This is Breakfast, with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker.

:00:08.:00:12.

The General Election campaign officially begins today.

:00:13.:00:14.

The Queen will meet Theresa May to mark the dissolution

:00:15.:00:17.

of the shortest parliament since 1974.

:00:18.:00:33.

Ten years on from the disappearance of Madeleine McCann,

:00:34.:00:39.

we'll be live in the Portuguese resort where she was taken.

:00:40.:00:46.

The threat to the few remaining orcas that live in British waters.

:00:47.:00:51.

More of us are paying off our mortgages beyond retirement,

:00:52.:00:54.

which means a rethink around the rules of lending

:00:55.:00:56.

Another hat-trick from Real's superstar sets them on course

:00:57.:01:04.

Hopefully it is a lovely day where you are this morning. This is the

:01:05.:01:19.

current beach outside the studio in Salford. A lovely picture. Good

:01:20.:01:25.

morning. After a chilly start, it will be dry with a fair bit of

:01:26.:01:28.

sunshine around. For the rest of England and Wales, a bit more

:01:29.:01:32.

clouds, a few showers, a breeze picking up, and chilly on the east

:01:33.:01:42.

coast. I will have all the details in 15 minutes. Thank you.

:01:43.:01:44.

Theresa May will visit Buckingham Palace today,

:01:45.:01:48.

for an audience with the Queen, to mark the dissolution of

:01:49.:01:51.

It signals the official start of the General Election campaign

:01:52.:01:54.

and just after midnight all seats in the House

:01:55.:01:56.

Attention turns to the local elections tomorrow, with crucial

:01:57.:02:00.

votes for 34 English councils, all Scottish and Welsh councils,

:02:01.:02:03.

as well as a number of local authority mayors.

:02:04.:02:05.

The deadline to register to vote in the General Election is May 22nd

:02:06.:02:09.

Our political correspondent, Ben Wright, is in Westminster.

:02:10.:02:16.

Good morning. The truth is that it starts officially today, but they

:02:17.:02:22.

have been campaigning already, haven't they? Good morning. We have

:02:23.:02:28.

had a fortnight of rallies, claims, counterclaims, already, but today,

:02:29.:02:33.

as you say, the election formally kicks off, and it will go up a gear

:02:34.:02:40.

very visually. Labour are staying on their favourite issue, the NHS. They

:02:41.:02:47.

say that if they win the general election on May eighth, they will

:02:48.:02:50.

pause restructuring of the NHS in England to be it is still a

:02:51.:02:53.

controversial issue around constituencies. They say there will

:02:54.:02:59.

be an immediate halt to merge departments etc if they win. The

:03:00.:03:04.

Tories are talking about their strongest hand. Attacking the

:03:05.:03:08.

economic credibility of Labour. They have gone through everything Labour

:03:09.:03:12.

has said in terms of spending promises since 2014. They claim

:03:13.:03:17.

there is a ?45 billion black hole in the middle of their spending plan.

:03:18.:03:23.

Labour says that could have been done, wait for the manifesto to see

:03:24.:03:27.

what will actually be done and how it is costed. One of the things

:03:28.:03:31.

people will talk about is Brexit, of course.

:03:32.:03:32.

And over in Brussels, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator,

:03:33.:03:35.

-- there is talk about the divorce bill. It will be a crucial issue

:03:36.:03:49.

over the next few years. One of the controversial things we have already

:03:50.:03:54.

discussed is the Brexit bill. How much Britain is expected to pay in

:03:55.:03:58.

the course of negotiations in terms of liabilities to the EU and claims

:03:59.:04:04.

we have already to pay. That could be about ?60 billion. The Financial

:04:05.:04:09.

Times today is reporting Michel Barnier, the chief negotiator, is

:04:10.:04:13.

talking about ?100 billion. A jump. That has not been corroborated by

:04:14.:04:18.

us. It is just speculation in a newspaper report. He will make a

:04:19.:04:24.

speech later on and I will be surprised if he talks about the

:04:25.:04:28.

figure. But no doubt it will be a key sticking point in the

:04:29.:04:31.

negotiations. Thank you. We will talk to you about that Ruby morning.

:04:32.:04:36.

-- through the morning. We'll be speaking to polling expert,

:04:37.:04:39.

Professor John Curtice, Today marks ten years

:04:40.:04:41.

since the disappearance of Madeleine The BBC's Panorama programme has

:04:42.:04:45.

learnt that Portuguese detectives never believed the main British

:04:46.:04:48.

police theory about what happened The three-year-old went missing

:04:49.:04:51.

from a holiday apartment in Praia da Despite extensive international

:04:52.:04:54.

inquiries, no firm leads have been found and the investigations

:04:55.:04:59.

remain open. It was a huge amount of money. But

:05:00.:05:19.

look at the human factor. A little girl is missing and we don't know

:05:20.:05:21.

why. The Panorama programme,

:05:22.:05:21.

Madeleine McCann: Ten Years On, will be on BBC One at nine

:05:22.:05:23.

o'clock this evening. And in the next 20 minutes,

:05:24.:05:26.

we'll be speaking to Jon Kay, who is in Praia da Luz speaking

:05:27.:05:29.

to one of the men who was originally questioned about the

:05:30.:05:33.

toddler's disappearance. Detectives have been given more time

:05:34.:05:42.

to question three young women arrested on suspicion

:05:43.:05:45.

of terror offences. The three, two aged 18,

:05:46.:05:47.

and one 19, were detained The operation was linked to a raid

:05:48.:05:49.

in north-west London last week, during which another woman was shot

:05:50.:05:54.

and wounded by police. The England footballer,

:05:55.:05:57.

Aaron Lennon, is reported to have been detained under

:05:58.:05:59.

the Mental Health Act. Police said the 30-year-old

:06:00.:06:01.

Premier League star was taken to hospital for assessment

:06:02.:06:04.

amid concerns for his welfare. His club, Everton, say

:06:05.:06:06.

they are supporting Lennon as he receives treatment

:06:07.:06:08.

for a stress-related illness. They added that his family has asked

:06:09.:06:10.

privacy at this time. Lennon's representative,

:06:11.:06:13.

Base Soccer Agency, also tweeted that their support to the winger,

:06:14.:06:15.

who joined Everton from New research suggests that people

:06:16.:06:18.

who take statins are reporting side-effects that are not caused

:06:19.:06:29.

by the cholestoral-lowering drugs. Scientists blame a psychological

:06:30.:06:31.

phenomenon where those told about the possible side affects

:06:32.:06:33.

are more likely to develop them, The authors of the research say that

:06:34.:06:37.

some people are being put off taking the medication, potentially

:06:38.:06:41.

putting lives at risk. Patients who have had heart attacks

:06:42.:07:03.

or keystrokes, who are at risk of having another heart attack, if they

:07:04.:07:11.

are worried about side-effects, they remain at very high risk. -- or

:07:12.:07:16.

strokes. They are prevented from the benefits.

:07:17.:07:18.

The two contenders in the race to be the next French President will face

:07:19.:07:22.

each other tonight in a televised debate.

:07:23.:07:24.

Centrist, Emmanuel Macron, and Marine Le Pen of the far-right

:07:25.:07:27.

will be questioned for nearly two and a half hours on a range

:07:28.:07:30.

of issues from the economy to terrorism.

:07:31.:07:32.

Marine Le Pen has the ground to catch up.

:07:33.:07:35.

She's at about 41% in the polls compared to 59% for Mr Macron.

:07:36.:07:38.

Voters will have their say on Sunday.

:07:39.:07:42.

Smartphone users in the UK can only get a 4G connection,

:07:43.:07:45.

on average, two thirds of the time, according to a study

:07:46.:07:48.

Coverage of the latest generation of mobile technology is patchy

:07:49.:07:52.

Ofcom has told mobile firms that 98% of homes must get 4G reception

:07:53.:07:56.

We were telling you yesterday about this amazing story.

:07:57.:08:12.

A surfer who was rescued after spending 32 hours in the sea

:08:13.:08:15.

has thanked the "heroes" who saved him.

:08:16.:08:17.

22-year-old, Matthew Bryce, from Glasgow, was picked up

:08:18.:08:19.

by a coastguard helicopter 13 miles off the Argyll coast on Monday night

:08:20.:08:23.

after going surfing on Sunday morning.

:08:24.:08:24.

He is now receiving treatment for the effects of hypothermia.

:08:25.:08:32.

These are pictures of him being winched to safety. Normally in those

:08:33.:08:53.

kinds of waters, it's about two hours you survive. To survive that

:08:54.:08:55.

long is incredible! A judge in San Francisco will decide

:08:56.:08:56.

later today if the taxi-hailing app, Uber, must stop developing parts

:08:57.:08:59.

of its new self-driving car. The company has been accused

:09:00.:09:02.

of stealing technology Uber has been accused of stealing

:09:03.:09:22.

self driving technology by downloading 14,000 files related to

:09:23.:09:27.

the design of the system that helps the cars see what is around them.

:09:28.:09:34.

The accused employees created Otto, a self driving truck company bought

:09:35.:09:37.

by Uber last year for millions of dollars. Now they want a judge in

:09:38.:09:42.

San Francisco to put in place an injunction on Uber using the

:09:43.:09:47.

disputed technology. It could mean then you self-driving cars being

:09:48.:09:50.

trialled in cities around the US could be taken off the roads. It

:09:51.:09:57.

could be a major setback for Uber as it tries to be the first company

:09:58.:10:00.

making commercial self-driving cars and everyday reality. Uber denies

:10:01.:10:07.

using any of Google's technology, saying they are just trying to

:10:08.:10:11.

stifle innovation and competition. BBC News, San Francisco.

:10:12.:10:17.

Here at Breakfast, we like to keep you abreast of all the important

:10:18.:10:20.

We have quite a high bar, we like to think.

:10:21.:10:29.

With this in mind we thought we should bring you the very latest

:10:30.:10:33.

This is Fu-shun, a male giant panda cub, who was caught on CCTV

:10:34.:10:37.

executing eight textbook forward rolls at a breeding centre

:10:38.:10:40.

The technique is just beautiful. A little backwards roll-out the end.

:10:41.:10:52.

We heard some last week, panda news. This has taken it right up to the

:10:53.:11:00.

new champion! I am sure there will be another. And now for the Panda

:11:01.:11:12.

League. Just kidding, the Champions League, a bit higher. Sorry, I can't

:11:13.:11:25.

say his name. Cristiano Ronaldo. There it is.

:11:26.:11:26.

It was the Cristiano show in the Bernabeu.

:11:27.:11:28.

A Ronaldo hat-trick gave Real Madrid a huge lead over their city rivals

:11:29.:11:31.

Atletico and took them to the brink of the Champions League final.

:11:32.:11:36.

Sunderland manager, David Moyes, has until six o'clock this evening

:11:37.:11:39.

to respond to an FA charge after telling a female BBC reporter

:11:40.:11:42.

Moyes made the remark after a post-match interview in March.

:11:43.:11:46.

He's said he deeply regrets his comments.

:11:47.:11:49.

World champion and world record holder, Colin Jackson,

:11:50.:11:51.

says athletics authorities should get their own house in order before

:11:52.:11:54.

they start removing records from athletes like him.

:11:55.:11:57.

A controversial anti-doping proposal could see records set

:11:58.:11:59.

And the two-time Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, has posted

:12:00.:12:05.

a photograph on social media to signal her return

:12:06.:12:08.

She's been out for four months, after being injured in a knife

:12:09.:12:12.

One of the most shocking stories in tennis over the last years. Petra

:12:13.:12:29.

Kvitova, great pictures. I hope they make fans as happy as it makes her

:12:30.:12:35.

to be back playing. Just four months! I was reading ridiculous

:12:36.:12:40.

statistics about Cristiano Ronaldo. 13 goals in the Champions League

:12:41.:12:46.

semifinals. You say it about the top players, whether they can do it on

:12:47.:12:51.

the big stage. To do it again and again, another hat-trick! Cristiano

:12:52.:12:57.

Ronaldo loves these occasions and always rises to the challenge. He

:12:58.:13:03.

scored eight goals in the last three Champions League matches. Average!

:13:04.:13:11.

Thank you. Plenty more to come from her. And you are speaking to Colin

:13:12.:13:18.

Jackson later. A beautiful day outside. A bit fresh. For some of

:13:19.:13:23.

us, a beautiful day. Dry and sunny. If you want rain as well, well.

:13:24.:13:30.

Scotland had a hot day yesterday. This is a beautiful picture. 21

:13:31.:13:39.

degrees. This morning, a mostly dry start to the day. I say that because

:13:40.:13:44.

there are some showers around. Chilly where we have breaks in the

:13:45.:13:49.

cloud. A beautiful start. The brightest conditions today in

:13:50.:13:54.

Scotland, northern England, and Northern Ireland. We will hang on to

:13:55.:13:58.

the sunshine. For the rest of the UK, cloud and splashes of rain.

:13:59.:14:02.

Across Northern Ireland, a lovely start and a bit nippy. There are

:14:03.:14:06.

some areas of cloud at the moment. They will thin and break. Good in

:14:07.:14:12.

northern England again. A chilly start but a beautiful one. Further

:14:13.:14:17.

south, back the cloud so big that in the Midlands, East Anglia, the

:14:18.:14:21.

south-east, parts of Wales, although, west Wales seeing a bright

:14:22.:14:24.

start with some sunshine, as indeed in south-west England. Eight

:14:25.:14:28.

o'clock, the temperature in the sunshine starting to come up.

