Hello, I'm Laura Trevelyan with BBC News,

:00:00.:00:07.

broadcasting in the UK and around the world.

:00:08.:00:09.

He was reaching for his wallet, and the officer shot him in the arm.

:00:10.:00:20.

The aftermath of a black man being shot by police in Minnesota

:00:21.:00:23.

is captured live on video by his girlfriend.

:00:24.:00:25.

The footage is sparking further protests.

:00:26.:00:26.

In the uncertain world of British politics,

:00:27.:00:28.

the next Prime Minister will be a woman.

:00:29.:00:32.

Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom are the last two standing.

:00:33.:00:34.

Women may also hold the keys to who wins the White House next,

:00:35.:00:38.

so what are voters looking for in a candidate?

:00:39.:00:40.

And could one restaurant be serving up pasta

:00:41.:00:45.

We go to meet some of the real-life ghost busters.

:00:46.:01:06.

The video following the shooting of a black man by police

:01:07.:01:10.

in Minnesota is sparking outrage and protests.

:01:11.:01:12.

It's the second such incident captured on camera in 48 hours.

:01:13.:01:15.

The victim, Philando Castile, had been pulled over and was reaching

:01:16.:01:19.

for his driver's license, according to his girlfriend, when he was shot.

:01:20.:01:23.

She then captured the aftermath and streamed it live.

:01:24.:01:26.

The BBC's Nick Bryant reports, and a warning -

:01:27.:01:28.

some of the images in this report are distressing.

:01:29.:01:33.

He's licensed, he's carrying but he's licensed to carry.

:01:34.:01:36.

He was trying to get out his ID and his wallet.

:01:37.:01:38.

The immediate aftermath of another police shooting,

:01:39.:01:41.

this time not just caught on camera but streamed live on Facebook.

:01:42.:01:49.

He was briefed he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet

:01:50.:01:52.

and the officer just shot him in his arm.

:01:53.:01:59.

The female passenger in the car, Diamond Reynolds has just

:02:00.:02:04.

seen her boyfriend shot by a policeman and he's fast losing

:02:05.:02:07.

I told him not to reach for anything.

:02:08.:02:10.

You told him to get his ID, Sir, his driver's licence.

:02:11.:02:14.

Philando Castile had been pulled over because his rear light wasn't

:02:15.:02:17.

working and apparently told the officer he had

:02:18.:02:20.

a legally-purchased concealed weapon with him in the car.

:02:21.:02:23.

Mr Castile had worked as a cafeteria supervisor

:02:24.:02:26.

Protesters converged on the governor's mansion,

:02:27.:02:34.

draping it with police tape, taken from the scene of the shooting

:02:35.:02:37.

and giving angry voice to now familiar cries.

:02:38.:02:51.

Then, Diamond Reynolds stepped before the crowd.

:02:52.:02:54.

The police put four, five shots into him for no reason.

:02:55.:02:57.

It's the latest in a long line of police shootings involving

:02:58.:03:01.

African-Americans and the second high-profile incident this week.

:03:02.:03:06.

This is footage from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, showing a black man,

:03:07.:03:11.

Alton Stirling, being held down by police and shot several times.

:03:12.:03:13.

So another police shooting, another black family left to mourn,

:03:14.:03:21.

and this is happening with alarming regularity.

:03:22.:03:25.

Already this year in America, 123 African-Americans

:03:26.:03:27.

The fear is that this could be the start of a long, hot summer,

:03:28.:03:32.

words which for decades have come with a sense of foreboding.

:03:33.:03:42.

The BBC's Barbara Plett Usher is also in Minneapolis,

:03:43.:03:44.

and she joins us now with the latest.

:03:45.:03:49.

What is the mood there in the wake of this killing? There is sadness.

:03:50.:03:59.

