top stories: The case against Castro. Prosecutors say they will

seek murder charges against the man suspected of imprisoning three women

:00:18.:00:25.

for a decade. This child kidnapper operated a torture chamber in the

heart of our city. The horrific brutality and torture that the

victims endured for a decade is beyond comprehension.

breaking news from Bangladesh where rescue workers say they have found a

:01:17.:01:23.

survivor in the wreckage of the building that collapsed 17 days ago.

:01:23.:01:33.
:01:33.:01:37.

More than 1,000 people are now known to have died. Rescuers found a woman

:01:37.:01:44.

in the debris and she waved her hand. Bangladesh's chief fire chief

:01:44.:01:48.

says the woman appears to have been trapped in an air pocket between a

:01:48.:01:52.

beam and a column. We will bring you more details as they come to hand.

:01:52.:01:58.

Very good to have some good news from the area.

:01:58.:02:02.

The man accused of kidnapping three women and holding them hostage for a

:02:02.:02:07.

decade could face the death penalty in the United States. Prosecutors in

:02:07.:02:10.

Cleveland say Ariel Castro faces hundreds, possibly thousands of

:02:10.:02:15.

charges. One for each act of sexual violence allegedly committed against

:02:16.:02:19.

the women who were imprisoned in his home. They are also pursuing charges

:02:19.:02:26.

of aggravated murder over claims that he forced his hostages to

:02:26.:02:30.

miscarry. Grim details of the women's

:02:30.:02:35.

decade-long ordeal between the walls of this suburban house are slowly

:02:35.:02:41.

starting to emerge. With their alleged captor, Ariel Castro, now

:02:42.:02:47.

the one in captivity, it's been claimed one of the women was

:02:47.:02:50.

impregnated several times and then forced to miscarry. Which, as well

:02:50.:02:55.

as rape and kidnapping, would mean aggravated murder charges, according

:02:55.:03:01.

to the local prosecutor, charges which carry the death penalty.

child kidnapper operated a torture chamber and private prison in the

:03:05.:03:10.

heart of our city. The horrific brutality and torture that the

:03:10.:03:17.

victims endured for a decade is beyond comprehension. One of those

:03:17.:03:24.

victims, Gina DeJesus, enjoyed a rapturous homecoming. During her cap

:03:24.:03:34.
:03:34.:03:34.

-- captivity, her mother would pass Ariel Castro on the street and

:03:34.:03:41.

exchange pleasantries. I pasted by that street. I was two blocks away

:03:41.:03:51.
:03:51.:03:51.

from her. Ariel Castro's mother has asked for forgiveness for those held

:03:52.:03:55.

captive. "My son is sick" she told reporters. "I had nothing to do with

:03:55.:04:00.

what he did." At the same time as three families are being reunited,

:04:00.:04:07.

another is being torn apart. At least four people have been

:04:07.:04:11.

killed in a bomb in north-west Pakistan on the eve of the country's

:04:11.:04:18.

general election. Another explosion damaged the offices of the Pakistans

:04:18.:04:26.

peoples party -- of the Pakistan peoples party. Tomorrow's poll marks

:04:27.:04:36.
:04:37.:04:37.

an historic moment. Live to Pakistan now and to Lyse Doucet. It looks

:04:37.:04:42.

very calm and peaceful where you are now. It is a day of reflection. But

:04:42.:04:46.

reports of more violence and fears about tomorrow, election day on

:04:46.:04:54.

Saturday? Yes, this seems to be a country of two elections. Great

:04:54.:04:57.

enthusiasm and determination to vote in some parts of the country. In

:04:57.:05:05.

others, a lot of fear and violence. These are being described both as

:05:05.:05:09.

the bloodiest elections in Pakistan's history, but also the

:05:09.:05:12.

first youth elections. Some 40 million young Pakistanis will be

:05:13.:05:20.

eligible to vote for the first time. The big question is will there be

:05:20.:05:28.

attacks? Pakistani also be watching, but so will be the many

:05:28.:05:36.

international Pakistani election observers. The chief observer for

:05:36.:05:39.

the European Union is with me. You did put out a statement saying you

:05:39.:05:42.

were concerned about the level of violence. It has been so high it

:05:42.:05:44.

would be hard to call this election free and fair? It has been high in

:05:45.:05:54.
:05:55.:05:56.

parts of the country. In Punjab, most of the seats are contested.

:05:56.:06:04.