:14:29.:14:33.

Further east, you can see where we have the cloud. Moving towards

:14:34.:14:38.

Sussex, Kent, East Anglia, Essex, some showers and patchy rain.

:14:39.:14:43.

Through the course of the day, the wind will pick up again as well. It

:14:44.:14:47.

will turn more showery. The cloud will drift further west as well. The

:14:48.:14:54.

furthest reaches into the sunshine. Later on, cloud building here as

:14:55.:14:59.

well. Northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, the warmers,

:15:00.:15:03.

and also the sunniest. Along the east coast, chilly, especially in

:15:04.:15:11.

the wind. -- warmest. The evening and overnight. Breezy in some

:15:12.:15:15.

central areas. Cloud around. Still producing showers as well. Further

:15:16.:15:22.

north, clearer skies, cold. Rather like yesterday where it was worn by

:15:23.:15:25.

day. The temperature really does drop quite quickly. Tomorrow, we

:15:26.:15:30.

start off with blue skies in the north of the country. Scotland,

:15:31.:15:33.

northern England, Northern Ireland. Cloud coming in through southern

:15:34.:15:37.

areas. A noticeable breeze to be breaking up cloud in places. If you

:15:38.:15:46.

are exposed to it, especially on the east coast, cold. Temperatures, 10-

:15:47.:15:51.

15 to be Friday, more of the same. The odd area still breezy. The north

:15:52.:16:00.

is the best. Highs of 15. You have guessed, if you are on the east

:16:01.:16:05.

coast, it will be nippy. Not a huge amount of change on the weekend. The

:16:06.:16:09.

chance of rain. Possibly coming into the south-west. But it is a big

:16:10.:16:17.

possibly. Thank you very much. See you later.

:16:18.:16:23.

Were to look at some of the front pages this morning. Beginning with

:16:24.:16:30.

the Guardian which concentrates on Theresa may, what she was doing and

:16:31.:16:33.

eating yesterday. She says she will be bloody difficult and she eating

:16:34.:16:38.

in Cornwall yesterday, people saving she looks awkward eating. References

:16:39.:16:49.

to add Miliband in the last general election. It is difficult to eat in

:16:50.:16:53.

front of people. She has to eat, however. It is a public relations,

:16:54.:17:01.

stunt. And what about the tomato sauce? There is no fish.

:17:02.:17:10.

He is actually right on this. Let's talk about the rest of the papers as

:17:11.:17:23.

well, the Daily Mirror talks about the McCann's ten years since

:17:24.:17:28.

Madeline went missing. Many other papers mentioning this story as

:17:29.:17:32.

well. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are suing a French

:17:33.:17:36.

magazine over topless photos taken of the Duchess in France. That is

:17:37.:17:40.

also mentioned in the express as well. And information about stations

:17:41.:17:47.

as well, doctors warning people to keep on taking their medication. --

:17:48.:17:58.

statins. And here they talk about handouts to scrap all to help

:17:59.:18:01.

convert diesel cars. In the Daily Mail. Also peddled over egg

:18:02.:18:10.

freezing. In the Times, EU tells Theresa maybe she cannot lead Brexit

:18:11.:18:14.

talks and a picture from the Met gala in New York yesterday. On the

:18:15.:18:23.

front page of the Sun this morning talk about an issue with the new

:18:24.:18:31.

pound coin. It may be worth something, I had been looking inside

:18:32.:18:36.

at this and you can see that people are found many different problems

:18:37.:18:40.

with them. Some have bits sticking out, the most common problem seems

:18:41.:18:46.

to be in the middle falling out. Can you still spend it if it is like

:18:47.:18:54.

that? Well... They're trying to get the Royal Mint to stand the story

:18:55.:18:58.

up. We can ask them. Send us pictures of your Polo pounds if you

:18:59.:19:06.

have one. Apparently somebody sold a faulty one on eBay for hundreds of

:19:07.:19:13.

pounds. Get your hammer out. I have a few pictures, it is getting to the

:19:14.:19:17.

point of the season where it is all football transfer gossip and I don't

:19:18.:19:24.

have time for that until it actually happens. So, Serena Williams showing

:19:25.:19:28.

off her baby bump for the first time since she accidentally let it out

:19:29.:19:32.

that she was pregnant. She is out with her bump for the first time.

:19:33.:19:37.

And then hearing the Daily Express, a picture from Bermuda, the captain

:19:38.:19:47.

aiming to take the America's Cup from the US. They have a secret

:19:48.:19:54.

weapon, a big new steering wheel for Ben and his boat. It has taken 18

:19:55.:20:00.

months to make and it is all ergonomically designed for his hand

:20:01.:20:04.

and he can control the entire boat. He says that will win them the

:20:05.:20:10.

America's Cup. Last week we went to a wild life Park. We did not see

:20:11.:20:15.

this, however. A polar bear jumping on a dark, trying to get the dark.

:20:16.:20:22.

This is from the Daily Mail. And this is what happened. Big there got

:20:23.:20:30.

nowhere near the dark. And I think, down the bottom, the duck is

:20:31.:20:36.

smiling. He casually wandered off. It is not everyday you get get

:20:37.:20:41.

slamdunk by a polar bear. You would miss it, however, you would be

:20:42.:20:47.

trying to film with your camera and you would miss it. Thank you. We

:20:48.:20:52.

will see war later. 20 minutes past six. -- we will see you later.

:20:53.:20:57.

It is ten years to the day that three-year-old Madeleine McCann went

:20:58.:21:00.

missing from a holiday apartment in the Portuguese village

:21:01.:21:03.

It's a case that drew attention around the world and cast a shadow

:21:04.:21:08.

Jon Kay is there for us this morning.

:21:09.:21:11.

Good morning to you. Good morning to you both. And everybody. There is an

:21:12.:21:16.

overriding sense here this morning, just as there is at home of

:21:17.:21:21.

disbelief at disbelief that it has been ten years and how much further

:21:22.:21:26.

are we, really? That little girl known around the world as Madeline,

:21:27.:21:30.

we have seen her face so many times and so much has been written and so

:21:31.:21:33.

much money spent investigating the case but we do not know much more.

:21:34.:21:37.

There is only one proven fact and that is that she disappeared from

:21:38.:21:41.

her family's apartment in this resort one decade ago. The on that

:21:42.:21:46.

we do not know why, who she was with and we do not know where she is now.

:21:47.:21:48.

Ten years. Ten years since everything changed here. Ten years

:21:49.:22:01.

since a little girl vanished on a holiday with her parents. It is

:22:02.:22:07.

unbelievable that nothing, there has been nothing. Nobody has found

:22:08.:22:11.

anything. They have not found the child, they have not found anything.

:22:12.:22:16.

Jenny remembers it like it was yesterday. She only lives a few

:22:17.:22:19.

yards from the block where Madeline disappeared. Back then she set up a

:22:20.:22:25.

stall outside, appealing for information. She never imagined that

:22:26.:22:29.

the case would be an solved a decade on. This comes into my mind every

:22:30.:22:34.

day. Every single day. Everything you look at and you see all around

:22:35.:22:41.

you is... It connects somehow to the fact that a little girl disappeared.

:22:42.:22:46.

There are still so many theories. This week it has been claimed that

:22:47.:22:51.

on the night Madeline disappeared a mystery woman was seen outside the

family's apartment. Jenny told me she saw this woman who is now

:22:56.:22:59.

reported to be a significant part of the investigation. I noticed her and

:23:00.:23:04.

it looked as if she was trying to hide. I remember she was wearing a

:23:05.:23:10.

plum coloured top. For the first time, Jenny has also told us about a

:23:11.:23:15.

car she saw that night, speeding towards the McCann's apartment,

:23:16.:23:19.

heading the wrong way down a 1-way street. It was one of those small

:23:20.:23:28.

cars, like a rental car, the normal everyday sort of rental car. Could

:23:29.:23:32.

you see the driver? I saw the driver. We just looked at each other

:23:33.:23:38.

and I think he had a very British look about him. Please give our

of appeals but no answers. It had a huge impact on my personality.

:23:59.:24:06.

Jenny's son Robert was to be named a suspect in the case. One decade on

:24:07.:24:10.

his name may have been cleared but he still cannot bear to look online.

:24:11.:24:16.

I would like to know the truth, not theories. I just want to know why

:24:17.:24:22.

that was the case. It did not only lead to me being destroyed, it led

:24:23.:24:27.

to my whole family being destroyed and affected by those allegations.

They were completely untrue. And you are adamant that you were not there

:30:36.:30:40.

Theresa May will visit Buckingham Palace today,

:30:41.:30:42.

for an audience with the Queen, to mark the dissolution of

:30:43.:30:45.

of the General Election campaign and just after midnight all seats

:30:46.:30:49.

in the House of Commons became vacant.

:30:50.:30:51.

Attention turns to the local elections tomorrow

:30:52.:30:53.

with crucial votes for 34 English councils, all Scottish and Welsh

:30:54.:30:56.

councils as well as a number of local authority mayors.

:30:57.:30:59.

in the General Election is May 22nd and polls open on June 8th.

:31:00.:31:08.

Our political correspondent, Ben Wright, is in Westminster.

:31:09.:31:17.

I suppose in some ways it is a formality, this, isn't it? They have

:31:18.:31:24.

already been campaigning. What will happen today? We have a fortnight of

:31:25.:31:29.

skirmishes and campaigning already. Now it begins in earnest. Both

:31:30.:31:33.

campaigns in their strongest territory. Labour is focusing on the

:31:34.:31:38.

NHS, announcing if they win the election on June eight, they would

:31:39.:31:42.

pause the restructuring under way in the NHS in England. Their party

:31:43.:31:50.

spokesman on health, he said why they would do this. We don't have

:31:51.:31:56.

confidence in this. Hospitals are being closed and downgraded across

:31:57.:32:01.

the country, mainly to fit a financial envelope that is not

:32:02.:32:04.

deliverable. The public has not been involved. These decisions have been

:32:05.:32:11.

done behind closed doors. We want a moratorium on this to let the public

:32:12.:32:15.

decide what is the best for local service delivery in their area. The

:32:16.:32:20.

Tories are going on Labour's economic credibility. Diane Abbott

:32:21.:32:24.

yesterday was struggling to explain yesterday how they would find new

:32:25.:32:31.

police officers. Today, the Tories are claiming is Labour was to win

:32:32.:32:35.

there would be a ?45 billion black hole. They said there are billions

:32:36.:32:41.

of pounds unaccounted for that Labour would somehow have to find.

:32:42.:32:43.

And over in Brussels, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator

:32:44.:32:46.

Brexit is obviously important. There is a talk about the possible divorce

:32:47.:32:55.

bill. Brexit is the huge underlying issue in this campaign. The most

:32:56.:33:00.

sensitive issue that will face whoever is in the election

:33:01.:33:05.

negotiating with Brussels is the negotiation of the Brexit bill.

:33:06.:33:10.

There was speculation that the EU would want ?50 billion from Britain.

:33:11.:33:17.

Now, the Financial Times said it could be up to 100 billion euros. We

:33:18.:33:24.

have not confirmed it ourselves, but it shows the early skirmishes. These

:33:25.:33:32.

are the early figures. This will be the most controversial part of the

:33:33.:33:36.

Brexit negotiation. OK. We will be with you throughout the morning.

:33:37.:33:38.

Thank you. We'll be speaking to polling expert

important tours in such a short period of time. Plus, there is a

surface change as well, and a pretty drastic one, going from clay to

grass. It is not easy on the body. And also, tactically and

Big Star, the horse which carried Nick Skelton to showjumping gold

:39:50.:39:52.

at the Rio Olympics has been retired to stud.

:39:53.:39:55.

The partnership created headlines last summer when Skelton

:39:56.:39:57.

won gold at his seventh Olympics aged 58.

:39:58.:39:59.

Big Star will remain at Skelton's home in Warwickshire but will travel

:40:00.:40:02.

He has been a major part of my life, really. I got him when he was five

:40:03.:40:13.

years old and he has been a tremendous horse right from the word

:40:14.:40:18.

go. He is right at the top. He is like one of the family. He has been

:40:19.:40:24.

here all of those years in that same box. No one else goes in that box,

:40:25.:40:28.

it's his. Such a good partnership. He said

:40:29.:40:40.

when Big Star retired, so would he, and he did. Consecutive gold medals,

:40:41.:40:45.

all they went through. Aged 58. He said it is time to go out when they

:40:46.:40:51.

are both on the top of their game. And we will hear more from the

:40:52.:40:57.

defending champion. Excellent staff. An amazing story that we were

:40:58.:40:59.

talking about yesterday. The average survival time

:41:00.:41:00.

in cold water is two hours, a surfer who was stranded

:41:01.:41:03.

in the Irish Sea, 13 miles from land How did he do it? It gets more and

:41:04.:41:07.

more incredible the more I hear it. Matthew Bryce from Glasgow has been

:41:08.:41:16.

described as being "lucky He's now recovering from hypothermia

:41:17.:41:19.

in hospital in Belfast. So, what does it take to survive

:41:20.:41:23.

such extreme conditions? To discuss this, we're joined

:41:24.:41:25.

by Ben Mitchell from the RNLI. Good morning. Good morning. Thank

:41:26.:41:32.

you for coming in. Yesterday we were talking about how this happened. It

:41:33.:41:35.

is an incredible story. A phenomenal story. One that is really rare. It

:41:36.:41:45.

was surprising to us. They did not even get the call until he had been

:41:46.:41:49.

missing for some time. That is right. To hours is the normal

:41:50.:41:54.

survival. These are pictures from when he was found. You can see the

:41:55.:41:59.

surfboard quite clearly. It was key to his survival, wasn't it? Yes.

