This is Breakfast, with Naga Munchetty. | :00:00. | :00:09.
The Queen will pay tribute to "ordinary people doing | :00:10. | :00:11.
extraordinary things" when she delivers her annual | :00:12. | :00:13.
Her Majesty will say that she draws strength from meeting those | :00:14. | :00:21.
who inspire others, and will recognise the achievements | :00:22. | :00:23.
of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes. | :00:24. | :00:37.
Good morning, it's Christmas Day, Sunday, 25th December. | :00:38. | :00:39.
A Russian military plane with more than 90 people onboard has | :00:40. | :00:50.
disappeared just minutes after takeoff from the Black Sea resort | :00:51. | :00:52.
off Sochi. The Archbishop of Westminster has | :00:53. | :00:54.
spoken of the "anxiety and uncertainty" felt | :00:55. | :00:56.
by many in the world as he gave his Christmas sermon | :00:57. | :00:58.
during midnight mass. As a child in care the poet | :00:59. | :01:02.
Lemn Sissay used to dread Christmas. We'll hear how he's now trying | :01:03. | :01:06.
to make it a magical day for those For a lot of care leavers the memory | :01:07. | :01:19.
is about one. We are creating memories. | :01:20. | :01:20.
Matt Goss is among the guests on the Strictly Christmas Special | :01:21. | :01:23.
I've been to take a sneak peek behind the scenes. | :01:24. | :01:26.
Good morning. A very mild Christmas to you. It doesn't feel much like | :01:27. | :01:38.
Christmas, but it will turn cold at today from the north. Windy, coming | :01:39. | :01:46.
from Scotland. The full forecast coming up. | :01:47. | :01:48.
The Queen has chosen 'inspiration' as the theme of her Christmas | :01:49. | :01:51.
broadcast this year, and will speak of drawing strength | :01:52. | :01:54.
from meeting ordinary people, who have done extraordinary things. | :01:55. | :01:58.
She will spend today at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk | :01:59. | :02:01.
with other members of the Royal Family. | :02:02. | :02:03.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will spend Christmas Day | :02:04. | :02:06.
with the Middleton family at their home in Berkshire. | :02:07. | :02:08.
Here's our royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell. | :02:09. | :02:12.
The queen recorded this year's broadcast a few days ago. Its theme | :02:13. | :02:20.
this year is inspiration and in the broadcast will reflect on the | :02:21. | :02:24.
achievements of Paralympic and Olympic athletes, any of whom she | :02:25. | :02:28.
met at a palace reception in October and his achievements she will say a | :02:29. | :02:32.
now inspiring others. And in this year when the queen has marked her | :02:33. | :02:37.
90th birthday, she will refer to the inspirational work of the many | :02:38. | :02:40.
charities with which she has been associated during her rain and we'll | :02:41. | :02:43.
talk about the work of the many unsung heroes she meets around the | :02:44. | :02:46.
country. Carers, community leaders and good neighbours. Ordinary | :02:47. | :02:51.
people, as she puts it, doing extra ordinary things. The departure of | :02:52. | :02:56.
the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh Cassandra to be delayed for 24 hours | :02:57. | :03:00.
earlier in the week" were said to be from heavy colds. -- because both | :03:01. | :03:07.
were said. But there's no reason to think they would be to any other | :03:08. | :03:10.
members of the Royal family this morning the Christmas Day service. | :03:11. | :03:17.
There will be sadness at the news that Zara Tyndall has lost the baby | :03:18. | :03:20.
she was expecting with her husband. It would have been their second | :03:21. | :03:25.
child. Absent from Sandrigham Beach he will be the Duke and Duchess of | :03:26. | :03:28.
Cambridge and their two children. In a break with tradition they are | :03:29. | :03:31.
having a family Christmas in Berkshire, at the home of the | :03:32. | :03:34.
Duchess's parents. Let's speak now to our reporter | :03:35. | :03:36.
Emilia Papadopoulos, who is at Sandringham | :03:37. | :03:39.
for us this morning. Merry Christmas and good morning. | :03:40. | :03:47.
What can we expect from the day ahead? A very Merry Christmas and | :03:48. | :03:55.
good morning. I am in Santa -- Santa can. In a few hours the crowds will | :03:56. | :03:59.
gather, all hoping to catch a glimpse of the queen and the royal | :04:00. | :04:04.
family as they make their way to church for the traditional morning | :04:05. | :04:08.
service. Before that the Queen will come to receive communion privately, | :04:09. | :04:15.
that is if she is good -- in good health. They were here to arrive on | :04:16. | :04:20.
Wednesday but came by helicopter on Thursday. The royal watchers will | :04:21. | :04:24.
definitely be hoping to see Her Majesty on Christmas morning. Many | :04:25. | :04:29.
of them were also hoping to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but I | :04:30. | :04:33.
can tell you that they will be spending Christmas with the | :04:34. | :04:37.
Middleton family in Berkshire, along with Prince George and Princess | :04:38. | :04:40.
Charlotte. But they did have a festive lunch with the Queen at | :04:41. | :04:43.
Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. At Prince Harry and other members of | :04:44. | :04:47.
the family are expected to be here today. They all arrived yesterday | :04:48. | :04:51.
for the traditional Christmas celebrations and many other families | :04:52. | :04:55.
this is a chance for them to all get together and catch up after a very | :04:56. | :04:58.
busy year, so they will head the church later after a full English | :04:59. | :05:02.
breakfast and then go home for Christmas lunch and settle down to | :05:03. | :05:07.
watch the Queen's speech. But we are expecting the Queen and the Duke of | :05:08. | :05:11.
Edinburgh to leave the family to church on Christmas morning. Thanks | :05:12. | :05:12.
very much. A Russian military plane has | :05:13. | :05:22.
disappeared from radar just minutes after taking off from the Black Sea | :05:23. | :05:25.
resort at Sochi. There were as many | :05:26. | :05:27.
as 91 people onboard, 83 passengers and | :05:28. | :05:29.
eight crew members. They say that the plane | :05:30. | :05:31.
was travelling to Syria and that search and rescue teams have now | :05:32. | :05:34.
been dispatched to try to find it. Britain's senior Anglican | :05:35. | :05:37.
and Catholic archbishops are addressing uncertainty | :05:38. | :05:39.
in their Christmas sermons. Later this morning, Archbishop | :05:40. | :05:42.
of Canterbury Justin Welby will talk about fear and division in the world | :05:43. | :05:45.
as 2016 draws to a close. Last night, the leader | :05:46. | :05:51.
of Britain's Catholics spoke Here's our religious affairs | :05:52. | :05:53.
correspondent Martin Bashir. A traditional start to Christmas and | :05:54. | :06:05.
a solemn midnight mass at Westminster Cathedral. Cardinal | :06:06. | :06:12.
Vincent Nichols began his sermon by quoting the poet WB Yeats, referring | :06:13. | :06:17.
to a Toby Rowland year, with many fearing that things may fall apart | :06:18. | :06:22.
at the centre can't hold. -- a turbulent year. The last six months | :06:23. | :06:27.
in particular has seen widespread anxiety and uncertainty at many | :06:28. | :06:32.
levels, in this country and in those major partnerships and neighbours | :06:33. | :06:37.
that we have. With Europe, with America, with the Middle East, | :06:38. | :06:43.
financially, economically. It is an unsettling time. | :06:44. | :06:50.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who, like last year, will | :06:51. | :06:56.
deliver his Christmas message later this morning, will also address the | :06:57. | :07:00.
division and uncertainty that is marked global politics. Cardinal | :07:01. | :07:05.
Nichols said the answer to our insecurity was neither materialism | :07:06. | :07:11.
nor the pursuit of selfish interest, but rather a renewed focus on the | :07:12. | :07:17.
life of Christ. Cardinal Nichols concreted his midnight sermon by | :07:18. | :07:22.
emphasising the fact of Christ's birth, which he said was marked in | :07:23. | :07:26.
time, recorded in the Gospels and celebrated today. | :07:27. | :07:31.
The American president-elect Donald Trump says he intends | :07:32. | :07:35.
to close his charitable foundation to avoid any conflict of interest | :07:36. | :07:38.
The Trump Foundation is currently being investigated | :07:39. | :07:42.
by New York's attorney general, to establish whether it supported | :07:43. | :07:44.
a Republican political campaign in Florida in 2013. | :07:45. | :07:48.
Lynn Sweet is a journalist for the Chicago Sun Times in Washington. | :07:49. | :07:57.
At the bottom line here is that Donald Trump does not give any of | :07:58. | :08:03.
his own money to the foundation. He has not given any of his own money | :08:04. | :08:10.
between 2009 and 2014, sell at the heart of this is a foundation that | :08:11. | :08:14.
goes to other people to ask for money. Then there is another set of | :08:15. | :08:19.
controversies and this is what the attorney general and New York is | :08:20. | :08:23.
looking at, is whether or not there is self dealing. You're not supposed | :08:24. | :08:27.
to use a non-profit foundation in the United States to make local | :08:28. | :08:32.
contributions, or to help your business. That's at the heart of it. | :08:33. | :08:34.
Thousands of people are being urged to leave their homes | :08:35. | :08:37.
in the Philippines as a super typhoon roars towards | :08:38. | :08:39.
Typhoon Nok-Ten is expected to hit today, | :08:40. | :08:42.
Dozens of ports have been closed, as officials warn of potentially | :08:43. | :08:47.
Tributes have been paid to Status Quo's Rick Parfitt, | :08:48. | :08:53.
who's died in hospital in Spain at the age of 68. | :08:54. | :08:58.
The guitarist had suffered a series of health problems, | :08:59. | :09:00.
The Queen guitarist Brian May said he had "truly joyfully | :09:01. | :09:06.
rocked our world", while Midge Ure said the news was "dreadfully sad". | :09:07. | :09:10.
The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has cut some | :09:11. | :09:12.
of his country's funding to United Nations agencies. | :09:13. | :09:16.
He's responding to Friday night's UN security council | :09:17. | :09:20.
resolution demanding an end to settlement activities | :09:21. | :09:24.
in the occupied Palestinian territory. | :09:25. | :09:28.
He said the resolution was biased and shameful. | :09:29. | :09:31.
Staff in a hospital in the American city Albuquerque have been making | :09:32. | :09:34.
the most of the special deliveries this Christmas. | :09:35. | :09:38.
New born babies have been keeping warm inside stockings. | :09:39. | :09:41.
It's become something of a tradition and volunteers say that some parents | :09:42. | :09:47.
still have their stockings, even though their children | :09:48. | :09:48.
Although it seems not everyone this year was equally impressed | :09:49. | :09:54.
We'll get the weather with Nick in a few minutes' time. | :09:55. | :10:01.
For many of us Christmas is a time to reflect on the events of the past | :10:02. | :10:05.
12 months, and for Christians living in Syria that means reflecting | :10:06. | :10:09.
on another year of devastating conflict and crisis. | :10:10. | :10:14.
Before the war began, Christians made up around 10% | :10:15. | :10:17.
It's estimated around half of them have now fled the country. | :10:18. | :10:21.
Pastor Edward Awabdeh is the head of a church in Damascus. | :10:22. | :10:27.
Thank you very much for joining us on BBC Breakfast this morning. Merry | :10:28. | :10:34.
Christmas to you. Tell us what's happening where you are. Thank you | :10:35. | :10:40.
very much, Merry Christmas to you and all of your audience. We are | :10:41. | :10:44.
really celebrating Christmas this year, despite off the pain that goes | :10:45. | :10:51.
on, but we thank God that we are enjoying this great event. We trust | :10:52. | :10:59.
in Jesus Christ to change things and change hearts and bring the light | :11:00. | :11:09.
back to country. I'm going to have to apologise to you, the connection | :11:10. | :11:14.
we have to you is not very good and we are struggling to establish what | :11:15. | :11:18.
you are saying very clearly. I assure you can hear me. I wish you | :11:19. | :11:23.
glad tidings and safety today, for you and all of your congregation and | :11:24. | :11:28.
wish you well in the church where you are in Damascus. Thank you. | :11:29. | :11:34.
Christmas is a time for family, but if you don't have one it can be | :11:35. | :11:41.
difficult. The poet was fostered as a baby and then he spent five years | :11:42. | :11:49.
in and out of foster homes. So every Christmas he has special Christmas | :11:50. | :11:54.
dinners for young people who have left the care system. We went to | :11:55. | :11:58.
visit as he prepared for one of those dinners. | :11:59. | :11:59.
Not everyone has someone at Christmas. You are better with | :12:00. | :12:07.
words. I'd better with words. This man understands this. Also, Pollitt, | :12:08. | :12:18.
broadcaster, orphan. -- author, poet. There was nobody there. I was | :12:19. | :12:24.
on my own. If I visited a friend's house, I often felt I was the boy | :12:25. | :12:28.
with no family who was going to visit families, you know? Jingle | :12:29. | :12:34.
bells, jingle all the way. Here in Hackney he is getting ready for one | :12:35. | :12:37.
of his care leaders Christmas dinners, a project that has grown | :12:38. | :12:42.
from one city to five cities in four years. All of the gifts have been | :12:43. | :12:47.
donated by strangers and the parties will all be run by volunteers. Do we | :12:48. | :12:54.
not know the words to jingle Bells? The only reason we do the Christmas | :12:55. | :12:58.
dinner is so that those young care leaders go away with a memory that | :12:59. | :13:03.
they can look onto next year. That's all Christmas is, the making of a | :13:04. | :13:08.
memory for you to look onto next year. So we all come around the | :13:09. | :13:15.
Christmas dinner table. And we remember it was incredible. For a | :13:16. | :13:19.
lot of care leavers, the memory was a bad one. We are creating memories. | :13:20. | :13:28.
This is his passion and for the team that passion is infectious. Amanda | :13:29. | :13:39.
is sorting everybody out. We have 20 volunteers, 60 young people on four | :13:40. | :13:46.
hairstylists, artists, musicians, social workers coming down to do a | :13:47. | :13:50.
really amazing Christmas Day for young people. Sabrina is the hair | :13:51. | :14:00.
woman and stylist and she is pretty incredible! As a care leaver myself, | :14:01. | :14:09.
I know how important it is to give self-esteem and to make people feel | :14:10. | :14:12.
like we care. This incredible person is Ryan. He is going to be the chef | :14:13. | :14:22.
for the evening. When I was 14 I went into temporary foster care for | :14:23. | :14:26.
a weekend and it sort of turn into nearly five years. Christmas is | :14:27. | :14:29.
about family and not everyone is lucky enough to have one. The best | :14:30. | :14:35.
part of the day was sitting down and having a meal with everyone. | :14:36. | :14:38.
Messages from previous dinners showed just how much they need to | :14:39. | :14:43.
care leavers. Everyone looks happy. I would forget this day! Everything | :14:44. | :14:49.
was spot on. Amazed by it, amazed by everything. I hope they have one | :14:50. | :14:54.
next year as well! And that is totally the plan. Merry Christmas! | :14:55. | :15:16.
Just minutes after takeoff from Sochi, a Russian plane has gone down | :15:17. | :15:22.
with more than 90 people onboard. Merry Christmas to you as well. It | :15:23. | :15:42.
does not feel like Christmas with the sort of temperatures we have at | :15:43. | :15:46.
the moment. Well into double figures across many parts of the United | :15:47. | :15:50.
Kingdom. In Edinburgh for example we begin Christmas Day at 13 degrees. | :15:51. | :16:03.
The record is 15.6 degrees. We will keep on tracking that for you. We | :16:04. | :16:07.
must say there is a great deal of cloud around to begin the day and | :16:08. | :16:11.
that it delivers some outbreaks of rain across the north and western | :16:12. | :16:17.
parts of the UK. We see this weather front developing taking rain | :16:18. | :16:19.
southwards through Scotland and Northern Ireland on through the day. | :16:20. | :16:23.
So, yes. 15 degrees possible across parts of and north-east Scotland | :16:24. | :16:28.
that it will be a bit colder in the final later today and showers made | :16:29. | :16:33.
turned wintry over the tops of the hills after a mild day. Some may | :16:34. | :16:37.
still get a white Christmas. North-east England and Wales, | :16:38. | :16:40.
temperature could reach towards 15 degrees. Cloud running into a large | :16:41. | :16:46.
part of Wales in southern England with drizzly rain in time to time. | :16:47. | :16:50.
