The police chief has spoken of there being two snipers.

The central downtown area of Dallas including shops,

hotels, restaurants and bars has been evacuated.

The site is close to where former US President John F Kennedy

was assassinated in 1963 and the City Hall.

The gunfire broke out around 8:45pm local time on Thursday evening.

The protest followed police shootings of black men in Minnesota

Information coming in thick and fast, what is the latest? There have

been some chaotic scenes in Dallas over the last few hours. As you

said, and this has come from the police chief, it appears that two

snipers were responsible for shooting at ten police officers, and

three of those officers have lost their lives. Others are in a

critical condition, some are currently having surgery. This was

during a peaceful protest, the same as many others in various cities

around the US over the last few hours to protest the police

shootings. Many eyewitness talked about hearing the gunshots ringing

out, and they were diving for cover, but the crowd scattered, and that is

when the chaos started. People didn't quite know what was

happening, some video has big posted to social media. It is difficult to

see what is happening, but you can hear the gunshots and since the

confusion. The two snipers are still being searched for in downtown

Dallas. They have not been apprehended, and the place is

entirely swarmed with very heavily armed police officers. To be clear,

this is in the very centre of Dallas, a popular area for tourists

and local city dwellers to enjoy very thing. It is in the downtown

district, a social area, not far from City Hall. It is an area that

would normally be very busy, but clearly swarms of people had

descended on the area to protest and express their feelings about what

has been happening in other major cities in America over the last

couple of days, and as I say this reflect what is happening in New

York City, for example. There has been a large demonstration. Up until

this point, the demonstrations had been peaceful but sadly that has

changed. White this protest and the others you refer to, they'll refer

to how police officers had shot dead two people. One in Minnesota, one in

Louisiana, both black and vote in the space of 36 hours. Yes, two

quite separate incidents, to a large extent both caught on video, and

widely reported very quickly in social media. In fact, in the second

case, the girlfriend of the man who was shot was live streaming on

Facebook as it happened. Clearly everyone in America is acutely aware

of what has happened, and the feelings are running extremely high.

There is a lot of anger and concern, and a lot of fear. People have been

concerned that there could be some reprise Aust, that these

demonstrations could turn violent, because currently there is a track

record of that happening. There have been other incidents like this.

People worry that because of similar incidents over the past few years

that have really haunted Americans, that has now come back. People were

holding their breaths and tragically things have taken a turn for the

worse. Across the world, people I'm afraid are getting used to shootings

in America. But this particular angle, this particular week, has

been very troubling. What are the analysts, experts and social media

people saying in America about this recent trend? There are several

issues here. There is the issue of the police and how they carry out

their duties. President Obama was touching on this, talking about

police forces rooting out bias in their ranks. That is one aspect of

the story, a serious one. Then there is the issue of gun control, the

availability of funds which is an issue that simply doesn't go away.

Whether it is an incident of a white policeman killing a black man or

issues around crime and gun crime, that is a perennial issue. There is

political pressure in certain quarters to have tougher gun laws,

but they never seem to Interior lies. Key social issues here at many

levels that need to be addressed. President Obama was speaking

after landing in Poland before the details of the Dallas

incident emerged. He said that all Americans should be

concerned about the shootings. When incidents like this occur there

is a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if because

of the colour of their skin they are not being treated the same.

This is not just a black issue, it's not just a Hispanic issue.

This an American issue, that we should all care about.

All fair-minded people should be concerned.

Now, let me just say, we have extraordinary appreciation

and respect for the vast majority of police officers,

who put their lives on the line to protect us every single day.

They've got a dangerous job, it is a tough job.

Our North America correspondent Nick Bryant has spent the day

in Minnesota, the scene of the latest shooting of a black

man by police - you may find some of the images in his report

He's licensed, he's carrying, he's licensed to carry.

He was trying to get out his ID and his wallet out his pocket...

The immediate aftermath of yet another police shooting,

this time not just caught on camera, but streamed live on Facebook.

And the officer just shot him in his arm.

The female passenger in the car, Diamond Reynolds, has just

seen her boyfriend shot by a policeman.

He is fast losing blood, and fast losing consciousness.

You told him to get his ID, Sir, his driver's licence.

Please don't tell me my boyfriend just went like that.