:42:00.:42:05.

That is why we often don't find ourselves rescuing surfers. They

:42:06.:42:10.

have wetsuits and have a good community. At the end of the day, it

:42:11.:42:17.

is a big float that is always attached to them. Normally, it would

:42:18.:42:21.

bring you into shore, not take you 30 miles out yes. Most will swim

:42:22.:42:28.

past the break in ways and want to get back into shore. Generally, they

:42:29.:42:34.

are constantly being taken back to shore, which is why this story is

:42:35.:42:38.

quite rare. We know he suffered from hypothermia and is trying to get

:42:39.:42:44.

better before doing interviews. What challenges would he have faced? Was

:42:45.:42:48.

it called? Just staying out of the water? -- cold. He was clearly

:42:49.:42:57.

experienced. Yes. Cold will always be a massive factor in UK and Irish

:42:58.:43:04.

waters. It does not get much warmer than 11 degrees. The fact he is

:43:05.:43:09.

wearing a wetsuit will be one of the main reasons he survived. The fact

:43:10.:43:15.

he had that wetsuit, he was able to maintain his body temperature

:43:16.:43:20.

better. Being out of the water that long must have been terrifying. He

:43:21.:43:23.

was out overnight. For that many hours. It must have been hard. The

:43:24.:43:29.

release of seeing a helicopter must have been intense. How important is

:43:30.:43:34.

being optimistic for survival? You might see a plane go past and they

:43:35.:43:40.

may not see you. Is it important you stay hopeful? Absolutely.

:43:41.:43:43.

Absolutely. Knowing there is rescue coming is the main thing. That is

:43:44.:43:48.

why whenever we have any casualties, we talk about how important it is to

:43:49.:43:52.

let people know where you are, let people know when you are coming

:43:53.:43:57.

back. And for that reason, being optimistic will help. For anyone

:43:58.:44:01.

watching this this morning, they will probably not find themselves 30

:44:02.:44:06.

miles out to see grabbing onto a surfboard. Top tips. If you find

:44:07.:44:12.

yourself out there, how do you prepare? It depends what you are

:44:13.:44:18.

doing. The main thing to take away is respect the water. That is the

:44:19.:44:23.

national campaign we are trying to get out to people. Are the people

:44:24.:44:28.

going out there don't no what they are doing. -- half. Make sure that

:44:29.:44:33.

you calm down, float, and call for help. When you say float, what do

:44:34.:44:36.

you mean? I literally mean that. Don't panic. Absolutely. When people

:44:37.:44:43.

fall in the water, in the UK in particular, they are vulnerable to

:44:44.:44:48.

what is called cold-water shock, giving us a big shock to the nervous

:44:49.:44:53.

system. That is the most critical time. Aaron sting shall be to swim

:44:54.:45:01.

as hard as we can. We tell people not to trust that. -- Our instincts.

:45:02.:45:12.

You will have a better chance to survive. I know you give this advice

:45:13.:45:19.

all the time, but don't go in after someone. Shout calm down and

:45:20.:45:24.

breathe. That is really important. We want to go in and tell someone.

:45:25.:45:31.

The best thing to do is not to go in and rescue people. We have heard

:45:32.:45:35.

stories of that turning the tragedy as well because they get hurt as

:45:36.:45:40.

well. The best thing to do is make sure the correct help is coming.

:45:41.:45:50.

Call 999. Thank you. What an incredible story. Thank you very

:45:51.:45:52.

:49:39.:49:44.

According to the Building Societies Association mortgage debt

:49:45.:49:46.

for the over 65s is set to double by 2030.

:49:47.:49:49.

There are a number of reasons for this

:49:50.:49:51.

More older people with an existing loan are looking to remortgage

:49:52.:49:54.

their property in order to release cash to pass onto their children

:49:55.:49:57.

or grandchildren or pay for things like social care.

:49:58.:50:00.

That means they'll be paying off their loan later in life

:50:01.:50:03.

But also people are getting onto the property ladder later

:50:04.:50:05.

in life and want longer to pay off their loan because house prices

:50:06.:50:09.

According to the BSA around half of 25-34-year-olds think they'll

:50:10.:50:13.

need a mortgage lasting into retirement.

:50:14.:50:14.

It all means that lenders are having to re-think about lending

:50:15.:50:17.

Sarah Wilde is from the Building Societies Association

:50:18.:50:26.

Good morning, Sarah. Can you give us Societies Association

:50:27.:50:29.

Good morning, Sarah. Can you give us context of this? It is not a

:50:30.:50:33.

surprise, is it, that mortgage providers need to rethink how they

:50:34.:50:37.

provide muggy to people. This is something that the building society

:50:38.:50:42.

sector has been leading on and looking at a long while. We started

:50:43.:50:49.

this last year, but, all building societies need to review age limits.

:50:50.:50:55.

All 34 of them will lend to age 80 and over so things are changing. We

:50:56.:51:00.

are leading the way. As you mentioned, there are many pressures

:51:01.:51:04.

for people and normal people are needing to borrow later. Many people

:51:05.:51:08.

are getting on to the ladder in their 30s and 40s and Fulham some a

:51:09.:51:15.

lot lower of the connection to get onto the ladder. Wages are not

:51:16.:51:20.

keeping up with house price increases and there is a lot of

:51:21.:51:24.

factors that goes into that, one of those being the huge supply in

:51:25.:51:26.

housebuilding. That is something that we think needs to be addressed

:51:27.:51:30.

by the next government. We think that needs to be a real priority to

:51:31.:51:34.

help relieve the pressure. And if you are trying to get a mortgage

:51:35.:51:40.

later in life, how difficult is it? Is it much harder with credit checks

:51:41.:51:44.

and tougher regulations? Regardless of age, you need to go through

:51:45.:51:50.

income and outgoings and make sure you assess your affordability which

:51:51.:51:53.

is what a lender will look at regardless of age. I think post-

:51:54.:51:58.

credit crisis the rules were tightened up so did become a little

:51:59.:52:04.

more difficult for older borrowers but that... I think the works were

:52:05.:52:08.

doing, certainly, is raising awareness about the need to fill

:52:09.:52:12.

that gap and ensuring that people are not locked out of the housing

:52:13.:52:19.

market and that we are addressing the needs. Because the demographics

:52:20.:52:24.

are involving and needs are changing, we do need to keep up with

:52:25.:52:28.

it. We are making a good start. At the moment, what is the common age

:52:29.:52:32.

that people will get a mortgage and how do you see that changing?

:52:33.:52:36.

Traditionally you look to buy housing in your 20s, perhaps you

:52:37.:52:40.

trade up in your 30s or 40s and, hopefully, by your 50s and 60s you

:52:41.:52:44.

will have paid off your mortgage and be going into retirement debt free.

:52:45.:52:49.

What this research shows is that by 2030 is more likely that in your 30s

:52:50.:52:53.

and if you are lucky, you will be getting onto the housing ladder a

:52:54.:52:58.

bit later and because you are getting on later you will, already,

:52:59.:53:04.

York first mortgage may take you past retirement age. But as a change

:53:05.:53:08.

we are seeing. We feel that financial services and lenders need

:53:09.:53:13.

to adapt to that change. Do you get many older people asking for

:53:14.:53:16.

mortgages? You various reasons. Some would like to support their

:53:17.:53:24.

grandchildren, many may wish to go on the holiday of a lifetime all

we may see some rain in the south-west on Saturday. Plenty of

stuff happening in the newspapers today. We are talking about the ten

and the man from the Cambridge as for ?1.3 million over topless

pictures of the Duchess of Kent. On the Telegraph, many newspapers have

photos from the netball as well. And it's worth having a look at some of

:17:45.:17:49.

the extraordinary outfits. Their main story is about diesel drivers

being offered compensation to encourage them to scrap or retrofit

:17:54.:18:00.

polluting vehicles. They are also talking about the medication story

we mentioned in our news bulletin. And plenty of pictures of the Prime

Minister eating chips on the trail yesterday. A funny tweet from Ed

Miliband who had a situation with a bacon sandwich. He sent a tweet

saying that he and three is a need to talk. Generally, eating in public

with a camera around is deadly. It is never good. And mentioned

earlier, there is no source on those no catch up. This needs a full

:18:33.:18:40.

investigation, I believe. And here we have another picture from the Met

gala. And they also talk about Brexit, being a unable to lead

:18:44.:18:54.

Brexit talks. I'm referring to -- Theresa May refers to itself as a

:18:55.:19:00.

bloody difficult woman. And also issues with a pound coin. This one

he has no middle. We are trying to get hold of the Royal Mint if they

:19:05.:19:09.

can comment on that. You could wear as a necklace. A little like mine,

:19:10.:19:19.

strangely. And I know you were discussing pound coins earlier but

:19:20.:19:25.

pounds for Sainsbury's? Yes, their results came out in the last few

:19:26.:19:28.

minutes on their profits have fallen, fallen 8.2% they are still

:19:29.:19:34.

making up some money but, interestingly, the profits have

:19:35.:19:37.

fallen for the third year in a row. Obviously with all of this there are

:19:38.:19:41.

many numbers and analysis about why and they speak about the challenging

:19:42.:19:45.

environment at the moment saying that because the value of the pound

Scores of athletes could be stripped of their world records under

:39:39.:39:43.

your world records would not stand. How do you feel? Good morning.

:39:44.:39:46.

Pretty frustrated about the whole decision procedure. I think they

:39:47.:39:53.

kind of nullified the whole of my career. My personal best is a world

:39:54.:39:58.

record, correct. But if they remove that off the record books, that

:39:59.:40:02.

means they literally wiped out a huge part of my career. Can you

:40:03.:40:06.

understand where they are coming from? They say they need to make

:40:07.:40:11.

this more believable. Anyone listening on the radio and watching

:40:12.:40:15.

needs to be able to measure that against this. To do that, we need to

:40:16.:40:20.

start from scratch. Does that make it a valid argument at all? No. A

:40:21.:40:26.

simple answer. What we tried to do was convinced the general public

:40:27.:40:29.

that athletics is clear. The best way we can do that is have a real

:40:30.:40:34.

stringent doping test procedure that everyone is confident with. I think

:40:35.:40:41.

to really put us all in the same category as everyone else banned

:40:42.:40:56.

from taking drugs and removing medals etc from them, it is harsh to

:40:57.:41:00.

those clean like myself. Do you feel clean athletes are being punished?

:41:01.:41:03.

Absolutely. On reflection, I think of my whole career, I have said this

:41:04.:41:07.

in the interview just recently, if you take away my personal best of

:41:08.:41:11.

12.91, which I set at the World Championships, a European record,

:41:12.:41:17.

and have a gold medal and no time to go with that particular gold medal

:41:18.:41:20.

at the championships, that is ridiculous. I heard you discussing

:41:21.:41:27.

this on the radio yesterday with Steve. It was really well

:41:28.:41:34.

articulated. Let us say we wipe the slate clean and in a year's time

:41:35.:41:38.

they break a record and then five years down the line they are found

:41:39.:41:43.

to have cheated and taken drugs. Do we wipe the slate clean again? It

:41:44.:41:56.

almost removes timings and distances from a sport about breaking distance

:41:57.:41:59.

and time. Exactly. It is run on history. Looking back at

:42:00.:42:02.

performances, they are of the market or the next generation to try to

:42:03.:42:06.

achieve. You can see quite clearly if someone is positive they want to

:42:07.:42:11.

do this, they will have to reset everything. If you want confidence,

:42:12.:42:17.

this is a farcical way to do it. 2005 is when they are talking about

:42:18.:42:21.

it. Blood and urine have only been stored since 2005. How was drug

:42:22.:42:26.

testing like back then? Very regular. I even had blood tests as

:42:27.:42:33.

well to make sure I was a clean athlete. It wasn't anything unusual

:42:34.:42:39.

or dissimilar. They are saying they have not got the ability to check

:42:40.:42:46.

thoroughly. What was the point of those tests in the past? Before any

:42:47.:42:49.

championships you are tested randomly and at events. I can't see

:42:50.:42:54.

how they would have all my documents and how they could look and say,

:42:55.:42:58.

well, we need to remove these records because we are not sure he

:42:59.:43:02.

was clean. What statement is that? If this is not the way to get

:43:03.:43:06.

confidence back in the sport, what would you suggest they should be

:43:07.:43:10.

doing? How can they recreate that? Is it possible? I am not sure what

:43:11.:43:16.

the real answer is to that to get the general public to believe in

:43:17.:43:21.

performances. I am a purist in the world of athletics. I love my sport.

:43:22.:43:26.

So when I look at an event, if I look at times in performances, I

:43:27.:43:31.

never really think of it as dubious in any sense. I just marvel at what

:43:32.:43:34.

the women being is doing. Perhaps, you know, I am sitting in the wrong

place. -- the human being. I just enjoy athletics. You are still a

what recordholder. 1994. An amazing time to hold it. When you see people

:43:51.:43:56.

doing the 60 metres, do you think, go on, beat me. Or do you not want

:43:57.:44:13.

it? No, I don't want them to beat it. I bite my nails every indoor

:44:14.:44:20.

season. You must have been flying on that day. Great to hear from you.