Overnight this is the more persistent band of rain pushing | :16:51. | :16:52.
southwards from Scotland and Northern Ireland across England and | :16:53. | :16:55.
love into resisting bowler behind it. That leaves increasingly to snow | :16:56. | :17:03.
across northern parts of Scotland on Boxing Day. Plus tree again today, | :17:04. | :17:08.
as the east of the Pennines. Strong winds tomorrow for Boxing Day across | :17:09. | :17:12.
north and Scotland Orkney and Shetland with the storm Konta. There | :17:13. | :17:19.
is an amber warning in force and we could see some dust at 18 miles or | :17:20. | :17:26.
possibly even more. Plenty of showers pushing through Scotland | :17:27. | :17:29.
police hills it will be wintry but elsewhere across the UK will see a | :17:30. | :17:34.
fair amount of dry sunny weather but notice that the temperatures have | :17:35. | :17:37.
dropped considerably from where they are today. From double figures to | :17:38. | :17:41.
single figure temperatures. I'm glad to say that once we get past Boxing | :17:42. | :17:46.
Day and into Tuesday onwards we will see some quieter weather and the | :17:47. | :17:49.
wind will begin to ease down as well. We will keep averages on the | :17:50. | :17:54.
single figures in a letter is a good trade-off to lose the strong winds. | :17:55. | :17:58.
A mild Christmas Day but hopefully we will have snow for some of the | :17:59. | :18:01.
northern hills of Scotland later today to give technically that white | :18:02. | :18:06.
Christmas for some of us. Technical is all we need. Absolutely. We will | :18:07. | :18:10.
talk about your Christmas dinner a little later on because you have | :18:11. | :18:14.
been busy this weekend but also you talked about mild weather. Would you | :18:15. | :18:20.
fancy camping in this weather? I always enjoy camping. It doesn't | :18:21. | :18:24.
even need to be mild. On Boxing Day as you start the day like this I | :18:25. | :18:28.
know what will be chilly but plenty of sunshine and a day to be | :18:29. | :18:32.
outdoors. I tell you what, someone else's going to completely agree | :18:33. | :18:35.
with you. You will be interested in this. | :18:36. | :18:37.
Our next guest has ditched the cosy and warm for a Christmas out | :18:38. | :18:40.
Phoebe Smith, is a wild camper and has woken up on Christmas Day | :18:41. | :18:48.
We can talk to her now. BV hello and Merry Christmas. You have even got | :18:49. | :19:01.
on festive lights on your tent. Where are you? I am in the South | :19:02. | :19:10.
Island, on top of a hill but I can attest to sudden gust of wind. How | :19:11. | :19:17.
has your night being? Nice fun. Christmas Eve is often a stressful | :19:18. | :19:24.
time for some getting last minute presence and suchlike but for me all | :19:25. | :19:29.
I had to was pictured tent. I set up the Christmas lights and I have had | :19:30. | :19:32.
a wonderful time. Will you be there all day today? Possibly not all day. | :19:33. | :19:40.
I will wait until it gets light and then go for a walk and then by the | :19:41. | :19:47.
time I'm ready to head indoors I will be ready for whatever food is | :19:48. | :19:54.
there. What you into wild camping? Someone like me am timid and the | :19:55. | :20:11.
sort of wild camping scares me. I was camping in the red Centre of | :20:12. | :20:14.
Australia where literally everything could kill you. And I thought I had | :20:15. | :20:19.
never done this in the UK. When I got back to the UK I was determined | :20:20. | :20:23.
to be a little more adventurous and that was over ten years ago now and | :20:24. | :20:29.
I have been a wild camp ever since. Coming quite an addict at sleeping | :20:30. | :20:34.
at extreme points and eating by myself. It's a hobby but it is fun. | :20:35. | :20:44.
How often do you do it? As often as I can. I try and do it as often as I | :20:45. | :20:50.
can run my full-time job and I write books to encourage other people to | :20:51. | :20:54.
fit in with their full-time job and just sort of have a little taste of | :20:55. | :20:58.
adventure because the feeling I have when I got back indoors, like I | :20:59. | :21:04.
said, after spending Christmas Eve outside, I will be so energetic. It | :21:05. | :21:11.
is like a miracle, you can flip the switch and get the kettle on all the | :21:12. | :21:15.
light on. On Christmas especially helps you realise that the best | :21:16. | :21:22.
things in life cannot be bought. I am glad you had a nice night. Enjoy | :21:23. | :21:25.
your walk later on. Merry Christmas. However you're celebrating today, | :21:26. | :21:32.
we want to know what's going to make it a really special | :21:33. | :21:35.
Christmas for you. We've been asking some people | :21:36. | :21:37.
in Manchester what's going to make I just retired and this is my first | :21:38. | :21:52.
Christmas enjoying everything at home. It is cold and in Australia it | :21:53. | :22:00.
is hot. Yes. We came over to spend it with and friends from Australia. | :22:01. | :22:05.
Our first Christmas with a new baby. It will be important to us. It will | :22:06. | :22:16.
be fantastic. My granddaughter was born on the second of August this | :22:17. | :22:20.
year. My son I helped to deliver her. It is the first Christmas with | :22:21. | :22:25.
my first grandchild ever so it is really special and I have gone | :22:26. | :22:26.
overboard. It is allowed, isn't it? So tell us why this Christmas | :22:27. | :22:30.
is going to be a really special You can e-mail us at | :22:31. | :22:34.
[email protected] or share your thoughts with other | :22:35. | :22:38.
viewers on our Facebook page. And you can Tweet about today's | :22:39. | :22:41.
stories using #bbcbreakfast or follow us for the latest | :22:42. | :22:44.
from the programme. Christmas is traditionally a time | :22:45. | :22:50.
for family and relaxation So if you're worried about it | :22:51. | :22:53.
all getting a bit too much, we've got a team of experts | :22:54. | :22:58.
here to guide you through the day. Here with me is agony aunt | :22:59. | :23:02.
Suzie Hayman and vet Cameron Muir. People will be wondering why we are | :23:03. | :23:11.
talking to veterinarian this morning because many people will understand | :23:12. | :23:19.
family stresses but how about pets? They can get distressed by all the | :23:20. | :23:23.
noise and hubbub. Strangers in the house can upset dogs and cats a lot. | :23:24. | :23:28.
People do not quite understand the psychology, particularly of cats, | :23:29. | :23:31.
they are sensitive to strangers in the house. Your house is their whole | :23:32. | :23:35.
universe and it can affect them quite a lot. Susie, how about the | :23:36. | :23:42.
family? Recently what you are doing is you are putting a lot of people | :23:43. | :23:46.
with strong opinions on strong personalities into one room and | :23:47. | :23:51.
almost saying to be cheerful today. Exactly. And sometimes it is people | :23:52. | :23:55.
you are not seems ages and there may be unfinished business there that | :23:56. | :23:58.
had been pushed under the carpet for a bit and all of a sudden it comes | :23:59. | :24:04.
as often you spend Christmas in that room, that one room altogether. | :24:05. | :24:07.
There is a strong feeling sometimes of how that is how it should be. Do | :24:08. | :24:13.
not let anybody go anywhere as. And that can bring conflict because | :24:14. | :24:18.
people can have too much drink and food and get stressed. In some ways | :24:19. | :24:23.
it is inevitable that you will spend a few days together, eat a lot, | :24:24. | :24:27.
drink a fair bit maybe. Some families. So what should they be | :24:28. | :24:31.
thinking about ahead of that? Or just right now. It is not too late | :24:32. | :24:38.
to think about it now and it is not inevitable. You can think very much | :24:39. | :24:45.
in terms of pacing. You don't have to eat and to recall that marches, | :24:46. | :24:49.
as much as you think. You don't have to stay together all the time. But | :24:50. | :24:54.
young people go to their own rooms, and be in contact on social media | :24:55. | :24:59.
with their own friends. And you yourself every now and then. The | :25:00. | :25:03.
bedroom and put your feet up. I think it is let people separating | :25:04. | :25:07.
come together. This is why I am in favour none sure you are with your | :25:08. | :25:12.
pets, getting up from walk no matter what the weather. We will go out on | :25:13. | :25:16.
the self this. That fresh air gets you out and breaks the walls. It | :25:17. | :25:20.
gets you outsider makes you feel better. And also, if you are with a | :25:21. | :25:24.
group you start talking to different people in different ways because you | :25:25. | :25:28.
are our walking. Cameron, people will be busy with Christmas Day so | :25:29. | :25:32.
it is almost easy to say that the pets will look after themselves. If | :25:33. | :25:38.
the idea of a walk or good one? It is good for both pets because they | :25:39. | :25:42.
go out and get normality. They need exercise of their body and for | :25:43. | :25:45.
physiology but it gives them bedtime. Taking a petrol walk is | :25:46. | :25:48.
important to their happiness. They do not like being trapped inside all | :25:49. | :25:52.
day. It is important that they get outside. And routines. It is | :25:53. | :25:58.
important for children and as an pets to have a routine. And so on | :25:59. | :26:04.
holidays, let the whole routine go because we will have fun. Actually, | :26:05. | :26:08.
keeping to a routine is a more important thing. It makes me feel | :26:09. | :26:12.
grounded and you know where you were and, actually, if Phil is quite safe | :26:13. | :26:16.
for children to know that it is bedtime, even on Christmas Day. To | :26:17. | :26:20.
treat? How much do you indulge? Susie, I am thinking that the | :26:21. | :26:26.
problem was indulging his you feel guilty afterwards and what that does | :26:27. | :26:30.
to your psyche. It is not good for you. And that is why we say it is | :26:31. | :26:35.
not inevitable that you will eat and drink too much. Like everything, | :26:36. | :26:37.
pasted throughout the day. Presents as well. I do like the idea of a big | :26:38. | :26:43.
launch it with a globe in everything because again an anti-climax when it | :26:44. | :26:47.
is all done. Most presents get lost. George and don't realise that | :26:48. | :26:50.
they've gotten some link is the go straight onto the next thing. I'm a | :26:51. | :26:54.
big fan stockings in the morning and then paste your presence through the | :26:55. | :26:58.
day right up until just before bedtime when you have able, maybe, | :26:59. | :27:01.
they didn't take it to bed. I think food and drink is the same. It is | :27:02. | :27:06.
important. If you are awake at this time you are probably on the coffee | :27:07. | :27:09.
to get his and doing all the things. Careful of the caffeine you have | :27:10. | :27:13.
throughout the day otherwise you will be hyperactive and careful of | :27:14. | :27:17.
the alcohol. Let us talk, Cameron, about how easy it is to indulge our | :27:18. | :27:21.
pets on Christmas. Because we are indulging. Efforts were considered | :27:22. | :27:25.
quite a lot of Christmas because there are many things that he should | :27:26. | :27:29.
not have. They should not have mince pies. Cake. What is poisonous about | :27:30. | :27:37.
an pies? Grapes and raisins. Quite poisonous to dogs. And it does not | :27:38. | :27:40.
matter how much they have. Chocolate. Yes. The fatty leftovers | :27:41. | :27:48.
that people are tempted to give to pets. That concerns us. It gives a | :27:49. | :27:53.
lot of upset stomachs and we fully expect to see a lot of vomiting dogs | :27:54. | :27:59.
on Wednesday because they have been given too many bones. No cooked | :28:00. | :28:03.
bones. They splintered and is bleak intestines. You may get away with it | :28:04. | :28:07.
once or twice but sooner or later you will be unlucky. You and I are | :28:08. | :28:13.
the same after Christmas. I have postbag that is huge and you have | :28:14. | :28:17.
the surgery that is full. Take it slowly and get through it. Thank you | :28:18. | :28:23.
very, very much. We will see later in the programme still to come | :28:24. | :28:24.
breakfast. If you've been missing the glitz | :28:25. | :28:28.
of Strictly already, have no fear as it's back tonight | :28:29. | :28:30.
for a Christmas special. Headlines are coming | :28:31. | :28:33.
up in just a moment. watching breakfast on Christmas | :28:34. | :29:40.
morning with me. The time is coming up to half past six. Let me bring | :29:41. | :29:44.
you an update on the main news this morning. A Russian military plane | :29:45. | :29:47.
has disappeared from radar just minutes after takeoff from the city | :29:48. | :29:51.
of Sochi. That is according to the defence Ministry. Russian news | :29:52. | :29:55.
agency says there were as many as 91 people on board, including eight | :29:56. | :30:03.
crew. Reports suggest that wreckage from the plane has been found in the | :30:04. | :30:07.
Black Sea. Inspiration is the theme of the Queen's Christmas broadcast | :30:08. | :30:11.
this year. She will speak of drawing strength from meeting ordinary | :30:12. | :30:14.
people who have done extraordinary things. The Queen is at her home in | :30:15. | :30:19.
Norfolk with other members of the Royal family. The Duke and Duchess | :30:20. | :30:23.
of Cambridge will spend the day with a Middleton family. | :30:24. | :30:25.
Britain's senior Anglican and Catholic archbishops | :30:26. | :30:27.
are addressing uncertainty in their Christmas sermons. | :30:28. | :30:29.
Later this morning, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin | :30:30. | :30:30.
Welby will talk about fear and division in the world as 2016 | :30:31. | :30:34.
Last night, Catholic leader Cardinal Vincent Nichols spoke | :30:35. | :30:37.
The American president-elect Donald Trump says he intends | :30:38. | :30:40.
to close his charitable foundation, to avoid any conflict of interest | :30:41. | :30:43.
The Trump Foundation is currently being investigated | :30:44. | :30:48.
by New York's attorney general, to establish whether it supported | :30:49. | :30:50.
a Republican political campaign in Florida in 2013. | :30:51. | :30:53.
Lynn Sweet is a journalist for the Chicago Sun Times. | :30:54. | :31:01.
At the bottom line here is that Donald Trump does not give any | :31:02. | :31:05.
He has not given any of his own money | :31:06. | :31:14.
between 2009 and 2014, so at the heart of this | :31:15. | :31:16.
is a foundation that goes to other people to ask for money. | :31:17. | :31:20.
Then there is another set of controversies and this | :31:21. | :31:23.
is what the attorney general in New York is looking at, | :31:24. | :31:26.
is whether or not there is self dealing. | :31:27. | :31:31.
You're not supposed to use a non-profit foundation | :31:32. | :31:35.
in the United States to make political contributions, | :31:36. | :31:37.
Thousands of people are being urged to leave their homes | :31:38. | :31:43.
in the Philippines as a super typhoon roars towards | :31:44. | :31:45.
Typhoon Nok-ten is expected to hit today, | :31:46. | :31:48.
Dozens of ports have been closed, as officials warn of potentially | :31:49. | :31:53.
The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has cut some | :31:54. | :32:04.
of his country's funding to United Nations agencies. | :32:05. | :32:06.
He's responding to Friday night's UN Security Council | :32:07. | :32:10.
resolution, demanding an end to settlement activities | :32:11. | :32:11.
in the occupied Palestinian territory. | :32:12. | :32:13.
He said the resolution was was biased and shameful. | :32:14. | :32:17.
Tributes have been paid to Status Quo's Rick Parfitt, | :32:18. | :32:20.
who's died in hospital in Spain at the age of 68. | :32:21. | :32:23.
The guitarist had suffered a series of health problems | :32:24. | :32:25.
The Queen guitarist Brian May said he had "truly joyfully | :32:26. | :32:34.
rocked our world", while Midge Ure said the news was "Dreadfully sad". | :32:35. | :32:41.
You might think that Father Christmas's preferred mode | :32:42. | :32:48.
of a transport is a sleigh pulled by Dasher, Dancer and Prancer, | :32:49. | :32:51.
et cetera, but yesterday in the American state | :32:52. | :32:53.
The man in red was accompanied by his trusty elves and reindeer. | :32:54. | :33:00.
Some, though, weren't quite as successful as others, | :33:01. | :33:02.
proving that four legs are sometimes better than two. | :33:03. | :33:08.
The Grinch was there, getting in on the action. | :33:09. | :33:12.
Christmas is a time for looking back as well as forward, | :33:13. | :33:19.
so we're looking for your photos from a Christmas past | :33:20. | :33:22.
This is the Ridpath family, from Yorkshire. | :33:23. | :33:33.
This is them in 1983 and here they are again a good few | :33:34. | :33:37.
