This is BBC World News. We have been bringing you special coverage on the | :00:00. | :00:16.
BBC of the Oscar Pistorius trial. The court is adjourning for a | :00:17. | :00:19.
five-minute break. We have been hearing in the last few minutes from | :00:20. | :00:28.
Oscar Pistorius about the day, the run-up to the of Reeva Steenkamp, | :00:29. | :00:37.
describing an evening at home with his girlfriend, having dinner, how | :00:38. | :00:41.
they were then in the bedroom. It was the day before Valentine's Day | :00:42. | :00:45.
and he described a valentines gift he had bought for her and one which | :00:46. | :00:55.
she had bought for him. She actually opened -- he actually opened at last | :00:56. | :00:57.
year, after the shooting. Getting very emotional at the end. We have | :00:58. | :01:03.
been hearing the defence lawyer questioning Oscar Pistorius. It | :01:04. | :01:06.
started a couple of hours ago, in fact, with Oscar Pistorius reading | :01:07. | :01:18.
out a number of Whatsapp read messages that the couple had sent | :01:19. | :01:24.
each other. Relationship details coming out. A lot of loving messages | :01:25. | :01:27.
between the two them, also interesting messages from Reeva | :01:28. | :01:33.
Steenkamp, where she said, I am scared of you at times. She was | :01:34. | :01:38.
clearly worried about the jealousy and possessiveness of Oscar | :01:39. | :01:46.
Pistorius. Detailing a number of conversations they have had. In one | :01:47. | :01:49.
text message, she had to ask for permission to wear a leopard rent | :01:50. | :01:55.
dress. The pair had been dating for about three months when Reeva | :01:56. | :01:59.
Steenkamp was shot. -- leopard print dress. The defence lawyer clearly | :02:00. | :02:05.
tried to establish that this was a loving relationship, although | :02:06. | :02:08.
clearly one where there was some tension. Oscar Pistorius described | :02:09. | :02:12.
how they have both come out of quite difficult relationships. We will | :02:13. | :02:23.
come back to that trial at Pretoria, the Oscar Pistorius trial, it will | :02:24. | :02:26.
resume in the next few minutes. We will return to South Africa for that | :02:27. | :02:34.
court case as soon as we can. We are going to bring you a quick | :02:35. | :02:39.
look at some of the other news today on BBC World. Russia has warned | :02:40. | :02:43.
Ukraine to stop military preparations in the south and east | :02:44. | :02:46.
of the country, saying they could start a civil war. Ukrainian | :02:47. | :02:50.
authorities have arrested dozens of people in Kharkiv after pro-Russian | :02:51. | :02:57.
asked -- activists declared independence. There has been a wave | :02:58. | :03:03.
of demonstrations, with protesters seizing buildings in Kharkiv, | :03:04. | :03:08.
Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukraine said that Russia would be making an | :03:09. | :03:12.
historic mistake of it intervened. This was the scene in Kharkiv, where | :03:13. | :03:16.
the Ukrainian authorities say they have since retaken a building and | :03:17. | :03:19.
arrested 70 people. The acting President said that they would be | :03:20. | :03:25.
treated as terrorists and criminals. Russia has warned Ukraine to stop | :03:26. | :03:28.
military activity. Steve Rosenberg has been monitoring events for us | :03:29. | :03:31.
today. In Donetsk, talks have been going on | :03:32. | :03:36.
through the night between pro-Russian activists that had | :03:37. | :03:39.
seized the governor 's building here, and the authorities. There are | :03:40. | :03:43.
reports that some agreement has been reached, that there would be no | :03:44. | :03:45.
attempt to reclaim the building by force. That is as long as the | :03:46. | :03:51.
activists barricaded inside agreed to give up any weapons they have. | :03:52. | :03:56.
Meanwhile, the war of words between East and West over Ukraine | :03:57. | :04:00.
continues. A spokesman for the White House in Washington warned Russia | :04:01. | :04:05.
against overtly or covertly moving into eastern Ukraine and claimed | :04:06. | :04:11.
there was strong evidence to suggest that some of the pro-Russian | :04:12. | :04:14.
activists here in eastern Ukraine had been paid and were not local. | :04:15. | :04:20.
Russia disputes that and rejects accusations that it is orchestrating | :04:21. | :04:25.
instability here in eastern Ukraine and fanning the flames of seven test | :04:26. | :04:33.
sentiment. It has accused the West of the responsible for the | :04:34. | :04:38.
instability. The West forced Ukraine, according to Moscow, to | :04:39. | :04:43.
choose between East and West. Well, the latest developments in | :04:44. | :04:48.