Karachi has been affected. There are two more relevant parties standing

:06:04.:06:14.
:06:14.:06:18.

now. There is this enthusiasm to hold this election. There is a will

:06:19.:06:25.

of all contesting parties to have the elections held. You were an

:06:25.:06:30.

observer in 2008. Are you seeing some improvements this time in terms

:06:30.:06:40.
:06:40.:06:40.

of the election machinery? Indeed. There are certain discussions. It is

:06:40.:06:50.
:06:50.:06:55.

not about massive vote-rigging. We have an independent e electricion

:06:55.:07:03.

commission that doesn't follow the orders of the ruling party. There is

:07:03.:07:07.

high respect for the e electricion Commissioner. -- Election

Commissioner. I understand of the 70,000 polling stations, half are

:07:16.:07:20.

:07:20.:07:29.

whether or not the voting day itself is without incident? Well, we are

to you again, but thank you very much for joining us on the eve of

:07:54.:08:03.

these critical elections in Pakistan's history. They are

:08:03.:08:07.

unpredictable. No-one can say with certainty who is going to win and

:08:07.:08:10.

that has added another layer of excitement. We will continue to

:08:10.:08:12.

watch the proceedings today and tomorrow and, of course, when the

:08:12.:08:15.

results come in. Thank you very much. We will be joining you then to

:08:15.:08:16.

keep you up-to-date on the election in Pakistan.

:08:16.:08:23.

More now on our top story. Rescue workers finding a survivor in the

:08:23.:08:29.

rubble of the building that collapsed 17 days ago. Now known to

:08:29.:08:34.

have killed more than 1,000 people. Rescue workers today have found a

:08:34.:08:44.
:08:44.:08:45.

survivor. For more on that, we are joined by our correspondent from the

:08:45.:08:48.

BBC Bengali Service. Tell us any more news that you have about this

:08:48.:08:55.

woman who appears to have been pulled out alive? Yes, a few moments

:08:55.:09:04.

ago, the woman she was rescued from the rubble and now she has been

:09:04.:09:06.

taken to the combined military hospital nearby. When I came here

:09:07.:09:12.

two hours back, the rescue operation for people who are co-ordinated this

:09:12.:09:16.

found the woman wo was screaming from the rubble. Within a few

:09:16.:09:23.

minutes, hundreds of rescue workers encircled that area. They cleared

:09:23.:09:28.

the rubble from there. The rescue parties brought her out of the

:09:28.:09:31.

rubble. Now she has been taken to the combined military hospital. The

:09:31.:09:37.

people in charge of this operation, they were extremely surprised to see

:09:37.:09:47.
:09:47.:09:52.

this development. Two weeks back, they never believed that anybody

:09:52.:09:55.

might be found inside alive. It is a miracle. Now they are going slow to

:09:55.:09:59.

see if there is anybody alive inside the rubble. They were telling us

:09:59.:10:09.
:10:09.:10:11.

that they might rap up the rescue operation within a few days. Now,

:10:11.:10:14.

they are going very slow because the woman was rescued a few moments

:10:14.:10:18.

back, so it gave them hope, if anybody remains alive in the rubble,

:10:18.:10:25.

that is why they are again taking it very cautiously. After such terrible

:10:25.:10:30.

news, a death toll of 1,000 we are being told, it is wonderful to have

:10:30.:10:35.

news of somebody still being pulled out alive. Now, we did see pictures

:10:35.:10:39.

of bulldozers there. I understand that rescue workers have been told

:10:39.:10:43.

to stop operating heavy machinery in case someone else is under the

:10:43.:10:52.

rubble alive? Yes. They are using heavy machinery, but they are being

:10:52.:10:56.

cautious right now. They are going a bit slow. They are using the heavy

:10:56.:11:01.

machinery. They are doing it manually right now. Still, mainly

:11:01.:11:09.

people in the area, they are saying people are still missing. In each

:11:09.:11:16.

area, the rescue team involved are saying the chances of finding

:11:16.:11:20.

someone alive after eight or nine days is very low. But now this

:11:20.:11:26.

miracle has happened. A few of the heavy machinery has been taken out

:11:26.:11:35.

of the site. Some drops of hope there in Dhaka. Thank you very much

:11:35.:11:43.

for joining us. Now it may be one of the biggest

:11:43.:11:52.

bank thefts in history. A gang armed not with guns or knives, not wearing

:11:52.:11:56.

masks, but with old hotel cards and laptops. They managed to steal more

:11:56.:12:00.

than $45 million in the space of a few hours. That is according the

:12:00.:12:03.

prosecutors in the United States. We have been speaking to our technology

:12:03.:12:10.

correspondent, Rory Cellan-Jones. I asked him how the gang did it.