:44:21.:44:28.

Thank you. We had a pundit in the studio who used to hold the record.

:45:26.:45:30.

to begin the day on the satellite picture. However the cloud will

:45:31.:45:34.

build from the east through the day and drift westwards, eradicating

:45:35.:45:37.

that sunshine and the rain will become patchy and it will be breezy

:45:38.:45:44.

so the north and the west will see the lion's share once again of the

:45:45.:45:47.

sunshine as we head through the afternoon. Bye for o'clock, western

:45:48.:45:52.

parts of Wales will be film as. The temperature reaching 16 Celsius. For

:45:53.:45:57.

Northern Ireland, you will start chilly but it will be sunny. A

:45:58.:46:01.

similar story for Scotland with temperatures yesterday reaching 21,

:46:02.:46:06.

making it the warmest day of this year so far. Today, possibly

:46:07.:46:12.

reaching 19. Chilly start over in the west. -- east. Look at the cloud

:46:13.:46:18.

builds as we go through the day across the Pennines at, down towards

:46:19.:46:23.

the south coast. Some patchy rain around and as we drift further with

:46:24.:46:28.

the cloud also builds, the south Westies bright but not immune to

:46:29.:46:31.

build shower. Three evening and overnight we hang on to this breeze.

:46:32.:46:39.

Still cloudy, still wish ours. Especially Scotland and Northern

:46:40.:46:42.

Ireland. They will see clear skies and after dark that but you will

:46:43.:46:45.

drop quickly. Like this morning, we could well see a touch of frost. It

:46:46.:46:50.

means that tomorrow we will have some sunshine from the word go.

:46:51.:46:53.

Still where we have cloud there will be a couple showers but we do have a

:46:54.:46:58.

keen breeze. That would help break up the cloud but if you were in the

:46:59.:47:02.

breeze that will feel cold, particularly in the eastern coastal

:47:03.:47:05.

counties and particularly if you are stuck under cloud and showers. So,

:47:06.:47:09.

once again, as we move north this is where we will see the line sharer of

:47:10.:47:15.

the sunshine. Parts of south-west England will also see some of that.

:47:16.:47:19.

A lot are clad in the south on Friday, brighter skies were sunshine

:47:20.:47:23.

further north. Still greeted with temperatures between ten and 15

:47:24.:47:27.

Celsius. Then as we head on into the weekend, the high pressure that has

:47:28.:47:30.

been dominating our weather tends to drift towards Iceland. That is

:47:31.:47:33.

salient because the air comes in a clockwise direction around it so

:47:34.:47:38.

that we will pull more of an northerly component into our weather

:47:39.:47:42.

which means it will fill cooler but mostly dry. There is a risk we could

:47:43.:47:46.

see some rain, just a risk, into the south-west during the course of

:47:47.:47:49.

Saturday but from the thick cloud you can see some odd showers. So,

:47:50.:47:53.

really, with the next two days in the bulk of the UK remains fairly

:47:54.:47:55.

benign. Use a fairly benign. We will take

:47:56.:48:02.

that. Thank you, Carol. We were talking this morning about Wales.

:48:03.:48:06.

One of the last call Wales in the UK was contaminated with shocking

:48:07.:48:09.

levels of the top click Cameron call. The animal was cold Lulu and

:48:10.:48:15.

she was found damp last year. Test revealed her body contained among

:48:16.:48:20.

the highest level ever recorded of the chemical banned since the 1970s.

:48:21.:48:24.

There are fears that others in her POD could also be affected.

:48:25.:48:31.

They are the UK's last killer whales.

:48:32.:48:33.

Found off the west Coast of Scotland, today this pod has

:48:34.:48:36.

Lulu was found dead on the shores of the Inner Hebrides.

:48:37.:48:45.

She had been caught up in fishing line.

:48:46.:48:48.

So, this is Lulu's skull, this is the head.

:48:49.:48:52.

Her skeleton is now stored at the National Museum Scotland.

:48:53.:48:55.

Tests showed she was heavily contaminated with man-made

:48:56.:48:59.

The levels that we found in Lulu were 20 times higher than the levels

:49:00.:49:05.

that we would expect in cetaceans that were not suffering any

:49:06.:49:08.

That puts her as one of the most contaminated animals on the planet.

:49:09.:49:15.

In killer whales the chemicals can stop the animals from bearing young.

:49:16.:49:20.

They harm the immune system and also the brain.

:49:21.:49:23.

One theory is the PCBs severely impaired her intelligence,

:49:24.:49:25.

perhaps leading to her deadly entanglement in the fishing nets.

:49:26.:49:35.

Here in the laboratory, the effect of heat is shown...

:49:36.:49:38.

PCBs was once a man-made wonder chemical, used in everything

:49:39.:49:41.

It was later discovered that they were toxic

:49:42.:49:48.

and from the 1970s a series of bans around the world

:49:49.:49:51.

But they have stuck around, especially in landfill sites that

:49:52.:49:58.

contain the materials they were once used in.

:49:59.:50:02.

Today the PCB problem lives on, especially in our oceans.

:50:03.:50:04.

The chemicals are long-lasting and don't break down easily.

:50:05.:50:10.

There is an estimated million tons of the material in Europe,

:50:11.:50:15.

this is coming from the land into the sea and on into

:50:16.:50:19.

Some scientists say more needs to be done to clear PCBs

:50:20.:50:27.

from the environment but UK officials say levels are declining.

:50:28.:50:32.

The controls we have in place is working.

:50:33.:50:34.

It is just that they take a very long time to disappear

:50:35.:50:37.

and they are probably disappearing into the sediment at the bottom

:50:38.:50:40.

of the sea, and occasionally when that sediment is stirred up it

:50:41.:50:44.

So it will take a very long time to disappear completely.

:50:45.:50:53.

PCBs are a global concern but with so few killer whales left

:50:54.:50:56.

in the UK it is a problem that is sharply felt.

:50:57.:50:59.

It is likely the rest of Lulu's pod is also heavily contaminated,

:51:00.:51:03.

It is such a shame because they are beautiful animals. It is down 751.

:51:04.:51:27.

We were talking earlier with Steff about the results from Sainsbury's.

:51:28.:51:32.

Let me give you some FAQ they are our second biggest supermarket and

:51:33.:51:39.

employ around 160,000 people. Over 1200 stalls. This morning it was

:51:40.:51:45.

reported an 8.2% fall in profit to ?503 million for the year to the end

:51:46.:51:49.

of March. They still make muggy but profits fall. We will speak now to

:51:50.:51:53.

the chief executive. Good morning. So why is there a fall in profits?

:51:54.:52:02.

The headline is down about 1% year-on-year of ?581 million but we

:52:03.:52:05.

operate one of the most competitive grocery markets in the world and our

:52:06.:52:10.

job is to do a great job week in and week out serving our customers. We

:52:11.:52:13.

made some interesting choices during the course of the year. For instance

:52:14.:52:17.

we are quite home retail group. The Argos business, will allow us to

:52:18.:52:22.

adapt our business to a very changing customer environment.

:52:23.:52:25.

Obviously, you know we speak about different profit figures now because

:52:26.:52:28.

the results are a lot of numbers within your statistics. Looking at

:52:29.:52:31.

why profits have fallen and the coast pressures you have at the

:52:32.:52:36.

moment, are we going to see prices having to go up in your stores? We

:52:37.:52:40.

have done a brilliant job, as you said, reducing the impact of the

:52:41.:52:44.

currency movements on our customers. We have worked with our suppliers

:52:45.:52:50.

and reduce our cost so we have seen a minor uptick in inflation we have

:52:51.:52:54.

done a good job and will continue to go to good job of serving our

:52:55.:52:58.

customers and not passing on the price increases that we see coming

:52:59.:53:02.

through. Of course, more widely, we could improve the quality of the

:53:03.:53:07.

product we sell. We can adapt our business to that changing customer

:53:08.:53:10.

environment and, also, with the acquisition of the home retail group

:53:11.:53:13.

we have the opportunity of growing up clothing and general merchandise

:53:14.:53:16.

business. It is a challenging market and there is no doubting that and it

:53:17.:53:20.

has been probably always will be. You say working with suppliers. Are

:53:21.:53:25.

you squeezing them? No, we were closely with them and we have good

:53:26.:53:28.

relationships. There are clearly things we can do together, beat

:53:29.:53:32.

looking at the source of the products we buy, because within our

:53:33.:53:36.

supply chain, to help mitigate the coast. And, indeed, the big

:53:37.:53:39.

initiatives we ever had in the year is to reduce waste in our business

:53:40.:53:43.

and as a result of managing our supply chain with finesse, together

:53:44.:53:46.

we can reduce waste and therefore reduce our cost and therefore

:53:47.:53:50.

mitigate any price pressures with our customers. Just looking ahead in

:53:51.:53:55.

the future, obviously you have spoken about it being a challenging

:53:56.:53:58.

environment. What difference do you think it will make to the average

:53:59.:54:05.

family who is out shopping? What will they see when prices inevitably

:54:06.:54:10.

go up? Week in, week out, as I say we do our best to make sure we

:54:11.:54:13.

mitigate any price increases and our job is to make sure we do not pass

:54:14.:54:18.

on changes to our customers. But you will eventually have to pass on

:54:19.:54:21.

some? There has been an uptick in but that is against the backdrop of

:54:22.:54:25.

prices falling by 4% in the last couple of years. Food is still

:54:26.:54:31.

cheaper than today that was a few years ago and who knows what will

:54:32.:54:34.

happen in the future? Is difficult to predict. Last year, like many

:54:35.:54:38.

things changed and over the next year many other things will also

:54:39.:54:42.

change. My job is to do a brilliant job and serve our customers with

:54:43.:54:45.

great quality food and broaden the range was within our supermarkets

:54:46.:54:49.

and adapt our business to a changing environment where online is becoming

:54:50.:54:53.

an increasingly important part. Looking at your market share, it is

:54:54.:54:59.

around 16% at the moment, still well kind of go. You see a day when you

:55:00.:55:03.

will catch up with them? I think that is the day long time coming

:55:04.:55:07.

but, of course, the acquisition of the home retail group at a lot to

:55:08.:55:11.

our top line. And, actually, our market share in business performance

:55:12.:55:15.

has been resilient, not just in the last year in the last five years. We

:55:16.:55:19.

have managed to maintain a market share, broadly speaking, of the

:55:20.:55:22.

time. We also have opportunity of growth in the future. We are

:55:23.:55:25.

building a very different business to adapt to a changing customer 's

:55:26.:55:27.

needs. Sainsbury results out this morning

:55:28.:55:38.

and profits announced by Sainsbury. You are watching Breakfast with BBC

:55:39.:55:43.

News. Still to come this morning, if you are watching us on a mobile or a

:55:44.:55:47.

tablet using some four G, how good is your signal? We will find out

:55:48.:55:54.

why, and where you live affects how quickly your device

:55:55.:59:15.

Hello, this is Breakfast, with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker.

:59:16.:59:54.

The general election campaign officially begins today.

:59:55.:59:57.

The Queen will meet Theresa May to mark

:59:58.:59:59.

the dissolution of the shortest parliament since 1974.

:00:00.:00:11.

Good morning. It's Wednesday, 3rd May.

:00:12.:00:21.

Also this morning, it's ten years since the disappearance

:00:22.:00:23.

This is the apartment block in Praia da Luz where Madeleine McCann was

:00:24.:00:34.

last seen. Today, a witness tells Breakfast that she saw a woman

:00:35.:00:38.

acting suspiciously and a speeding car on the night the toddler

:00:39.:00:40.

vanished. Britain's second biggest supermarket

:00:41.:00:46.

has reported a fall in profits I've been talking to

:00:47.:00:48.

the boss about why. Another hat-trick from Real's

:00:49.:00:52.

superstar sets them on course And this is Mark what Guinness

:00:53.:01:05.

former Chief-of-Staff of the Irish Republican Army. Allegedly.

:01:06.:01:11.

Actor Timothy Spall tells us about playing the Rev Ian Paisley

:01:12.:01:13.

in a film about an unlikely friendship that helped pave the way

:01:14.:01:16.

Hopefully it's a lovely day where you are this morning.

:01:17.:01:23.

It certainly is outside our studio here.

:01:24.:01:25.

A chilly start, but in the sunshine the temperature will pick up

:01:26.:01:37.

quickly. The sunniest skies today been across Northern England and

:01:38.:01:39.

Scotland and Northern Ireland. For the rest of England and Wales,

:01:40.:01:42.

although some of us are off to a bright start, there is a fair bit of

:01:43.:01:45.

cloud around and it will develop further producing a few showers here

:01:46.:01:49.

and there in a chilly breeze, but I'll have more details in 15

:01:50.:01:50.

minutes. Theresa May will visit

:01:51.:01:55.

Buckingham Palace today, for an audience with the Queen,

:01:56.:01:59.

to mark the dissolution It signals the official start

:02:00.:02:01.

of the general election campaign and just after midnight all seats

:02:02.:02:05.

in the House of Commons Attention turns to the local

:02:06.:02:08.

elections tomorrow with crucial votes for 34 English councils,

:02:09.:02:12.

all Scottish and Welsh councils as well as a number

:02:13.:02:16.

of local authority mayors. The deadline to register to vote

:02:17.:02:20.

in the general election is 22nd May Our Political Correspondent Ben

:02:21.:02:23.