Earlier today, I was at the scene of the shooting and people are putting

:04:00.:04:03.

down flowers. People work too upset to speak with me. They said they

:04:04.:04:07.

were very upset, numb, upset. They were very emotional about it. There

:04:08.:04:11.

was also regret and distress. There were also elderly white people who

:04:12.:04:19.

took part in the equal rights movement in the 1960s. There is also

:04:20.:04:26.

a lot of anger especially from the speakers here. They are tired of

:04:27.:04:28.

seeing their brothers and sisters killed. Although it is a multiracial

:04:29.:04:33.

feel, you can get some pointed comments like, you white people,

:04:34.:04:38.

usual white privilege to help us. The president said he was deeply

:04:39.:04:45.

disturbed by this, but it should not drive a wedge between communities

:04:46.:04:50.

and their law enforcement. What people said you about law

:04:51.:04:53.

enforcement in the wake of this? There is a lot of anger. And long

:04:54.:05:01.

term our happiness. One man was a pastor, he was a war veteran. He

:05:02.:05:04.

says it feels like a war zone mentality. The people get pulled

:05:05.:05:08.

over by the police, they had to position themselves as prisoners of

:05:09.:05:12.

war and just survive. Some other strong statements from here as well.

:05:13.:05:17.

You get people saying, they are not all bad, it is the system that needs

:05:18.:05:21.

to be changed. One man said we needed it better training for the

:05:22.:05:28.

police. There is a feeling it is versus them, so there is a press for

:05:29.:05:31.

change in this situation. Who is going to investigate this death? The

:05:32.:05:38.

governor said there would be an investigation from a government

:05:39.:05:43.

bureau at the state level. He was also going to see if the Department

:05:44.:05:50.

of Justice could assess whether they could investigate. If it did that

:05:51.:05:57.

kind of investigation here, it would be recognising there could be a

:05:58.:06:01.

racial element to this shooting. It was also -- would also show how much

:06:02.:06:07.

prominence this kind of thing is getting now, where not only the

:06:08.:06:13.

governor says he is shocked by it but it gets to federal level quite

:06:14.:06:15.

quickly. Thank you. Now, let's face it -

:06:16.:06:18.

lately, British politics and stability haven't

:06:19.:06:20.

exactly gone hand-in-hand. a woman is on track to become

:06:21.:06:22.

the next Prime Minister. In their ballot to select

:06:23.:06:31.

a new party leader, Conservative MPs narrowed it down

:06:32.:06:33.

to Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom. The winner will be

:06:34.:06:36.

decided in September. Our political editor,

:06:37.:06:37.

Laura Kuenssberg, and there is flash

:06:38.:06:39.

photography in her report. The march of Theresa May, striding

:06:40.:06:42.

easily onto the ticket. Miles ahead of both

:06:43.:06:45.

her rivals today. Her supporters already crying,

:06:46.:06:48.

"Prime Minister". This vote shows that

:06:49.:06:53.

the Conservative Party can come together and that

:06:54.:06:59.

under my leadership, it will. We need proven leadership,

:07:00.:07:02.

to negotiate the best deal for leaving the European Union,

:07:03.:07:04.

to unite our party and our country, and to make Britain a country that

:07:05.:07:09.

works not for the privileged few In the grand rooms of Westminster,

:07:10.:07:12.

the vote was clear. Therefore Michael Gove,

:07:13.:07:18.

having the lowest number of votes, With Michael Gove out

:07:19.:07:27.

and the Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom trailing,

:07:28.:07:32.

Mrs May's supporters were delighted. Not quite waving on the steps

:07:33.:07:37.

of number ten yet, but she has just won the very clear endorsement

:07:38.:07:40.

of the majority of Tory MPs. Her backers hope her experience

:07:41.:07:44.

makes her the clear favourite. She can truly say as we go

:07:45.:07:49.

into the country that she is Are you surprised by how

:07:50.:07:52.

strong the result was? She got 165 earlier in the week,

:07:53.:07:56.

which was fantastic and overwhelming in itself, but to go

:07:57.:07:59.

forward even further, touching the 200, is a clear

:08:00.:08:02.

indication of what parliamentarians think we need in our next Prime

:08:03.:08:05.