:12:10.:12:13.

really frightening things. They basically got the money out of cash

:12:13.:12:16.

machines. That is frightening. More frightening is the fact that to do

:12:16.:12:25.

that, they hacked into the databases of at least two financial

:12:25.:12:27.

institutions, credit card processors. What they then did was

:12:27.:12:33.

acquire, according to this document, this indictment, the PIN numbers and

:12:33.:12:37.

the details relating to some of these debit cards, these debit cards

:12:37.:12:41.

that were already loaded with cash. They got the PIN numbers. They

:12:41.:12:46.

changed the limits of the amount of cash you could withdraw on them and

:12:46.:12:51.

they then sent that information to their associates around the world

:12:51.:12:55.

who immediately launched this kind of concerted attack on these cash

:12:55.:12:58.

machines. We shouldn't applaud crime. It is quite ingenious. How

:12:58.:13:03.

common is this kind of thing? very, very scary. We don't really

:13:03.:13:10.

know how common this is. Obviously, banks are not that keen on telling

:13:10.:13:14.

the world when they have been hacked. What is remarkable about

:13:14.:13:19.

this is that we hear a lot about hacking and about what are called

:13:19.:13:29.

"denial of service attacks" on major websites and banks. Usually, they

:13:29.:13:32.

don't worry no -- and no financial service information has been

:13:32.:13:36.

released. In this case, they got to the crown jewels, that enabled them

:13:36.:13:40.

to go to banks, stick a card in a machine and walk away with a lot of

:13:40.:13:47.

money. Rory Cellan-Jones. Do stay with us on BBC World News.

:13:47.:13:53.

Still to come: A new challenge for Somalia's doctors as violence

:13:53.:14:03.
:14:03.:14:08.

subsides in the country. You might think of Paris when you

:14:08.:14:14.

think of Chanel, but the fashion house is spreading its wings. And

:14:14.:14:19.

its creative designer is known for his extravagant star-studded shows

:14:20.:14:26.

in locations vibing Venice and Moscow. Now, Singapore. It is the

:14:26.:14:30.

first time that the designs have been seen on the catwalk in an Asian

:14:30.:14:40.
:14:40.:14:40.

city. Dressed for the part, night to celebrate macro-dancer's influence

:14:40.:14:47.

on the world. The fashionable elite were on a select a guest list

:14:47.:14:51.

including celebrities and international fashion press who

:14:51.:14:55.

entered a reconstructed abandoned building for the unveiling of the

:14:55.:14:59.

new collection. It's the first time in the city has been chosen for such

:14:59.:15:03.

a show and the choice reflects the rising influence of Asian consumers

:15:03.:15:11.

of luxury brands, a reality the creative director is too aware of.

:15:11.:15:15.

Fashion is important for everybody, therefore they love fashion, they

:15:16.:15:25.
:15:26.:15:25.

love the European labels. Asian markets have been growing in the

:15:26.:15:30.

double digits for macro-company and its European counterparts. Europeans

:15:30.:15:34.

economic problems have meant many luxury brands are now looking to

:15:34.:15:38.

Asia. Even though the clothes out of the reach of many here, not so for

:15:38.:15:47.

Asia's wealthy buyers. Last time he was in Singapore there was the

:15:47.:15:50.

1980s, and how I have a T-shirt autographed by him so I'm dressing

:15:50.:15:58.

up to pay tribute to him tonight. It's amazing that the show was in

:15:58.:16:02.

Singapore. It reaffirms Singapore's position as a fashion capital of

:16:02.:16:10.

Asia. Not just Asia, but globally. Seems like this fashion show are

:16:10.:16:15.

commonplace in fashion capitals like London, Paris and New York but

:16:15.:16:20.

increasingly, they are happening in places like Singapore. As Asia's

:16:20.:16:24.

economies grow and Europe starts to slow down, luxury fashion houses

:16:24.:16:27.

like macro-company and others are increasingly looking to the Asian

:16:27.:16:37.
:16:37.:16:46.

consumer to boost sales. This is BBC World News. The latest headlines.

may have been there for ten minutes. He was eventually pulled into a

:17:55.:18:04.

thoughts and prayers are with Bart Simpson's family, his wife and kids.

:18:04.:18:10.

And also with the rest of the team-mates. Andrew Simpson was 36,

is probably optimistic. The deterioration of the situation in

:19:07.:19:13.

Syria in terms of the Israeli air strikes, concerns about the possible

:19:13.:19:17.

use of poison, is concentrating minds more. We can see it coming

:19:17.:19:22.

together of events, John Kerry coming this week, Syria high on the

agenda, David Cameron visiting today, Syria high on the agenda and

then David Cameron going to Washington next week to meet Barack

Obama and Syria is high on the agenda and then peace talks later

:19:33.:19:38.

this month and then the G8 summit in Northern Ireland next month is an

:19:38.:19:41.

opportunity several times for some of the key players in this to

discuss Syria and they all realise the urgency. Of course, that does

:19:45.:19:48.

not mean it is necessarily going to produce a peaceful result because

:19:48.:19:55.

it's a very bloody civil war and President Assad is entrenched and

:19:55.:19:58.

the opposition in Syria is becoming entrenched as well but everyone now

:21:56.:21:59.

problem. As security improves in Mogadishu, they are treating fewer

:21:59.:22:02.

victims of violence. But doctors at the capital's Medina Hospital say

:22:02.:22:04.

they have noticed an increase in patients with routine conditions

:22:04.:22:07.

like appendicitis or hernias. It's a new challenge for them, as Lu Yang

:22:07.:22:17.
:22:17.:22:18.

reports. Bullet wounds, shellshock, shrapnel injuries. They have seen

:22:18.:22:22.

many of the horrors of Somalia 's war at the macro-hospital in

:22:23.:22:27.

