Hello. I'm Sally Bundock with BBC World News. Our top stories:

:00:00.:00:10.

The UN confirms that Islamist insurgents in Iraq have carried out

:00:11.:00:13.

summary executions of civilians and Iraqi soldiers.

:00:14.:00:21.

The football World Cup gets underway in Brazil,

:00:22.:00:24.

as the home side gets off to a winning start in the opening match.

:00:25.:00:29.

Thailand's military ruler announces ambitious plans to boost

:00:30.:00:32.

And the self-styled hubcap artist - we take a look at sculptures made

:00:33.:00:37.

Within the last hour, disturbing details have been emerging

:00:38.:01:02.

of the human impact of the rapid Islamist militant advance in Iraq.

:01:03.:01:07.

The United Nations human rights commission says the number

:01:08.:01:09.

of summary executions after ISIS overran the city

:01:10.:01:14.

The militants have taken the cities of Mosul

:01:15.:01:19.

And the latest reports suggest they seized two more towns overnight

:01:20.:01:24.

The insurgents have threatened to march on to the capital, Baghdad

:01:25.:01:33.

and regions further south dominated by Iraq's Shia Muslim majority,

:01:34.:01:40.

Now, UN human rights spokesman Robert Colville says he's received

:01:41.:01:47.

reports of the execution of 17 civilians working

:01:48.:01:49.

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva and told me what she's been hearing

:01:50.:01:56.

Well, what the UN human rights office has just told us in Geneva is

:01:57.:02:12.

that they have verified reports, you know there is the United Nations

:02:13.:02:17.

Assistance Programme In Iraq, so they have people there, various

:02:18.:02:21.

reports that civilians have been executed, apparently by Islamist

:02:22.:02:26.

militants. Just two days ago in Mosul, the Islamist 's overran the

:02:27.:02:36.

town. 17 civilians, in one street. That is a verified report. They were

:02:37.:02:39.

apparently working with the Iraqi police. In another incident, 12

:02:40.:02:45.

members of the security forces also, it seems, executed by Islamist

:02:46.:02:49.

militants. The many checkpoints that have been set up in and around

:02:50.:02:54.

Mosul, by the Islamic militant group there, they seem to be being used to

:02:55.:03:04.

identify, detain anyone connected with the Iraqi government. It

:03:05.:03:08.

interesting that you say that, because our correspondence in Erbil

:03:09.:03:13.

say that some people are returning to Mosul because they feel it is

:03:14.:03:18.

safer than it was. I noticed they were saying that government forces

:03:19.:03:21.

have also committed excesses as well? That's right, during the

:03:22.:03:25.

battle for Mosul, which appears to be over for the time being, the UN

:03:26.:03:32.

believes that Iraqi forces were indiscriminately shelling areas

:03:33.:03:36.

where civilians were living and that many people died as a result of

:03:37.:03:41.

that. That in total, hundreds of people have been killed in the last

:03:42.:03:45.

few days in this fighting. It's true, there are some reports that

:03:46.:03:52.

some people, not that many, are returning to Mosul because

:03:53.:03:55.

apparently the electricity and water is back on. If you have nowhere to

:03:56.:04:00.

go, no water, as we head in that report, you can't afford to buy a

:04:01.:04:04.

bottle of water, perhaps he will return home. But I would not

:04:05.:04:09.

underestimate the death of concern of the UN human rights monitors

:04:10.:04:12.

about the events that have been taking place in Mosul. Imogen

:04:13.:04:18.

Foulkes in Geneva. With the last few moments, reports from Iraq say the

:04:19.:04:23.

most senior Shi'ite cleric has urged people to take up arms and defend

:04:24.:04:32.

their country. So, this situation is escalating now, moment by moment. We

:04:33.:04:39.

are hearing different elements from different sides of this? Indeed, the

:04:40.:04:44.

situation is escalating and expected to escalate. I was always saying,

:04:45.:04:48.

over the past couple of days, the incident, although it is a huge and

:04:49.:04:52.

significant incident, what is much more significant, in my opinion, is

:04:53.:04:55.

how this will grow, the implication of it. On the inside of Iraq we have

:04:56.:05:01.

seen mobilisation. This cleric is calling for mobilisation. On the

:05:02.:05:09.

other side, the Sunni tribes and militants have aligned with ISIS,

:05:10.:05:12.

which has created a sort of mess. Kurdish militants are advancing to

:05:13.:05:17.

secure places where Iraqi forces left behind. There could be

:05:18.:05:27.

publications in Syria, Turkey and neighbouring countries as well.

:05:28.:05:31.