This one has come from Debra Sherry-Brennan. | :33:38. | :33:42.
She doesn't say what year this is, or who she's with, | :33:43. | :33:45.
but they're looking just as lovely now as then. | :33:46. | :33:48.
Have you got any pictures like this? You can send your photos | :33:49. | :34:04.
to [email protected] and we'll try and show a few more later. | :34:05. | :34:09.
This year the Queen celebrated her 90th birthday. | :34:10. | :34:14.
Daniela Relph has been taking a look at that momentous occasion and other | :34:15. | :34:18.
It was the year of a big birthday. The queen at 90. -- Queen. Some of | :34:19. | :34:59.
her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had a trip to | :35:00. | :35:04.
Canada, the first overseas visit as a group of four. The Duke and at | :35:05. | :35:12.
this also went to India, a reminder of oil is passed. | :35:13. | :35:16.
And for Prince Harry, a new relationship highlighted | :35:17. | :35:18.
the tricky balance between a private and public life. | :35:19. | :35:20.
When you're the Queen, you get two birthdays. | :35:21. | :35:23.
April the 21st was the Queen's actual 90th birthday, | :35:24. | :35:33.
There was of course a cake, baked by Nadiya Hussain, | :35:34. | :35:40.
the winner of the Great British Bake Off. | :35:41. | :35:42.
And a meeting with fellow 90-year-olds. | :35:43. | :35:44.
I never really imagined that I'd meet her. | :35:45. | :35:49.
I never imagined I'd be 90, let's face it! | :35:50. | :35:53.
She was in the bombing of London, so was I. | :35:54. | :35:55.
And then she was called up, and so was I. | :35:56. | :36:05.
This was a birthday celebration, but also a public thank | :36:06. | :36:08.
In the evening, the Queen lit a beacon in Windsor Great Park, | :36:09. | :36:16.
and listened to a tribute from her son and heir. | :36:17. | :36:21.
I find it very hard to believe that you've reached your 90th year. | :36:22. | :36:34.
The beacon will also represent, as it lights other beacons | :36:35. | :36:37.
across the nation, the love and affection in which you are held | :36:38. | :36:40.
throughout this country and the Commonwealth. | :36:41. | :36:53.
Events here in Windsor were just the start. | :36:54. | :36:55.
Once the real birthday was over, attention moved to the official | :36:56. | :37:01.
They began with a national Service of Thanksgiving | :37:02. | :37:10.
It was also the Duke of Edinburgh's 95th birthday. | :37:11. | :37:14.
Next came Trooping the Colour, with a birthday twist. | :37:15. | :37:23.
Your Majesty, this year, on behalf of all ranks | :37:24. | :37:28.
of the Household Division and the King's Troop Royal Horse | :37:29. | :37:30.
Artillery, may I wish you and His Royal Highness the very | :37:31. | :37:33.
Your Majesty's Guards are ready to march off now. | :37:34. | :37:43.
And then an unmissable Queen with her family. | :37:44. | :37:46.
It was a first balcony appearance for Princess Charlotte. | :37:47. | :37:50.
And a scene-stealing turn from Prince George. | :37:51. | :37:52.
The British summer, though, can never be relied upon. | :37:53. | :37:59.
The following day, torrential rain for the Patrons Lunch. | :38:00. | :38:05.
An early peek out of a Palace window hadn't looked too promising. | :38:06. | :38:11.
Thousands came to the Mall for this street party, | :38:12. | :38:14.
representing the organisations of which the Queen is patron. | :38:15. | :38:19.
They paid ?150 each for the privilege of | :38:20. | :38:21.
Well, I think this is typically English, isn't it? | :38:22. | :38:26.
It's important to have a queue and some rain and a picnic | :38:27. | :38:29.
And everybody's very jolly, everybody is looking | :38:30. | :38:33.
We're out for the day, and we hope we can have a good day. | :38:34. | :38:39.
The atmosphere with everybody coming in, it's been lovely so far. | :38:40. | :38:43.
We're all here to sort of try and enjoy it together. | :38:44. | :38:50.
But when the Royal Family emerged from Buckingham Palace, | :38:51. | :38:52.
This perhaps the most comprehensive Royal walkabout ever seen. | :38:53. | :38:59.
Almost every senior Royal out on the Mall. | :39:00. | :39:05.
Then, at 90 and 95 years old, the most senior of them all. | :39:06. | :39:10.
And it was soon clear they were keen to get on with things. | :39:11. | :39:19.
A parade offered reminders of the Queen's reign, | :39:20. | :39:21.
including a model of the Royal yacht Britannia. | :39:22. | :39:28.
As the birthday celebrations drew to a close, the last word went | :39:29. | :39:31.
To everyone here today, and to those holding | :39:32. | :39:35.
street parties elsewhere, I would like to say thank | :39:36. | :39:37.
you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you continue | :39:38. | :39:40.
How I will feel if people are still singing happy | :39:41. | :39:47.
birthday in December remains to be seen! | :39:48. | :39:54.
There are, though, always those visitors who make | :39:55. | :39:58.
On their final trip to the UK as President and First Lady, | :39:59. | :40:09.
the Obamas popped in to wish the Queen a happy 90th. | :40:10. | :40:12.
They also had dinner and Kensington Palace with the Duke | :40:13. | :40:15.
and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, where there was | :40:16. | :40:17.
Back home in Washington, the President reflected on that | :40:18. | :40:27.
Last week, Prince George showed up to our meeting in his bath robe! | :40:28. | :40:33.
The 90th birthday saw a number of new photos | :40:34. | :40:54.
of the Queen, including these for a collection of stamps. | :40:55. | :40:59.
There were other family portraits - the Cambridges on a skiing | :41:00. | :41:05.
The first time the children had played in snow. | :41:06. | :41:10.
At the beginning of the year, Prince George started nursery - | :41:11. | :41:14.
a Montessori near the family's Norfolk home. | :41:15. | :41:16.
These photos were taken by his mother. | :41:17. | :41:20.
As were these - pictures to mark Princess Charlotte's | :41:21. | :41:22.
And new images were also released when Prince George | :41:23. | :41:30.
They included one with the family dog, Lupo. | :41:31. | :41:37.
It was the year where we saw a bit more of the younger Royals. | :41:38. | :41:41.
A first official overseas visit for Prince George | :41:42. | :41:43.
Their arrival in Canada appeared a bit bewildering | :41:44. | :41:51.
Not even the Canadian Prime Minister could persuade a tired | :41:52. | :41:55.
three-year-old to high-five, or even handshake. | :41:56. | :42:00.
In this bilingual country, where Prince William | :42:01. | :42:02.
will one day be King, there was a chance | :42:03. | :42:04.
Nous sommes tres heureux d?etre de retour au Canada. | :42:05. | :42:12.
Nous vous remercions d?etre venus en si grand nombre | :42:13. | :42:14.
The Canada trip took in some of the wild beauty of the country, | :42:15. | :42:26.
The couple heard of the struggle for equality still faced by some | :42:27. | :42:31.
There was, though, also time with their children. | :42:32. | :42:38.
For George and Charlotte, a party with all the trappings, | :42:39. | :42:41.
shared with military families at Government House in Victoria. | :42:42. | :42:46.
The entertainer who was balloon modelling seemed to spark | :42:47. | :42:48.
As the Duke and Duchess continue to protect the children's privacy, | :42:49. | :42:56.
it was a rare chance to see George and Charlotte in a more | :42:57. | :42:59.
For a trip to India earlier in the year, the children | :43:00. | :43:09.
Here, the Duke and Duchess saw the extremes of | :43:10. | :43:13.
life in modern India - from visits to the slum areas, | :43:14. | :43:16.
where they heard about the hardship of daily life, to the glamour | :43:17. | :43:19.
and glitz of Bollywood, and dinner with showbiz stars | :43:20. | :43:22.
A chance to exert the soft power of Royalty. | :43:23. | :43:31.
They also visited one of the most remote areas | :43:32. | :43:35.
of the Indian subcontinent, the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. | :43:36. | :43:37.
Here they met the King and Queen, a royal couple of similar age. | :43:38. | :43:43.
And hand-in-hand climbed 3000 feet to the Tiger's Nest, | :43:44. | :43:46.
Perhaps the most poignant image of the trip came | :43:47. | :44:03.
In February 1992, it was Diana, Princess of Wales, who sat alone, | :44:04. | :44:11.
seemingly forlorn at this monument to love. | :44:12. | :44:16.
Her marriage to Prince Charles was in crisis. | :44:17. | :44:18.
Not the best of associations for the son. | :44:19. | :44:21.
By 24 years later, the Duke and Duchess | :44:22. | :44:23.
So, what has the visit here today meant to you? | :44:24. | :44:30.
Although there was no mention of his mother, | :44:31. | :44:38.
it was the Duke's chance to create some happier memories here. | :44:39. | :44:43.
At home, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry | :44:44. | :44:46.
continued to focus much of their time on the subject | :44:47. | :44:49.
They say they want to change the national conversation, | :44:50. | :44:52.
and end the stigma that still surrounds the issue. | :44:53. | :44:58.
It is now at the centre of their charity work. | :44:59. | :45:01.
In May, they launched Heads Together - a partnership of different | :45:02. | :45:04.
charities all working to provide the best support possible. | :45:05. | :45:10.
A number of runners will take on next year's London Marathon | :45:11. | :45:13.
In a video to promote the work of the new partnership, the Royal | :45:14. | :45:18.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. | :45:19. | :45:27.
We can all play our part, by talking and listening to each | :45:28. | :45:32.
other and helping each other find support. | :45:33. | :45:37.
Let's get our heads together and change the conversation | :45:38. | :45:39.
It was also the subject that saw the Duke of Cambridge meet | :45:40. | :45:55.
members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender | :45:56. | :45:58.
community, brought together by the gay lifestyle magazine | :45:59. | :46:00.
A meeting that ended with the Duke being on the cover | :46:01. | :46:05.
In May, there was a rare insight into the Queen's personal opinion. | :46:06. | :46:14.
A wet garden party at Buckingham Palace, | :46:15. | :46:16.
and a conversation about the Chinese state visit a few months earlier. | :46:17. | :46:30.
After that response, there was further discussion. | :46:31. | :46:47.
The Queen's ability to usually stay out of the political fray publicly | :46:48. | :46:51.
But even she couldn't quite escape the intensity that surrounded the EU | :46:52. | :46:57.
An article in the Sun newspaper claimed, "Queen backs Brexit". | :46:58. | :47:04.
Buckingham Palace called the story spurious, and made a complaint | :47:05. | :47:09.
to the Independent Press Standards Organisation. | :47:10. | :47:12.
A few months later, after the vote to leave the EU, | :47:13. | :47:16.
the Queen was welcoming a new Prime Minister | :47:17. | :47:18.
Theresa May, the 13th Prime Minister of her reign. | :47:19. | :47:26.
The breathtaking beauty of the Giant's Causeway. | :47:27. | :47:30.
A trip to Northern Ireland was the Queen's first official | :47:31. | :47:33.
These were uncertain times, even for a monarchy that had reigned | :47:34. | :47:38.
But there were also reminders of past visits to Northern Ireland. | :47:39. | :47:45.
The Queen retraced a train journey she'd last done immediately | :47:46. | :47:47.
She also met politicians, and had this memorable exchange | :47:48. | :47:55.
with the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness. | :47:56. | :47:57.
There's a lot of things happening at the moment. | :47:58. | :48:12.
I've had two birthdays, so we've been quite busy. | :48:13. | :48:15.
From here at Clarence House, the Prince of Wales and Duchess | :48:16. | :48:18.
of Cornwall have continued to support or represent the Queen | :48:19. | :48:23.
Perhaps one of the most moving events of the year for the Prince - | :48:24. | :48:28.
his visit to Aberfan to remember those who died 50 years ago. | :48:29. | :48:32.
The cemetery high on the hillside, a constant reminder | :48:33. | :48:35.
of the devastation that hit Aberfan in 1966. | :48:36. | :48:41.
144 people died when coal waste slid down the mountainside, | :48:42. | :48:43.
Where classrooms had once stood, the Prince of Wales planted a tree. | :48:44. | :48:51.
No one should have to bear the losses you've suffered. | :48:52. | :49:00.
But no one could have borne those losses with greater | :49:01. | :49:08.
In Poundbury in Dorset, a family day out. | :49:09. | :49:19.
In October, the Prince of Wales took his mother and father | :49:20. | :49:24.
to see the development, his personal project | :49:25. | :49:26.
The tour included a rare sighting of the Queen in a supermarket. | :49:27. | :49:30.
Here, being shown around the local Waitrose. | :49:31. | :49:32.
There was also a trip to Oman, Bahrain and the United Arab | :49:33. | :49:36.
Emirates, aimed at strengthening relationships with the UK. | :49:37. | :49:38.
Helped along by a ceremonial sword dance in Oman. | :49:39. | :49:42.
The Duchess of Cornwall has continued her work on literacy. | :49:43. | :49:48.
This year, helping Radio 2's writing competition for children. | :49:49. | :49:52.
A visit to Chris Evans' Breakfast Show involved an encounter | :49:53. | :50:01.
She told him her Sunday nights hadn't been the same since the end | :50:02. | :50:07.
of The Night Manager, in which he starred. | :50:08. | :50:09.
She's also campaigned on the issue of domestic abuse. | :50:10. | :50:21.
At a Clarence House reception, she spoke of the anguish victims | :50:22. | :50:24.
face, describing it as a hidden problem where many remain too | :50:25. | :50:27.
It leaves women, children and men carrying a burden of shame. | :50:28. | :50:39.
It prevents some from speaking out about the abuse, | :50:40. | :50:43.
and it prevents them from getting help. | :50:44. | :50:46.
Prince Harry's visit to Nepal this year became an extended Royal tour. | :50:47. | :50:59.
He was due to be in the country for five days, but stayed on, | :51:00. | :51:03.
having seen the impact of the 2015 earthquake, in which 9,000 | :51:04. | :51:06.
He helped rebuild a school destroyed by the quake | :51:07. | :51:12.
Later in the year, a tour of the Caribbean saw | :51:13. | :51:23.
She's going to ask me all sorts of questions. | :51:24. | :51:28.
Here using Royal and celebrity status to raise | :51:29. | :51:33.
Both being tested to show how quick and straightforward | :51:34. | :51:39.
We just did it in the middle of Harold Square here in Barbados. | :51:40. | :51:45.
And we just want to show people how easy it is to get tested, | :51:46. | :51:49.
and how you shouldn't be afraid of knowing your status, | :51:50. | :51:52.
We should all be afraid of the stigma, and you should be | :51:53. | :51:58.
afraid of not knowing, you should be afraid | :51:59. | :52:00.
And we get it, there is a generational gap here. | :52:01. | :52:05.
The younger generation coming through want to talk about it, | :52:06. | :52:09.
So if us getting tested normalises it and makes a difference, | :52:10. | :52:14.
just even a small difference, then job well done. | :52:15. | :52:17.
The Invictus Games remain one of Prince Harry's real passions. | :52:18. | :52:24.
Even enlisting his granny in a bit of banter with some American rivals | :52:25. | :52:28.
Remember when you told us to bring it at the Invictus Games? | :52:29. | :52:44.
Held in Orlando this year, the sporting competition | :52:45. | :53:00.
for wounded, injured and sick service men and women. | :53:01. | :53:04.
Swimmer Elizabeth Marks won gold, but handed her medal | :53:05. | :53:07.
She asked him to give it to Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, | :53:08. | :53:13.
where she previously had a life-saving operation. | :53:14. | :53:16.
This is just a huge, huge thank you to all of you. | :53:17. | :53:20.
The following month, Prince Harry did as he was told, | :53:21. | :53:22.
handing the medal over to the staff from Papworth. | :53:23. | :53:26.
There was also a trip to Toronto, and a meeting | :53:27. | :53:30.
with the Canadian Prime Minister ahead of the next Invictus | :53:31. | :53:33.
Games, due to be held in the city in September. | :53:34. | :53:36.
It was to be an important visit for the Prince. | :53:37. | :53:41.
It's believed while here he met Meghan Markle, | :53:42. | :53:43.
an American actress working in Toronto filming | :53:44. | :53:46.
We're going to look at privacy and harassment law, let's see | :53:47. | :53:52.
if we can find a combination of cases to make an argument. | :53:53. | :53:55.