Philando Castile had been pulled over because his rear light wasn't

working, and apparently told the officer he had

a legally-purchased, concealed weapon with him

Mr Castile had worked as a cafeteria supervisor at a local

Protesters converged on the Governor's mansion,

draping it with police tape taken from the scene of the shooting.

Giving angry voice to now-familiar cries of protest, that have echoed

Then, Diamond Reynolds stepped before the crowd carrying her young

daughter, who had witnessed everything from the back seat

Not one shot, not two shots, not three shots, not four shots,

It is the second shocking incident this week.

This is footage from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, showing a black man,

Alton Sterling, being held down by police and shot several times.

Another police shooting, another black family left to mourn,

We're seeing this with alarming regularity.

Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray.

The names associated with some of the more high-profile police

This year alone, 123 African-Americans have been killed

It's stunning to see in two days what we've been seeing for years,

and that is police killing of citizens.

And the question is, when will there be a systematic

response to what has been a systemic problem in the United States?

And I think that we've been saying this over and over again.

And I think the last two days brought this to a real tipping point

for how this country deals with policing.

With so much fury in so many communities, the fear is that this

could be the start of a long, hot summer, words which for decades

have been uttered with a sense of foreboding.

We are getting some updates, with the police chief saying that

authorities have a suspect cornered at a garage after the shooting. They

are now negotiating with that suspect. One suspects cornered, and

they are negotiating with him. The latest figures suggest that two

snipers shot 11 police officers and three of those officers hard dead.

Also, the Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said he has direct with the head

of the Texas department of public safety to offer whatever assistance

the city needs. Condolences have also been expressed, and I quote, at

times like this I must emphasise the importance of uniting as Americans.

We will keep updating you on this story as it breaks. In Iraq, at

least 30 people have been killed and 60 injured in an attack by suicide

Hamas and gunmen on a Shi'ite shrine north of Baghdad.

According to officials, the attack began when a suicide

bomber targeted policemen guarding the entrance to the Sayid Mohammed

bin Ali al-Hadi shrine in Balad, 90 kilometers north

A second bomber entered the shrine with nine gunmen targeting security

forces as well as families gathering to celebrate the Eid festival

marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Officials say a third bomber was killed.

The attack comes as the official death toll from a suicide bombing

in Baghdad on Sunday has risen to 292 people.

That attack, which took place in a busy shopping street

in the mainly Shia Karada district of Baghdad,

was claimed by the so called Islamic State.

It was the deadliest bombing in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion.

And Sally is here with all the business news and the outlook

for Tata Steel operations in the UK are in focus.

We start in the Indian business capital Mumbai,

with a story that is being closely watched here in the UK.

Britain's Business Secretary Sajid Javid will be meeting the board

High on the agenda, the fate of Tata Steel's struggling

UK business and the thousands of workers it employs.

Plans to find buyers to rescue the plants have been thrown

According to Bloomberg, 4 out of the 7 potential bidders

have backed out since the referendum.

Tata put its struggling UK business up for sale back in March.

It employs some 11 thousand people at plants across the UK,

including its huge Port Talbot plant in South Wales.

But it's losing a million pounds, 1.3 million dollars,

The price of steel has slumped since its peak in 2011

although it has been recovering in recent months.

Across Europe 320,000 people work in the steel industry.

The European Steel Association saying thousands of jobs have been

lost due to the low price, which they blame on China flooding

Now the UK's referendum vote has added further uncertainty.

We'll be speaking to our correspondent in Mumbai

A big focus on the US, they will be releasing their key employment data

Nato leaders will meet in Warsaw later today for a heads

Relations between the Alliance and Moscow have been tense

In response, Nato is deploying four multi-national battalions

in the three Baltic States and Poland.

They'll be led by the USA, Britain, Canada and Germany.

Our defence correspondent Jonathan Beale has been to Estonia

where the British led battalion is expected to be stationed.

