Welcome to BBC News, broadcasting to viewers on public

television in the US and around the globe.

:00:07.:00:09.

Our top stories: More protests in the United States,

:00:10.:00:16.

as President Obama says all Americans should be deeply

:00:17.:00:18.

troubled by the recent shootings of black men by police officers.

:00:19.:00:23.

Reports in the last hour say two policemen in Dallas have been shot,

:00:24.:00:26.

In Iraq, at least 30 people have been killed and more than 60

:00:27.:00:34.

injured, in a suicide attack on a Shia shrine north of Baghdad.

:00:35.:00:41.

And one of these two politicians could become Britain's next Prime

:00:42.:00:44.

It is now certain the new leader will be a woman.

:00:45.:01:19.

Reports from Dallas say several police officers have been shot

:01:20.:01:24.

during protests against recent police shootings in Minnesota and

:01:25.:01:29.

Louisiana. Details are still emerging but one organiser of the

:01:30.:01:35.

protest says that eight shots have been fired. The incident comes as

all Americans. When incidents like this occur,

:02:12.:02:12.

there's a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if,

:02:16.:02:21.

it's not just a Hispanic issue. This an American issue,

:02:22.:02:39.

that we should all care about. All fair-minded people

:02:40.:02:45.

should be concerned. Now, let me just say,

:02:46.:02:51.

we have extraordinary appreciation and respect for the vast

:02:52.:02:59.

majority of police officers, who put their lives on the line

:03:00.:03:01.

to protect us every single day, they've got a dangerous

:03:02.:03:07.

job, it is a tough job. Our North America correspondent

:03:08.:03:13.

Nick Bryant has spent the day in Minnesota, where the shooting

:03:14.:03:16.

happened, and you may find some of the images in his

:03:17.:03:18.

report distressing. He's licensed, he's carrying,

:03:36.:03:40.

:05:38.:05:47.

what we've been seeing for years, and that is police

:05:48.:05:53.

killing of citizens. And the question is,

:05:54.:05:57.

when will there be a systematic response to what has been a systemic

:05:58.:06:00.

problem in the United States? And I think that we've been saying

:06:01.:06:07.

this over and over again. And I think the last two days

:06:08.:06:14.

brought this to a real tipping point for how this country

:06:15.:06:17.

deals with policing. With so much fury in so many

:06:18.:06:23.

communities, the fear is that this could be the start of a long,

:06:24.:06:31.

hot summer, words which for decades have been uttered with

:06:32.:06:35.

a sense of foreboding. Let's get the latest on media

:06:36.:06:53.

reports about two police officers being shot during a protest in

:06:54.:06:58.

Dallas. The BBC's correspondent is in Dallas. We don't know many

:06:59.:07:03.

details but tell us what we know. Well, we know that these protests

:07:04.:07:06.

have been going on in downtown Dallas for the last few hours.

:07:07.:07:10.

Witnesses say it was a very peaceful protest until they heard shots

:07:11.:07:14.

ringing out. Some people talk of possibly 30 or 40 shots, in fact

:07:15.:07:20.

there is video that is on social media where those shots can very

:07:21.:07:25.

clearly be heard. A lot of confusion, people dive into the

:07:26.:07:29.

ground, to safety. And the police now are swarming that area, heavily

:07:30.:07:34.

armed police officers have moved into the area. According to local

:07:35.:07:38.

media reports, two officers have been shot. We do not know the extent

:07:39.:07:44.

of their injuries. And some people, some witnesses, have talked of

:07:45.:07:49.

possibly bystanders being shot as well. But again we have no

:07:50.:07:55.

confirmation on that either. And do we know where the gunshot came from?

:07:56.:08:02.

