Hello. I'm Dani Sinha with BBC World News. | :00:00. | :00:07.
US officials try to verify the video posted by Islamic State | :00:08. | :00:13.
militants, showing the beheading of American journalist James Foley. | :00:14. | :00:19.
In Gaza, the wife and child of a Hamas militant leader are reportedly | :00:20. | :00:22.
killed by Israeli air strikes launched in response to rocket fire. | :00:23. | :00:32.
Police say they've arrested 47 people during a night of protests in | :00:33. | :00:39.
the Missouri town rocked by violence over the police shooting of an | :00:40. | :00:44.
And in Japan at least 27 people are killed | :00:45. | :00:46.
after the equivalent of one months rain falls in 24 hours, triggering | :00:47. | :00:49.
Islamic State militants have posted a graphic video online showing | :00:50. | :01:07.
the beheading of American journalist James Foley, | :01:08. | :01:10.
who's been missing since he was seized in Syria in November 2012. | :01:11. | :01:13.
The militants say it's retribution for recent US airstrikes in Iraq. | :01:14. | :01:16.
US officials say they are trying to establish the authenticity | :01:17. | :01:20.
He was a journalist drawn to war reporting. | :01:21. | :01:32.
Previously in Libya, he was captured and held | :01:33. | :01:34.
Then I was hit several times with the butt of an AK-47, | :01:35. | :01:42.
punched, and dragged into a vehicle with my hands tied behind my back. | :01:43. | :01:49.
On a Facebook site campaigning for | :01:50. | :01:52.
his freedom, James Foley's mother seemed to accept her son was dead. | :01:53. | :01:56.
She urged his kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages. | :01:57. | :02:02.
The militants say they are taking revenge for recent American air | :02:03. | :02:05.
It is one of the few ways that they can hit back. | :02:06. | :02:12.
In a video too graphic to be shown, a man with a British accent is seen | :02:13. | :02:17.
executing James Foley, who went missing in Syria two years ago. | :02:18. | :02:20.
The executioner goes on to threaten that unless | :02:21. | :02:23.
President Obama stops attacking the Islamic State, the life of another | :02:24. | :02:28.
The US first authorised airstrikes against the jihadi fighters earlier | :02:29. | :02:36.
this month, to protect refugees and stop the advance on Kurdish areas. | :02:37. | :02:40.
Since then they have been instrumental | :02:41. | :02:42.
in pushing back the frontiers of the Islamic State, allowing | :02:43. | :02:45.
Peshmerga fighters to recapture the vitally important Mosul Dam. | :02:46. | :02:51.
It has been known for some time that up to 500 British | :02:52. | :02:54.
They have appeared in propaganda videos, | :02:55. | :02:59.
The identity of James Foley's executioner is unknown, | :03:00. | :03:05.
but he appears to kill without a conscience, and says he is more | :03:06. | :03:08.
Matthew van Dyke is a film-maker and journalist from Philadelphia | :03:09. | :03:18.
who knew James Foley. He paid tribute to his friend. | :03:19. | :03:29.
James was a true professional, you know, he was really dedicated to | :03:30. | :03:35.
journalism. He believed in what he was doing, he wasn't going to let | :03:36. | :03:40.
anything stop him. He was captured in Libya and right after he was | :03:41. | :03:44.
released he went back to report on that conflict. Then he went on to | :03:45. | :03:48.
Syria. He knew the risks and the dangers but he knew he believed in | :03:49. | :03:56.
what he did. I saw him a couple of weeks before he went missing, I was | :03:57. | :04:01.
working on a film and he was working as a journalist in Aleppo. I shot | :04:02. | :04:07.
some photos and videos of him, and a couple of weeks later, you just | :04:08. | :04:11.
vanished. There hasn't been much information about what happened. My | :04:12. | :04:16.