Wright is in Westminster. Officially the gun may have sounded,

:02:24.:02:40.

but they have been running for a while? Good morning, Dan. We have

:02:41.:02:45.

had a few weeks of campaigning and the general election campaign gets

:02:46.:02:48.

going. The MPs have left Westminster and gone back to constituencies to

:02:49.:02:52.

fight for their parties and to battle for their jobs. The two main

:02:53.:02:58.

parties are making policy announcements today or campaign

:02:59.:03:00.

announcements. Labour going on what they think is one of their strongest

:03:01.:03:04.

hands, the NHS, saying if they win the election on 8th June they will

:03:05.:03:08.

pause the restructuring of Health Services in England. It's a

:03:09.:03:13.

controversial issue in many seats and Labour are saying they will

:03:14.:03:16.

pause all that restructuring around A and other services. The

:03:17.:03:19.

Conservatives going for where they think Labour are weakest, on the

:03:20.:03:23.

issue of economic credibility. They have collated the things that Labour

:03:24.:03:25.

have been saying over the last couple of years about the various

:03:26.:03:28.

things they'd like to spend money on and the Tories are launching a

:03:29.:03:32.

poster campaign today arguing if Labour win there will be a ?45

:03:33.:03:36.

billion black hole in their sums, that's the bill the taxpayers will

:03:37.:03:39.

have to pay for it all. Labour's response, they haven't announced

:03:40.:03:42.

anything yet in the manifesto, they will cost it all and we will see

:03:43.:03:46.

that the sums do add up. These are the skirmishes we will see today.

:03:47.:03:50.

Over in Brussels, Ben, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator will be

:03:51.:03:53.

talking today. What sort of things are we listening out for there? Yes,

:03:54.:03:59.

that's right. He is leading the talks for the EU or will do when

:04:00.:04:02.

they begin after the general election. And he's going to be

:04:03.:04:08.

setting out the fact that he now has a mandate from the 27 EU countries

:04:09.:04:13.

to go and negotiate on their behalf. He'll set out we think some of his

:04:14.:04:17.

priorities, how he thinks the talks should be structured. We got a sense

:04:18.:04:20.

last week of real disagreements already between the UK and the EU.

:04:21.:04:25.

You will remember that very divisive sounding dinner that was reported in

:04:26.:04:29.

the German press. One of the key issues is money, the Brexit bill

:04:30.:04:32.

that Britain will have to pay. There is a report in the Financial Times

:04:33.:04:34.

today suggesting that the exit bill for Britain could be as much as 100

:04:35.:04:38.

billion euros. That's what the EU are going to ask for. Now, the

:04:39.:04:42.

Brexit secretary here, David Davis, has said this morning that the UK

:04:43.:04:47.

aren't going to pay that, but this will be one of the most,

:04:48.:04:50.

controversial, sensitive part of the Brexit negotiations.

:04:51.:04:56.

Detectives have been given more time to question three young women

:04:57.:04:59.

arrested on suspicion of terror offences.

:05:00.:05:01.

The three, two aged 18, and one 19, were detained

:05:02.:05:04.

The operation was linked to a raid in north-west London last week,

:05:05.:05:11.

during which another woman was shot and wounded by police.

:05:12.:05:19.

The England footballer Aaron Lennon is reported to have been detained

:05:20.:05:21.

The 30-year-old Premier League star was taken to hospital for assessment

:05:22.:05:26.

The England footballer Aaron Lennon is reported to have been detained

:05:27.:05:31.

amid concerns for his welfare after police found him near the side

:05:32.:05:33.

His club Everton say they are supporting Lennon

:05:34.:05:37.

as he receives treatment for a stress-related illness.

:05:38.:05:39.

They added that his family has asked privacy at this time.

:05:40.:05:42.

Lennon's representative, Base Soccer Agency, also tweeted

:05:43.:05:43.

that their support to the winger, who joined Everton

An apparent suicide bombing has targeted a convoy of armoured

:05:46.:05:56.

personnel carriers of the Nato-led mission in the Afghan

:05:57.:05:59.

The Interior Ministry says at least eight people were killed and more

:06:00.:06:04.

One of the military vehicles was severely damaged,

:06:05.:06:07.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are said to be claiming compensation

:06:08.:06:15.

over the publication of topless pictures of Catherine.

:06:16.:06:18.

Prince William is said to be seeking ?1.3 million in damages.

:06:19.:06:21.

The photos were taken while the couple were holidaying

:06:22.:06:23.

at a private chateau in the south of France.

:06:24.:06:27.

Six people have gone on trial over the publication.

:06:28.:06:31.

New research suggests that people who take statins are reporting

:06:32.:06:35.

side-effects that are not caused by the cholesterol-lowering drugs.

:06:36.:06:42.

Scientists blame a psychological phenomenon where those told

:06:43.:06:45.

about the possible side-effects are more likely to develop them,

:06:46.:06:48.

The authors of the research say that some people are being put off

:06:49.:06:52.

taking the medication, potentially putting lives at risk.

:06:53.:06:54.

The patients who have had heart attacks or who have had strokes

:06:55.:06:57.

who are at very high risk of having another stroke or heart attack

:06:58.:07:02.

and they benefit considerably from statins and if they stop taking

:07:03.:07:05.

them or the doctors don't prescribe them because they're worried

:07:06.:07:08.

about side-effects then they remain at very, very high risk and they're

:07:09.:07:11.

Smartphone users in the UK can only get a 4G connection, on average,

:07:12.:07:22.

two-thirds of the time according to a study by the

:07:23.:07:24.

Coverage of the latest generation of mobile technology

:07:25.:07:28.

Ofcom has told mobile firms that 98% of homes must get 4G

:07:29.:07:39.

Let us know about what reception you get and how well it works. We will

:07:40.:07:48.

be talking about this later on. We will be talking about 5G as well.

:07:49.:07:52.

Lots of people saying in one place it works and then you go a mile down

:07:53.:07:56.

the road and then it doesn't. So we'll be asking why that might be

:07:57.:08:02.

happening. I can't think of North Norfolk without thinking of Alan

:08:03.:08:08.

Partridge! Someone else saying they get 4G perfectly in Newport, but

:08:09.:08:11.

they can't get wi-fi! Answers on that.

:08:12.:08:16.

A surfer who was rescued after spending 32 hours in the sea

:08:17.:08:18.

has thanked the "heroes" who saved him.

:08:19.:08:26.

You can see him being picked up on his surf board.

:08:27.:08:38.

He was picked up by a coastguard helicopter 13 mills from the Argyll

:08:39.:08:40.

coast. The surf board seems to have been

:08:41.:08:50.

left after saving his life. A judge in San Francisco will decide

:08:51.:08:56.

later today if the taxi-hailing app Uber must stop developing parts

:08:57.:08:59.

of its new self-driving car. The company has been accused

:09:00.:09:02.

of stealing technology Uber is, of course, no

:09:03.:09:04.

stranger to a courtroom. But its latest opponents are perhaps

:09:05.:09:11.

its most formidable so far. Waymo is a self-driving car

:09:12.:09:15.

firm owned by Alphabet, Waymo has accused two former

:09:16.:09:17.

employees of stealing self driving technology by downloading 14,000

:09:18.:09:32.

files related to the design of the system that helps the cars

using the disputed technology. It could men Uber's new self-driving

a major setback for Uber as it tries to be the first company making

commercial self-driving cars However, Uber denies using any

:10:08.:10:09.

of Google's technology, saying the company are just trying

:10:10.:10:14.

to stifle independent innovation. You are watching Breakfast. How do

:10:15.:10:25.

you feel about driverless cars? I would like one, but I feel nervous.

:10:26.:10:30.

And you? I like driving. I can see the benefits of it.

:10:31.:10:36.

It is ten years to the day that three-year-old Madeleine McCann went

:10:37.:10:39.

missing from a holiday apartment in the Portuguese village

:10:40.:10:41.

It's a case that drew attention from around

:10:42.:10:47.

the world and cast a shadow on the Algarve resort.

:10:48.:10:49.

Jon Kay is there for us this morning.

:10:50.:10:51.

Good morning, Jon. Good morning. It has become such a familiar sight

:10:52.:10:58.

hasn't it? This is the apartment block where Madeleine McCann was

:10:59.:11:01.

last seen. Ten years ago tonight, her mum Kate walked up from the

:11:02.:11:05.

restaurant to the block here where they were staying and discovered

:11:06.:11:08.

that her young daughter had vanished and here we are a decade later. We

:11:09.:11:12.

don't really know, nobody knows it seems, much more than that. Do we?

:11:13.:11:17.

We don't know, despite all the appeals, all the images, everything

:11:18.:11:21.

that's been written, all the money that's been spent on investigations,

:11:22.:11:25.

we don't know how she left here, we don't know who she was with, and we

:11:26.:11:27.

still don't know where she is now. Ten years since

:11:28.:11:33.

everything changed here. Ten years since a little girl

:11:34.:11:40.

vanished on a holiday It's unbelievable that nothing,

:11:41.:11:42.

there has been nothing. They haven't found the child,

:11:43.:11:50.

they have not found anything. Jenny Murat remembers it

:11:51.:11:57.

like it was yesterday. She only lives a few

:11:58.:11:59.

yards from the block Back then she set up a stall

:12:00.:12:01.

outside, appealing for information. She never imagined that the case

:12:02.:12:10.

would still be unsolved a decade on. Everything you look at and you see

:12:11.:12:13.

all around you is... It connects somehow to the fact that

:12:14.:12:19.

a little girl disappeared. This week it has been claimed that

:12:20.:12:24.

on the night Madeleine disappeared a mystery woman was seen outside

:12:25.:12:31.

the family's apartment. Jenny told me she saw this woman,

:12:32.:12:36.

who is now reported to be a significant part

:12:37.:12:39.

of the investigation. I noticed her and she looked

:12:40.:12:46.

as if she was trying to hide. I remember she was wearing

:12:47.:12:49.

a plum coloured top. For the first time,

:12:50.:12:51.

Jenny has also told us about a car she saw that night,

:12:52.:12:54.

speeding towards the McCann's apartment, heading the wrong way

:12:55.:12:59.

down a one-way street. It was one of the small cars,

:13:00.:13:07.

like a rental car, the normal We just looked at each other

:13:08.:13:10.

and I think he had a very Ten years of

:13:11.:13:22.

unprecedented publicity. It HAS had a huge impact

:13:23.:13:32.

on my personality... Jenny's son Robert was to be named

:13:33.:13:45.

a suspect in the case. A decade on, his name may have been

:13:46.:13:52.

cleared but he still cannot I'd like to know the

:13:53.:13:54.

truth, not theories. I just want to know

:13:55.:13:59.

why that was the case. It did not only lead

:14:00.:14:01.

to me being destroyed, it led to my whole family

:14:02.:14:04.

being destroyed and affected And you are adamant that

:14:05.:14:06.

you were not there that night? Ten years ago this was just

:14:07.:14:18.

another sleepy village. Now it is the place where

:14:19.:14:23.

Madeleine disappeared. You might remember at the time that

:14:24.:14:33.

after madeleine vanished from this apartment block her family used to

:14:34.:14:37.

walk down to a little church in the harbour area in Praia da Luz to pray

:14:38.:14:42.

and seek some kind of solace. Tonight, there will be a service in

:14:43.:14:47.

that church for local people, for holiday-makers, for ex-pats who live

:14:48.:14:51.

here to remember madeleine, but not just to remember madeleine, they're

:14:52.:14:54.

conscious about the bigger picture. So they want to remember madeleine

:14:55.:14:58.

and all missing children, all missing people.

:14:59.:15:02.

STUDIO: Jon, thank you very much indeed, give us an indication, you

:15:03.:15:06.

talked about it being ten years on. Is it still having an impact there,

:15:07.:15:12.

do you think? Absolutely. I mean this is a tourist resort. The

:15:13.:15:17.

economy here relies on its image and on people turning up and people do

:15:18.:15:21.

still turn up. It's quiet here this week, but you know, it's still a

:15:22.:15:25.

busy tourist resort, but people here know that the shadow of this

:15:26.:15:32.

investigation, this case, still is cast over this entire resort and

:15:33.:15:36.

people, some of them are angry and frustrated by that. They wished this

:15:37.:15:40.

case was solved, they wished the whole investigation was over. They

:15:41.:15:44.

wished the police didn't turn up and dig like they did a couple of years

:15:45.:15:48.

in great numbers and they wish that the media didn't turn up and point

:15:49.:15:54.

cameras at this block. There is an acceptance here that people want it

:15:55.:15:57.

to be solved and they know they won't be out of the spotlight until

:15:58.:16:01.

it is solved hopefully one day. Jon Kay in Praia da Luz, thank you.

:16:02.:16:09.

Carol is whether is once again, a beautiful picture behind you.

:16:10.:16:16.

This one from our weather watcher in London, Twickenham. A lot of cloud

:16:17.:16:25.

around in London. Compared to what is happening in Wales, Colwyn Bay,

:16:26.:16:29.

lovely and sunny. Temperatures starting to pick up. For most of us

:16:30.:16:32.

will be mainly dry. You could replace this morning with today.

:16:33.:16:36.