We don't know, precisely. There is some speculation that it could have

:08:03.:08:06.

been a sniper who was perched in a nearby building. That is where the

:08:07.:08:10.

attention seems to be being focused. The police that have moved into the

:08:11.:08:15.

area are looking at buildings that were surrounding the area where the

:08:16.:08:19.

demonstration was taking place. But I should emphasise that the police

:08:20.:08:23.

are not confirming this. There has been a certain amount of confusion,

:08:24.:08:28.

especially amongst eyewitnesses and bystanders. Concerned obviously

:08:29.:08:31.

about their own safety and telling the story as they understand it. And

:08:32.:08:35.

as I say some people posting video to social media, where it is

:08:36.:08:39.

difficult to see what is happening, but you can certainly hear some

:08:40.:08:43.

gunshots. In fact, several gunshots ringing out. And because, of course,

:08:44.:08:49.

not just in Dallas but protests have been taking place across the country

:08:50.:08:53.

against police murders of two black men, one in Minnesota and another

:08:54.:09:00.

one in Louisiana recently. That's right, clearly there have been

:09:01.:09:05.

protests in those cities, in New York city as well there has been

:09:06.:09:08.

quite a significant protest. They have not been any other reports of

:09:09.:09:13.

any violence or indeed any trouble. At it does tell the story of what is

:09:14.:09:17.

happening in America today. And that is that a lot of people are very,

:09:18.:09:23.

very angry and concerned about what has happened over the last couple of

:09:24.:09:27.

days, as you say, two black men being shot dead by the police in

:09:28.:09:32.

quite separate incidents. And emotions are running very high. And

:09:33.:09:37.

clearly we have seen that in New York city, a demonstration that, and

:09:38.:09:41.

this one in Dallas as well. Dallas incident, and as I say we are still

:09:42.:09:45.

trying to gather information into exactly what is happening but it is

:09:46.:09:49.

the first incident that seems to have turned violent. Those details

:09:50.:09:53.

to be confirmed. And a lot of confusion still on the ground.

:09:54.:09:57.

In Iraq, at least 30 people have been killed and 60 injured,

:09:58.:10:04.

in an attack by suicide bombers and gunmen on a Shia shrine

:10:05.:10:08.

According to officials, the attack started when a suicide

:10:09.:10:10.

bomber targeted policemen guarding the entrance to the Sayid Mohammed

:10:11.:10:13.

bin Ali al-Hadi shrine in Balad, 90 kilometres north of the capital,

:10:14.:10:16.

A second bomber entered the shrine with nine gunmen,

:10:17.:10:23.

targeting security forces as well as families gathering

:10:24.:10:25.

to celebrate the Eid festival, marking the end of the holy

:10:26.:10:27.

Officials say a third bomber was killed.

:10:28.:10:35.

The attack comes as the official death toll from a suicide bombing

:10:36.:10:39.

in Baghdad on Sunday has risen to 292.

:10:40.:10:43.

That attack, which took place in a busy shopping street

:10:44.:10:46.

in the mainly-Shia Karrada district of Baghdad,

:10:47.:10:48.

was claimed by the so-called Islamic State.

:10:49.:10:51.

It was the deadliest bombing in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003.

:10:52.:10:54.

We will bring you more on this latest attack as we get it.

:10:55.:11:02.

Voters in Japan will elect members of the upper house of the parliament

:11:03.:11:06.

on Sunday, and the stakes are particularly high

:11:07.:11:08.

If his group can increase its majority, he might gain

:11:09.:11:13.

the power to try and change the country's constitution.

:11:14.:11:15.

Stephen Evans has this report from Tokyo.

:11:16.:11:23.

If the government can win more seats in this election,

:11:24.:11:29.

so it has a two-thirds majority in the upper house of the Japanese

:11:30.:11:32.

parliament, the first constitutional change in seven

:11:33.:11:36.

For 70 years there's been no change at all.

:11:37.:11:44.

But the ruling LDP has always wanted to revise the constitution.

:11:45.:11:47.

They regard it as an imposition by the American forces,

:11:48.:11:51.

and so there is a very strong baggage attached.

:11:52.:11:58.

The baggage is that Japan's constitution is pacifist.

:11:59.:12:03.