Minister. But traditional Tories are excited

:08:06.:08:08.

by Andrea Leadsom, her rival. The Eurosceptic energy minister

:08:09.:08:15.

is far less experienced. Her colleagues need reassurance

:08:16.:08:18.

about her record, but one wing of the party isn't enthusiastic

:08:19.:08:22.

enough to march along the river in an unusual show

:08:23.:08:25.

of Conservative support. Before the referendum,

:08:26.:08:29.

she was hardly known. How difficult was it

:08:30.:08:37.

to decide to run? I feel, having played a part

:08:38.:08:39.

in showing this country the prospects for us outside

:08:40.:08:42.

of the EU, I just felt I needed to put myself forward to offer

:08:43.:08:50.

to lead the way through it, But just a couple of days

:08:51.:08:53.

into the race, she's already been I spent the best part of ten years

:08:54.:08:58.

in BZW and Barclays and the best part of ten years

:08:59.:09:09.

in Invesco perpetual. I've also had a part-time

:09:10.:09:12.

job in Sainsburys. I started life as a 14-year-old

:09:13.:09:15.

silver service waitress. You know, my CV

:09:16.:09:20.

is incredibly varied, But her backers think she can win

:09:21.:09:22.

over the Tory members I love the idea of two women

:09:23.:09:28.

battling it out, showing us exactly how politics can

:09:29.:09:34.

change for the better. Justice Secretary Michael Gove

:09:35.:09:38.

betrayed his friend Boris Johnson I'm naturally disappointed I have

:09:39.:09:40.

not been able to make it through to the final

:09:41.:09:45.

round of this leadership contest. This is a moment Theresa May's team

:09:46.:09:49.

will treasure, a more successful start to the race

:09:50.:09:51.

than they could have hoped. But now MPs lose control -

:09:52.:09:54.

the contest goes to the country. It is the Conservative Party,

:09:55.:09:59.

not Parliament, who makes the call. Laura Kuenssberg, BBC News,

:10:00.:10:03.

Westminster. And there was no break

:10:04.:10:07.

from presidential politics in the US today as Republicans in the House

:10:08.:10:09.

of Representatives grilled FBI Director James Comey on his decision

:10:10.:10:12.

that Hillary Clinton did not deserve prosecution for using

:10:13.:10:17.

a private email server And Donald Trump was also

:10:18.:10:19.

on Capitol Hill, meeting privately with Republican leaders

:10:20.:10:26.

as they try to sort out who is willing to speak

:10:27.:10:29.

at the convention later this month. I'm joined by our North America

:10:30.:10:31.

reporter, Anthony Zurcher. First of all, the FBI director got

:10:32.:10:44.

like a grilling, didn't he? The Republicans were not happy with his

:10:45.:10:47.

decision not to recommend an indictment or charges against Louis

:10:48.:10:52.

Clinton. He said there was no criminal intent on her part, and she

:10:53.:10:57.

didn't lie to the FBI. He believed that she did create this e-mail

:10:58.:10:59.

server for her convenience and not to hide document or anything like

:11:00.:11:04.

that. Obviously, Republicans were not buying that and they were

:11:05.:11:10.

expected something -- acting something more. Could they find

:11:11.:11:12.

something they can attack Hillary Clinton with? The FBI director said

:11:13.:11:18.

he had investigated whether she had lied to Congress. He needed a

:11:19.:11:23.

referral for that, and the chair said, we will give you a referral.

:11:24.:11:26.

Conceivably, we could get another round of investigations into Hillary

:11:27.:11:30.