There are however some showers and rain coming in on this bank of cloud

:16:37.:16:39.

across parts of the south-east. Elsewhere you can see where we have

:16:40.:16:43.

some cloud, now the sun is updated starting to melt away in the north.

:16:44.:16:47.

Here is where we will see the lion's share of the sunshine. In the south,

:16:48.:16:51.

we have a bit more cloud, the breeze will be picking up, the showers

:16:52.:16:55.

breaking up as we go through the course of the day. McKelvey cloud

:16:56.:16:59.

advances over in the direction of Wales south-east England. As we get

:17:00.:17:03.

to the middle of the afternoon there will still be some sunshine across

:17:04.:17:06.

north west Wales but the cloud will help out across the rest of Wales.

:17:07.:17:10.

For Northern Ireland after a chilly start, the sun comes out, and it

:17:11.:17:15.

will remain with us through the course of the day, as it will

:17:16.:17:19.

yesterday. -- as it will through the rest of the day. -- as it will to

:17:20.:17:25.

Scotland. For northern England, a beautiful afternoon and morning for

:17:26.:17:29.

you as well. As we slipped down into the Midlands, East Anglia, Essex and

:17:30.:17:33.

Kent, back under this cloud, some patchy rain and a few showers. He

:17:34.:17:38.

cloud building as we head towards the south-west. You can see the odd

:17:39.:17:41.

shower but equally there will be some brightness. Through the evening

:17:42.:17:46.

and overnight we hang into the keen breeze, all of the cloud. Some

:17:47.:17:51.

showers dotted around the stock clear skies across Scotland and also

:17:52.:17:54.

Northern Ireland means that quite quickly the temperature will drop.

:17:55.:18:01.

Rather like the morning just gone. As we had on through tomorrow, we

:18:02.:18:06.

will hang on to the sunshine across much of Scotland, Northern Ireland,

:18:07.:18:09.

northern England and North Wales. A bit more cloud across southern

:18:10.:18:12.

counties but with this keen breeze it will break up that cloud so we

:18:13.:18:16.

will see some brightness, but the cloud will be thick enough for the

:18:17.:18:20.

odd shower. Like today, if you are wondering down the east coast of all

:18:21.:18:24.

feel cold a few are exposed to the north-easterly wind. As we move into

:18:25.:18:28.

Friday, the South hanging onto the cloud again. Still quite breezy,

:18:29.:18:32.

coming from a chilly direction. Move further north and we are back in the

:18:33.:18:35.

sunny skies stop the lower temperatures will always be in the

:18:36.:18:39.

east, looking at ten to about 12. Higher temperatures as we drift

:18:40.:18:44.

further west. Particularly in the sunshine. As we move from Friday to

:18:45.:18:47.

Saturday, there is a weather front not too far away from the

:18:48.:18:51.

south-west. It might not be its exact positioning, it could move

:18:52.:18:54.

away, but a lot of dry weather for much of the UK this weekend as hired

:18:55.:18:58.

pressure drifts towards Iceland now, the wind direction will turn to more

:18:59.:19:04.

of a north-easterly, so it will still be pretty cool. No heatwave in

:19:05.:19:12.

prospect. Weekley thank you, we will see you in half an hour.

:19:13.:19:15.

In the last hour, Sainsburys has reported a fall in profits.

:19:16.:19:18.

Steph has been speaking to the boss trying to explain it. Sainsbury

:19:19.:19:26.

still making lots of money, still Britain's second biggest

:19:27.:19:30.

supermarket, they made something like ?503 million in the end of

:19:31.:19:35.

March was that it is the third year in a row that profits have fallen at

:19:36.:19:38.

the supermarket so, and earlier when I was talking to the was saying how

:19:39.:19:41.

much of a challenging environment it was. We work very closely with our

:19:42.:19:46.

suppliers and have very good relationships with them but there

:19:47.:19:49.

are clearly things we can do together, whether it is looking at

:19:50.:19:54.

the things we buy, to help mitigate the costs. Our job is to make sure

:19:55.:19:58.

we don't pass on changes... But you are going to have to pass on some

:19:59.:20:03.

command you? There has been a minor take-up in inflation but that is

:20:04.:20:07.

against a backdrop where prices have fallen in the last couple of years,

:20:08.:20:10.

so food is still substantially cheaper today than it is a couple of

:20:11.:20:15.

years ago. Who knows what will happen in the future? Very difficult

:20:16.:20:17.

to predict. In the last couple of years lots of things have changed

:20:18.:20:21.

and I suspect in the next year lots of other things will change. He

:20:22.:20:25.

didn't want to commit to the fact that prices might go up, but it

:20:26.:20:29.

sounds quite inevitable really, given the fact the Valley of the

:20:30.:20:34.

pound has fallen and it cost is more to import and also with the price of

:20:35.:20:37.

the oil as well, which put a lot of pressure on getting all those goods

:20:38.:20:42.

transported around. You will remember Sainsbury's bought Argos

:20:43.:20:46.

about a year ago, paid ?1.4 billion, and Argos has been doing pretty well

:20:47.:20:49.

for them, which has helped bolster their profit too. Interesting time

:20:50.:20:55.

in the supermarkets. Thanks, Steph, see you next week. I will be back

:20:56.:21:03.

tomorrow. Do you get 4G in your house? Guess, because my hometown

:21:04.:21:11.

has the best. Top of the league. That is the big question.

:21:12.:21:15.

How reliable your smartphone connection is depends

:21:16.:21:16.

on where you live, according to the latest analysis.

:21:17.:21:19.

The consumer group, Which?, found there was a huge variation

:21:20.:21:25.

of 4G coverage and download speeds throughout UK.

:21:26.:21:26.

The report compared the 20 biggest cities.

:21:27.:21:29.

As we said, it found that Middlesborough

:21:30.:21:34.

London was placed sixteenth on the table with 74% coverage.

:21:35.:21:40.

Research suggests users can only get a faster 4G connection

:21:41.:21:42.

So why does coverage differ so much and what is the impact?

:21:43.:21:47.

Joining us now are Technology and Marketing Expert Dan Sodergren,

:21:48.:21:49.

Morning, though. Looking at those figures, how would you describe

:21:50.:22:09.

them? It is incredibly frustrating for people, they are sending

:22:10.:22:12.

messages saying they get it in one place but not another. Why? Many

:22:13.:22:20.

factors influence it, the geography of the place, the ability to acquire

:22:21.:22:24.

suitable sites and the ability to get planning permission. But I think

:22:25.:22:30.

the important thing to emphasise, this is not a static situation. In

:22:31.:22:35.

the current cycle, the operators are investing about ?2 billion per annum

:22:36.:22:45.

in improving the coverage and capacity, so that by the end of

:22:46.:22:54.

2017, a 4G signal will be available in 98% of premises from at least one

:22:55.:23:00.

operator but probably more. And there is a big jump up, in terms of

:23:01.:23:04.

speed and what people are using their phones for, between 3G and 4G.

:23:05.:23:09.

Can you give us an idea of what that jump would be? From a human

:23:10.:23:13.

standpoint, if you were running a bath with two taps, that would be

:23:14.:23:17.

3G, if you were running it with a taps, it would be 4G. It tends to

:23:18.:23:21.

drain your battery life a bit but that is not your guys fault. It is

:23:22.:23:27.

alleged in point that it would be 98% coverage but it is the potential

:23:28.:23:30.

for that coverage. They promised this a long time ago, about four

:23:31.:23:34.

years ago we were thinking the same kind of thing. It is not perfect. I

:23:35.:23:38.

think not only do these guys need to be putting a bit more money in. I

:23:39.:23:42.

know 2 billion sounds like a lot but we should be investing in this, it

:23:43.:23:45.

is very important, almost as important as water. It is what will

:23:46.:23:50.

be powering the next Industrial Revolution. Mobile communication is

:23:51.:23:55.

important personally, and privately for businesses. We use our phones

:23:56.:23:58.

are much more than we used to, more than we used desktops to go on the

:23:59.:24:03.

internet. For example, when me and my wife got married eight years ago,

:24:04.:24:07.

we had little picture cameras we gave out, the wind of things. Now at

:24:08.:24:13.

my brother's wedding this weekend, it will be all on Facebook live

:24:14.:24:20.

streaming. This is a huge amount of data. 90% of the world's data has

:24:21.:24:24.

been created in the last two years. Think about that. These guys have a

:24:25.:24:28.

hell of a job on but I think they should be doing more. The pressure

:24:29.:24:34.

is on! Your response to that? We absolutely acknowledge that, and we

:24:35.:24:38.

are doing more come and we need to work, as the report also highlights,

:24:39.:24:42.

more closely with government both at a national level and at a local

:24:43.:24:45.

level, because it is very important we can get sites through the

:24:46.:24:52.

planning process, that local development plans acknowledge the

:24:53.:24:56.

importance of mobile coverage and have a very pro-mobile stance, and

:24:57.:25:01.

that we can get access to public assets. Assets owned by the state,

:25:02.:25:07.

to build out the network. As we move from the big towers and we add

:25:08.:25:12.

capacity to the network, we are increasingly using street furniture

:25:13.:25:15.

like bus stops and the sides of houses, and getting access to that

:25:16.:25:19.

sort of thing will make it much simpler. Do you think you have been

:25:20.:25:23.

caught out by the speed of development? It is perfectly true in

:25:24.:25:27.

the last seven or eight years, the demand for mobile data has gone up

:25:28.:25:34.

50 times. So we are increasing capacity, that is the response, we

:25:35.:25:38.

are increasing the geographic coverage, and upgrading from 3G the

:25:39.:25:43.

4G, so there is a lot of work, yes, it is perfectly true. We can't just

:25:44.:25:46.

blame these guys, they do make money as well, so it is not completely

:25:47.:25:50.

altruistic what they are doing but the government could make it top of

:25:51.:25:54.

the agenda. I think they really do need to. Mobile data is important.

:25:55.:26:00.

We are 54th in the tables. Globally. I don't think that is acceptable. We

:26:01.:26:04.

may be ahead of Europe, Italy, France and Germany, but we are not

:26:05.:26:07.

ahead of the rest of the globe and we have to really look at this. The

:26:08.:26:11.

next Industrial Revolution will be based on mobile connectivity.

:26:12.:26:16.

Internet of things, automated cars, all of these things will run on

:26:17.:26:18.

these networks and if they are creaking now because they are not

:26:19.:26:21.

putting the money in, who will put the cash in? I don't think we can be

:26:22.:26:28.

blamed as consumers, talking to me more of their product, because that

:26:29.:26:32.

is what they wanted us to do. It is a short amount of time, 98% by the

:26:33.:26:38.

end of 2017. Does that mean that mark in Newport in Wales, he says it

:26:39.:26:43.

is ready good. Joe says 4G signal is fine in the village in North Norfolk

:26:44.:26:46.

you go a mile away down the road of not enough to make a call. Will that

:26:47.:26:52.

mean that sort of thing will change? It is difficult to respond to that

:26:53.:27:00.

specific question. It is a never-ending task. It is like

:27:01.:27:04.

painting the Forth Road Bridge, the history of the last ten years is

:27:05.:27:11.

that we have increased the capacity, increase the capability and the

:27:12.:27:13.

geographic coverage and that will continue. It is frustrating. Lots of

:27:14.:27:18.

people said they get 4G at one table at work and they moved to the next

:27:19.:27:23.

one. There is always a cut-off point, but deep down I have to

:27:24.:27:26.

invest more money in this. Not saying sorry, Norfolk, it is

:27:27.:27:29.

unlucky. They have to put something up in Norfolk. Now news,

:27:30.:30:53.

Until then, don't forget you can stay up to date on our website.

:30:54.:30:56.

For now, though, it's time to hand you back to Louise and Dan,

:30:57.:30:59.

Hello, this is Breakfast, with Dan Walker and Louise Minchin.

:31:00.:31:05.

Theresa May will visit Buckingham Palace today

:31:06.:31:07.

for an audience with the Queen, to mark the dissolution

:31:08.:31:10.

It signals the official start of the general-election campaign,

:31:11.:31:14.

and just after midnight all seats in the House of Commons

:31:15.:31:16.

Attention turns to the local elections tomorrow, with crucial

:31:17.:31:20.

votes for 34 English councils, all Scottish and Welsh councils,

:31:21.:31:26.

as well as a number of local-authority mayors.

:31:27.:31:30.

The deadline to register to vote in the general election is May 22nd,

:31:31.:31:38.

Our Political Correspondent Ben Wright is in Westminster.

:31:39.:31:42.

Ben, today might be the official start of the campaign,

:31:43.:31:49.

but the truth is it's already well underway.

:31:50.:31:55.

There have been skirmishes for a fortnight, we have had rallies and

:31:56.:32:02.

people may have seen canvases, there have been claims and counterclaims,

:32:03.:32:05.

policy launches, but now it gets going. The Conservatives are

:32:06.:32:11.

focusing their fire on Labour and a weakness they think they have, a

:32:12.:32:15.

question around economic credibility. The Tories say that if

:32:16.:32:19.

Labour was to win the election, taxpayers would have ?45 billion

:32:20.:32:24.

black hole in their spending plans. This is David Davis.

:32:25.:32:30.

Their spending plans exceed their tax-raising plan by 45 billion black

:32:31.:32:39.

hole. That would put the economy at risk, it would undermine economic

:32:40.:32:43.

security, and that is why people should choose strong and stable

:32:44.:32:47.

leadership from Theresa May, rather than the coalition of chaos under

:32:48.:32:48.

