National weather.

Good evening. As we approach the

weekend there are signs that mother

nature may well release her win grip

across the UK. But that said, look

at the Highlands this afternoon,

where temperatures barely got above

freezing, and there is still 15

centimetres of lying snow. In parts

of Hertfordshire and the south-east

we had some sunshine. The snow is

melting quite nicely. The weekend

snowman now a distant memory. It was

a mess today, however you look at

it. Yes, we had some sunshine to the

east, but there were bands of

showers and the showers had a wintry

flavour, rain and sleet and snow

mixed in, and they are moving their

way south and east. They will

continue to do so through the night

to night, accompanied by blustery

winds. Behind it, clear skies, some

ice could form particularly through

Northern England and Scotland.

Temperatures close to freezing. A

cold start, there will be showers

around but let's look at a Taione in

more detail. A slightly quieter day

for Scotland. Showers hopefully few

and far between. The winds swing

around to a northerly direction,

more showers coming in off the North

Sea and similar in eastern England

as well. Along with the showers

across the North we'll see one or

two down through Wales and in

south-west England. Elsewhere,

hopefully the cloud should break up

quite nicely and will start to see

some sunshine coming through. A cold

morning for many of us first thing.

As we go through the day the

northerly wind will continue to

drive in the showers across the East

Coast and one or two to the

south-west. Sandwiched in between

the two, the cloud will break up and

the sunshine will come through. Not

looking particularly warm, 4-8d,

with a few wintry showers

particularly to the north-west of

the great Glen. As we go through the

night it looks likely we'll see a

widespread frost. A cold night

developing across the country, with

the exception out towards the West

and I'll come onto that in a moment.

The cold air stays with us for the

start of the weekend. Looking out of

the south-west, the winds change

direction yet again. It will drive

in milder air across the country. A

change into Sunday. Saturday starts

off cold and frosty. Northern

Ireland, Wales and south-west

England a little more cloudy, more

breeze and a few scattered showers,

6-8d here but despite the frost and

the sunshine coming through,

temperatures will struggle, 2-3 to

the north and east. As we move into