He's been in a relationship with Miss Markle for several months, | :53:56. | :53:59.
who, as well as her acting career, shares the Prince's | :54:00. | :54:02.
I am proud to be a woman, and a feminist. | :54:03. | :54:07.
But the media coverage of the relationship has angered | :54:08. | :54:11.
Harry, causing him to issue an unusual personal | :54:12. | :54:13.
Released on his behalf by Kensington Palace, | :54:14. | :54:20.
he said his girlfriend had been exposed to a wave of | :54:21. | :54:23.
It was a statement that immediately highlighted the seriousness | :54:24. | :54:40.
And Prince Harry's desire to do all he can to shield | :54:41. | :54:44.
Meghan Markle from the perils of being a royal girlfriend. | :54:45. | :54:49.
For a 95-year-old Duke of Edinburgh, there were still Royal | :54:50. | :54:52.
From opening a new bike factory, to visiting London's | :54:53. | :54:57.
new Design Museum, where he saw more than 100 of the most popular | :54:58. | :55:01.
everyday designs nominated by members of the public. | :55:02. | :55:04.
This was also the year that he celebrated the 60th | :55:05. | :55:08.
anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, including | :55:09. | :55:11.
60 years on, the awards are still about gaining new skills | :55:12. | :55:19.
At 95, the rigours of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme may be | :55:20. | :55:27.
a challenge, but not for some younger Royals. | :55:28. | :55:31.
To mark the 60th anniversary, the Countess of Wessex cycled 444 | :55:32. | :55:44.
miles from Edinburgh to London over seven days. | :55:45. | :55:49.
Her arrival at Buckingham Palace was much anticipated by her family - | :55:50. | :55:53.
her husband, the Earl of Wessex, and children, Louise and James, | :55:54. | :55:57.
who didn't want to let go of his mum after her efforts | :55:58. | :56:00.
I didn't think, oh, six months ago, before I thought I was probably | :56:01. | :56:08.
going to wobble my way across the end line there. | :56:09. | :56:10.
But if you told me that I'd feel like this after 6.5 days of cycling, | :56:11. | :56:16.
Looking ahead to next year, and the Queen will face | :56:17. | :56:22.
a common problem - a house refurbishment | :56:23. | :56:25.
The house in question is here, Buckingham Palace. | :56:26. | :56:30.
And the work is likely to cost the taxpayer about ?369 million. | :56:31. | :56:38.
On first impressions, it's a grand Royal palace, | :56:39. | :56:40.
home to the Queen, and the venue for glittering state occasions. | :56:41. | :56:43.
But Royal officials say that behind the scenes, | :56:44. | :56:47.
The wiring, the pipework and the boilers haven't been | :56:48. | :56:52.
They say the work is essential to avoid a catastrophe | :56:53. | :57:00.
at what they describe as a cherished national asset. | :57:01. | :57:03.
The work is due to start in April, and is scheduled to last | :57:04. | :57:06.
So much of the Queen's life has been lived publicly. | :57:07. | :57:16.
But a BBC documentary to mark her birthday | :57:17. | :57:18.
With her eldest son, she watched family films of her childhood, | :57:19. | :57:23.
and remembered a time before she was Queen. | :57:24. | :57:25.
Did you remember what that one was called? | :57:26. | :57:34.
Emptying them and putting everything back in again? | :57:35. | :57:45.
Well, hopefully some of it doesn't go back in again. | :57:46. | :57:50.
Next year, the Queen will welcome her sixth great-grandchild, | :57:51. | :58:14.
In 1947, Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten. | :58:15. | :58:18.
In 2017, as the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, they will celebrate | :58:19. | :58:21.
For the Queen, there are so many milestones to mark. | :58:22. | :58:32.
Personally, she may not have wanted too much fuss. | :58:33. | :58:35.
But 2016 was the year Britain celebrated its longest | :58:36. | :58:40.
This is Breakfast, with, me, Naga Munchetty. | :58:41. | :00:04.
A Russian military plane carrying more than 90 people has crashed | :00:05. | :00:07.
The aircraft went missing around 20 minutes after taking off from Sochi | :00:08. | :00:11.
Members of a military choir were among those onboard. | :00:12. | :00:28.
Good morning, it's Christmas Day, Sunday, 25th December. | :00:29. | :00:31.
The Queen will pay tribute to "ordinary people doing | :00:32. | :00:38.
extraordinary things" when she delivers her annual | :00:39. | :00:40.
The Archbishop of Westminster has spoken of the "anxiety | :00:41. | :00:47.
and uncertainty" felt by many in the world | :00:48. | :00:49.
as he gave his Christmas sermon during midnight mass. | :00:50. | :00:56.
As a child in care the poet Lemn Sissay used to dread Christmas. | :00:57. | :01:00.
We'll hear how he's now trying to make it a magical day for those | :01:01. | :01:04.
For a lot of care leavers the memory is about one. | :01:05. | :01:08.
-- a bad one of the Christmas before. | :01:09. | :01:11.
I've been to have a sneaky look at Strictly, as Matt Goss is the guest. | :01:12. | :01:25.
It doesn't feel much like Christmas, but it will turn colder today | :01:26. | :01:32.
Windy, and windier in the north. | :01:33. | :01:38.
A Russian military plane has disappeared from radar just minutes | :01:39. | :01:45.
Russian news agencies say there were as many as 91 people | :01:46. | :01:50.
onboard, 83 passengers and eight crew members. | :01:51. | :01:52.
Reports suggest that debris from the plane has been found | :01:53. | :01:55.
I'll get all the latest updates from our Moscow correspondent | :01:56. | :01:59.
The Queen has chosen 'inspiration' as the theme of her Christmas | :02:00. | :02:03.
broadcast this year, and will speak of drawing strength | :02:04. | :02:05.
from meeting ordinary people, who have done extraordinary things. | :02:06. | :02:08.
She will spend today at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk | :02:09. | :02:11.
with other members of the Royal Family. | :02:12. | :02:13.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will spend Christmas Day | :02:14. | :02:18.
with the Middleton family at their home in Berkshire. | :02:19. | :02:21.
Here's our royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell. | :02:22. | :02:27.
The Queen recorded this year's broadcast a few days ago | :02:28. | :02:29.
Its theme this year is inspiration and in the broadcast | :02:30. | :02:36.
she will reflect on the achievements of Olympic and Paralympic | :02:37. | :02:42.
athletes, from Britain and the Commonwealth, | :02:43. | :02:43.
many of whom she met at the Palace reception in October, | :02:44. | :02:46.
and whose achievements, she will say, are now inspiring others. | :02:47. | :02:49.
And in this year, when the Queen has marked her 90th birthday, | :02:50. | :02:52.
she will refer to the inspirational work of the many | :02:53. | :02:55.
charities with which she has been associated during her reign. | :02:56. | :02:58.
She will talk also of the work of the many | :02:59. | :03:00.
unsung heroes she meets around the country - | :03:01. | :03:03.
carers, community leaders and good neighbours. | :03:04. | :03:04.
"Ordinary people", as she puts it, doing "extraordinary" things. | :03:05. | :03:07.
The departure of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh | :03:08. | :03:09.
to Sandringham had to be delayed for 24 hours earlier in the week | :03:10. | :03:13.
because both were said to be suffering | :03:14. | :03:15.
Buckingham Palace has said nothing further about their health, but | :03:16. | :03:21.
there's no reason to think they won't be joining other members of | :03:22. | :03:24.
the family this moaning for the Christmas service at the estate. | :03:25. | :03:27.
There will be sadness at the news that Zara Tyndall has lost the baby | :03:28. | :03:30.
she was expecting with her husband, Mike, in the spring. | :03:31. | :03:33.
It would have been their second child. | :03:34. | :03:35.
Absent from Sandrigham this year will be the Duke and Duchess | :03:36. | :03:39.
of Cambridge and their two children, George and Charlotte. | :03:40. | :03:41.
In a break with tradition, they're having a family Christmas | :03:42. | :03:44.
in Berkshire, at the home of the Duchess's parents, | :03:45. | :03:47.
Let's speak now to our reporter Emilia Papadopoulos, | :03:48. | :03:51.
who is at Sandringham for us this morning. | :03:52. | :03:54.
Merry Christmas and good morning from Sandringham. The crowds have | :03:55. | :04:07.
already started gathering, briefing the wind of this very chilly | :04:08. | :04:13.
Christmas morning here in Norfolk. Many offcourse hoping to catch a | :04:14. | :04:16.
glimpse of the Queen and the royal family when they make their way to | :04:17. | :04:21.
the church for the traditional service. Before that surface of the | :04:22. | :04:26.
Queen will be coming here to St Mary Magdalene Church which is just | :04:27. | :04:29.
behind me, where she will receive communion privately. That's of | :04:30. | :04:35.
course if she is in good health, because she and the Duke of | :04:36. | :04:38.
Edinburgh to delay their trip up here earlier this week. But royal | :04:39. | :04:41.
watchers will definitely be hoping to see Her Majesty and other members | :04:42. | :04:45.
of the royal family. A bit of disappointment of cores that the | :04:46. | :04:49.
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge won't be here, as they are celebrating | :04:50. | :04:52.
Christmas with the Middleton family in Berkshire, with George and | :04:53. | :04:57.
Charlotte, at Prince Harry is expected to be here, along with | :04:58. | :05:01.
other members of the family. They arrived yesterday evening for the | :05:02. | :05:03.
traditional formal dinner on Christmas Eve, where they would have | :05:04. | :05:08.
exchanged cheap and cheerful gifts, a tradition that's been going on in | :05:09. | :05:12.
the royal family for years. This morning they will wake up, have | :05:13. | :05:16.
breakfast, had the church and go back for Christmas lunch, settle | :05:17. | :05:20.
down to watch the Queen's Speech with the other families around the | :05:21. | :05:23.
country this morning. Indeed. They give very much. -- thank you. | :05:24. | :05:30.
We can return now to the Russian military plane that has gone missing | :05:31. | :05:34.
Let's speak to our Moscow correspondent, Steve Rosenberg. | :05:35. | :05:37.
Good morning. Terrible news to wake up to? Absolutely. This is what we | :05:38. | :05:47.
know so far. The jet, which belonged to the Russian defence ministry, | :05:48. | :05:50.
took off early this morning from Sochi airport in southern Russia, | :05:51. | :05:56.
down for the Russian air base in Syria. About 20 minutes after | :05:57. | :05:59.
takeoff it disappeared from radar screens. Later the defence ministry | :06:00. | :06:04.
reported that it had crashed into the Black Sea. A search operation | :06:05. | :06:09.
was launched and we believe that fragments of the plane have now been | :06:10. | :06:12.
discovered about one mile off the coast. As regards who was onboard, | :06:13. | :06:19.
we think there were at least 91 people onboard the plane, including | :06:20. | :06:24.
members of the Royal famous Russian dance ensemble. They were due to | :06:25. | :06:30.
give a new years concert for Russian servicemen in Syria. There were also | :06:31. | :06:36.
a number of Russian journalists on the plane and some military | :06:37. | :06:42.
officials. Thanks very much for the update. That was our correspondent, | :06:43. | :06:47.
Steve Rosenberg, in Moscow, with the latest about the plane that has | :06:48. | :06:51.
crashed into the Black Sea, after leaving for -- from Sochi. | :06:52. | :06:55.
Britain's senior Anglican and Catholic archbishops | :06:56. | :06:56.
are addressing uncertainty in their Christmas sermons. | :06:57. | :06:58.
Later this morning, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will talk | :06:59. | :07:01.
about fear and division in the world as 2016 draws to a close. | :07:02. | :07:04.
Last night, the leader of Britain's Catholics spoke | :07:05. | :07:06.
Here's our religious affairs correspondent Martin Bashir. | :07:07. | :07:14.
A traditional start to Christmas and a solemn midnight mass | :07:15. | :07:17.
Cardinal Vincent Nichols began his sermon by quoting the poet | :07:18. | :07:27.
WB Yeats, referring to a turbulent year, with many fearing that things | :07:28. | :07:34.
may fall apart, that the centre can't hold. | :07:35. | :07:39.
The last six months in particular has seen widespread anxiety | :07:40. | :07:46.
and uncertainty at many levels, at life in this country and in those | :07:47. | :07:49.
major partnerships and neighbours that we have. | :07:50. | :07:51.
So with Europe, with America, with the Middle East, | :07:52. | :07:54.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who, like last year, | :07:55. | :08:06.
will deliver his Christmas message later this morning, | :08:07. | :08:14.
will also address the division and uncertainty that's | :08:15. | :08:16.
Cardinal Nichols said the answer to our insecurity was neither | :08:17. | :08:20.
materialism nor the pursuit of selfish interest, | :08:21. | :08:21.
but rather a renewed focus on the life of Christ. | :08:22. | :08:29.
Cardinal Nichols concluded his midnight sermon by emphasising | :08:30. | :08:35.
the fact of Christ's birth, which he said was marked in time, | :08:36. | :08:39.
recorded in the Gospels and celebrated today. | :08:40. | :08:47.
The American president-elect Donald Trump says he intends | :08:48. | :08:51.
to close his charitable foundation to avoid any conflict of interest | :08:52. | :08:54.
The Trump Foundation is currently being investigated | :08:55. | :08:59.
by New York's attorney general, to establish whether it supported | :09:00. | :09:02.
a Republican political campaign in Florida in 2013. | :09:03. | :09:04.
The bottom line here is that Donald Trump does not give | :09:05. | :09:13.
He has not given any of his own money between 2009 | :09:14. | :09:19.
and 2014, so at the heart of this is a foundation that goes to other | :09:20. | :09:23.
Then there is another set of controversies, | :09:24. | :09:29.
and this is what the attorney general in New York is looking at, | :09:30. | :09:33.
is whether or not there is self dealing. | :09:34. | :09:35.
You're not supposed to use a non-profit foundation | :09:36. | :09:37.
in the United States to make political contributions, | :09:38. | :09:39.
Staff in hospital in Albuquerque have been making the most of special | :09:40. | :09:53.
deliveries this Christmas. Newborn babies have been keeping | :09:54. | :09:56.
warm inside stockings. It's become something of a tradition | :09:57. | :09:58.
and volunteers say that some parents still have their stockings, | :09:59. | :10:01.
even though their children Although look at this little one - | :10:02. | :10:03.
not everyone was impressed Christmas is a time for family, | :10:04. | :10:13.
but if you don't have one The poet Lemn Sissay knows | :10:14. | :10:17.
exactly how that feels. He was fostered as a baby | :10:18. | :10:23.
and when he turned 12 his foster He spent the next five years | :10:24. | :10:27.
in and out of children's homes. That's why each year he organises | :10:28. | :10:31.
special Christmas dinners for young Breakfast's Jayne McCubbin went | :10:32. | :10:35.
to meet him as he prepared for one Not everyone has | :10:36. | :10:39.
someone at Christmas. If I visited a friend's house, | :10:40. | :10:44.
I often felt I was the boy with no family who was going to visit | :10:45. | :11:13.
families, you know? Here in Hackney he is getting ready | :11:14. | :11:15.
for one of his Care Leaver's Christmas dinners, a project that | :11:16. | :11:25.
has grown from one city to five All of the gifts here have been | :11:26. | :11:28.
donated by strangers and the parties Do we really not know | :11:29. | :11:33.
the words to Jingle Bells? The only reason we do the Christmas | :11:34. | :11:37.
dinner is so that those young care leavers go away with a memory | :11:38. | :11:43.
that they can look onto next year. That's all Christmas is, | :11:44. | :11:47.
it's the making of a memory So we all come around | :11:48. | :11:50.
the Christmas dinner table and we all remembe, "We did this | :11:51. | :12:02.
last year and it was incredible". For a lot of care leavers, | :12:03. | :12:09.
the memory was a bad one This is his passion and for the team | :12:10. | :12:13.
that passion is infectious. This is Amanda, who is | :12:14. | :12:18.
sorting everybody out. We have 20 volunteers, | :12:19. | :12:20.
60 young people on four -- four hairstylists, artists, | :12:21. | :12:24.
musicians, social workers coming down to do a really | :12:25. | :12:31.
amazing Christmas This is Sabrina, who is the hair | :12:32. | :12:32.
woman and stylist and she is pretty As a care leaver myself, | :12:33. | :12:45.