Syrians is as were telling me he had been kidnapped and now it appears | :04:17. | :04:23.
that information was correct, because when ISIS was formed, some | :04:24. | :04:30.
people joined them, so they probably took him with them when that | :04:31. | :04:31.
happened. Earlier, the BBC's Jiyar Gol gave me | :04:32. | :04:37.
this update on the killing of James This is the first Westerner beheaded | :04:38. | :04:50.
by this group but it shows why many in the area are afraid of them. Many | :04:51. | :04:57.
people in tribes who have opposed them have been killed in a brutal | :04:58. | :05:03.
fashion. That is why many are afraid of them and obviously this is the | :05:04. | :05:07.
first time they are killing a Westerner. It is apparently a | :05:08. | :05:14.
reaction to American air strikes. Yesterday, one of the most important | :05:15. | :05:26.
areas fell and it would've impossible without the American air | :05:27. | :05:33.
strikes. The video clearly warns America that if they can do need to | :05:34. | :05:40.
help, they may execute more people. They paraded another American | :05:41. | :05:43.
journalist in front of the camera and said his destiny and life would | :05:44. | :05:48.
be dependent on Mr Obama's next move. | :05:49. | :06:03.
The militants from the so-called IS group, who reportedly beheaded | :06:04. | :06:05.
Mr Foley, are seeking to build what they call a 'caliphate' state. | :06:06. | :06:08.
The BBC's Michael Hirst has produced this guide. | :06:09. | :07:34.
Speaking to the BBC, the UK's Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond | :07:35. | :07:36.
says the footage posted online appears to be genuine and it's a | :07:37. | :07:39.
matter of serious concern that the killer spoke with a British accent. | :07:40. | :07:45.
We are absolutely aware that there are significant numbers | :07:46. | :07:47.
of British nationals involved in terrible crimes, probably in the | :07:48. | :07:49.
commission of atrocities, making jihad with IS and other extremist | :07:50. | :07:54.
organisations. This is something we've been tracking and dealing with | :07:55. | :08:04.
for many months, and I don't think this video changes anything, it just | :08:05. | :08:10.
heightens awareness of a situation which is very grave and which we've | :08:11. | :08:14.
David Cameron has cut short his holiday to host an emergency meeting | :08:15. | :08:38.
to discuss the latest situation in Iraq and Syria following that | :08:39. | :08:49.
killing. Earlier I spoke to a guest in our studio in Leeds and I asked | :08:50. | :08:54.
why we keep on seeing British men going out to countries such as Iraq | :08:55. | :08:57.
and Syria and becoming Islamic jihadists. If there are British | :08:58. | :09:03.
people involved, that is against the tradition of Islam. The Islamic | :09:04. | :09:08.
State has an ethos requiring compassion, justice and mercy. What | :09:09. | :09:14.
has happened here is completely against that. Secondly, in terms of | :09:15. | :09:18.
what has gone wrong in terms of finding British nationals going out | :09:19. | :09:23.
there, the message is clear from the mosques that whatever is happening | :09:24. | :09:27.
in those conflict areas is not Jihad. It is a complete | :09:28. | :09:32.
misunderstanding if someone is going from Britain to take part in Iraq | :09:33. | :09:37.
and Syria and places where there is conflict thinking they are | :09:38. | :09:44.
contributing to the jihad ethos. That is not the case. We need to | :09:45. | :09:48.
work together with the intelligence services, the police and the | :09:49. | :09:51.
government to work out why it is that young people who perhaps are | :09:52. | :10:01.
manipulated by those who are against the government to organise such | :10:02. | :10:04.
activities where they take young, impressionable Muslims to take | :10:05. | :10:05.
part. Later today, we'll have a special | :10:06. | :10:12.
programme on Iraq and the Caliphate. As well as the latest | :10:13. | :10:15.
from our team on the ground, we'll be looking at what the | :10:16. | :10:17.
Caliphate is and who supports it. And what the consequences | :10:18. | :10:20.
of the fight for it are That's from 3.00pm GMT on | :10:21. | :10:23.