Jeremy Corbyn. Labour say it is nonsense, and they

:32:49.:32:59.

have priorities they would like to pursue. They say the Tory sums will

:33:00.:33:05.

not add up and Labour will spell out there spending plans in their

:33:06.:33:09.

manifesto. Labour are focusing on behalf of service, if they were to

:33:10.:33:13.

win the election they would pause the reorganisation of the NHS in

:33:14.:33:16.

England. Lots of people have said that this is not the Brexit

:33:17.:33:22.

election, but there is an important man speaking in Brussels today. Yes,

the EU chief negotiator is making a speech this morning. This is a

Brexit election, clearly, because Brexit will be the dominant issue

they will have to tackle. Michel Barnier will set out the remit that

he has two negotiate on our behalf of EU member states. There will be

no talks until the election is out of the way, but there are big

disagreements already, one of which is the question of a divorce Bill,

the money the UK will be asked to pay to leave, money it owes in terms

:33:59.:34:03.

of budget commitments and the rest of it. There is a report today

:34:04.:34:07.

saying it could be as much as 100 alien euro. David Davis said the UK

is not going to be paying that. I think the volume went down slightly,

I hope it did not affect your TV too much.

Today marks ten years since the disappearance

:34:27.:34:27.

The BBC's Panorama programme has learnt that Portuguese detectives

:34:28.:34:30.

never believed the main British police theory that the toddler was

:34:31.:34:33.

The three-year-old went missing from a holiday apartment in Praia da

:34:34.:34:37.

The Portuguese police, known as the PJ, told

:34:38.:34:40.

Panorama's Richard Bilton they did not believe four

:34:41.:34:44.

suspects questioned early in the investigation were involved

:34:45.:34:47.

We questioned those people on the request

:34:48.:34:54.

And only based on the request of the Metropolitan Police.

:34:55.:34:59.

As I understand it, the PJ did not ever think that was a viable theory?

:35:00.:35:04.

We never questioned those people, we never looked at those people

:35:05.:35:09.

The Panorama programme Madeleine McCann: Ten Years On will

Detectives have been given more time to question three young women

:35:16.:35:24.

arrested on suspicion of terror offences.

:35:25.:35:25.

The three, two aged 18, and one 19, were detained

:35:26.:35:28.

The operation was linked to a raid in North-West London last week,

:35:29.:35:32.

during which another woman was shot and wounded by police.

:35:33.:35:37.

The England footballer Aaron Lennon is reported to have been detained

:35:38.:35:40.

The 30-year-old Premier League star was taken to hospital for assessment

:35:41.:35:46.

amid concerns for his welfare after police found him near the side

:35:47.:35:50.

His club Everton say they are supporting Lennon

:35:51.:35:56.

as he receives treatment for a stress-related illness.

:35:57.:35:59.

They added that his family has asked privacy at this time.

:36:00.:36:03.

Lennon's representative Base Soccer Agency also

:36:04.:36:05.

tweeted their support to the winger, who joined Everton

Prince William is said to be seeking ?1.3 million in damages.

:36:21.:36:23.

The photos were taken while the couple were holidaying

:36:24.:36:25.

at a private chateau in the south of France.

:36:26.:36:27.

Six people have gone on trial over the publication.

Seals are being temporarily deafened by underwater noise in the UK's

:36:35.:36:36.

Researchers from the University of St Andrews compared

:36:37.:36:39.

the experience of the seals to that of people living amid

:36:40.:36:43.

They said the UK has some of the busiest shipping lanes

:36:44.:36:48.

in the world, and underwater noise has been increasing

:36:49.:36:50.

For 20 of the 28 seals studied, the predicted noise was loud enough

They said high noise levels could also have an impact on other

about why the fiery duo make We often tell you what will be

coming up. We were hoping to speak to Mark Selby, we were going to his

:38:54.:38:58.

house and you have a chat with the three-time Snooker champion, but we

:38:59.:39:04.

can't find him! Apparently he was singing sweet

:39:05.:39:08.

Caroline at 5am after he won a world title, so maybe he is lying low.

:39:09.:39:11.

Fingers crossed we will speak to him. But we will have to wait and

see given because of the sports news!

:39:17.:39:20.

The drama and excitement has no end! Exactly! Let's talk about Cristiano

:39:21.:39:32.

Ronaldo. How lucky we that we are in the year of Cristiano Ronaldo and

:39:33.:39:38.

Lionel Messi? I was listening to Phil Neville and his comments last

:39:39.:39:43.

night, he said that they are the two best players who ever lived, and he

:39:44.:39:47.

said he grew up listening to his dad talking about George Best, had for

:39:48.:39:51.

him, these are the best you have ever played football.

:39:52.:39:53.

Thanks to Ronaldo, Real Madrid beat their city rivals Atletico 3-0

:39:54.:39:56.

in their semi-final first leg at the Bernabeu.

:39:57.:39:58.

Ronaldo scored the winning penalty in last year's final between these

:39:59.:40:01.

sides and he was once again Real's star last night.

:40:02.:40:03.

His hat trick means Real are still on for their third

Champions League title in four years.

Sunderland manager David Moyes has until 6pm this evening to respond

:40:12.:40:14.

to an FA charge after telling a female BBC reporter

Moyes was caught on camera making the remarks after a post-match

:40:19.:40:23.

He's said he deeply regrets his comments.

World champion and world-record holder Colin Jackson says

:40:29.:40:31.

athletics authorities should get their own house in order

:40:32.:40:35.

before removing records from athletes like him.

:40:36.:40:37.

A controversial anti-doping proposal could see those set

:40:38.:40:40.

Jackson held the 110-metre hurdles world record for 13 years,

:40:41.:40:46.

and his mark over 60 metres remains unbeaten.

:40:47.:40:51.

Look at your house today and make sure your sport is in order.

:40:52.:40:56.

Eradicating records from the past surely is not going to make any

:40:57.:41:00.

difference to the future in that particular way.

:41:01.:41:03.

They have really got to make sure their doping

The two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova

:41:07.:41:14.

is back on a tennis court, just over four months after injuring

:41:15.:41:17.

Kvitova was hurt as she fought off an intruder at her home

:41:18.:41:21.

She posted a photo of herself training on social media and said,

:41:22.:41:27.

"I hope this picture makes you as happy as it makes me."

:41:28.:41:31.

Defending Wimbledon champion Andy Murray says he is looking

:41:32.:41:35.

He says grand slams will not be obliged to give Maria Sharapova a

:41:36.:41:48.

wild card because they do not need the publicity. He said that

:41:49.:41:56.

Wimbledon and the French Open will make their own decisions.

:41:57.:42:00.

A lot of the smaller events in the build-up to the grand slams, she has

:42:01.:42:06.

been given wild card because she is a huge draw and they are making a

:42:07.:42:12.

decision based on what is best for them as a tournament and as a

:42:13.:42:17.

business, but for the grand slams, they are such huge events, that does

:42:18.:42:23.

not come into it as much. We have found Mark Selby! He has

:42:24.:42:30.

emerged from the fog of celebrating the victory at equitable on Monday

:42:31.:42:33.

which confirmed him as one of snooker's all-time greats, with

:42:34.:42:38.

three world titles to his name. His opponent John Higgins thinks Mark

:42:39.:42:42.

Selby could break Stephen Hendry's record of seven World Championships.

:42:43.:42:47.

Here is a reminder of how he won his three Crucible titles.

:42:48.:42:59.

Absolutely incredible! He was 8-3 down, 10-5 down. Everybody is

:43:00.:43:10.

delighted. A milestone in this very popular player from Leicester, Mark

:43:11.:43:16.

Selby. It is there. He points up to his

:43:17.:43:27.

wife Vicky. Look at that smile. Ding Junhui is having a look, he is

:43:28.:43:30.

coming forward to shake the hand. What a great final. For the second

:43:31.:43:40.

time. What a turnaround, 10-4, as you

:43:41.:43:48.

said. Isn't that nice to see John Higgins coming forward. Hugs all

:43:49.:43:54.

around. What a victory for Mark Selby. That is his third world

:43:55.:44:00.

title. I am happy to say the so-called just

:44:01.:44:06.

from Leicester Mark Selby joins us from his home in Leicestershire. We

:44:07.:44:11.

find you in the end, how have you been celebrating? I heard there was

:44:12.:44:16.

some late night thinking the night that you want? -- singing? We have

:44:17.:44:23.

the after party, which I do every year, did not get to bed until 7am,

:44:24.:44:29.

all of the friends and family there, it was great to celebrate it with

:44:30.:44:33.

them. Three times world champion, he said it was a dream come true, you

:44:34.:44:37.

never thought you would be as good as that, how are you feeling?

:44:38.:44:44.

Unbelievable. To win it one time is fantastic, and if I had never won it

:44:45.:44:47.

again I would have been more than happy, or to win it three times in

:44:48.:44:53.

four years is quite remarkable. How do you feel to have emerged from the

:44:54.:44:58.

shadow of Leicester City winning the Premier League title last season,

:44:59.:45:03.

has you won the title last year, but everyone was talking about the

:45:04.:45:06.

football team and what they achieved. You were a side story, but

:45:07.:45:10.

this year you are their crowning glory. It was quite nice, because

:45:11.:45:16.

the previous times when I have won it, the first time as the city won

:45:17.:45:21.

the championship, so that took the shine off, and last year they won

:45:22.:45:25.

the Premier League, I was over the moon for them as well, so this year

:45:26.:45:31.

it is nice because at least it is just a triumph for me, and hopefully

:45:32.:45:34.

I can put a show on. When you are sitting in the chair at

:45:35.:45:47.

10-4 down, are you thinking no one has come back from that for a one

:45:48.:45:51.

time or did you cast your mind back to the match against Ronnie

:45:52.:45:55.

O'Sullivan when you were 10-5 down? I did have flashbacks to the

:45:56.:45:59.

O'Sullivan match and was just trying to stay positive, as hard as it was,

:46:00.:46:05.

because I felt I'd hit a brick wall on the first day of the final

:46:06.:46:09.

because of the semifinal against Ding Junhui. I tried to stay

:46:10.:46:12.

positive and reflect back on the games against O'Sullivan and thought

:46:13.:46:16.

who knows, it might be a semi-Dummett fairy tale, I won

:46:17.:46:25.

17-15. -- might be a fairy tale. It was quite surreal that everything

:46:26.:46:34.

seemed to happen the first year I won. There was controversy about the

:46:35.:46:37.

black ball in the final. We are going to watch that moment. Talked

:46:38.:46:41.

us through it from your point of view. Yeah, I assumed I hit the

:46:42.:46:49.

black and felt it went forward a tiny bit and then moved back.

:46:50.:46:53.

Obviously Jan Verhaas, the referee, at the time said it I looked at it

:46:54.:46:57.

in the studio with John Parrott and Steve Davis Anne Begg initially

:46:58.:47:00.

turned around and said it did hit it and when they watched it back there

:47:01.:47:04.

will not sure. To be fair to John Higgins he asked for a replay if I

:47:05.:47:08.

wanted it but the referee's decision was final at the end of the day so I

:47:09.:47:12.

had take it and that was hard to take but John ended up winning the

:47:13.:47:20.

frame which turned out to be not so decisive and I managed to come back.

:47:21.:47:24.

You say it was tough to take but you can see that you looked flustered in

:47:25.:47:29.

any way at all. People called you granite, I think John Higgins said

:47:30.:47:33.

you are absolute granite, you don't get shaken, Ronnie O'Sullivan has

:47:34.:47:37.

called you the torture in the past because you can just keep calm and

:47:38.:47:42.

you drag yourself back into matches. What is it in new? Do you feel that

:47:43.:47:46.

strength? How do you practice to keep that calm under pressure like

:47:47.:47:51.

that? I think it was something my father instilled in me before I

:47:52.:47:54.

turned professional, he said in a game of snooker it can change by

:47:55.:47:59.

just one shot or a one pot so you never give in until the last ball is

:48:00.:48:03.

potted and that has stuck with me and I showed again in that final, at

:48:04.:48:07.

16-15 John clear that frame and it was hard to take but at the same

:48:08.:48:10.

time I sat in my chair and thought to myself, this time yesterday I was

:48:11.:48:14.

10-4 down looking like I wasn't going to be able to win the

:48:15.:48:17.

tournament. If somebody said to be the next day you would be 16-15 up

:48:18.:48:20.

after what happened I would have still been over the moon with that

:48:21.:48:24.

so I stayed positive and tried to forget about it as quickly as

:48:25.:48:28.

possible. Was it sweet Caroline that you sang at karaoke? As far as I can

:48:29.:48:36.

remember I think so. Everyone else tells me it was Sweet Caroline but I

:48:37.:48:41.

can't remember myself. To be honest, snooker is getting in the wake! Have

:48:42.:48:47.

you slept with the trophy? No, I've not slept with it, I got back to the

:48:48.:48:50.

room seven o'clock yesterday morning, slept for about three

:48:51.:48:54.

hours, one of my mates knocked on the room and I drove back and

:48:55.:48:56.

dropped them off in Leicester and had a good night's sleep last night

:48:57.:49:00.

so feel a lot better today. Thank you for joining us. Congratulations.

:49:01.:49:05.

World Snooker champion again. Good to track him down.

:49:06.:49:11.