I know how important it is to give self-esteem and to feel | :12:46. | :12:53.
like people care. Ryan is going to be | :12:54. | :12:56.
the chef for the evening. When I was 14, I went into temporary | :12:57. | :13:04.
foster care for a weekend and it Christmas is about family and not | :13:05. | :13:08.
everyone is lucky enough The best part of the day | :13:09. | :13:14.
was sitting down and having Messages from previous dinners show | :13:15. | :13:20.
just how much they mean I hope they have one | :13:21. | :13:28.
next year as well! A lovely way to spend Christmas Day. | :13:29. | :13:51.
A lot of it is all about the food. I am sure many of you are thinking | :13:52. | :13:55.
about putting the turkey in the oven and getting your Christmas dinner | :13:56. | :13:58.
ready for your loved ones. Someone who has been very organised is Nick, | :13:59. | :14:05.
our weather man. Take a look at what he has been cooking already. He has | :14:06. | :14:14.
made a Christmas pie, a jule log, he has been telling us all about his | :14:15. | :14:18.
great culinary exploits. That's not a good way to make anyone feel good! | :14:19. | :14:24.
You are making me feel hungry again! I have to say there's not a huge | :14:25. | :14:28.
amount of that left. I could have been bragging even more when I was | :14:29. | :14:34.
tweeting that. I had the ice cream cake bomb as well, but that's | :14:35. | :14:39.
basically gone already. I only like Christmas for the desert! | :14:40. | :14:44.
Is there no end to your talents? And now you are going to spectacularly | :14:45. | :14:47.
present the weather! It is very mild this year. It is. If | :14:48. | :14:52.
you have made that ice cream desert, it might melt quicker than you | :14:53. | :14:56.
expected it to, because it isn't feeling very festive at the moment. | :14:57. | :15:00.
These are some of the latest temperatures. 13.3 I noticed in | :15:01. | :15:09.
these areas. We will brace to get the highest temperature on Christmas | :15:10. | :15:15.
Day on record, that's 15.6, and we might see that in north-east | :15:16. | :15:18.
Scotland. We will monitor that through the day. It is all because | :15:19. | :15:21.
we have this mild air between weather fronts at the moment. | :15:22. | :15:25.
There's a cold front waiting to come through and later today you will | :15:26. | :15:28.
notice it turning colder in Northern Ireland and Scotland. But until then | :15:29. | :15:33.
it's a mild start. Plenty of cloud. It is a blustery day. That cloud is | :15:34. | :15:38.
delivering Wayne the western Scotland. -- rain. The east of high | :15:39. | :15:44.
ground we might have brightness. North-east England, Northey | :15:45. | :15:48.
Scotland, north-east Wales. But behind the rain, this is the cold | :15:49. | :15:53.
front moving south, some wet weather for you. Behind that it turns | :15:54. | :15:57.
clearer and colder to end the day. It is windy. Gusty wind to the east | :15:58. | :16:03.
the Pennines, up to 60 mph. But you will see sunshine. It could get | :16:04. | :16:11.
close to the record in parts. Windy, patchy rain and drizzle in the | :16:12. | :16:14.
south-west of England occasionally. Cloud elsewhere, in the Midlands, | :16:15. | :16:19.
the south-east. Tonight the band of rain pushes south for England and | :16:20. | :16:24.
Wales. Clearer air following on. Showers rattling through Scotland | :16:25. | :16:27.
and Northern Ireland and they built on increasingly wintry in northern | :16:28. | :16:31.
Scotland on the hills. I the end of Christmas Day you could see | :16:32. | :16:34.
something wintry. Greater interest is the strengthening wind tonight | :16:35. | :16:43.
and tomorrow, courtesy of Storm Connor. There is an amber warning | :16:44. | :16:46.
enforced and we could get in excess of 80 mph. More showers in Scotland | :16:47. | :16:52.
tomorrow, driven on by the strong wind. Elsewhere, a blustery picture, | :16:53. | :16:57.
but away from Scotland a lot of dry weather. You get to see some | :16:58. | :17:00.
sunshine. There will be a bite to the wind because it will be a cold | :17:01. | :17:05.
day, but a fine day if you wrap up and head out for the Boxing Day | :17:06. | :17:09.
warmth because some of us have to walk off a bit of cake! | :17:10. | :17:48.
Now, if you're already missing the excitement this year's | :17:49. | :17:51.
Strictly Come Dancing had to offer, I've got some good news for you. | :17:52. | :17:54.
Later today, there'll be a Strictly Christmas special, | :17:55. | :17:57.
where dancers past and present will tango, jive and cha-cha it out, | :17:58. | :18:00.
to get another chance of winning that coveted Glitterball trophy. | :18:01. | :18:03.
I went behind the scenes to take a look at what gives the Christmas | :18:04. | :18:07.
episode that fabulous magic and sparkle. | :18:08. | :18:08.
Will go to the studios that are home to strictly come dancing. This | :18:09. | :18:13.
Jewish is where magic happens. It has been a number year of sparkles. | :18:14. | :18:17.
And last year Ore became champion of the dance floor. It was an emotional | :18:18. | :18:23.
end to the series as the grandfather of Strictly bid an emotional | :18:24. | :18:26.
farewell after leading the judging panel since the programme started 12 | :18:27. | :18:33.
years ago. But he is back for one last time with six former contestant | :18:34. | :18:38.
taking to the stage for a Christmas feast that will not disappoint. What | :18:39. | :18:43.
does it take to put a festive bonanza of a show like this | :18:44. | :18:48.
together? Behind-the-scenes at Strictly. All these fantastic | :18:49. | :18:51.
costumes. Jinnah how much work goes into this? I could tell you but I am | :18:52. | :18:55.
not the right person. This is where it all happens. Jane! How are you? | :18:56. | :19:02.
The Christmas show is a Christmas themed. We have Love actually, home | :19:03. | :19:12.
alone. We have Frozen. Is there more glitter or snow? A bit of both. We | :19:13. | :19:17.
endeavour to make everything sparkle and Christmas like. Taking part in | :19:18. | :19:26.
this year's series through me out of my comfort zone completely. It was | :19:27. | :19:30.
totally different to anything I had ever done before. Hull I loved every | :19:31. | :19:35.
minute of it. And coming back to the studio, well, it was like I had | :19:36. | :19:39.
never been away. Bumping into familiar faces, catching up with old | :19:40. | :19:43.
friends. And how wide this year's competitors finding it? You don't | :19:44. | :19:51.
forget. This is Breakfast, isn't it? It is kind of like giving birth. You | :19:52. | :19:56.
remember the good bits and not the scary bits. My friends and family | :19:57. | :20:00.
come to me for Christmas and we always watch Strictly but my mother | :20:01. | :20:06.
has been on social media and she has been away so she does not know I am | :20:07. | :20:11.
doing this. What kind of dams will you do today? The Charleston. A song | :20:12. | :20:19.
from the musical Elf. I am still working on my Shuffle. Oh, he has | :20:20. | :20:28.
got it! My Charleston is not... I have yields on. Tell us about the | :20:29. | :20:33.
outfit because your theme is Frozen. The ice Queen. You why else? And | :20:34. | :20:40.
where is the handsome prince? I don't know. This man is so popular. | :20:41. | :20:49.
They love him. A pink bow tie. This is what happens. It is a privilege, | :20:50. | :20:58.
really. It is a privilege for me! I still had backstage privileges and | :20:59. | :21:05.
managed to sneak into a change room ahead of his performance on the | :21:06. | :21:10.
show. I will sing White Christmas. There is an excitement and a buzz. | :21:11. | :21:17.
They go to town. It is still one of those television shows where they | :21:18. | :21:21.
throw everything at it and I have been here a few times now and I am | :21:22. | :21:25.
always amazed that the sets and the amount of detail that goes into the | :21:26. | :21:31.
sets. In the meantime, Merry Christmas from everyone on the damp | :21:32. | :21:38.
floor. Merry Christmas! Have a wonderful, brilliant Christmas Day. | :21:39. | :21:44.
We hope you get all the wonderful joyful family fun and presence and | :21:45. | :21:48.
Christmas cheer. Everything. All of it. | :21:49. | :21:48.
You can catch the Strictly Christmas Special later today on BBC One, | :21:49. | :21:53.
Many of us will be settling in for a day of presents, | :21:54. | :22:07.
food and drink with family, but its thought that over 900,000 | :22:08. | :22:10.
Rob Harland is a zookeeper at London Zoo, where the animals | :22:11. | :22:14.
don't stop needing looking after | :22:15. | :22:16.
just because it's Christmas Day. | :22:17. | :22:17.
You with that? I am hearing the panic here at the zoo and we are | :22:18. | :22:27.
here with our pygmy goats and one of our sheep as well. Giving them some | :22:28. | :22:32.
breakfast this morning. Did you getting? What time? Just before | :22:33. | :22:38.
seven a.m. But I have been awake since five a.m. Because I had to | :22:39. | :22:44.
drive in. It is not a bad job with such lovely creatures like that | :22:45. | :22:48.
behind you is it? It is always fascinating, the work here. It is a | :22:49. | :22:52.
pleasure, even coming in on Christmas Day. And today you have | :22:53. | :22:59.
been, you do not live too far from the zoo and people still have to | :23:00. | :23:03.
come in, the pet animals still need feeding. How many people will come | :23:04. | :23:10.
in? A normal quota of keepers in. Probably about 30 of us, maybe a few | :23:11. | :23:14.
more on Christmas Day. It is business as usual. We do our | :23:15. | :23:18.
cleaning and feeding and then we have keepers coming in in the | :23:19. | :23:22.
afternoon. The only difference is that there is no public in today. It | :23:23. | :23:28.
is lovely to see you. Thank you for taking the time. Enjoy the animals | :23:29. | :23:47.
and your Christmas day. Don't forget the people working in hospitals. We | :23:48. | :23:51.
have had an e-mail from one woman who says her daughter is in labour | :23:52. | :23:59.
at the moment. That baby is on its way. Keep us updated because it | :24:00. | :24:04.
would be lovely to hear how that baby is doing. Who better to talk to | :24:05. | :24:11.
now than a midwife. Dealing with women just like the daughter of | :24:12. | :24:12.
Carol Smith. Justine Ladds is a midwife | :24:13. | :24:13.
at West Suffolk Hospital. You have a new arrival! Tell us all | :24:14. | :24:25.
about it. This is baby Cody. He was born at five a.m. . He was our | :24:26. | :24:32.
second baby. The first was born one in the morning. A he weighs 811. And | :24:33. | :24:45.
he is already in a Santa outfit. This is just another day in the | :24:46. | :24:50.
office for you, isn't it? It is but everyone has been great. I work with | :24:51. | :24:58.
a lovely team here and it has been a lovely festive atmosphere here. You | :24:59. | :25:05.
mentioned another baby delivered just after midnight. To that mother | :25:06. | :25:10.
wants a Christmas baby? I don't think either of them really did. | :25:11. | :25:14.
They were happy when they did come, however, because it is a nice | :25:15. | :25:18.
atmosphere and it is special to have a baby on Christmas Day. You have | :25:19. | :25:23.
done the overnight shift and you are coming off your shift now. How are | :25:24. | :25:27.
you going to be spending Christmas Day? I am going home. Spend the day | :25:28. | :25:35.
with my husband and children and my parents. My husband will be | :25:36. | :25:38.
preparing Christmas dinner now as we speak, I would imagine. I think you | :25:39. | :25:44.
have the perfect excuse to snooze at any point you like today over | :25:45. | :25:48.
Christmas dinner and be waited on hand and foot. Enjoy the family and | :25:49. | :25:51.
thank you for taking the time to talk to us. | :25:52. | :25:55.
Not only is it Christmas morning but it is also the first full day | :25:56. | :25:59.
While both holidays are meant to be a time to see family and friends, | :26:00. | :26:04.
sometimes these get-togethers can be a source of tension and stress. | :26:05. | :26:07.
If you're worried about it all getting a bit too much, | :26:08. | :26:10.
we've got a team of experts here to guide you through the day. | :26:11. | :26:14.
Here with me are Reverend Sally Hitchiner and Rabbi Benjy Rickman. | :26:15. | :26:19.
Good morning to you both. Merry Christmas. Happy about. It is | :26:20. | :26:26.
unusual, quite rare, isn't it, for the first day of to fall on | :26:27. | :26:30.
Christmas Day? Jewish festivals work on a lunar calendar. It is nice not | :26:31. | :26:37.
having to juggle going to work and having a festival. A bonus this year | :26:38. | :26:44.
to coincide. Or the holiday tie up together. How were you celebrate | :26:45. | :26:47.
today? Last night was the first night of Hanukkah and we gathered | :26:48. | :26:50.
together with the family. We later candle each night to the responding | :26:51. | :26:55.
to the miracle of the Hanukkah story and Jewish tradition is quite | :26:56. | :27:04.
creative. Food is a massive part of every festival. Despite lighting | :27:05. | :27:06.
candles and synagogue services we have a lot of yummy food and ended | :27:07. | :27:10.
as a festival that sell bread the miracle with oil. The oil they found | :27:11. | :27:16.
could have burned for one day but it burned 48. So fried food. The most | :27:17. | :27:21.
unhealthy of all of our festivals. Anything fried it reminds us of that | :27:22. | :27:25.
particular part of the story. Family gatherings and celebrations. It is a | :27:26. | :27:30.
time to not only focus on the gastronomic side of it to but to | :27:31. | :27:35.
remember that the festival is about light and thinking about the light | :27:36. | :27:38.
you can spread through the world. We like -- light a candle and place it | :27:39. | :27:51.
in the window. It can be a source of tension, this time of year. Perhaps | :27:52. | :27:55.
we should take moments today to pause and remember what we do have. | :27:56. | :28:01.
Absolutely. Someone tweeted to me yesterday that we spend so much time | :28:02. | :28:05.
preparing for Christmas but Christmas has been prepared for us. | :28:06. | :28:10.
We just need to be quiet and so we can listen and hear the angels sing. | :28:11. | :28:13.
Moments of spirituality where we have a minute to be calm and | :28:14. | :28:21.
appreciate what we have. So often we spend our time running around and | :28:22. | :28:23.
preparing everything and wrapping presents and running from pillar to | :28:24. | :28:27.
post trying to make sure everyone is having the best time possible. Just | :28:28. | :28:30.
take a step back from the pressure and that can make a real difference | :28:31. | :28:34.
whether that be going to Churchill synagogue or doing something within | :28:35. | :28:38.
the holiday that gives us a sense of perspective and a deeper meaning | :28:39. | :28:43.
behind that, whatever that is. Benji mentioned what he would eat for | :28:44. | :28:47.
Christmas, what is your day involved? I am going to be helping | :28:48. | :28:53.
at the St Mary 's homily at 11 o'clock and many people throughout | :28:54. | :28:58.
the country, actually, a going to Christmas services. Many people went | :28:59. | :29:01.
last night that the midnight mass. That is more popular than ever. Many | :29:02. | :29:14.
people I know love a Christmas Carol and I think it is something about | :29:15. | :29:18.
the carols, summing about the candle at the Magic and the sense of | :29:19. | :29:23.
perspective and maybe even the Christmas story, a new baby being | :29:24. | :29:27.
born, the sense of hope that is in a Christmas story that even people who | :29:28. | :29:31.
are not really buying into the whole of religion love that story and the | :29:32. | :29:35.
nativity play with the little children doing Mary and Joseph and | :29:36. | :29:41.
there is something I think about the Christmas story that cuts through | :29:42. | :29:46.
all of the perfect family sort of John Lewis ad, those of the things | :29:47. | :29:49.
that we put pressure on ourselves for this time of year. Mary and | :29:50. | :29:53.
Joseph were harder. They had relation ship problems. They were in | :29:54. | :30:00.
a stable. The first Christmas family had that. Your message to your | :30:01. | :30:09.
community today? It is important today that the Jewish community does | :30:10. | :30:13.
not get overwhelmed with Christmas. Have our own traditions and perhaps | :30:14. | :30:18.
coming together this year reminds us that diversity down here speaks of | :30:19. | :30:23.
unity in God. It is OK to be proud of our tradition. We do not need to | :30:24. | :30:28.
copy other faith communities. We need to look inside as to what out | :30:29. | :30:33.
these things in the beauty of our traditions. Be proud to be Jewish. | :30:34. | :30:39.