BBC World News. In Japan, | :10:24. | :10:31.
at least 27 people have been killed after a series of landslides struck | :10:32. | :10:33.
the city of Hiroshima. Dozens of houses were buried | :10:34. | :10:35.
when hillsides collapsed A short | :10:36. | :10:37.
while ago I spoke to the BBC's He told me we don't yet know | :10:38. | :10:40.
the full extent of the devastation I think we are still expecting the | :10:41. | :10:58.
death toll to rise a bit further. Rescue services and soldiers are on | :10:59. | :11:01.
the scene going through the smashed houses one by one, but obviously | :11:02. | :11:06.
there is a lot of mud and rock. There were least ten of these | :11:07. | :11:11.
mudslides that came down out of the mountains on the northern edge of | :11:12. | :11:15.
Hiroshima early this morning because of this absolutely enormous rainfall | :11:16. | :11:19.
they got over night. Some of the houses, roads, cars are buried under | :11:20. | :11:24.
very thick mud, so it will take them while to go through all the debris | :11:25. | :11:31.
and perhaps discover people still trapped in houses. | :11:32. | :11:38.
Why did this whether, as a surprise to most residents? | :11:39. | :11:45.
Well, in most part because the government did not issue any | :11:46. | :11:52.
warning. Japan is a country that is well prepared for disasters, there | :11:53. | :11:56.
is a good system in place, but the local government said it simply was | :11:57. | :12:01.
not expecting this. Looking at the radar pictures of the rainfall, it | :12:02. | :12:06.
was relatively light rainfall elsewhere, and then suddenly you see | :12:07. | :12:11.
this very intense red where the rain right over Hiroshima fell during the | :12:12. | :12:16.
night. And it is really just this big blot right over the top of | :12:17. | :12:20.
Hiroshima. Elsewhere, very little rain at all. So it is a very unusual | :12:21. | :12:27.
weather pattern, although I have to say we started to see it more and | :12:28. | :12:31.
more in Japan. Something similar happened last year in which 32 | :12:32. | :12:34.
people were killed much closer to Tokyo. | :12:35. | :12:37.
Police in Ferguson, Missouri have arrested 47 people | :12:38. | :12:39.
The town has been rocked by violence over the police shooting | :12:40. | :12:43.
of an unarmed black teenager almost two weeks ago. | :12:44. | :12:45.
Tuesday night saw largely peaceful protests following | :12:46. | :12:46.
Earlier I spoke to our North America correspondent, Rajini Vaidyanathan, | :12:47. | :12:50.
who's been at the protests in Ferguson. | :12:51. | :12:51.
She told me the latest demonstrations have been | :12:52. | :12:53.
Well, the protests are now over but I was down there earlier and mostly | :12:54. | :13:12.
they were very peaceful protests, lines of demonstrators walking along | :13:13. | :13:19.
the street chanting and saying they wanted justice for Michael Brown. Of | :13:20. | :13:22.
course, the unarmed black teenager who was shot by a white police | :13:23. | :13:28.
officer more than a week ago, and whose death has sparked a huge | :13:29. | :13:34.
outrage here. As the evening progressed, most of the protesters | :13:35. | :13:38.
went home, but police helicopters then called on the remaining crowds | :13:39. | :13:44.
to disperse. Things got a bit tense than an police basically forced the | :13:45. | :13:48.
protesters to move on. It is unclear exactly what happened because we | :13:49. | :13:53.
weren't there to see that directly. But I was down there and my team | :13:54. | :13:58.
were told that we had to leave, the media were moved from the scene and | :13:59. | :14:03.
brought here to what is known as the media staging area. So, in the main, | :14:04. | :14:08.
a calm protest which ended with some tension. To my knowledge there were | :14:09. | :14:14.
no rockets thrown or tear gas, none of the violins we've seen in recent | :14:15. | :14:19.
nights. We are expecting a grand jury could meet later today to | :14:20. | :14:23.
discuss whether or not to charge the police officer who shot Michael | :14:24. | :14:27.