Nato has been beefing up its military presence on its eastern

flank. Here in Estonia, soldiers from the alliance prepare for a

conventional war against their well armed enemy, like they did in the

Cold War era. Training with artillery, rockets and missiles to

repel an invasion. Old-fashioned heavy metal warfare, although there

is still a real and is to mention Russia. It's about training with our

partners. About Russia? It's about training with our partners and

making sure we know how to work together. To support the eastern

allies and show... The face of Russian aggression? It is just to

support them. In reality, this is about Russia. These aircraft are

here to send a message. Soon, there will be a continuous presence of

troops like this on the ground. At Warsaw, Nato leaders will confirm

they are deploying about 5000 soldiers in Russia. Nato has been

stepping up its pressures on the eastern flank, as well as its

military strength, with around 500 British troops to be stationed here

in Estonia from next year. Nato's reinforcements come at a critical

time for Estonia. It is a reminder that only a quarter of a century

ago, they regained their freedom from the shackles of the old soviet

union. These people are just 30 kilometres from the Russian border,

and Russia's recent intervention in the -- in Ukraine has made them

nervous. It has made them nervous, and showed them that Russia are

willing and able to use the conventional military power in order

to achieve their political objectives. There is the danger of

poking that there. Nato still wants a dialogue with Moscow, they invited

Russian observers to recent exercises. But Russia has also

responded with even larger military manoeuvres on its side of the

border. It has not yet been described as a new Cold War, at

Nato's enhanced presence is likely to raise tensions --. -- but.

This Saturday marks the first anniversary of a massive crackdown

Hundreds of activists were taken away.

Some of them are still in custody, awaiting trial and possibly life

Their families say the detained lawyers have had no access

China correspondent Stephen McDonell met a group of the lawyers'

A year after their husbands were taken away by Chinese police,

Li Wenzu and Huang Qiaoling have still not been able to visit them.

On the ninth of July 2015, officials here launched a massive

offensive against China's human rights lawyers,

turning the lives of their families upside down.

Huang Quanzhang and Li Heping were amongst the hundreds of lawyers

The BBC believes 17 of them are still being held,

At least nine are facing state subversion charges,

which could lead to life imprisonment.

The stress on those close to these lawyers remains considerable.

TRANSLATION: Every day, I'm really sad.

I cry because I'm worried about his safety.

I don't even know whether he is dead or alive.

I'm so worried I can't sleep and I need to take pills.

TRANSLATION: We've been through a few stages.

At first, we were all pretty lonely and desperate,

Then, after a while, the relatives all started talking

to one another, so we weren't so lonely, and gave

We encourage one another to remain positive.

We ask them about how they're managing to get

TRANSLATION: The authorities want us to wash our faces with tears.

They want us to break down and hide in corners,

feeling that we have no support, but lots of strangers have called

TRANSLATION: At the time my husband was taken away, my son was two

so he has no way of understanding this.

How can you tell a two-and-a-half-year-old

that the police have taken your father away?

So I had no choice but to lie to him, to tell him that dad is away

on business, that daddy will be back when he finishes,

and that he loves and misses you very much.

Earlier this week, the wives of six detained men protested in front

of Beijing's Supreme People's Procuratorate.

On their dresses they wrote messages of support for their husbands.

But, for the moment, nothing has changed.

In China, realistically, when people are detained for this

long and face this type of charge, they tend to lose in court,

meaning that it could be quite a long time before these lawyers can

Well, if there's one street food snack that nearly everyone

in Kolkata loves and eats regularly, it would have to be jhal muri.

It's also a great leveller, you'll often see businessmen

queueing for it alongside the city's poorest residents.

Our own Justin Rowlatt went to see what all the fuss is about.

I am in the mighty capital of Bengal, Kolkata.

Like the rest of India, it has its own distinctive

and delicious food traditions, and you can taste some of them

in its most celebrated street food, jhal muri.

So this is Sao and this is jhal, chilli sauce.

And this is puffed rice, essentially Rice Krispies.

So he puts a few handfuls of the puffed rice into the pot,

then he adds some chickpeas, and then he adds a few cornflakes,

Some chopped coconut, some cucumber, a bit of potato.

There is tomato, there's onion, there is coriander and there

is chilli in there, too, and then he puts in this chilli

paste of his, give it a bit of spice.

He squeezes on a little bit of lemon.

And now an essential ingredient, very Bengali, this -

a bit of mustard oil goes in, and the trick now is to mix

the whole thing up, get it all coated.

And then into one of his little recyclable bags, made

In it goes, and you've got a very tasty snack.

Now here is where it gets complicated because there

are actually similar dishes all over India.

So it would be dangerous for me to tell you that Sao's jhal muri

Back to our breaking story in Dallas, a fourth police officer is

reported to have died as a result of those shootings. In total, the -- 11

offices were shot by snipers, and four are known to have died.
