Good evening.

Welsh Labour politicians are calling for party unity

after Jeremy Corbyn's re-election as Labour leader.

His challenger, the Pontypridd MP Owen Smith, secured

38.2% of the vote.

From Liverpool, here's our parliamentary correspondent,

David Cornock.

I am therefore, conference, delighted to declare Jeremy Corbyn

elected leader of the Labour Party.

Great news for these Corbyn supporters in Cardiff,

less good news for Owen Smith.

But the newly re-elected leader had warm words for the challenger.

I want to say thank you to Owen Smith as well.

Owen, we've had an interesting summer of debate all over

the country, thank you very much for all of that,

for the good discussions and good-humoured debates we've had,

which no doubt we'll continue, because we're part of the same

Labour family, and that's how it's always going to be.

Jeremy Corbyn says he accepts he has a responsibility to unite Labour.

But he says that's a responsibility shared by the party's MPs,

many of whom have said they have no confidence in his leadership.

Owen Smith has said he wouldn't rejoin the Shadow Cabinet.

Although he'll reflect on his future role, he stands by his criticism

of Mr Corbyn's leadership.

Jeremy's great challenge now is having won the party,

he needs to win the country.

That's obviously a much bigger challenge, a much longer challenge,

and we will all need to figure out what our roles are in assisting him

in taking Labour back to power.

Another Welsh former member of Jeremy Corbyn's top team

could well return.

I think what's very important is that we have a really good,

representative cross-section of people at all levels.

And it would be on that sort of basis that I would, myself,

be prepared to serve.

I certainly would not want to be part of something

which is factional.

Even those loyal to the leader recognise that he needs to do

more to unite Labour.

We can't carry on as we have done for the last 12 months,

because the polls show the public don't like divided parties.

So there's a special personal responsibility on Jeremy,

as the elected leader, in order to make those changes

and those compromises to unite the party.

Back in Cardiff, Jeremy Corbyn supporters were jubilant.

He's reaching sections of the population, I think.

He's bringing them into politics, they're coming to the rallies,

they're joining the party, they're listening to the debates.

This is fresh, this is new, this is very positive.

Jeremy Corbyn has now won over his party twice.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said that was a remarkable achievement,

but winning over the country will be more of a challenge.

Cutting the higher rate of income tax in Wales would raise additional

revenue for the country, according to research

by Cardiff Business School.

A new report says cutting the rate from 40 to 30% in Wales

would encourage higher earners to move here,

and could raise ?500 million a year after ten years.

A 33-year-old man arrested in Cardiff on Thursday

on suspicion of terror offences is still being questioned

at a central London police station.

Police sources indicated yesterday the arrest relates to a possible

attack within the UK.

Two houses in Cardiff have been searched by police.

A concert is being held tonight to celebrate

the 90th anniversary of the Stiwt Theatre, near Wrexham.

The theatre was built with money raised by local miners.

They included the grandfather of the conductor Owain Arwel Hughes,

who's the patron of tonight's concert.

It was built in 1926.

The local miners, despite being on strike, were giving 2p a week out

of their wages towards the funding.

And the place was eventually opened September the 26th, I believe, 1926.

Football, and in the Premier League, Swansea City lost 3-1 at home

to Manchester City, who remain unbeaten so far this season.

Better news for Cardiff City though, they beat Rotherham 2-1

with Rickie Lambert scoring twice within five minutes.

And at the Racecourse, the derby between

Wrexham and Chester ended in a 0-0 draw in the National League.

Rugby, and in the Guinness Pro 12,

the Cardiff Blues are currently leading away to Zebre.

The first half is just drawing to a close.

The Scarlets, who are looking for their first win of the season,

face Connacht later, the kick off's at 7:35.

A look at the weather forecast now, and wind and rain will continue

to sweep eastwards during the night, affecting the whole

country by midnight.

Tomorrow will be sunny but rather blustery with thundery showers.