There is a navy, but by law it can only defend the homeland.

:12:04.:12:08.

The army can't fight abroad without constitutional change.

:12:09.:12:12.

Prime Minister Abe is out campaigning.

:12:13.:12:18.

He doesn't mention wanting to change the constitution,

:12:19.:12:21.

but his opponents say that is the intention.

:12:22.:12:28.

Itsuki Kurosawa reads her daughter stories of war.

:12:29.:12:33.

These images play strongly in a country that was all

:12:34.:12:36.

TRANSLATION: When Prime Minister Shinzo Abe came back to power,

:12:37.:12:44.

3.5 years ago, his promise was to change the constitution.

:12:45.:13:01.

My daughter was eight months old then, and I felt I could only

:13:02.:13:04.

give her a peaceful future if I could campaign to stop that.

:13:05.:13:07.

The subtext of this election is whether Japan should

:13:08.:13:10.

That is becoming a theme on this planet now.

:13:11.:13:13.

As economic power shifts and uncertainty arises,

:13:14.:13:15.

British politics and stability haven't exactly gone hand-in-hand

:13:16.:13:35.

lately, but one thing is now certain.

:13:36.:13:37.

A woman is on track to become the next Prime Minister.

:13:38.:13:40.

In their ballot to select a new party leader, Conservative MPs

:13:41.:13:42.

have narrowed it down to Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom.

:13:43.:13:45.

Party members will decide the winner in September.

:13:46.:13:47.

Our political editor Laura Kuenssberg has

:13:48.:13:48.

all the details, and there is flash photography in her report.

:13:49.:14:03.

The march of Theresa May, striding easily on to the ticket.

:14:04.:14:07.

Miles ahead of both her rivals today.

:14:08.:14:11.

Her supporters already crying "Prime Minister."

:14:12.:14:13.

This vote shows that the Conservative Party can come

:14:14.:14:21.

together and that under my leadership it will.

:14:22.:14:22.

We need proven leadership to negotiate the best deal

:14:23.:14:25.

for leaving the European Union, to unite our party and our country

:14:26.:14:28.

and to make Britain a country that works, not for the privileged few,

:14:29.:14:31.

And in the grand rooms of Westminster, the vote was clear.

:14:32.:14:35.

Therefore Michael Gove with the lowest number of votes has

:14:36.:14:53.

With Michael Gove out, and the Energy Minister,

:14:54.:14:56.

Andrea Leadsom, trailing, Mrs May's supporters were delighted.

:14:57.:15:00.

Not quite waving on the steps of Number Ten yet, but she has just

:15:01.:15:03.

won the very clear endorsement of the majority of Tory MPs.

:15:04.:15:06.

Her backers hope her experience makes her the clear favourite.

:15:07.:15:12.

She can truly say, as we go to the country,

:15:13.:15:15.

Are you surprised by how strong the result was?

:15:16.:15:19.

Well, she got 165 earlier in the week, a fantastic,

:15:20.:15:21.

To go forward even further and get to touching the 200,

:15:22.:15:25.

it is a clear indication of what parliamentarians think

:15:26.:15:27.

I can't hear you, are you ready for Andrea?

:15:28.:15:37.

Traditional Tories, though, are excited

:15:38.:15:39.

The eurosceptic Energy Minister is far less experienced.

:15:40.:15:42.

Her colleagues need reassurance about her record.

:15:43.:15:44.

But one wing of the party is enthusiastic enough to march

:15:45.:15:47.

along the river in in an unusual show of Conservative support.

:15:48.:15:49.

She was hardly known before the referendum.

:15:50.:15:59.

How difficult was it to decide to run?

:16:00.:16:02.

I feel, having played a part in showing this country

:16:03.:16:04.

the prospects for us outside of the EU, I just felt I needed

:16:05.:16:08.

to put myself forward to offer to lead the way through it

:16:09.:16:10.

But just a couple of days into the race she's already been

:16:11.:16:23.