Clinton and whether she lied in testimony before Congress. Some news

:11:31.:11:36.

on Hillary Clinton, the New York Times is reporting that she will be

:11:37.:11:39.

endorsed by her one-time rival, Bernie Sanders, next week. What will

:11:40.:11:45.

be the significance of that? It is about time. The campaign has been

:11:46.:11:47.

over since the beginning of June, and Bernie Sanders has held out. He

:11:48.:11:54.

still has a large constituency, and this will be a way to bring the

:11:55.:11:58.

party together before the Democratic convention, avoid any kind of

:11:59.:12:01.

protest or difficulty in Philadelphia when they all gathered

:12:02.:12:05.

to meet, and bring the party together, solidify her left flank so

:12:06.:12:10.

she has an enthusiasm and turnout in the general election which she will

:12:11.:12:14.

need. Turning to Donald Trump, he was in Washington today and wasn't

:12:15.:12:18.

he? Who was the meeting and how did it go? He was meeting with

:12:19.:12:21.

congressional Republicans. We have to look at Republican disunity. The

:12:22.:12:29.

people that Trump met with verse, things went well. When he got in the

:12:30.:12:34.

room with Republican senators, who were in car free election battles,

:12:35.:12:37.

there was a lot more anger, a lot more resentment from some of the

:12:38.:12:49.

sitting senators. One got into it with Donald Trump. One senator sat

:12:50.:13:01.

it out, and Donald Trump called him a loser, saying he would win in his

:13:02.:13:11.

state. Ted Cruz, one of the Republican opponents during the

:13:12.:13:14.

primary campaign, has just said that he will accept a speaking bit. Other

:13:15.:13:18.

than that, we don't know a whole lot. A populace -- popular senator

:13:19.:13:29.

from Iowa may speak. If there is anything interesting, any unusual

:13:30.:13:31.

people taking the stage, they haven't been revealed. Thank you for

:13:32.:13:33.

joining us. Well, there are still

:13:34.:13:35.

four months to go before voters head to the polls

:13:36.:13:37.

to decide this election, and the only thing for certain

:13:38.:13:39.

is that women will be decisive But what are female voters

:13:40.:13:42.

looking for in a candidate and how do Hillary Clinton

:13:43.:13:46.

and Donald Trump stack up? Those are the questions

:13:47.:13:49.

that the BBC's Katty Kay You call women you do not

:13:50.:13:51.

like fat pigs, dogs, Donald Trump's rhetoric

:13:52.:13:56.

towards women has become a flash point in a presidential election

:13:57.:14:10.

pitting a man against a woman. It is said to be

:14:11.:14:17.

the most gender-driven with Hillary Clinton the first ever

:14:18.:14:19.

female nominee for the White House. Research has showed that they have

:14:20.:14:25.

decided the last five US elections. Donald Trump is currently polling

at the Republican convention. She owns a gardening business

and likes his views on trade. I think he will do the best job

:14:52.:14:56.

to keep us safe He definitely knows

how to run a business. We are going to Philadelphia

and we are going to win! Lynn is clearly not moved

by the historic nature For many American women,

:15:09.:15:13.

the possibility of putting a woman in the White House after 44 male

:15:14.:15:19.

presidents is irresistible. Is it important for you that she is

:15:20.:15:26.

a woman and would be the Her campaign has thrown up

:15:27.:15:29.

an interesting phenomenon. A generational gap

:15:30.:15:36.

among female voters. Older women seem to support Hillary

:15:37.:15:40.

Clinton because they urgently want a female president

:15:41.:15:44.

and they want it now. Younger women tend to feel confident

:15:45.:15:47.

they are going to get one at some point in their lifetime

:15:48.:15:52.

and they are just not sure that they want it to

:15:53.:15:55.

be Hillary Clinton. Amy, a Democratic senator

:15:56.:15:59.

from Minnesota, thinks Hillary Clinton is able

:16:00.:16:02.

to successfully reach You have got a generation that

:16:03.:16:03.

did not see her in those roles. Many of them were hardly voting

:16:04.:16:08.

when she was Secretary of State. She needs to reintroduce herself

:16:09.:16:11.

