:02:04.

We want to sit down and have a full and formal consultation with them.

:02:05.:02:13.

We'll be looking to safeguard as many jobs as we can

:02:14.:02:16.

We'll also be looking at some counterproposals to

:02:17.:02:19.

The local Assembly Member raised an emergency question.

:02:20.:02:26.

If we talk about 350 people going, that's not just 350 people,

:02:27.:02:30.

that's the impact on the families of 350 people and, of course,

:02:31.:02:35.

So you can't just take 350 people out of work and that not have any

:02:36.:02:43.

impact on the community and the economy.

:02:44.:02:46.

Merthyr's been doing well in attracting

:02:47.:02:49.

Major developments, including General Dynamics,

:02:50.:02:52.

Tenecco-Walker and Trago Mills are promising to create

:02:53.:02:56.

almost 900 jobs, requiring a variety of skill levels.

:02:57.:03:01.

The unemployment rate has been falling.

:03:02.:03:04.

In the last five years, it's halved from 14%

:03:05.:03:07.

But that's still higher than the Welsh average.

:03:08.:03:13.

The Welsh Government invested ?1.2 million in this business

:03:14.:03:17.

Ministers, 2 Sisters and the unions say they'll work together now

:03:18.:03:22.

to try to minimise the impact of this decision and

:03:23.:03:25.

There will be 45 days of consultation to see

:03:26.:03:30.

what, if anything, can be done to save jobs.

:03:31.:03:34.

Four men have been charged with the murder of Mark Mason.

:03:35.:03:38.

The 48-year-old from Rhyl died after an incident at

:03:39.:03:41.

the Home Bargains car park in the town on Thursday.

:03:42.:03:44.

The men, all from Liverpool, appeared in front of Llandudno

:03:45.:03:47.

Fire and police services in Newport and Cardiff say they've been

:03:48.:03:52.

This mobile phone footage shows an incident in the Pill area

:03:53.:03:58.

Meanwhile, fire crews in Cardiff were attacked twice with fireworks

:03:59.:04:03.

as they tried to put out a bonfire in a Grangetown park.

:04:04.:04:08.

An internal inquiry has cleared two North Wales police officers

:04:09.:04:12.

of failing to follow up an allegation against

:04:13.:04:15.

Gordon Anglesea, who was convicted last month of sexually assaulting

:04:16.:04:19.

National Crime Agency investigators discovered that,

:04:20.:04:23.

in 2002, one of Anglesea's victims had named him as an abuser

:04:24.:04:27.

but records indicated officers took no further action.

:04:28.:04:33.

It has been investigated from a misconduct perspective and no

:04:34.:04:37.

evidence of misconduct has been found, certainly to this point.

:04:38.:04:42.

There was going to be no sweeping under the carpet of anything,

:04:43.:04:45.

as far as I was concerned, and I've made it very clear, too,

:04:46.:04:48.

that any allegations of misconduct will be investigated.

:04:49.:04:51.

They will be investigated thoroughly and objectively.

:04:52.:04:54.

Wales has its first ever woman bishop.

:04:55.:04:57.

Canon Joanna Penberthy says she's immensely humbled to take up the job

:04:58.:05:01.

of Bishop of St David's in what's been described as an historic moment

:05:02.:05:05.

A decision to allow women to become bishops was taken in 2013.

:05:06.:05:11.

For the past 1500 years, prayers have been said

:05:12.:05:18.

here at St David's Cathedral, but today, this ancient

:05:19.:05:21.

site of Christianity saw history in the making.

:05:22.:05:26.

Wales had elected its first female bishop.

:05:27.:05:29.

Since yesterday morning, members of the Church

:05:30.:05:31.

in Wales Electoral College had been meeting to discuss their choice.

:05:32.:05:36.

And at lunchtime, the Archbishop of Wales broke the news.

:05:37.:05:40.

The Bishop Elect of St David's is Canon Joanna Penberthy.

:05:41.:05:45.

Canon Joanna Penberthy is 56 years old and was one of the first women

:05:46.:05:49.

to be ordained as a priest in Wales back in 1997.