Ukraine are causing trouble in Parliament. Deputies in Ukraine's | :04:49. | :04:52.
Parliament ended up in a brawl today, as disagreement broke out | :04:53. | :04:57.
when deputies from the far right were accused of playing into | :04:58. | :04:59.
Russia's hands by adopting extreme tactics. The disagreement turned | :05:00. | :05:06.
into quite a brawl. Teams searching for the missing | :05:07. | :05:09.
Malaysian plane say they have not picked up any more signals which | :05:10. | :05:13.
could taken from the black box playing locator. Two septal signals | :05:14. | :05:17.
were located over the weekend, but they are waiting for more contact | :05:18. | :05:19.
before deploying an underwater search craft. | :05:20. | :05:26.
As we are now looking for the locator beacon underwater, we still | :05:27. | :05:31.
maintain the surface search for any debris that might be out there. We | :05:32. | :05:34.
continue to be optimistic. The longer this goes, the harder it | :05:35. | :05:40.
gets. We have eliminated a lot of the area and we are continuing to | :05:41. | :05:44.
search the area every day. British television presenter and model | :05:45. | :05:49.
Peaches Geldof has died suddenly at the age of 25. | :05:50. | :05:52.
Police say her death is being treated as unexplained. She was the | :05:53. | :06:04.
daughter of a singer and founder of Bob Geldof. Her mother died of a | :06:05. | :06:09.
heroin overdose. This report contains flash photography. | :06:10. | :06:13.
Born into fame, no stranger to tragedy. Peaches Geldof, a daughter, | :06:14. | :06:19.
sister, wife and mother, now dead at just 25. A private ambulance leaving | :06:20. | :06:26.
her home on Monday evening. Police had been called their earlier in the | :06:27. | :06:29.
day. Her death, they say, was not suspicious, but it was sudden and | :06:30. | :06:36.
unexplained. Her father, Bob Geldof, issued a statement. In it, he said, | :06:37. | :06:42.
she was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and most bonkers | :06:43. | :06:51.
of all of us. Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. | :06:52. | :06:55.
How is it possible we will not see her again? Born in 1989, Peaches | :06:56. | :07:01.
Geldof was the second daughter of Bob Geldof and Paula Yates. She said | :07:02. | :07:05.
her early childhood was idyllic. But then came her parents' divorce and | :07:06. | :07:11.
her mother's death from a heroin overdose when she was just 11. In | :07:12. | :07:15.
later life, she forged a media career, married twice. She had two | :07:16. | :07:20.
sons. The teenage wild child, becoming a champion of motherhood. | :07:21. | :07:25.
Her husband, Tom, said, my beloved white Peaches was adored by myself | :07:26. | :07:27.
and her two sons. -- wife. Her last message, a photo on social | :07:28. | :07:41.
media. The caption said, me and my mum. | :07:42. | :07:50.
We are just going to go straight back to the trial of Oscar | :07:51. | :07:59.
Pistorius. The court has resumed in Pretoria. | :08:00. | :08:18.
For court purposes, we have the exact length and so on. It is | :08:19. | :08:28.
measured. It will be relevant for the second part of the evidence as | :08:29. | :08:30.
well. Also for the second part, we will | :08:31. | :08:52.
ask if he can remain in the present clothing. That is for the | :08:53. | :08:56.
demonstrations. We stopped at the point where you | :08:57. | :09:08.
said you fell asleep. Can you take it from there? What time was it more | :09:09. | :09:12.
or less when he fell asleep? It was about just after 9pm. Around | :09:13. | :09:34.
10pm. Can I ask you to raise your voice a bit? It was between 9pm and | :09:35. | :09:46.
10pm. Can you go from there? Did you wake up again later on? I woke up in | :09:47. | :10:00.
the early hours of 14th of February. It was extremely warm in my room. I | :10:01. | :10:04.
sat up in bed. I noticed that the fans were still | :10:05. | :10:18.
running and that the door was still open. Although the lights had been | :10:19. | :10:34.
switched off. Reeva was still awake. She was not sleeping. She rolled | :10:35. | :10:39.
over to me and said, can't you sleep? I said, no, I can't. I've got | :10:40. | :10:46.
out of my side of the bed. I walked around the bed. I was holding onto | :10:47. | :10:53.
the foot of the bed with my left hand. I've got to wear the fans | :10:54. | :11:03.
were. I took the small fan, the floor fan. I'd put it inside the | :11:04. | :11:08.
room the fans were still running. The | :11:09. | :11:27.
fans were still running at the time. I then proceeded to close the | :11:28. | :11:32.
sliding doors and locks them. I then drew the curtains. And the blinds? I | :11:33. | :11:46.
do not remember. I just grabbed and closed. I'd probably close them both | :11:47. | :11:48.
but I remember closing the curtains. I came into the room at this point. | :11:49. | :12:22.