in a non-primary setting Economically conservative

:16:12.:16:14.

but socially liberal. She has voted Republican

:16:15.:16:31.

and Democrat in the past. She is struggling with

:16:32.:16:35.

who to vote for this year. We need to regulate the economics

:16:36.:16:40.

in this country more. That is probably my draw,

:16:41.:16:42.

a bit, to Donald Trump. He has that economic ground and has

:16:43.:16:45.

made a successful business of it. Her foreign policy

:16:46.:16:53.

background draws me to her. I feel more confident in having

:16:54.:16:55.

somebody that has sat at the table I am very torn between being

:16:56.:16:59.

a businesswoman and being a woman. Of course, nobody knows

:17:00.:17:07.

exactly how many women will vote, or which candidate

:17:08.:17:11.

they will vote for. If we did, we would already be able

:17:12.:17:16.

to say who is going to win. What we do know is women will decide

:17:17.:17:20.

who lives in the White House after Barack Obama,

:17:21.:17:23.

whether it is America's 45th male And you can catch much more

:17:24.:17:26.

on Katty's analysis on BBC World News and on the News

:17:27.:17:33.

Channel in the UK this weekend. Now let's look at some

:17:34.:17:40.

of the day's other news. Iraqi officials say

:17:41.:17:43.

the number of people killed in Sunday's suicide bombing

:17:44.:17:45.

in Baghdad is now known to be 292. The attack targeted a shopping

:17:46.:17:49.

complex in a Shia Muslim district. The so-called Islamic State group

:17:50.:17:52.

has said it was behind the bombing, the deadliest in the country

:17:53.:17:55.

since the 2003 US-led invasion. The German parliament has passed

:17:56.:18:01.

a new law defining rape, clarifying that "No means No",

:18:02.:18:03.

even if a victim did not fight back. Critics have argued that Germany

:18:04.:18:08.

has long lagged behind other developed nations

:18:09.:18:10.

when it comes to its rape laws. The new law classifies groping

:18:11.:18:14.

as a sex crime, and makes it easier

:18:15.:18:16.

to prosecute assaults. At least 21 people have been

:18:17.:18:19.

injured, some of them seriously, after an explosion went off

:18:20.:18:22.

on a commuter train in Taipei. The capital's official news agency

:18:23.:18:24.

is reporting local police as saying the explosive

:18:25.:18:27.

looked like a firecracker. Taiwan's Premier has ordered

:18:33.:18:54.

place in the final of Euro 2016. There was a disputed penalty for

:18:55.:19:06.

France. An hour gone, a really atmospheric ground, and the majority

:19:07.:19:11.

of the fans are supporting France. The latest core remains 1-0 to

:19:12.:19:20.

France. Serena Williams will play Angelique

:19:21.:19:29.

Gerber in the women's singles final. Williams earned her place with ease,

:19:30.:19:38.

winning 6-2, 6-0. She reaches her night with Northern final. I'm very

:19:39.:19:43.

happy. I was focused today because I know we have had a. -- we have had a

:19:44.:19:52.

lot of tough matches before. Are you surprised you one as easily as you

:19:53.:19:58.

did? It is never easy. You have to fight for every point.

:19:59.:20:06.

Her opponent beat Serena's older sister, Venus. Venus won the

:20:07.:20:21.

title... It is amazing. To beat Venus, it is always a really tough

:20:22.:20:25.

match. She is a champion, and she has once the said. That is why am

:20:26.:20:30.

happy about my game and my first final here at Wimbledon.

:20:31.:20:35.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have been warned by the team that they

:20:36.:20:38.

could be punished if they crash into each other again. It comes after the

:20:39.:20:41.

two collided while disputing the lead on the final lap of Sunday's

:20:42.:20:46.