:05:50.:05:54.

She's currently the rector of Glan Ithon in Llandrindod Wells.

:05:55.:05:58.

She knows St David's well having already spent 11 years as a canon

:05:59.:06:02.

She also worked in the dioceses of Llandaff and St Asaph

:06:03.:06:07.

and previously served in Bath and Wells.

:06:08.:06:11.

It is an historic moment but what's important to remember

:06:12.:06:14.

is that Joanna Penberthy is an enormously gifted priest.

:06:15.:06:20.

She is intellectually able, she preaches well,

:06:21.:06:23.

she engages with people, she's able to relate

:06:24.:06:25.

Women bishops in the Church in Wales remains a highly sensitive issue.

:06:26.:06:31.

Church law was only changed here three years ago

:06:32.:06:34.

and the Reverend Jenny Wigley was one of the driving forces behind it.

:06:35.:06:38.

I sent her a one-word e-mail this afternoon.

:06:39.:06:41.

I don't know when she'll get time to open it but it

:06:42.:06:44.

And there were more exclamation marks than letters in that word.

:06:45.:06:47.

Canon Jo will be Bishop Elect until her appointment

:06:48.:06:50.

is formally confirmed by the Archbishop at a sacred

:06:51.:06:54.

She will then be consecrated as a bishop here at Llandaff Cathedral,

:06:55.:07:01.

the seat of the current Archbishop of Wales, on the 21st of January

:07:02.:07:07.

before being enthroned in St David's the following month.

:07:08.:07:10.

Football and Aaron Ramsey is back in the Wales squad to face Serbia

:07:11.:07:18.

in their World Cup qualifier in Cardiff on the 12th of November.

:07:19.:07:22.

The Arsenal midfielder played 75 minutes in the Champions League last

:07:23.:07:25.

night but missed Wales' opening win against Moldova and the draws

:07:26.:07:29.

with Austria and Georgia because of a hamstring injury.

:07:30.:07:34.

He's a huge part of what we're trying to do.

:07:35.:07:42.

Obviously, with the talent he possesses, he is a massive part

:07:43.:07:46.

It was pleasing to see that he got so much game time last night.

:07:47.:07:55.

A look at the weather now and, Derek, it's feeling

:07:56.:07:57.

Tonight, much of the country dry. Just the odd shower in the far north

:07:58.:08:21.

and west with some cloud rolling in. Widespread ground frost, air frost

:08:22.:08:27.

in the Brecon Beacons, so actually called start tomorrow morning. Right

:08:28.:08:32.

in the south and east for a while but cloud will be on the increase.

:08:33.:08:36.

Across the rest of the UK, the best of the weather across the South and

:08:37.:08:42.

east of England, dry and bright. Further north and west, more

:08:43.:08:46.

unsettled and cloudy outbreaks of rain, heavy showers and breezy and

:08:47.:08:52.

chilly. Close to home, it will be bright and places tomorrow afternoon

:08:53.:08:57.

but cloudy then today, patchy rain and showers about. Having said that,

:08:58.:09:05.

Monmouth may well stay dry. Tomorrow evening, rain and showers will

:09:06.:09:10.

spread south eastwards. Dry and clear after midnight. Not as cold as

:09:11.:09:14.

the night but on the chilly side still and chilly on Friday with a

:09:15.:09:19.

mixture of sunshine and scattered showers, some dry weather but rain

:09:20.:09:23.

and heavy showers coming into the North and West later in the

:09:24.:09:29.

afternoon. For a weekend, we are in for a cold arctic plunge, northerly

:09:30.:09:34.

winds bringing lower temperatures, a few showers in the north and west, a

:09:35.:09:39.

dusting of snow likely on the mountain tops in Snowdonia.

:09:40.:09:42.

Otherwise, a lot of dry in clear weather over the weekend. Blue sky

:09:43.:09:48.

and sunshine but the thermals will definitely come in handy!

:09:49.:09:50.

The Wales Report is up next but that's Wales Today.

:09:51.:09:52.

From me, Derek, and everyone on the late team, goodnight.

:09:53.:10:00.