Place candles in the window. Hanukkah candles in the home and be | :30:40. | :30:43.
proud of who we are. Recognise the diversity and that makes us richer | :30:44. | :30:47.
and gives us a more meaningful experience in this world. Merry | :30:48. | :30:51.
Christmas and happy Hanukkah. Enjoy your day. Whatever you do today I | :30:52. | :30:55.
hope you enjoy your day as well. I will be back with headlines in a few | :30:56. | :30:58.
moments. Hello, this is Breakfast | :30:59. | :31:36.

which means you couldn't Cancel the kitchen scraps | :36:31. | :36:32.

that's how Leonardo painted her. We thought we were in | :36:48. | :37:20.
a dream, you know? Because we had done nothing | :37:21. | :37:22.
in particular, and we both said, well, he said you're women, | :37:23. | :37:25.
right about two women And we said, OK, we | :37:26. | :37:28.
could do flat sharing. You think I'll tell you how Robert | :37:29. | :37:37.

you think I'll tell you how he's asked me to spend | :37:41. | :37:46.
the night with him. I knew you'd drag it | :37:47. | :37:48.

# There's nothing you can do that can't be done... | :56:06. | :56:21.
# Nothing you can sing that can't be sung. | :56:22. | :56:25.
We celebrate with it, and we mourn with it. | :56:26. | :56:48.
I need music, and I don't mean just professionally. | :56:49. | :56:55.
I think you will find to some extent, pretty well | :56:56. | :56:59.
Bill Haley had arrived, and of course that was | :57:00. | :57:10.
But fortunately in the meantime, I had done two weeks in | :57:11. | :57:18.
I wasn't everybody's choice to be on Radio 1, because | :57:19. | :57:28.
there was the question of whether I would fit into all this. | :57:29. | :57:32.
So I had a three month contract, simple as that. | :57:33. | :57:34.
On the Jimmy Young programme today... | :57:35. | :57:55.
Hello and welcome to the beginning of what I hope will be a long and | :57:56. | :58:02.
How anyone can get such applause and still stay as | :58:03. | :58:07.
I mean, I didn't mind if being famous was | :58:08. | :58:19.
Have a pencil and paper handy, and your brain in gear. | :58:20. | :58:33.
CHEERING . | :58:34. | :58:48.
Welcome to the millions of you watching, to the performers | :58:49. | :58:50.
from 25 countries waiting nervously backstage. | :58:51. | :58:55.
We have a running total going on now. | :58:56. | :59:04.
We have been open for one hour and it's a | :59:05. | :59:07.
One hour, and we have about 1.5 million to raise to do better than | :59:08. | :59:24.
# Fiddle, cello, big bass drum, bassoon, flute | :59:25. | :59:35.
# Each one making the most of his chance | :59:36. | :59:39.
This is Breakfast with Naga Munchetty. | :59:40. | :00:28.
A Russian military plane carrying more than 90 people has | :00:29. | :00:31.
The aircraft went missing around 20 minutes after taking off from Sochi | :00:32. | :00:37.
Members of a military choir were among those onboard. | :00:38. | :00:57.
The Queen will pay tribute to "ordinary people doing | :00:58. | :01:08.
extraordinary things", when she delivers her | :01:09. | :01:09.
The Archbishop Of Westminster has spoken of the "anxiety | :01:10. | :01:16.
and uncertainty" felt by many in the world as he gave | :01:17. | :01:21.
his Christmas sermon during midnight mass. | :01:22. | :01:23.
As a child in care, the poet Lemn Sissay used to dread Christmas. | :01:24. | :01:26.
We'll hear how he's now trying to make it a magical day for those | :01:27. | :01:29.
For a lot of care leavers, the memory is a bad one | :01:30. | :01:37.
Matt Goss is among the guests on the Strictly Christmas Special tonight. | :01:38. | :01:43.
I've been to take a sneak peek behind the scenes. | :01:44. | :01:46.
Good morning, a merry mild Christmas. It doesn't feel much like | :01:47. | :01:59.
Christmas but it will turn colder later today from the north. | :02:00. | :02:04.
Windy tomorrow in northern Scotland. The full Christmas forecast on the | :02:05. | :02:05.
way. A Russian military plane has crashed | :02:06. | :02:08.
into the Black Sea just minutes The Russian Defence Ministry said | :02:09. | :02:22.
there were at least 92 people on board. | :02:23. | :02:25.
Reports suggest that the plane was travelling to Syria and that | :02:26. | :02:28.
debris has been found in the Black Sea. | :02:29. | :02:31.
An investigation has been launched. We will tell you more about those on | :02:32. | :02:40.
the plane, details coming through. Some reporters and military | :02:41. | :02:44.
personnel were on board as well as crew, and a military choir on its | :02:45. | :02:48.
way to performing at a concert for members of the Russian Armed Forces | :02:49. | :02:56.
in Syria. We will get an update from our Moscow correspondent in a | :02:57. | :02:57.
minutes. The Queen has chosen "inspiration" | :02:58. | :03:00.
as the theme of her Christmas broadcast this year, | :03:01. | :03:03.
and will speak of drawing strength from meeting ordinary people, | :03:04. | :03:05.
who have done extraordinary things. She will spend today | :03:06. | :03:07.
at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk with other members | :03:08. | :03:09.
of the royal family. The Duke and Duchess Of Cambridge | :03:10. | :03:11.
will spend Christmas Day with the Middleton family | :03:12. | :03:14.
at their home in Berkshire. Here's our royal correspondent | :03:15. | :03:16.
Nicholas Witchell. The Queen recorded this year's | :03:17. | :03:21.
broadcast a few days ago Its theme this year is inspiration | :03:22. | :03:23.
and, in the broadcast, she will reflect on the achievements | :03:24. | :03:33.
of Olympic and Paralympic athletes from Britain and the Commonwealth, | :03:34. | :03:37.
many of whom she met at the Palace reception in October, and whose | :03:38. | :03:40.
achievements, she will say, And in this year, when the Queen has | :03:41. | :03:42.
marked her 90th birthday, she will refer to the inspirational | :03:43. | :03:47.
work of the many charities with which she has been | :03:48. | :03:50.
associated during her reign. She will talk also of the work | :03:51. | :03:52.
of the many unsung heroes she meets around the country - | :03:53. | :03:55.
carers, community leaders "Ordinary people", as she puts it, | :03:56. | :03:57.
doing "extraordinary" things. The departure of the Queen | :03:58. | :04:02.
and the Duke of Edinburgh to Sandringham had to be delayed | :04:03. | :04:07.
for 24 hours earlier in the week because both were said to be | :04:08. | :04:10.
suffering from heavy colds. Buckingham Palace has said nothing | :04:11. | :04:12.
further about their health, but there's no reason to think | :04:13. | :04:15.
they won't be joining other members of the family this morning | :04:16. | :04:17.
for the Christmas service There will be sadness at the news | :04:18. | :04:20.
that Zara Tyndall has lost the baby she was expecting with her husband, | :04:21. | :04:28.
Mike, in the spring. It would have been | :04:29. | :04:30.
their second child. Absent from Sandrigham this year | :04:31. | :04:33.
will be the Duke and Duchess Of Cambridge and their two children, | :04:34. | :04:36.
George and Charlotte. In a break with tradition, | :04:37. | :04:39.
they're having a family Christmas in Berkshire, | :04:40. | :04:41.
at the home of the Duchess's Let's speak now to our reporter | :04:42. | :04:43.
Emilia Papadopoulos who is at Sandringham | :04:44. | :04:50.
for us this morning. What can we expect | :04:51. | :04:52.
from the day ahead? Already, people are gathering for a | :04:53. | :05:05.
glimpse of the Royal family. Merry Christmas. A beautiful, windy | :05:06. | :05:11.
Christmas morning at Sandringham. About 50 people have been here since | :05:12. | :05:16.
6am. I spoke to one lady from Florida who has come to see the | :05:17. | :05:21.
Queen. They will be queueing for a while. In an hour, the Queen will | :05:22. | :05:27.
come to Saint Mary Magdalene Church to receive Communion privately and | :05:28. | :05:30.
later the family will join her for the traditional Christmas Day | :05:31. | :05:32.
service. Everyone is wondering whether she | :05:33. | :05:37.
will be in good health. As we heard, she and the Duke of Edinburgh had to | :05:38. | :05:46.
delay their trip up here, suffering from heavy colds. | :05:47. | :05:48.
There has been disappointment with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge | :05:49. | :05:50.
and their children not here. Prince Harry and members of the family will | :05:51. | :05:55.
be here, they arrived yesterday. Today they will have a full English | :05:56. | :05:59.
breakfast before heading to church for the service. | :06:00. | :06:02.
They will head back to the house for Christmas lunch, settled down to | :06:03. | :06:06.
watch the Queen's Speech. Like many families, this is an | :06:07. | :06:11.
opportunity to spend time together and reflect after a busy year. | :06:12. | :06:15.
We are expecting the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to lead the Royal | :06:16. | :06:18.
family to church on the Royal Sandringham estate. | :06:19. | :06:21.
Britain's senior Anglican and Catholic archbishops | :06:22. | :06:23.
are addressing uncertainty in their Christmas sermons. | :06:24. | :06:26.
Later this morning, Archbishop Of Canterbury Justin Welby will talk | :06:27. | :06:28.
about fear and division in the world as 2016 draws to a close. | :06:29. | :06:31.
Last night, the Archbishop Of Westminster spoke of similar issues. | :06:32. | :06:35.
Here's our religious affairs correspondent Martin Bashir. | :06:36. | :06:45.
A traditional start to Christmas and a solemn midnight mass | :06:46. | :06:47.
Cardinal Vincent Nichols began his sermon by quoting the poet | :06:48. | :06:57.
WB Yeats, referring to a turbulent year, with many fearing that things | :06:58. | :07:00.
may fall apart, that the centre cannot hold. | :07:01. | :07:07.
The last six months in particular has seen a widespread anxiety | :07:08. | :07:12.
and uncertainty at many levels, at life in this country and in those | :07:13. | :07:16.
major partnerships and neighbours that we have. | :07:17. | :07:21.
So, with Europe, with America, with the Middle East, | :07:22. | :07:23.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who, like last year, | :07:24. | :07:37.
will deliver his Christmas message later this morning, | :07:38. | :07:39.
will also address the division and uncertainty that's | :07:40. | :07:41.
Cardinal Nichols said the answer to our insecurity was neither | :07:42. | :07:49.
materialism nor the pursuit of selfish interest, | :07:50. | :07:51.
but rather a renewed focus on the life of Christ. | :07:52. | :08:00.
Cardinal Nichols concluded his midnight sermon by emphasising | :08:01. | :08:02.
the fact of Christ's birth, which he said was marked in time, | :08:03. | :08:05.
recorded in the Gospels and celebrated today. | :08:06. | :08:16.
The American President-elect Donald Trump says he intends | :08:17. | :08:20.
to close his charitable foundation, to avoid any conflict of interest | :08:21. | :08:22.
The Trump Foundation is currently being investigated | :08:23. | :08:26.
by New York's Attorney General to establish whether it supported | :08:27. | :08:28.
a Republican political campaign in Florida in 2013. | :08:29. | :08:40.
At the bottom line here is that Donald Trump does not give any | :08:41. | :08:43.
He has not given any of his own money between 2009 and 2014, | :08:44. | :08:47.
so at the heart of this is a foundation that goes to other | :08:48. | :08:51.
Then there is another set of controversies, | :08:52. | :08:56.
and this is what the attorney general in New York is looking | :08:57. | :08:59.
at, is whether or not there is self dealing. | :09:00. | :09:01.
You're not supposed to use a non-profit foundation | :09:02. | :09:03.
in the United States to make political contributions, | :09:04. | :09:05.
Thousands of people are being urged to leave their homes | :09:06. | :09:21.
in the Philippines as a super-typhoon roars towards | :09:22. | :09:24.
Typhoon Nok-ten is expected to hit today, bringing winds | :09:25. | :09:27.
Dozens of ports have been closed, as officials warn of potentially | :09:28. | :09:31.
Staff in a hospital in the American city Albuquerque have been making | :09:32. | :09:41.
the most of the special deliveries this Christmas. | :09:42. | :09:42.
Newborn babies have been keeping warm inside stockings. | :09:43. | :09:47.
It's become something of a tradition, and volunteers | :09:48. | :09:49.
still have their stockings even though their | :09:50. | :09:51.
Although it seems not everyone this year was equally impressed | :09:52. | :09:57.
We'll get the weather with Nick in a few minutes' time. | :09:58. | :10:12.
Christmas is a time for family, but if you don't have one | :10:13. | :10:15.
The poet Lemn Sissay knows exactly how that feels. | :10:16. | :10:18.
He was fostered as a baby but when he turned 12 his foster | :10:19. | :10:21.
He spent the next five years in and out of children's homes. | :10:22. | :10:25.
That's why each year he organises special Christmas dinners for young | :10:26. | :10:27.
Breakfast's Jayne McCubbin went to meet him as he prepared for one | :10:28. | :10:31.
Not everyone has someone at Christmas. | :10:32. | :10:39.
If I visited a friend's house, I often felt I was the boy with no | :10:40. | :11:04.
family who was going to visit families, you know? | :11:05. | :11:09.
Here in Hackney he is getting ready for one of his Care Leaver's | :11:10. | :11:16.
Christmas Dinners, a project that has grown from one city to five | :11:17. | :11:19.
All of the gifts here have been donated by strangers and the parties | :11:20. | :11:26.
Do we really not know the words to Jingle Bells? | :11:27. | :11:32.
The only reason we do the Christmas dinner is so that those young care | :11:33. | :11:36.
leavers go away with a memory that they can look onto next year. | :11:37. | :11:41.
That's all Christmas is, it's the making of a memory | :11:42. | :11:43.
So we all come around the Christmas dinner table | :11:44. | :11:51.
and we all remember, "We did this last year | :11:52. | :11:54.
For a lot of care leavers, the memory was a bad one | :11:55. | :11:58.
This is his passion, and for the team that | :11:59. | :12:07.
This is Amanda, who is sorting everybody out. | :12:08. | :12:11.
We have 20 volunteers, 60 young people, | :12:12. | :12:22.
four hairstylists, artists, musicians, social workers coming | :12:23. | :12:25.
down to do a really amazing Christmas | :12:26. | :12:29.
This is Sabrina, who is the hair woman and stylist and she is pretty | :12:30. | :12:38.
As a care leaver myself, I know how important it is to give | :12:39. | :12:43.
self-esteem and to feel like people care. | :12:44. | :12:48.
Ryan is going to be the chef for the evening. | :12:49. | :12:56.
When I was 14, I went into temporary foster care for a weekend and it | :12:57. | :13:01.
sort of turned into nearly five years. | :13:02. | :13:06.
Christmas is about family and not everyone is lucky enough | :13:07. | :13:08.
The best part of the day was sitting down and having | :13:09. | :13:15.
Messages from previous dinners show just how much they mean | :13:16. | :13:19.
I hope they have one next year as well! | :13:20. | :13:35.
A Russian military plane that has crashed just after take-off. | :13:36. | :13:52.
Let's speak to our Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg | :13:53. | :13:54.
On a day that is, to wake up to this news, so many are in shock. | :13:55. | :14:08.
Absolutely, Russia is certainly shocked. This jet belonged to the | :14:09. | :14:15.
Russian Defence Ministry. We know it took off from Sochi airport in | :14:16. | :14:20.
southern Russia earlier today. It was bound for Syria, the Russian | :14:21. | :14:25.
army base. A few minutes after take off it disappeared from radar | :14:26. | :14:29.
screens. Later the Russian defence mystery confirmed the plane had | :14:30. | :14:34.
crashed into the Black Sea. A search and salvage operation was launched. | :14:35. | :14:41.
A short while ago, we had fragments have been located from the plane | :14:42. | :14:47.
with one body recovered. There is no talk of survivors. This is pretty | :14:48. | :14:53.
much a salvage operation. Who was on board, we believe there were 92 | :14:54. | :14:59.
passengers and crew, including members of the world famous song and | :15:00. | :15:04.
dance ensemble, the Alexandra military band due to give a concert | :15:05. | :15:08.
on New Year to Russian servicemen in Syria. | :15:09. | :15:14.