Everybody is watching Baghdad now. It would seem that the insurgents

:05:32.:05:35.

are heading in that direction. Yet, the Iraqi government have been

:05:36.:05:38.

speaking to the press and saying, we have a plan to defend the capital.

:05:39.:05:44.

What are you hearing about Baghdad? Indeed, there is anxiety amongst

:05:45.:05:47.

people in Baghdad. They are expecting clashes. It is because

:05:48.:05:51.

Baghdad will become an open clash between both parties if it happens.

:05:52.:05:58.

I doubt if ISIS will launch a major attack on Baghdad. Talking about

:05:59.:06:07.

their strategic games, in terms of conventional attacks, it would

:06:08.:06:11.

benefit them more than a conventional attack. The major

:06:12.:06:22.

gain, they are up to, and I'm talking about ISIS, it is to shake

:06:23.:06:27.

the confidence of people in government. They will threaten to

:06:28.:06:31.

attack Baghdad, but I doubt they will put themselves in the middle of

:06:32.:06:35.

Baghdad, under the fire of the Army. The events this week have

:06:36.:06:39.

highlighted that the government has major weaknesses in areas. What do

:06:40.:06:44.

you think the future will hold? Are we looking at a split Iraq? This is

:06:45.:06:47.

a very important question. We have not seen any calls for separatism,

:06:48.:06:55.

if you like, even ISIS. They are saying to the Sunnis, this is our

:06:56.:07:00.

country, we should take over it as United. Nobody is putting it on the

:07:01.:07:08.

table, the enclaves, so far. The open clashes are however expected in

:07:09.:07:15.

Iraq. Thanks for coming from our BBC Arabic service, with your specialist

:07:16.:07:22.

experience. Let's move onto one of the other big events of the 24

:07:23.:07:23.

hours. Brazilians have been celebrating

:07:24.:07:25.

after making a winning start Several hundred million people

:07:26.:07:27.

around the world are thought to have Croatia took the early lead,

:07:28.:07:31.

when a cross was turned in by Brazil's star player Neymar

:07:32.:07:36.

responded, with a low, sweeping effort from twenty-five metres that

:07:37.:07:42.

just evaded the goalkeeper. A controversial goal turned

:07:43.:07:44.

the game, when Brazil were awarded a penalty

:07:45.:07:49.

after Fred tumbled in the box. Neymar just beat

:07:50.:07:54.

the keeper to give Brazil the lead. And, in stoppage time,

:07:55.:07:58.

it was Oscar who finished And despite earlier unrest,

:07:59.:08:00.

by kick-off time the streets were largely deserted,

:08:01.:08:06.

as most Brazilians stopped to watch These children in the Mangueira

:08:07.:08:09.

slum, in Rio de Janeiro, were dressed in the national colours

:08:10.:08:19.

as they followed the game Each day of the World Cup,

:08:20.:08:22.

we'll present a striking image from the tournament, here on BBC World

:08:23.:08:29.

News and also online at bbc.com. And how's this for dedication to

:08:30.:08:37.

your favourite football team? A Dutch fan has driven

:08:38.:08:41.

his 50 year-old pick-up truck from San Francisco

:08:42.:08:46.

in the US to north-eastern Brazil. But there's just one problem -

:08:47.:08:48.

he doesn't have a ticket. BBC Brasil's Julio Gomes

:08:49.:08:59.

has been speaking to him. My name is Ben, coming all the way

:09:00.:09:14.

from San Francisco. I travelled over 20,000 kilometres with old nearly.

:09:15.:09:17.

Here I am, in Bahia, Brazil. Beautiful. I made it out here for

:09:18.:09:22.

one reason, one reason only. Hopefully, the Dutch, one day, will

:09:23.:09:37.

win the World Cup. Right, let me see if she wants to start today. Like

:09:38.:09:44.

clockwork. 1955. 1955. 60 years old. When I left San Francisco, I said

:09:45.:10:01.

goodbye to my friends and family. I drove south towards the Mexican

:10:02.:10:06.

border. A lot of people say, like... A lot of people say,

:10:07.:10:17.

Benard, you're crazy. You won't even make Mexico with nearly. I said, OK,

:10:18.:10:30.

we'll see. I'm going to go and see Holland play Spain. It's almost like

:10:31.:10:33.

sweet revenge for the World Cup in South Africa. I don't feel sad that

:10:34.:10:37.

I don't have tickets. I made it, I'm in Bahia a mine where I wanted to

:10:38.:10:43.

be. I agree, you have to be a little crazy. Otherwise you would not do

:10:44.:10:44.

stuff like this. Lets hope he gets a ticket! Let's

:10:45.:11:13.

remind you that a repeat of the last World Cup final, between Spain and

:11:14.:11:18.

the Netherlands, that gets the second day of the World Cup under

:11:19.:11:26.

way. That kick-off is at 1900 GMT. We are in GMT, for the international

:11:27.:11:27.

audience. Now, the military ruler of Thailand,

:11:28.:11:44.