The only bit of light that was in the room was a little light on the | :12:23. | :12:29.
amplifier weathered TV cabinet was. There was a blue light. -- where the | :12:30. | :12:41.
television cabinet was. There was a pair of blue jeans on the floor. I | :12:42. | :12:50.
picked them up. I was going to place them over the amplifier, over the | :12:51. | :12:52.
light. It was at this point I heard a | :12:53. | :13:21.
window open in the bathroom. It sounded like the Windows sliding | :13:22. | :13:27.
open. I could hear the window hit the frame, as if it had slipped to a | :13:28. | :13:32.
point where it could not slide any more. It is a wooden frame window? | :13:33. | :13:43.
They are all wooden frames. That is the window referred to in the | :13:44. | :13:47.
evidence of the photographer. That is correct. | :13:48. | :14:14.
What did you think at the time, Mr Pistorius? That is the moment when | :14:15. | :14:26.
everything changed will stop I thought there was a burglar who was | :14:27. | :14:36.
gaining entry into my home. I was on the side of the room where you first | :14:37. | :14:41.
have to cross the passage that leads to the bathroom. I think, initially, | :14:42. | :14:51.
I just froze. I heard this noise and interpreted it as being someone | :14:52. | :14:58.
climbing into the bathroom. There is a passageway but there is no door. | :14:59. | :15:05.
There is a toilet door but there is no barrier between me and the | :15:06. | :15:15.
bathroom. It is one room. I thought that if somebody were at the window, | :15:16. | :15:22.
the entrance to the passage, three or four metres, they could be there | :15:23. | :15:28.
any moment. The first thing that ran through my mind was I needed to arm | :15:29. | :15:35.
myself. I needed to protect Reeva and I. I needed to get my gun. | :15:36. | :16:00.
I was looking down the passage, scared that the person was going to | :16:01. | :16:09.
come out. I rushed as quick as I could. I could not see anyone in the | :16:10. | :16:16.
room. I ran my hand up in front of me, at times touching the floor. I | :16:17. | :16:25.
went along side my bed. I grabbed my firearm from underneath the bed. It | :16:26. | :16:30.
had a canvas holster on it. I took it off the holster. At that point, I | :16:31. | :16:44.
wanted to put myself to get back to where the passage was an put myself | :16:45. | :16:49.
between the person that had gained access to my house and Reeva. Before | :16:50. | :16:55.
the passage wall, I can remember slowing down. I was scared that this | :16:56. | :17:04.
person, during the time I had left the amp, they could possibly have | :17:05. | :17:13.
been in the closet passage. I slowed down and I had my firearm extended | :17:14. | :17:18.
in front of me. Just as I left my bed, I whispered Ford Reeva to get | :17:19. | :17:24.
down and phoned the police. Where I entered the passage where | :17:25. | :17:59.
the closet is to the bathroom, it was at that point that I was just | :18:00. | :18:02.
overcome with fear and I started screaming and shouting for deep | :18:03. | :18:06.
burglar or the intruders to get out of my house. I shouted for Reeva to | :18:07. | :18:13.
get on the floor and phoned the police. I screamed at the people to | :18:14. | :18:18.
get out. I slowly made my way down the | :18:19. | :18:37.
passage. I was constantly aware of the threat that these people or | :18:38. | :18:40.
persons could come at me at any time. I did not have my legs on. | :18:41. | :18:51.
Just before I got to the wall, where the tiles starts in the bathroom, I | :18:52. | :19:09.
was worried to shout. I was worried they would know where I was and I | :19:10. | :19:11.
could get shot. Just before I got to the passage of | :19:12. | :19:28.
the bathroom, I heard a door slam. That could only have been the toilet | :19:29. | :19:34.
door. I could not see into the bathroom at this point but I could | :19:35. | :19:36.
hear the door slam. If I may stop you... I want to speak | :19:37. | :19:52.
about the passage. | :19:53. | :19:55. |