Mogadishu. Supported by the International Red Cross, it has the

:22:27.:22:31.

biggest emergency care unit in the history and used to admit thousands

:22:31.:22:36.

of patients per year but since 2011, security in the capital has been

:22:36.:22:40.

improving. And staff are finally seeing a reduction in the number of

:22:40.:22:48.

war injuries. You can use it as a thermometer, the security of the

:22:48.:22:56.

city. Seeing how much has decreased, the wounded people,

:22:56.:23:01.

meaning the situation has improved. As it returns to normality, after

:23:01.:23:07.

more than two decades of conflict, the doctors are facing a different

:23:07.:23:10.

set of challenges. Civilians are now flocking into the hospital with more

:23:10.:23:15.

everyday complaints like hernias, cysts and appendicitis. Less

:23:15.:23:21.

critical cases are seen here in these tents. In the maternity ward,

:23:21.:23:25.

this woman has come to give birth to her seventh child and until

:23:25.:23:28.

recently, she wouldn't have been able to make the 300 kilometre

:23:28.:23:33.

journey here. I live far away and was not expecting to come to the

:23:33.:23:37.

hospital. The baby was in danger so they took media to deliver for the

:23:38.:23:43.

operation. The hospital is facing an unusual problem, they are not

:23:43.:23:48.

equipped to deal with routine procedures. The problem Somalia is

facing if we don't have well-equipped intensive care units

:23:53.:24:01.

to treat patients so I think that's what's most needed right now.

:24:01.:24:04.

International Red Cross and world health organisation are training

:24:04.:24:07.

healthcare workers across central Somalia to help deal with these new

:24:07.:24:12.

conditions they are seeing. Violence in Somalia has affected the lives of

:24:12.:24:16.

tens of thousands of people over the years and as the country stabilises,

:24:16.:24:20.

the hope is that medical staff will, at last, be able to

:24:20.:24:27.

concentrate on the everyday needs of their patients. Now a remarkable

:24:27.:24:31.

story from Brazil. A woman has survived being shot in the mouth

:24:32.:24:36.

with a harpoon. For those of you who are squeamish, you may want to look

:24:36.:24:40.

away. Her husband was cleaning his spear gun when it went off, hitting

:24:41.:24:46.

her spine, just below her skull. Doctors say the harpoon came within

:24:46.:24:50.

one centimetre of killing her that they now expect her to make a full

:24:50.:24:54.

recovery and an investigation is underway but police think it was an

:24:54.:24:59.

accident. It's become a symbol of environmental pollution in Mexico

:24:59.:25:04.

City, an island made entirely out of empty plastic bottles. Complete with

:25:04.:25:11.

a house on top. A man collected more than 100,000 used bottles, they will

:25:11.:25:14.

put under planks of wood which constitute the Islands foundation

:25:14.:25:19.

and then covered in sand. Every day he rose his bow to the shore to

:25:20.:25:23.

promote his project to people from all over the world and spread

:25:23.:25:31.

environmental awareness. A reminder of our incredible top story. Rescue

:25:31.:25:34.

workers in Bangladesh say they have found a survivor in the wreckage of

:25:34.:25:40.

a building that collapsed 17 days ago. They heard a woman screaming, "

:25:40.:25:45.

I am here" from inside the debris and they were able to pull her out.

:25:45.:25:48.

This was a moment when they took out of the rubble and into an

:25:48.:25:52.

ambulance. More than 1000 people are now known to have died when the

:25:52.:25:58.

story structure came down. A fire service official said the woman

:25:58.:26:02.

could have survived by eating food reserves and drinking water that had

:26:02.:26:06.

been pumped into the building. We are hearing that she does not have

:26:06.:26:13.

any serious injuries. She was able to talk to rescue workers. Soldiers

:26:13.:26:16.

at the site described her as being in remarkable good shape despite her

:26:16.:26:24.

ordeal. We have heard from a BBC reporter at the site that heavy

:26:24.:26:28.

machinery is now not being used, just in case there are further

:26:28.:26:34.

survivors. They are really in need of some good news with, the number

:26:34.:26:40.