I spent the best part of ten years in BZW and Barclays and the best

:16:24.:16:33.

part of ten years in Invesco Perpetual.

:16:34.:16:35.

I've also had a part-time job in Sainsbury's.

:16:36.:16:38.

I started life as a 14-year-old silver service waitress.

:16:39.:16:42.

My CV is incredibly varied and it is all absolutely true.

:16:43.:16:44.

I think this is, you know, ridiculous.

:16:45.:16:48.

Her backers, though, think she can win over the Tory

:16:49.:16:51.

I love the idea of two women battling it out, showing us exactly

:16:52.:16:59.

how politics can change for the better.

:17:00.:17:00.

The Justice Secretary Michael Gove betrayed his friend Boris Johnson

:17:01.:17:03.

I'm naturally disappointed that I haven't been able to make it

:17:04.:17:08.

through to the final round of this leadership contest.

:17:09.:17:11.

This is a moment Theresa May's team will treasure, a more

:17:12.:17:14.

successful start to the race than they could have hoped.

:17:15.:17:17.

But now MPs lose control and the contest goes to the country.

:17:18.:17:20.

It's the Conservative Party, not Parliament, who makes the call.

:17:21.:17:22.

Laura Kuenssberg, BBC News, Westminster.

:17:23.:17:40.

The murder of a shopkeeper in Scotland in March sent shockwaves

:17:41.:17:47.

through the country. On Thursday, his killer pleaded guilty. This is

:17:48.:17:54.

believed to be linked to another high-profile killing in Pakistan.

:17:55.:17:58.

A well loved British Pakistanis shopkeeper is brutally murdered by.

:17:59.:18:11.

The family are left asking why. Initially, tabloids linked to murder

:18:12.:18:18.

to a Facebook post hours before his death. Some think he was killed for

:18:19.:18:32.

belonging to a controversial sect. This was put together in Bradford,

:18:33.:18:37.

carried out in Scotland, but was inspired by actions in Pakistan.

:18:38.:18:41.

This was linked with the killing of a Pakistani politician five years

:18:42.:18:46.

ago. Both were accused by some of having committed blasphemy. Today in

:18:47.:18:52.

court, the killer pleaded guilty to murder, saying he was defending

:18:53.:18:58.

Islam. I wouldn't call him a man, I don't have any message that monster.

:18:59.:19:06.

He basically took away a person who was peaceful, who wanted unity in

:19:07.:19:11.

the world, who wanted the communities to unite, who wanted to

:19:12.:19:22.

help the community, and him harming someone of peace is literally, he

:19:23.:19:35.

is, he is the enemy of humanity. On the 29th of March, Asad Shah had

:19:36.:19:39.

been working in his family's shock when he was brutally attacked. After

:19:40.:19:43.

stabbing him to death, his killer, who had travelled 200 miles from

:19:44.:19:48.

Bradford, calmly waited in a bus stop opposite for the police. His

:19:49.:19:52.

brother witnessed the attack but still finds it too difficult to talk

:19:53.:19:56.

about. He told me his father had brought the family to Scott and in

:19:57.:20:00.

the 90s from Pakistan to escape religious intolerance. His pharmacy

:20:01.:20:08.

was set on fire by extremists and his hospital was burnt down, and we

:20:09.:20:14.

had an apartment above the pharmacy, where my parents were with the kids.

:20:15.:20:20.

It was set on fire, might have thought about our future, and he

:20:21.:20:26.

thought we would be safer in Britain. Unimaginable what has

:20:27.:20:32.

happened to my brother, and it was my dad trying to protect the kids,

:20:33.:20:35.

thinking something like this would happen in Pakistan, and it has

:20:36.:20:44.

happened here. It seems Asad Ahmed wasn't targeted for his faith but

:20:45.:20:48.

because of videos he was posting online. Recorded in his shop but

:20:49.:20:53.

discussing his beliefs. In some he claims to be a prophet. One who

:20:54.:20:59.

watch the videos and was incensed by them is this 32-year-old man, a

:21:00.:21:03.

minicab driver from Bradford who would go on to murder Asad Shah. He

:21:04.:21:09.

was a fervent admirer of another killer, who had murdered a prominent

:21:10.:21:16.