More details are coming through. You mentioned some debris has been | :15:15. | :15:19.
discovered. The recovery operation as many feared this is now must have | :15:20. | :15:23.
got underway as soon as that news came through. | :15:24. | :15:28.
Absolutely. The Defence Ministry said the operation was launched very | :15:29. | :15:34.
quickly and taking part in this operation a number of Russian ships | :15:35. | :15:39.
and helicopters. As I say, little hope of finding anyone alive. Now, | :15:40. | :15:44.
the focus will be on finding as much of the debris of the plane and the | :15:45. | :15:51.
black box flight recorder is so that Russian investigators can piece | :15:52. | :15:54.
together what happened in the air that brought this jet crashing down | :15:55. | :16:02.
into the sea. Those details coming through over | :16:03. | :16:04.
the next hours and days. And you're watching | :16:05. | :16:08.
Breakfast from BBC News. A Russian military plane has crashed | :16:09. | :16:10.
into the Black Sea with more The Queen will highlight "ordinary | :16:11. | :16:15.
people doing extraordinary things" when she delivers her annual | :16:16. | :16:20.
Christmas message today. Here's Nick with a look | :16:21. | :16:32.
at this morning's weather. It is unseasonably mild today? It | :16:33. | :16:44.
felt almost balmy as I walked into the office. | :16:45. | :16:47.
You are right, anybody stepping outside this Christmas Day morning | :16:48. | :16:50.
will notice that because right across the UK just about | :16:51. | :16:56.
temperatures are in double figures. This is a view of sunrise in | :16:57. | :17:00.
Norfolk. Happy Christmas to all our weather watchers. | :17:01. | :17:05.
Take a look at these temperatures. 14 Celsius in the Highlands of | :17:06. | :17:12.
Scotland. It really is an incredible start to Christmas Day. It is near | :17:13. | :17:19.
to a record, we are watching that closely. The number to beat for the | :17:20. | :17:25.
warmest Christmas Day on record is 15.6, we reached that twice before, | :17:26. | :17:31.
once in Devon, and Edinburgh. We will end up very close to it but we | :17:32. | :17:39.
may not break that record. It is mild but also quite windy, | :17:40. | :17:46.
taking the edge of things. Plenty of cloud, outbreaks of rain across | :17:47. | :17:50.
western parts. You can see this area of rainfall moving through this | :17:51. | :17:55.
afternoon. Behind that, temperatures will start to come down. Northern | :17:56. | :18:00.
Scotland will feel much colder compared with right now. | :18:01. | :18:06.
That wet weather through Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern | :18:07. | :18:11.
England. Some rain to be had, damp and drizzly through south-west | :18:12. | :18:18.
England and Wales. Some brightness in north-east Wales, 15 Celsius, but | :18:19. | :18:23.
blustery across-the-board. Gales or severe gales in northern Scotland. | :18:24. | :18:31.
Wintry showers as it turns colder. Just before midnight, on higher | :18:32. | :18:36.
ground, you may see some snow. Colder by the end of the night as | :18:37. | :18:41.
that bad of wet weather sweeps southwards. | :18:42. | :18:45.
Northern Scotland tomorrow, you are closest to storm, the centre of | :18:46. | :18:49.
which is well to the north of the UK. Stormy conditions. An amber | :18:50. | :18:57.
warning from the Met Office. Tomorrow could see gusts in excess | :18:58. | :19:00.
of 80 miles an hour so some disruption. Wintry showers at low | :19:01. | :19:06.
levels on Boxing Day in Scotland. Elsewhere, a quieter picture. It | :19:07. | :19:13.
will feel colder tomorrow. If you're thinking of a Boxing Day walk away | :19:14. | :19:17.
from those storms, it is looking pretty nice. If you have any of that | :19:18. | :19:26.
food to walk off. We will take a look at your menu | :19:27. | :19:28.
later on, it is impressive. However you're celebrating today, | :19:29. | :19:31.
we want to know what's going to make it a really special | :19:32. | :19:33.
Christmas for you. We've been asking some people | :19:34. | :19:36.
in Manchester what's going to make I have just retired and it is my | :19:37. | :19:50.
first Christmas having my home and enjoy everything! | :19:51. | :19:58.
It is cold but in Israel is hot. I would like to spend it at home | :19:59. | :20:03.
with my family and friends in Australia. | :20:04. | :20:07.
It is her first Christmas, so it is quite important to us really, | :20:08. | :20:13.
fantastic. My granddaughter was born on the 2nd | :20:14. | :20:17.
of August. Me and my son helped to deliver her. Her first Christmas, my | :20:18. | :20:22.
first grandchild ever, it is really special. I have gone overboard. So | :20:23. | :20:25.
what? It is allowed, isn't it? So, tell us why this Christmas | :20:26. | :20:33.
is going to be a really Carol says her daughter is in labour | :20:34. | :20:45.
at this very moment. Carol, tell us how it is going for your | :20:46. | :20:46.
granddaughter. And the first Christmas Sandra says | :20:47. | :21:01.
for the rest of her life after treatment, we wish her well. | :21:02. | :21:05.
Denise says Christmas will be special because she is joining a | :21:06. | :21:10.
group of others at a church in learning to cook Christmas dinner | :21:11. | :21:16.
for 70 elderly people who would otherwise be on their own. | :21:17. | :21:19.
William Williams says he lives in China and is watching us from China, | :21:20. | :21:24.
good morning. A special day because his wife has promised him an English | :21:25. | :21:29.
dinner today as an English Christmas treat. It isn't Turkey but pizza! He | :21:30. | :21:37.
even has a can of lager! Merry Christmas to you all. | :21:38. | :21:42.
Christmas is traditionally a time for family and relaxation | :21:43. | :21:44.
So if you're worried about it all getting a bit too much, | :21:45. | :21:49.
we've got a team of experts here to guide you through the day. | :21:50. | :21:51.
Here with me is agony aunt Suzie Hayman. | :21:52. | :21:54.
good morning to you all. What is the biggest nickel that will bug us | :21:55. | :22:05.
today? Probably setting the bar too high | :22:06. | :22:08.
and going for perfection. Thinking back to your childhood and | :22:09. | :22:12.
remembering wonderful Christmases and as a parent you have to deliver | :22:13. | :22:18.
that. But you edit out the arguments and you don't see the strain your | :22:19. | :22:23.
parents are under to provide it. Now you are a parent all you see is | :22:24. | :22:27.
pressure. That and agree of perfect meal, | :22:28. | :22:32.
perfect time. There is no such thing as perfection. Go for good enough | :22:33. | :22:36.
and forgive yourself. They will love it much more a you | :22:37. | :22:41.
are relaxed and enjoying yourself. You don't remember the meal, you | :22:42. | :22:45.
remember the atmosphere. Tents, horrible, strained... | :22:46. | :22:53.
You talk about expectations you put on yourself. | :22:54. | :22:58.
The psychology of Christmas, the build up, the pressure people put on | :22:59. | :23:04.
themselves. Often they hide this and don't ask for help. Any tips on how | :23:05. | :23:13.
to take a moment or speak up? For some people this is a time of | :23:14. | :23:18.
great happiness. For others, it can be nonetheless, remembering those | :23:19. | :23:21.
who have passed away. People with mental health problems, | :23:22. | :23:26.
take time for yourselves. It is located turn around and say, I | :23:27. | :23:31.
am not feeling great, I need time out. Sit in your room, talk to | :23:32. | :23:38.
people how you are feeling. If it is overwhelming, call the Samaritans, | :23:39. | :23:42.
they are open over Christmas. They are a number is available. If things | :23:43. | :23:46.
are worse and your thoughts are really negative, call the NHS and | :23:47. | :23:51.
they can direct you to the correct service. | :23:52. | :23:55.
I know you are AGP parts are in touch other colleagues, is it a | :23:56. | :24:00.
busier time of year in terms of people asking for help? | :24:01. | :24:06.
It is. Only use accident and emergency if it is just that, not | :24:07. | :24:12.
for minor ailments. People panicked because GP surgeries are closed for | :24:13. | :24:17.
an extra two days. Use the NHS choices website. Speak to family and | :24:18. | :24:26.
friends if you have a concern. Often we forget we have the community to | :24:27. | :24:31.
ask questions. Taking time out, but the reason we | :24:32. | :24:38.
have a vet on the server is we can't remember other members of our | :24:39. | :24:44.
family, our pets. You have lots of people descending on your home or | :24:45. | :24:48.
you have left to go to somebody else, what should you be thinking | :24:49. | :24:52.
about? You should be concerned about the | :24:53. | :24:59.
personal and of your pets, they need to have their own space, to escape | :25:00. | :25:03.
from the crowd and strangers and the noise. Conversely, if you are | :25:04. | :25:09.
leaving them, make sure you let them out to go to the toilet, leave the | :25:10. | :25:14.
radio on, make a fuss when you come home. They are emotionally dependent | :25:15. | :25:19.
on us. And get out. If you have a dog, go | :25:20. | :25:25.
for a walk. They expect their routine. They need | :25:26. | :25:31.
their walk. Take the family out, let them enjoy themselves. They will | :25:32. | :25:37.
love it if they have more people to go out for their walk. | :25:38. | :25:43.
That word routine is important. Incredibly important for humans as | :25:44. | :25:49.
well. You feel safe if you have a routine. Children need it. We often | :25:50. | :25:59.
think, let routines go by the board. Actually, you start feeling quite | :26:00. | :26:02.
tetchy and a bit scared when routines though. Keep the bedtime | :26:03. | :26:08.
routine. Try and keep to normal eating times. People feel secure if | :26:09. | :26:15.
that is happening. Can we talk about food and drink, it | :26:16. | :26:23.
is the time to be merry. Talking to my husband last night, I | :26:24. | :26:30.
can't say don't enjoy yourself. Everything is fine in moderation. | :26:31. | :26:37.
The vast majority who turn up at accident and emergency have injuries | :26:38. | :26:40.
which are alcohol related. Don't drink and drive. Keep children out | :26:41. | :26:46.
of the kitchen. Enjoy yourselves. Sensibility must still rain. A quick | :26:47. | :26:53.
word on food and titbits? The reality is we do give titbits, | :26:54. | :27:01.
give them the meat, not the gravy or the fatty leftovers, or mince pies | :27:02. | :27:06.
or Christmas cake which will harm your pets. | :27:07. | :27:16.
Keep it to yourself, why not! We will hear from you later on your | :27:17. | :27:18.
final thoughts. You have been sending in some lovely | :27:19. | :27:33.
photos. Jack and George Wheeler, 24 years ago, a pair of duties, in | :27:34. | :27:40.
1992. Still a pair of cuties, recreating that special moment. | :27:41. | :27:47.
And here, you can see in the space of a year, Lucas went from bump to | :27:48. | :27:51.
baby. And these families are having fun | :27:52. | :27:59.
with this recreation, that was then. Hey! That is a good one. If you have | :28:00. | :28:04.
pictures like this, keep sending your photos in to us. | :28:05. | :28:08.
We will try to show a few more later. | :28:09. | :28:12.
I will be back with the headlines shortly. | :28:13. | :29:22.
Hello, this is Breakfast on Christmas morning | :29:23. | :29:23.
Now, a summary of this morning's main news: | :29:24. | :29:30.
A Russian military plane has crashed into the Black Sea just minutes | :29:31. | :29:33.
The Russian Defence Ministry says there were at least | :29:34. | :29:38.
The aircraft was flying to Syria and disappeared from radar around 20 | :29:39. | :29:47.
Some debris has now been found in the sea | :29:48. | :29:51.
and an investigation has been launched. | :29:52. | :29:53.
"Inspiration" is to be the theme of the Queen's Christmas | :29:54. | :29:56.
She will speak of drawing strength from meeting ordinary people doing | :29:57. | :30:02.
The Queen is at her home in Sandringham in Norfolk with other | :30:03. | :30:08.
members of the royal family, though not with the Duke | :30:09. | :30:10.
They are spending the day with the Middleton family. | :30:11. | :30:30.
The Archbishop of Canterbury will talk about feeding division has 2016 | :30:31. | :30:36.
draws to a close. Last night Cardinal Nichols spoke of similar | :30:37. | :30:38.
issues. The American President-elect Donald | :30:39. | :30:42.
Trump says he intends to close his charitable foundation | :30:43. | :30:44.
to avoid any conflict of interest The Trump Foundation | :30:45. | :30:47.
is currently being investigated by New York's attorney general, | :30:48. | :30:50.
to establish whether it supported a Republican political | :30:51. | :30:52.
campaign in Florida in 2013. The US journalist Lynn Sweet says | :30:53. | :30:54.
it's a complicated situation. At the bottom line here is that | :30:55. | :31:04.
Donald Trump does not give any He has not given any | :31:05. | :31:07.
of his own money between 2009 and 2014, so at the heart of this | :31:08. | :31:11.
is a foundation that goes to other Then there is another | :31:12. | :31:15.
set of controversies, and this is what the attorney | :31:16. | :31:20.
general in New York is looking at, is whether or not | :31:21. | :31:28.
there is self dealing. You're not supposed to use | :31:29. | :31:30.
a non-profit foundation in the United States to make | :31:31. | :31:32.
political contributions, Let's speak now to our reporter | :31:33. | :31:34.
Emilia Papadopoulos who is at Sandringham | :31:35. | :31:47.
for us this morning. What can we expect | :31:48. | :31:49.
from the day ahead? Merry Christmas. It's a beautiful | :31:50. | :32:02.
morning here on the Sandringham estate and the crowds have actually | :32:03. | :32:06.
been building since six o'clock this morning, everyone hoping to catch | :32:07. | :32:09.
Eclipse of the Queen and the Royal Family as they make their way up the | :32:10. | :32:15.
church -- catch a glimpse. We spoke to lady who had come only from | :32:16. | :32:21.
Florida and let me introduce you to this lady from Arizona. I came to | :32:22. | :32:26.
visit my kids and surprised them for Christmas and this is a treat I got | :32:27. | :32:30.
for coming this far, I get to see the Queen. I'm looking forward to | :32:31. | :32:38.
it. What is so special to you? Why have you come all this way? Had come | :32:39. | :32:42.
to visit a few years and it's just amazing. The whole history and her | :32:43. | :32:52.
reign and everything. Let's move a little bit further down the crowd to | :32:53. | :32:55.
a family who have come from Lincolnshire today. You looking | :32:56. | :33:00.
forward to seeing Her Majesty? Very much. You got some flowers for the | :33:01. | :33:09.
Queen. What colour of course do you think she will be wearing? Green | :33:10. | :33:16.
because it is Christmassy. She wore red last year so she would be | :33:17. | :33:20.
wearing red again. Expecting 500 people to be lining up here when the | :33:21. | :33:26.
gates around ten o'clock and people will see the Royal Family as they | :33:27. | :33:29.
make their way from the house even the Sandringham estate, about 300 | :33:30. | :33:37.
yards. They are usually led by the Duke of Edinburgh. People will hope | :33:38. | :33:42.
he and the Queen and in good health after they believe is trickier. | :33:43. | :33:45.
We're expecting the Royal Family in a few hours. | :33:46. | :34:16.
Merry Christmas. It is lovely to have you with us and it is so | :34:17. | :34:21.
interesting, seeing what you're doing and why you're doing it. I | :34:22. | :34:26.
mentioned that you were put into foster care shortly after you were | :34:27. | :34:31.
born. Then what happened? Then I went into children's homes, about 45 | :34:32. | :34:37.
children's homes over the next five years and at 17 I left the care | :34:38. | :34:43.
system, I was legally an adult. What did that mean to you? Because after | :34:44. | :34:48.
being in care homes, whether it was pleasant or unpleasant, you always | :34:49. | :34:55.
had people around you. What do people mean to you once you let the | :34:56. | :35:04.
care system? When you leave the care system, you leave everything before | :35:05. | :35:09.
you, there is no relativity, no longer staff or social workers to | :35:10. | :35:14.
call you on Christmas Day. It became a time of isolation. A time of | :35:15. | :35:26.
aloneness and a time of watching how other families act and react on that | :35:27. | :35:30.
day. People come together at Christmas and look after each other | :35:31. | :35:34.
at Christmas. They were aware, leaving care, that there was nobody | :35:35. | :35:39.
coming together and looking after you, nobody to argue with about the | :35:40. | :35:44.
fact you don't like Brussels sprouts! You didn't have the | :35:45. | :35:53.
argument, he didn't have that -- you didn't have that beautiful thing | :35:54. | :35:56.
that happens at Christmas which is people coming together. Even if they | :35:57. | :36:01.
argue, even if they don't get along, they are together. It's the | :36:02. | :36:08.
interaction and feeling, isn't it? So you have set up this Christmas | :36:09. | :36:15.
dinner. It is a Christmas dinner for care leavers between 18 and 25. This | :36:16. | :36:21.
unit is in Manchester, Leeds, London, Oxford and Liverpool and we | :36:22. | :36:27.
get professional chefs, we get the top food, we get incredible presents | :36:28. | :36:36.
and we provide a full day of love in action for those care leavers, which | :36:37. | :36:42.
is basically making sure they have an incredible time and they're not | :36:43. | :36:48.
alone. It's not a charity, it's run by the community and the people of | :36:49. | :36:51.