Prayuth Chan-ocha, has announced ambitious plans to boost the

:11:45.:11:45.

economy. The general, who seized power

:11:46.:11:48.

in a coup last month, says he'll cut the cost of living

:11:49.:11:50.

and re-think farming subsidies. He's also promised to appoint

:11:51.:11:53.

an interim government within the next three months.

:11:54.:11:55.

Jonathan Head is in Bangkok. He says the biggest priority

:11:56.:11:57.

of the military is to reform The political system and, to some

:11:58.:12:09.

degree, the judicial system is broken. This is a very ambitious

:12:10.:12:14.

agenda, for what is normally a very temporary form of ruling military

:12:15.:12:18.

council. That is what makes this a coup very different from the last

:12:19.:12:22.

one, eight years ago, or even coups before that. They always appointed

:12:23.:12:26.

interim government is very quickly. They have quick timetables for a

:12:27.:12:29.

return to democracy. Generally, they had an ambitious agendas. This feels

:12:30.:12:35.

very different. The military said, we got it wrong last time, the

:12:36.:12:39.

problems are deep and we are going to fix them. Although he's given a

:12:40.:12:43.

date for the interim government, it is going to be three four months

:12:44.:12:47.

after the coup before we have a Prime Minister in the cabinet. Even

:12:48.:12:51.

at this early stage, the general and his military council are talking

:12:52.:12:54.

about ramping up infrastructure spending even beyond that of the

:12:55.:12:59.

Yingluck Shinawatra government. We are talking massive amounts of

:13:00.:13:06.

money. He's talking about reforming education to make it more

:13:07.:13:08.

nationalistic. It's talking about price controls, revamping subsidies

:13:09.:13:14.

for farmers. These are enormous agendas. He does have a problem with

:13:15.:13:17.

the economy. It has slumped because of political turmoil. Some feel-good

:13:18.:13:21.

measures were inevitable. But this seems to be going far beyond what

:13:22.:13:28.

you would expect, normally a temporary military administration,

:13:29.:13:31.

has an agenda. What is the reaction to this key? People feeling like

:13:32.:13:48.

there be serious reform, or are they balking at a military ruler? Well, a

:13:49.:13:52.

lot of people didn't like the previous regime. They held a coup,

:13:53.:13:55.

even if you don't like one, was one way of rating the turmoil and fix

:13:56.:13:59.

some of the problems like corruption.

The latest headlines: The UN says it has evidence

of civilians and Iraqi soldiers in the city of Mosul.

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has given

:17:21.:17:23.

an exclusive interview to the BBC's Newsnight programme.

:17:24.:17:27.

As ever, she remained guarded about whether she would run

:17:28.:17:29.

But high on the agenda was the current escalating violence in Iraq.

:17:30.:17:34.

Clinton has called on the country's prime minister to do more to create

:17:35.:17:38.

She is back in the limelight, Hillary Clinton is revelling in the

:17:39.:17:54.

limelight as she launches her new book and tests the waters for a

:17:55.:18:00.

potential presidential run. Today in New York she gave the BBC and

:18:01.:18:03.

exclusive interview, starting with Iraq. Barack Obama said he is ready

:18:04.:18:11.

to take action to help, but echoing the American president, Hillary

:18:12.:18:15.

Clinton said Iraq had to up their game as well. That is not a role for

:18:16.:18:20.

the United States. There needs to be a number of steps the Iraqi

:18:21.:18:27.

government must take to show commitment to an inclusive Iraq. If

:18:28.:18:37.

Britain followed the US into the Iraq war, the crisis involving Syria

:18:38.:18:44.

unfolded differently last year when President Obama was considering

:18:45.:18:49.

launching military strikes against President Assad's government. If

:18:50.:18:56.

nothing is done he will conclude he can use these weapons again and

:18:57.:19:08.

again. After heated debate in the House of Commons in August, the

:19:09.:19:12.