Liberal Pakistani politician because he was proposing to reform

:21:17.:21:18.

Pakistan's controversial blasphemy laws. He was executed earlier this

:21:19.:21:26.

year, but many in Pakistan held up to hero, saying he defended the

:21:27.:21:29.

honour of the Prophet. Thousands turned out for his funeral. His

:21:30.:21:40.

brother said Ahmed had talked to him about the Glasgow shopkeeper.

:21:41.:21:50.

Photo tribute online betray the two killers together. The killer was

:21:51.:21:59.

inspired by the example. He wasn't the only person in Britain

:22:00.:22:20.

to admire Mumdaz Qadri. Others expressed support for the him. Both

:22:21.:22:29.

Ahmed and Mumdaz Qadri come from a strand of Islam that is normally

:22:30.:22:32.

associate with a spiritual, liberal interpretation of religion. One that

:22:33.:22:36.

completely opposes Al Qaeda and ISIS. At the murders they committed

:22:37.:22:45.

upsets the simplistic idea that shows some sects are violent and

:22:46.:22:50.

others peaceful. Extremism is more complex. Tonight, Ahmed faces a

:22:51.:22:58.

lengthy jail sentence. Even from behind bars he is able to spread his

:22:59.:23:02.

message. Here, he was seen sending it greetings this week. The message

:23:03.:23:09.

ends with a chilling slogan. The penalty for those who insult the

:23:10.:23:12.

profit, cut their heads from their bodies. The man who murdered your

:23:13.:23:17.

brother, he said he did so because he was defending the honour of the

:23:18.:23:22.

Prophet Muhammad, because he says your brother was claiming to be a

:23:23.:23:26.

prophet. Muhamed would not have done anything like that. I think it is

:23:27.:23:32.

very clear when you look at the history, he didn't resort to

:23:33.:23:39.

violence and things like this. Asad Shah's family have been torn apart

:23:40.:23:43.

by the murder. They want to preserve his memory but are in fear of their

:23:44.:23:47.

lives. It has been very difficult for the family. The family don't

:23:48.:23:57.

feel safe any more living here in Scotland. And it has split the

:23:58.:24:06.

family apart since the incident, and some members of the family have left

:24:07.:24:18.

Scotland or in process of leaving and it really shouldn't have come to

:24:19.:24:19.

this. Let's bring you back to the news

breaking in the past power. Earlier we were saying at least two police

:24:37.:24:40.

officers have been shot in Dallas, where protests have been taking

:24:41.:24:45.

place. Now we believe three police officers have sweeping shot. The

:24:46.:24:49.

incident happened during a protest about the recent shootings of like

:24:50.:24:54.

men by police in Minnesota and Louisiana. You are seeing the

:24:55.:25:00.

footage from Dallas where the shooting took place. And of course

:25:01.:25:06.

these two shootings were several of many that we have been reporting

:25:07.:25:12.

about. They have been not just in Dallas, but protests across the

:25:13.:25:19.

country. In the past four hours arriving in Poland for a summit,

:25:20.:25:26.

Barack Obama said the shootings by police should be of concern to all

:25:27.:25:30.

Americans. He was speaking before the incident in Dallas, where we now

:25:31.:25:36.

understand that the number of injured officers is three. They were

:25:37.:25:43.

shot during demonstrations and footage showed a heavy police

:25:44.:25:46.

presence, with offices taking cover behind vehicles on the street. That

:25:47.:25:51.

is the latest we have, we will bring you more later.

:25:52.:26:06.

Conditions are looking pretty unsettled now for the next

:26:07.:26:08.

There will be some warmth and humidity in the air

:26:09.:26:12.

during the course of the weekend as well.