Britain. That's the most exciting thing about it for me. The key lever | :36:52. | :37:06.
is being cared for by us. -- cheer lever -- care leaver. How do you get | :37:07. | :37:12.
people involved? In Oxford for example, the producer of Tracy | :37:13. | :37:18.
beaker has been wrapping presents and has given his office over so | :37:19. | :37:24.
that all the presents can be held in Liverpool, the arts school | :37:25. | :37:29.
restaurant have done all the food and donated the Cherokees. In | :37:30. | :37:34.
London, we've got a brilliant stylist called Sabrina who was the | :37:35. | :37:38.
stylus for Jennifer Hudson, she is holding a salon at the Christmas | :37:39. | :37:43.
dinner. The idea is that the light standards for the care leaver are | :37:44. | :37:47.
high so they deserve to have the absolute best today. They're all in | :37:48. | :37:53.
it for them for the following reasons. It's not like the person | :37:54. | :38:02.
with no family is distant and we are throwing their coins at them, this | :38:03. | :38:08.
care is just as much about the volunteers as the people in care. | :38:09. | :38:11.
There is an equal exchange of love between the two. We are feeling the | :38:12. | :38:17.
love your! Good luck and have a great Christmas Day. Well done for | :38:18. | :38:24.
making so many people's lights in little bit better today. Merry | :38:25. | :38:28.
Christmas. -- people's lives. Now, if you're already missing | :38:29. | :38:35.
the excitement this year's Strictly Come Dancing had to offer, | :38:36. | :38:37.
I've got some good news for you. Later today, there'll be | :38:38. | :38:40.
a Strictly Christmas special, where dancers past and present | :38:41. | :38:42.
will tango, jive and cha-cha it out, to get another chance of winning | :38:43. | :38:45.
that coveted glitter-ball trophy. I went behind the scenes to take | :38:46. | :38:47.
a look at what gives the Christmas episode, | :38:48. | :38:50.
that fabulous magic and sparkle. It may not look like much | :38:51. | :38:52.
from the outside but behind closed Welcome to Elstree Studios, | :38:53. | :38:55.
the home of Strictly Come Dancing. It's been another year | :38:56. | :39:09.
of sparkles and salsas and last Ore the champion wowed | :39:10. | :39:19.
the audience and judges. It was an emotional end | :39:20. | :39:21.
to the series as the grandfather of Strictly Len Goodman bid | :39:22. | :39:25.
an emotional farewell panel since the programme | :39:26. | :39:27.
started 12 years ago. But he's back for one last time | :39:28. | :39:34.
with six former contestants taking to the stage for a Christmas feast | :39:35. | :39:39.
that will not disappoint. So what does it take | :39:40. | :39:41.
to put a festive bonanza Behind the scenes at Strictly, | :39:42. | :39:44.
all these fantastic costumes. This department is | :39:45. | :39:49.
where it all happens. The Christmas show | :39:50. | :39:57.
is Christmas themes. We've got Love Actually, | :39:58. | :40:07.
Home Alone, Frozen. We endeavour to make everything | :40:08. | :40:13.
sparkly and Christmassy. Taking part in this year's | :40:14. | :40:22.
series threw me out of my It was totally different to anything | :40:23. | :40:25.
I'd ever done before, but I loved every minute of it, | :40:26. | :40:32.
and coming back to the studios, well, it was like I | :40:33. | :40:36.
had never been away. Bumping into familiar faces, | :40:37. | :40:38.
catching up with old friends. And how are this year's | :40:39. | :40:43.
competitors finding it? You remember the good bits, | :40:44. | :40:49.
not how scary it is to get My family are coming | :40:50. | :40:52.
to me for Christmas My mum has been away | :40:53. | :40:56.
and doesn't know I'm doing What should we expect from you? I'm | :40:57. | :41:18.
doing the Charleston. It's very quick but it's very fun. I'm working | :41:19. | :41:27.
on my swivel. He's got it! My Charleston isn't... This is better. | :41:28. | :41:33.
Tell us about the outfit. Your theme is Frozen, your Elsa. It's so | :41:34. | :41:52.
popular. He's magnetic. The pink bowtie, it does it all. It's a | :41:53. | :42:00.
privilege for me. I'm the luckiest. I still have my backstage privileges | :42:01. | :42:09.
and managed to sneak into Bros starred Matt before the show. -- | :42:10. | :42:25.

the best till last. Happy Christmas to everybody | :43:10. | :43:24.
watching BBC Breakfast from me, Robbie Williams. I hope you have a | :43:25. | :43:26.
lovely day. Many of us will be settling | :43:27. | :43:46.
in for a day of presents, But not everyone will be spending | :43:47. | :43:49.
today in a traditional way, and hundreds of thousands of people | :43:50. | :43:53.
will be working today. Dr Joel Lockwood is one of those, | :43:54. | :43:55.
he's one of the people manning One slightly more unusual way | :43:56. | :43:56.
of celebrating the big day is taking The 52nd annual charity swim | :43:57. | :43:59.
will be taking place today It's organised by Gareth Owens, | :44:00. | :44:03.
and he can tell me all about it now. Tell us about the history. Hello, | :44:04. | :44:19.
Merry Christmas. This is 52nd swim. My father was one of the originators | :44:20. | :44:26.
52 years ago. It is merely to get community spirit and get people out | :44:27. | :44:31.
for a bit of fresh air before their big lunch. We decided to collect | :44:32. | :44:39.
money and over the years, we've collected in | :44:40. | :44:51.
excess of ?10,000. We raised ?8,000 last year and given to various | :44:52. | :44:57.
charities so it is a great morning. We have over 1000 swimmers who will | :44:58. | :45:05.
turn up about 11 o'clock. They are doing a few final elf and safety | :45:06. | :45:17.
checks! There is a fancy dress theme as I can see. You going in like | :45:18. | :45:25.
that? I've got a doctor's note, but I might have a paddle and just | :45:26. | :45:31.
supervise the 1000 swimmers. Do more than welcome to come down! that such | :45:32. | :45:39.
a kind invitation, I think I'm going to see no because I am a chicken | :45:40. | :45:42.
when it comes to getting into the cold sea! What makes people do this | :45:43. | :45:48.
on the most gluttonous day of the year? Christmas, Chanukah, Sunday, | :45:49. | :45:58.
why would you jump into the cold sea? It's quite invigorating and | :45:59. | :46:03.
gives you an appetite to eat turkey later in the day. How better to | :46:04. | :46:18.
start the day with a nice cold swim? it sounds like lots of people are | :46:19. | :46:21.
going to be taking part and will have funds we wish you a very | :46:22. | :46:26.
Christmas. Merry Christmas to you, too. I'll give you a free round of | :46:27. | :46:35.
golf as a present if you come down! That's my kind of Christmas present! | :46:36. | :46:42.
Here's Nick with a look at this morning's weather. | :46:43. | :46:48.
The team here are all excellent at their job but they're good at other | :46:49. | :46:54.
things and Nick's secret talent is that he is a really impressive Cook. | :46:55. | :47:00.
Look at this. This is a small sample of what she cooked up for his family | :47:01. | :47:09.
for the Christmas weekend. -- what he cooked up. The pie is the | :47:10. | :47:24.
Christmas cake, it is coated in an almond paste that is toasting in the | :47:25. | :47:27.
oven and it has little Christmas shapes which I cut out. not only do | :47:28. | :47:36.
you make me feel inadequate in the kitchen but I can't even tell the | :47:37. | :47:42.
difference between a pie and a cake! It does look like a pie, it looks | :47:43. | :47:49.
like pastry. It's nearly all gone already! I don't really do the main | :47:50. | :47:51.
meal, I just want the dessert! Sea temperatures are around 12 | :47:52. | :48:10.
Celsius and the air temperature is the same on Christmas Day but we are | :48:11. | :48:13.
in double figures across the board today will stop happy Christmas to | :48:14. | :48:22.
our weather watchers. It is a Christmas Day record of 15.6 | :48:23. | :48:30.
Celsius. We've achieved that before in 1920 and 1896. Plenty of cloud | :48:31. | :48:40.
across much of the UK, especially western parts where there is rain to | :48:41. | :48:45.
content with. Sunshine is hard to come by and the wet weather and more | :48:46. | :48:49.
persistent rain works its way through Scotland and Northern | :48:50. | :48:52.
Ireland through the day. It will introduce colder air once again soon | :48:53. | :48:55.
by the end of the day in Scotland that maybe Northern Ireland, it will | :48:56. | :48:58.
be feeling colder and that temperature will come down. It may | :48:59. | :49:08.
get a 15 Celsius or close to it. We got patchy rain through other parts | :49:09. | :49:17.
of wheels and south-west England -- Wales. Through this evening tonight, | :49:18. | :49:22.
we take this band of rain southwards, and we bring in this | :49:23. | :49:31.
colder air. Stall showers in Scotland with a strengthening wind | :49:32. | :49:36.
as the storm passes through the knot of the UK -- North. We could get | :49:37. | :49:49.
gusts of 80 miles an hour. More disruption from the wind. Plenty of | :49:50. | :49:56.
showers in Scotland. Elsewhere, the wind isn't as strong. Tomorrow, | :49:57. | :49:59.
you're more likely to stay dry with some decent sunshine around so if | :50:00. | :50:04.
you're walking off the Christmas food, it will feel colder. | :50:05. | :50:21.
Lots of people have been saying to me, sorry that you're working this | :50:22. | :50:29.
morning, but I love my job so I don't mind working on Christmas Day. | :50:30. | :50:41.
I like to come in and help out, too. Merry Christmas. | :50:42. | :50:52.
Alan has written in and said please wish you Merry Christmas to offshore | :50:53. | :50:59.
workers who are away from their families. Kevin says happy Christmas | :51:00. | :51:03.
to all the roadside breakdown people who work 24 hours a day in dangerous | :51:04. | :51:14.
places. Alison says, you've been talking to people who are working | :51:15. | :51:18.
over Christmas but you have forgotten yourselves, the camera | :51:19. | :51:21.
crews, producers and presenters are all making a good show for us to | :51:22. | :51:26.
watch this morning. Thank you, Alison, Merry Christmas. I'm not | :51:27. | :51:29.
alone in the studio, I have a great team behind me who are all very | :51:30. | :51:39.
happy and very festive. It's not only Christmas, it's the first full | :51:40. | :51:50.
day of Chanukah. If you're worried about Christmas, cooking the turkey | :51:51. | :51:56.
or whatever, I've got a team of experts to help us through the day. | :51:57. | :52:01.
Here with me are Reverend Sally Hitchiner, Rabbi Benjy Rickman, | :52:02. | :52:04.
agony aunt Suzie Hayman, vet, Cameron Muir | :52:05. | :52:05.
Chanukah is tied in with Christmas this year which won't happen again | :52:06. | :52:44.
for several years. Chanukah is a Jewish festival for the community | :52:45. | :52:49.
and family to bring everybody together and when you haven't got | :52:50. | :52:58.
the pressure of going to work and not had to juggle responsibilities | :52:59. | :53:09.
with regular life. Reverend Sally, people build up to this with the | :53:10. | :53:15.
food, arranging family, manic Christmas shopping. What are you | :53:16. | :53:22.
thinking about today? Having a sense of spirituality, an opportunity to | :53:23. | :53:25.
enjoy the moment of being surrounded by family. If you're religious, you | :53:26. | :53:33.
can celebrate God being with us and you can go to a church service. Lots | :53:34. | :53:43.
of churches have Carol services. Not even as a Christian, people just | :53:44. | :53:49.
enjoy the magic. I think that is something more and more people are | :53:50. | :53:54.
doing. Statistics are rising, almost half of Londoners go to some sort of | :53:55. | :54:00.
Christmas service and is a great website run by the Church of England | :54:01. | :54:05.
called Christmas Near You where you can find a local service. Going out | :54:06. | :54:12.
for a walk on Christmas Day, having a break, doing a jigsaw puzzle, | :54:13. | :54:19.
that's my favourite thing! We have been talking about just taking some | :54:20. | :54:28.
time out. It's very important separating in the home, letting the | :54:29. | :54:32.
kids do their thing. There is a pressure to be a picture postcard | :54:33. | :54:40.
family. Go for a good enough, spread the load. So many mums think they're | :54:41. | :54:50.
the ones that have to do it all and they become resentful and tired. | :54:51. | :55:01.
Hand out jobs to everybody. Giving people responsibilities makes them | :55:02. | :55:04.
feel much more part of it and it means you're not doing everything. | :55:05. | :55:13.
Lets not forget the pets. They need time and attention but also space. | :55:14. | :55:16.
You also need to make sure people don't give them things they | :55:17. | :55:21.
shouldn't. We like giving her pet treats but be careful. Chocolate is | :55:22. | :55:31.
dangerous for animals. Leftovers, mince pies, Christmas cakes, they | :55:32. | :55:41.
are poisonous to dogs. And to the waistline! For dogs, my major | :55:42. | :55:51.
concern are things with great sound reasons, fatty leftovers, bones and | :55:52. | :55:57.
cats, watch out for tinsel, they like playing with it, they eat it | :55:58. | :56:03.
and we have two extract it. I fight with my cat over the ribbons! The | :56:04. | :56:10.
pets we need to be worried about are mindful about. There are two issues, | :56:11. | :56:22.
not only the physical results of overindulging in food and alcohol, | :56:23. | :56:30.
also being aware of mental health. It's a good time to look after each | :56:31. | :56:35.
other. If you got elderly neighbours, elderly relatives, give | :56:36. | :56:41.
them a ring, knock on their tour, check that the -- they are OK. Let | :56:42. | :56:54.
them know they can talk to other people and things are getting bad, | :56:55. | :57:01.
the Samaritans are available. If things are overwhelming, you can | :57:02. | :57:09.
always fall on the NHS on 111 -- phone the NHS. Celebrate and have | :57:10. | :57:16.
moments of spirituality but if you're not with family, Christmas is | :57:17. | :57:22.
also for you. Make time to be festive yourself. Find the truth and | :57:23. | :57:31.
inner beauty of whatever you're doing today. Companionship. Don't | :57:32. | :57:40.
forget your pets. If you are cooking, you don't do the washing | :57:41. | :57:45.
up, Doctor's orders! I wish you all a very Merry Sunday in general and | :57:46. | :57:50.
thank you for joining us. Christmas is a time for keeping | :57:51. | :57:56.
with traditions, and we've been asking for your photos | :57:57. | :57:59.
from a Christmas past, John Burns and his cousin look | :58:00. | :58:03.
excited to be getting And they look just as thrilled | :58:04. | :58:09.
almost two decades later. And some pets have been getting | :58:10. | :58:22.
in on the action too - this is Amy and Isla enjoying | :58:23. | :58:27.
Christmas two years ago. And here they are two years on, | :58:28. | :58:30.
and they've clearly enjoyed And decorating the tree | :58:31. | :58:32.
is an annual event. Here's Jefferson John | :58:33. | :58:42.
and Becky Welsby decorating And to be honest I'm not sure | :58:43. | :58:43.
they've made a better That's all from | :58:44. | :58:47.
Breakfast this morning. I'll be back tomorrow | :58:48. | :58:53.
morning from six. From all the Breakfast team, | :58:54. | :58:54.
have a very merry Christmas. It's like having | :58:55. | :58:57.
the family here for Christmas. It's going to be great. | :58:58. | :59:14.