Brown. In this particular system it is the grand jury that will listen | :14:28. | :14:31.
and decide whether charges should be pressed. | :14:32. | :14:38.
Still to come: We continue our look at cycling around the world. | :14:39. | :14:42.
Next up, we had to Brazil and Nairobi. | :14:43. | :14:51.
To Pakistan now, where the country's leaders are | :14:52. | :14:53.
meeting, as tens of thousands of protesters gather outside | :14:54. | :14:55.
Armed with wire cutters and cleans, the protesters broke down the | :14:56. | :15:19.
barricades, from the security forces watched on. The area houses state | :15:20. | :15:24.
buildings, foreign embassies and the city government. Leading tens of | :15:25. | :15:32.
thousands of protesters, the former cricket star, Imran can. They are | :15:33. | :15:42.
wanting the Prime Minister Nawaz cricket star, Imran can. They are | :15:43. | :15:54.
the protesters are trying to destabilise democracy. They say will | :15:55. | :16:06.
the Prime Minister Stepstone. The protest will be peaceful. But | :16:07. | :16:10.
the Prime Minister Stepstone. The whether we are hungry or thirsty, | :16:11. | :16:19.
the Prime Minister Stepstone. The will continue. We want all those | :16:20. | :16:27.
requirements to be fulfilled. We want the society to become | :16:28. | :16:33.
democratic in the true sense. We want the democracy to be visible, as | :16:34. | :16:38.
it is in Western countries. Pakistan has a history of violent uprisings | :16:39. | :16:46.
and it has given rise to fear of possible future direction. | :16:47. | :16:56.
The latest headlines. The mother of the American journalist apparently | :16:57. | :17:09.
be headed by Islamic militants said he gave his life trying to help the | :17:10. | :17:20.
people of Syria. In fighting has continued between them forces and | :17:21. | :17:27.
militants in Palestine. We will stay with that story. | :17:28. | :17:29.
Fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants is | :17:30. | :17:31.
continuing for a second day, after the collapse of peace talks | :17:32. | :17:34.
Hamas says an Israeli air strike on Gaza City has killed | :17:35. | :17:37.
the wife and two-year-old daughter of the commander of | :17:38. | :17:39.
It is not known if he survived the attack. | :17:40. | :17:43.
Yolande Knell has the latest from Gaza. | :17:44. | :17:44.
Naftali Bennett, the Israeli Minister for Economy, | :17:45. | :17:46.
is in Jerusalem and I asked him why the ceasefire had ended.. | :17:47. | :17:56.
They ended the cease-fire yesterday and really retaliated, which we will | :17:57. | :18:05.
continue to do full. These cease-fires are very peculiar. They | :18:06. | :18:08.
keep breaking them and keep filing honours. If they continue to do | :18:09. | :18:17.
that, we will continue to respond. Some will question the taming of the | :18:18. | :18:22.
ending of the cease-fire. You said they ended the cease-fire, but it | :18:23. | :18:29.
doesn't coincide with an air strike on a top, under the regime. We are | :18:30. | :18:39.
always looking to take out the commanders of these terror groups. | :18:40. | :18:47.
We are both fighting radical Islam. We are talking about radical Islamic | :18:48. | :18:57.
states which want to create one huge fight from Eric, through Tel Aviv | :18:58. | :19:02.
into London. When you identify terrorists, you have to take them | :19:03. | :19:07.
out. Let us talk about the people who are being killed, because | :19:08. | :19:11.
whatever way you look at this, there are eight and equal number of | :19:12. | :19:17.
casualties. 2000 Palestinians killed, mostly civilians, as opposed | :19:18. | :19:25.
to just over 60 Israelis killed, mostly military casualties. Let us | :19:26. | :19:33.
make no mistake, they are firing mostly military casualties. Let us | :19:34. | :19:37.
rockets and missiles into concentrated civilian areas in | :19:38. | :19:44.
Israel. How many Israelis need to die for us to gain your sympathy? | :19:45. | :19:51.