Grand Prix, which Hamilton went on to win. The team said in a statement

:20:47.:20:50.

they had strengthened the rules of engagement to include much greater

:20:51.:20:53.

deterrence to contact between the two cars. It doesn't really change

:20:54.:21:02.

anything. We are still able to race, which is a positive. There are no

:21:03.:21:08.

team orders, whatever it is called, which is great for the fans. I think

:21:09.:21:14.

ever one should be excited. And you are both completely clear what it

:21:15.:21:17.

will mean, and what these greater deterrence are? Yes. Are the scary?

:21:18.:21:29.

I should say yes. Mark Cavendish has won his latest Tour De France stage.

:21:30.:21:43.

His third win of this year's tour. Cavendish is now moved clear in

:21:44.:21:56.

stage wins. Before I go, just time to tell you that the latest score in

Marseille, with an hour gone, remains 1-0 to France.

:22:02.:22:06.

Now, more than 30 years after Ghostbusters introduced us

:22:07.:22:08.

the long-awaited remake hits the screen next week.

:22:09.:22:15.

The first film sparked huge interest in the supernatural and there

:22:16.:22:17.

are now thousands of paranormal investigators working in the US.

:22:18.:22:20.

So, when something goes bump in the night -

:22:21.:22:22.

In Maryland's historic downtown Frederick, this Italian striker

:22:23.:22:41.

subbing of a landmark. It was built in 1887. For the last 30 years, it

:22:42.:22:45.

has been a restaurant. The customers seem happy, but the staff have been

:22:46.:22:48.

having some very strange experiences. Saeed has worked for 16

:22:49.:22:56.

years and has numerous stories of spooky shenanigans, particularly in

:22:57.:23:03.

this part of the restaurant. On the stairs... You heard something

:23:04.:23:07.

running up the stairs Gretchen muck running very fast. In the hope of

:23:08.:23:13.

getting to the bottom of the Phantom footsteps, the best rod has called

:23:14.:23:22.

in a local ghostbusting team. As we go through, we set up the cameras to

:23:23.:23:25.

face certain locations. We have the DVR system hooked up now, which will

:23:26.:23:30.

be a surveillance for those cameras. We have a base station where our

:23:31.:23:36.

teams can stop by and look at any visual appearances. If there are any

:23:37.:23:45.

spirits present, can you state your name? This sandbox records what the

:23:46.:23:53.

spirits save. What they say can be startling. We just got Satan on

:23:54.:24:01.

them. We are only interacting with redeem spirits from the light. We

:24:02.:24:06.

are not entertaining that. Having detected seven spirits and something

:24:07.:24:10.

not very pleasant, the team has now switched from using a sound box. It

:24:11.:24:17.

should allow any spirits that want to doing it to articulate more

:24:18.:24:22.

clearly. Malcolm, are you there? Help me. Help me, we just got help

:24:23.:24:29.

me. What Dini to help you with? More than a third of Americans believe in

:24:30.:24:33.

ghosts. If you are not one of them, it might be worth noting that the

:24:34.:24:38.

team and most other paranormal investigators don't charge for their

:24:39.:24:43.

services. Mainly because what they find is so open to interpretation. I

:24:44.:24:50.

don't know if you could ever say without a shadow of doubt, 100%,

:24:51.:24:54.

that there will be a definitive answer to whether life after death

:24:55.:24:59.

exists, whether spirits are around us. You can have the proof that all

:25:00.:25:03.

you want, but if they don't believe it, they don't believe it. So is

:25:04.:25:09.

this restaurant haunted? Does a spirit called Malcolm really need

:25:10.:25:16.

help? And did the team actually encounter a demonic entity? At the

:25:17.:25:19.

end of the day, it depends entirely on what you believe.

:25:20.:25:33.

Very spooky. Personally, I cannot believe it is 30 years since the

:25:34.:25:45.

first Ghostbusters. I can't wait to see the all-female team! Quite the

:25:46.:25:47.

theme from tonight. Well, that brings

:25:48.:25:48.

this broadcast to a close, but remember you can find much more

:25:49.:25:50.

on all the days news at our website.