Prime Minister lost the vote on military action and it had

:19:13.:19:13.

repercussions across the Atlantic. Individual votes were defeated but

:19:14.:19:14.

if you add up the individual votes for everything that would have been

:19:15.:19:16.

a positive, you could have gotten to that. I don't understand the

:19:17.:19:17.

intricacies of British politics, it was a defeat for the idea there

:19:18.:19:22.

should be intervention. Hillary Clinton told the BBC the special

:19:23.:19:24.

relationship with the UK mattered a great deal. She even commented on

:19:25.:19:33.

the Scottish referendum. There have been legal processes associated with

:19:34.:19:37.

it and we will see what the people of Scotland decide. I think it would

:19:38.:19:41.

be a loss for both sides, but I don't have a vote. We asked her what

:19:42.:19:48.

everybody wants to know. We'll sheet, or won't she? I am about to

:19:49.:19:52.

be a grandmother and I am excited about that. I want to relish the

:19:53.:19:57.

experience. I don't want to be passing through it and looking

:19:58.:20:01.

forward. I want to be in the middle of it. A presidential campaign is

:20:02.:20:07.

all consuming and I am not ready for that. But it is not the questions,

:20:08.:20:13.

will you run, can you win? But what is your vision for America and can

:20:14.:20:19.

you lead it there? If she does run and win, she will be making history

:20:20.:20:24.

in the US as the first woman president and as the first

:20:25.:20:27.

residential couple returning to the White House with their roles

:20:28.:20:28.

reversed. Voters in Afghanistan will head back

:20:29.:20:31.

to the polls on Saturday, for the final round

:20:32.:20:34.

of the Presidential Elections. It's a straight contest between the

:20:35.:20:36.

country's former foreign minister But what do Afghanistan's women

:20:37.:20:39.

want from the next leader? BBC Persian's Tahir Qadiry talked to

:20:40.:20:44.

one of the country's most famous pop stars, Ariana Saeed, who lives in

:20:45.:20:49.

London but regularly travels home. TRANSLATION: I was born in

:20:50.:21:21.

Afghanistan in the beautiful city of Kabul. Since I was eight years old I

:21:22.:21:26.

have been living abroad. I started my artistic career five years ago

:21:27.:21:32.

and I have played about 70 to 80 concerts around the world. Two years

:21:33.:21:42.

ago, I worked for Afghanistan's channel one and had Mike Jones

:21:43.:21:48.

show, it was called Night Of Music. I presented it. -- my own television

:21:49.:21:56.

show. Things like music and art have

:21:57.:22:09.

progressed in Afghanistan since the Taliban's rule was ended. People

:22:10.:22:16.

have accepted women as artists. Ten years ago, women would not even have

:22:17.:22:30.

appeared on stage. It is priceless that after so many years, the people

:22:31.:22:34.

of Afghanistan now have a voice in the future of their country. They

:22:35.:22:47.

can vote to choose their own leader. I have three requests for the future

:22:48.:22:53.

president of Afghanistan. My first request is about women's rights.

:22:54.:22:57.

Rights should be given to women. My second request is to help Afghan's

:22:58.:23:02.

street children. They don't have anyone to take care of them. My

:23:03.:23:08.

third request is to get rid of sectarianism. This is what I hope

:23:09.:23:14.

the next president will do. The power of art.

:23:15.:23:25.

Ptolemy Elrington sees animals in everyday objects -

:23:26.:23:29.

usually unwanted objects that have been discarded and left as rubbish.

:23:30.:23:31.

The self-styled hubcap artist first became fascinated with scrap when he

:23:32.:23:34.

found an abundance of plastic car waste near his home in Bradford.

:23:35.:23:48.

If it apiece I really like, I make it expensive because I don't want to

:23:49.:23:59.

sell it. Great for the kids, I won't let them drive past a hope Tom and

:24:00.:24:05.

they have to pick it up. It seems pointless throwing it out when it

:24:06.:24:06.

all has value. I used to live in Bradford. There is

:24:07.:24:23.

a bend on the road where I used to live. The cars and when I was

:24:24.:24:32.

walking by I would see them regularly. I started thinking about

:24:33.:24:39.

the waste, the time and effort that has gone into designing these things

:24:40.:24:42.

and in the sunlight they looked really beautiful. I started to

:24:43.:24:52.

collect them with an idea of making something out of them. The idea was

:24:53.:25:03.

to make a suit of armour. I never got round to it, the fish got in the

:25:04.:25:10.

way. I see a lot of detail within the hubcaps. Reminds me of other

:25:11.:25:16.

things. It is all hand tools, hacksaw and craft knife. Benz, score

:25:17.:25:24.

and cut. Drill holes. I use galvanised wire which I get from

:25:25.:25:30.

skips and it does not rust. I make stable shapes and fit the bits

:25:31.:25:37.

together. When I left Bradford I went to India for a year and saw the

:25:38.:25:41.

amount of poverty. But everybody used and reused things. If something

:25:42.:25:45.

was amount of poverty. But everybody

:25:46.:25:46.

used and reused things. If broke and they did not throw it away and get a