The Palestinians want you to lift the siege. Why can't assume you to | :19:52. | :19:56.
that that as it will bring about peace? We have no siege. In Gazza | :19:57. | :20:09.
every day, there is dozens of shiploads of food, medical supplies | :20:10. | :20:16.
and other strings. The trouble is other stuff that they try to bring | :20:17. | :20:21.
into Gazza, such as weapons and concrete, to build more tunnels to | :20:22. | :20:28.
Israelis, which is acceptable. The general rule is, anything | :20:29. | :20:32.
humanitarian law going, anything which can create weapons to kill | :20:33. | :20:36.
Israelis will not be allowed in. Will you go back to the peace talks | :20:37. | :20:43.
end April? I think the talks are over. Once the Palestinians started | :20:44. | :20:49.
shooting at us once again, we're not going to conduct talks under threat | :20:50. | :20:56.
of shooting. We are facing a very determined and radical Islamic group | :20:57. | :21:00.
and we need to beat them and we will. The New Zealand government has | :21:01. | :21:11.
said it is to ban the practice of removing the funds from dead sharks. | :21:12. | :21:22.
Around 120 tonnes is exported from the country every year. It has been | :21:23. | :21:26.
told cynical and wasteful by environmentalists. Wildlife groups | :21:27. | :21:36.
have welcomed the new state. A Chinese newspaper has demanded | :21:37. | :21:46.
retribution against Australia after a politician described the people of | :21:47. | :21:50.
China as mongrels who shoot each other. They said Australia has a | :21:51. | :21:59.
friendly -- unfriendly attitude towards China. | :22:00. | :22:04.
Cycling is generally seen to be good for our health, but with | :22:05. | :22:07.
the rapid growth of mega-cities across the globe, riding a bike in | :22:08. | :22:09.
All this week, we have been taking you around the world on two wheels. | :22:10. | :22:14.
Let us head to Rio and Nairobi, to see what it is like to be | :22:15. | :22:18.
My name is they are not. I am a cyclist. I cycle to work and to | :22:19. | :22:45.
practice every day. My name is Joshua. I work as a | :22:46. | :23:00.
career. I think Rio de Janiero was a | :23:01. | :23:26.
beautiful city to say Colin, because of the sightseeing | :23:27. | :23:34.
beautiful city to say Colin, because and the beaches. But casting not | :23:35. | :23:38.
respect the bakes. We are trying to change this. I have had a number of | :23:39. | :23:51.
bad injuries. I got a broken arm and one time, a taxi knocked me down. | :23:52. | :24:06.
The traffic is very heavy in Nairobi, which is why a Raider | :24:07. | :24:15.
bicycle. In Nairobi, we do not have cycling lanes. We think of the | :24:16. | :24:24.
Olympic Games. They are going to be 100 kilometres of cycle lanes for | :24:25. | :24:37.
that. My bait is my best friend. I use it for exercise, and for work. | :24:38. | :24:40.
It is a big part of my life. I use my bicycle | :24:41. | :25:08.
movement. Inspiring Olivers to get on our bakes. | :25:09. | :25:14.
of the capital Monrovia in quarantine, as it struggles to | :25:15. | :25:25.
The decision has also affected other airlines which use the city as a | :25:26. | :25:50.
stopping off point. Consider the effect of a single person being | :25:51. | :25:58.
diagnosed with the disease. It could have a devastating effect, at least | :25:59. | :26:08.
$1 billion. This could affect the wider economy of the country, | :26:09. | :26:12.
affecting trade between the country and its neighbours and abroad. The | :26:13. | :26:23.
airport is a vital place of employment for many people. I used | :26:24. | :26:35.
to make 10-12 trips a day when the airport was and fuel use, but no | :26:36. | :26:40.
since the outbreak of the disease, I am making only maybe two or three | :26:41. | :26:45.
trips a day and it is becoming more difficult for me to earn enough to | :26:46. | :26:58.
feed my family. They see the suspension should go beyond the | :26:59. | :26:59.
listed countries. | :27:00. | :27:04. |