For decades they were downright hostile to one another,

:49:12.:49:15.

yet they were eventually dubbed The Chuckle Brothers.

:49:16.:49:17.

Martin McGuinness and Ian Paisley were Northern Ireland's most

:49:18.:49:19.

Remarkably, against all the odds, a working relationship

:49:20.:49:28.

between these clashing figures which enabled the peace process.

:49:29.:49:30.

That story is now the focus of a new film called

:49:31.:49:33.

We are on the verge of something the wider world will applaud

:49:34.:49:37.

You are being asked to betray your tribe and I'm

:49:38.:49:41.

How can we even contemplate doing that?

:49:42.:50:01.

That's the first time you've said we.

:50:02.:50:19.

Timothy Spall who plays Ian Paisley in the film joins us now.

:50:20.:50:25.

Lovely to see you. Thank you for joining us. Nice to be here. My

:50:26.:50:34.

goodness, it is uncanny, but the resemblance, how much did you study

:50:35.:50:38.

the man and his speeches etc before you played him? I looked at a lot of

:50:39.:50:43.

footage of him and I looked, try to find a lot of footage where he was

:50:44.:50:47.

quiet, there is a lot of film when he is older and quieter and not in

:50:48.:50:52.

his barnstorming and hectoring oratorio. It is looking at trying to

:50:53.:50:56.

work out what is going on inside him rather than what you see outside

:50:57.:51:00.

will stop that's just the job you do, that's your job really, you

:51:01.:51:04.

know? You spent a lot of time doing that, did you? I did, one particular

:51:05.:51:08.

speech I looked at him a lot and carried around on my mobile phone

:51:09.:51:12.

when he was saying goodbye to the English Parliament before he took

:51:13.:51:17.

over, you know, became, you know, part of the process. It was an

:51:18.:51:20.

intriguing, you know, a process of trying to dig into what is the

:51:21.:51:25.

make-up of somebody as extraordinary as him.

:51:26.:51:27.

It feels so current, doesn't it come at the moment with the breakdown of

:51:28.:51:31.

power again, and of course, the death of Martin McGuinness recently.

:51:32.:51:37.

Indeed. The thing is feelings run very deep there. There is a lot of

:51:38.:51:40.

sorrow and a lot of pain. The remarkable thing is the piece was

:51:41.:51:45.

found by these two intractable, implacable men. -- piece. It is a

:51:46.:51:52.

beacon of hope. Obviously the whole world is up in the air with Brexit

:51:53.:51:59.

for us. The fact they have done it once, let's hope it sticks and holds

:52:00.:52:02.

and acts as a beacon of hope. We are going to watch another clip

:52:03.:52:06.

from the film which is a pivotal moment. The two men share a car

:52:07.:52:09.

journey at the start of this journey towards friendship, I suppose it is.

:52:10.:52:16.

OK, I do know your face. Who are you really? This is Doctor Ian Paisley,

:52:17.:52:23.

leader of the Democratic Unionist Party. Founder and moderator of the

:52:24.:52:31.

Free Presbyterian Church. Cool. And you, sir. And this is Martin

:52:32.:52:37.

McGuinness, former chief of staff of the Irish Republican Army.

:52:38.:52:40.

Allegedly. So much of this is imagined, isn't

:52:41.:52:48.

it? We don't know the true details. Yes. It picks up at this moment when

:52:49.:52:52.

they were travelling together, I didn't know this, they often

:52:53.:52:56.

travelled together, two sides, so it sort of guarantee their safety. That

:52:57.:53:00.

is evidently the case, indeed. Obviously given security situation

:53:01.:53:04.

they had to travel together. This afforded them this one particular,

:53:05.:53:10.

obviously this is an imagining of what would have happened, this

:53:11.:53:15.

journey they took together that eventually led to them shaking hands

:53:16.:53:22.

at the end of it. So it really is remarkable given the, you know, that

:53:23.:53:29.

on the face of it this was a thing that was never going to be solved

:53:30.:53:33.

because of the impasse between the two amazingly different ideologies,

:53:34.:53:40.

these feelings, Republican Unionist. But eventually they did do it. The

:53:41.:53:46.

thing they had to face up to was the terrible sacrifice they had to make,

:53:47.:53:50.

which was they had to sacrifice their own, to a certain degree, the

:53:51.:53:53.

sense they were betraying their own people because they said they would

:53:54.:53:57.

never compromise. But they got across the line. This is the

:53:58.:54:02.

remarkable thing. And of course, these two very, very clever

:54:03.:54:07.

intractable and implacable men, who were sworn enemies, became very good

:54:08.:54:11.

friends. In fact they became known as The Chuckle Brothers. Which is

:54:12.:54:14.

amazing. I remember when Martin McGuinness died we spoke to Ian

:54:15.:54:18.

Paisley's son on this programme and he went into quite a bit of detail

:54:19.:54:22.

on that relationship. Just seeing them smiling together was thought

:54:23.:54:26.

impossible just years before that. Indeed. I remember because I took my

:54:27.:54:29.

eye off the ball for a moment when it was all going on and the next

:54:30.:54:33.

thing I knew there had been a peace deal but then I saw them on the

:54:34.:54:36.

television laughing together. I grew up with them, albeit something I

:54:37.:54:45.

thought would never be resolved. But they did. I watched a lot of stuff

:54:46.:54:48.

around it and it was quite an interesting footage where Martin

:54:49.:54:53.

McGuinness is told about Ian Paisley's death, and actually he is

:54:54.:55:01.

quite moved by it. It really is an amazing... Apart from everything and

:55:02.:55:03.

apart from the fact it is quite funny, the writer put a lot of black

:55:04.:55:16.

humour in it. It is a real lesson in conflict resolution in a time now

:55:17.:55:20.

when we need it. It's interesting watching it because there are so

:55:21.:55:24.

many characters we know, real personalities, people we are

:55:25.:55:27.

accustomed to seeing. There is Tony Blair being played, Gerry Adams as

:55:28.:55:33.

well. Yes. Is it a different sense of responsibility, or does it make

:55:34.:55:35.

you more nervous playing somebody we are so familiar with? Yes, it's a

:55:36.:55:41.

massive responsibility. Obviously as you know, the feelings are so deep

:55:42.:55:45.

and the memories are so strong. There is a lot of hurt. There is

:55:46.:55:50.

that so you don't want to be stepping on anybody's sensibilities.

:55:51.:55:57.

But there is always the sense that Mrs Paisley is still very much there

:55:58.:56:01.

and his son, so this one human being to another debt of trying to get

:56:02.:56:04.

something right in a textured, rounded weight is very important to

:56:05.:56:11.

me. You don't play the consequences of some of the actions, you play

:56:12.:56:16.

what they feel from inside them. I was very aware. I don't know but I

:56:17.:56:21.

hear on the grapevine that everybody's OK about it. It was very

:56:22.:56:25.

important to me as a human being that I got that side right, and also

:56:26.:56:31.

that one wasn't stepping on anybody's sensibilities. I think the

:56:32.:56:34.

script is incredibly well-balanced. They go at each other hammer and

:56:35.:56:39.

tongs and it's an opportunity and a vehicle for these people to voice

:56:40.:56:43.

these massive differences. They really are very hard with each

:56:44.:56:47.

other, and are so harsh at times it's actually funny. You can't

:56:48.:56:50.

believe these men with these feelings, these powerful feelings,

:56:51.:56:55.

actually are able to come together. Thank you very much indeed. It's an

:56:56.:57:00.

amazing portrayal, thank you so much.

:57:01.:57:01.

We know it's your job but it's very good. You are very sweet to say so.

:57:02.:57:04.

Thank you for joining us. The film is called The Journey

:57:05.:57:06.

and is released on Friday. Here's Carol with a look

:57:07.:57:10.

at this morning's weather. It is a fine start to the day for

:57:11.:57:17.

some of us as this weather watcher picture shows, this is Hornsea in

:57:18.:57:21.

Yorkshire, lovely blue skies, temperature picking up nicely and

:57:22.:57:25.

for most of the UK it is mainly dry start, I say mainly because there is

:57:26.:57:30.

some rain, as this weather watcher picture shows in Kent, coming across

:57:31.:57:34.

parts of the south-eastern quarter of England courtesy of this area of

:57:35.:57:37.

cloud that has been building through the night taking rain with it

:57:38.:57:42.

preceded by a few showers. The cloud is melting away, lots of sunshine

:57:43.:57:46.

around, especially for Scotland, northern England, Northern Ireland,

:57:47.:57:49.

parts of Wales and the south-west but through the day you can see how

:57:50.:57:53.

the cloud is building over in the direction of the west, so by the

:57:54.:58:00.

time you get to the afternoon it will be parts of north-west Wales,

:58:01.:58:02.

for example, that will hang onto the sunshine, the rest of Wales will see

:58:03.:58:05.

the cloud continued to build. In Northern Ireland you are in the

:58:06.:58:07.

sunshine already and you will hang onto it through the day,

:58:08.:58:11.

temperatures up to 15 or 16 Celsius. The same for Scotland, a lot of

:58:12.:58:14.

sunshine after a chilly start, the cloud melting away, that amateur

:58:15.:58:19.

picking up nicely now. Yesterday 21 Celsius, the warmest day in Scotland

:58:20.:58:24.

this year so far. Northern England is off to a beautiful start, you

:58:25.:58:28.

will hang on to the sunshine but you can see the PAOK building further

:58:29.:58:31.

north and extending through the Midlands, East Anglia and towards

:58:32.:58:36.

Kent and seven counties -- the cloud is building. There will be patchy

:58:37.:58:40.

showers but they will be hit and miss. Building into the south-west

:58:41.:58:44.

of England with the cloud but there will be bright spells. Overnight and

:58:45.:58:48.

through the evening quite a noticeable breeze still, still

:58:49.:58:51.

feeling chilly if you are out, still a lot of cloud and showers but

:58:52.:58:55.

across Scotland and Northern Ireland under clearer skies once again it

:58:56.:58:58.

will be cold, the temperature dipping quickly after dark. They

:58:59.:59:02.

could be a touch of frost first thing tomorrow morning. But there

:59:03.:59:07.

will be a lot of sunshine across Scotland and Northern Ireland.

:59:08.:59:09.

Sunshine across northern England but a fair bit of cloud across southern

:59:10.:59:13.

areas. That will produce one or two showers and with the breeze it will

:59:14.:59:17.

help break up the crowd in places too. Like the last few days, today

:59:18.:59:22.

and tomorrow, it will feel cool down the east coast, especially if you

:59:23.:59:27.

are in the wind. At times it will feel quite cold. And then as we move

:59:28.:59:31.

on towards Friday we are looking again at a fair bit of cloud in

:59:32.:59:34.

southern areas, moving north of that and although there will be some

:59:35.:59:37.

cloud floating around there will be a lot of dry weather, there will

:59:38.:59:42.

also be a fair bit of sunshine too. Temperature is still that bit lower

:59:43.:59:45.

along the east but as we move west we are looking at 14, 15, London

:59:46.:59:50.

could hit 15 as well, the temperature touched by the breeze.

:59:51.:59:53.

For the weekend high pressure has been dominating our weather for the

:59:54.:59:57.

last wee while, drifting towards Iceland, weaning the wind that moves

:59:58.:00:02.

around and BM moves clockwise, changing to a more north-easterly,

:00:03.:00:06.

cold direction for us, so although this week and it will be mostly dry,

:00:07.:00:10.

risk of rain in the south-west on Saturday, there is no heat in

:00:11.:00:16.

prospect. Thank you very much. Apologies for being a bit late but

:00:17.:00:17.

we had a world champion to talk to. 60 years ago Britain tested it's

:00:18.:00:32.

first set of Hydrogen bombs, marking the country out

:00:33.:00:34.

as a nuclear power. The event was witnessed up close

:00:35.:00:36.

by a small group of naval officers, one of them, Michael Johnston, has

:00:37.:00:39.

now written a book about that time. Take us back to that moment, 1957,

:00:40.:00:51.

Great Britain joining the nuclear age.

:00:52.:00:56.

It was spectacular in some senses and banal in others. 15 minutes

:00:57.:01:03.

after the dawn of the tropics, the flight deck of a carrier is like a

:01:04.:01:08.

hot tin roof, and we were sitting on the deck, waiting until our bottoms

:01:09.:01:12.

were burning, and we had to ease ourselves up on their fingertips.

:01:13.:01:17.

They began to char, and we had to stand up to get protection. The

:01:18.:01:22.

actual event was beyond belief, spectacular. It fetched the fingers,

:01:23.:01:33.

the bones of my fingers on my eyes out. The brightness of the light,

:01:34.:01:40.

you had gloves on, goggles on, and your fingers in front of your eyes,

:01:41.:01:44.

and despite that, you saw an imprint of the bones of your fingers and

:01:45.:01:49.

smack not just me, a lot of people reported that at the time. You close

:01:50.:01:58.

to those -- you close your eyes, but then you saw the aftermath. We had

:01:59.:02:02.

our backs turned to the explosion when it occurred and after ten

:02:03.:02:06.

seconds we turned around and looked at it. There was this mouth of hell

:02:07.:02:14.

in the sky, with the huge fireball. Very quickly, the water vapour

:02:15.:02:21.

clouds began to surround it, and the heat of the explosion vaporised

:02:22.:02:26.

water from the sea and drew up that typical column underneath to create

:02:27.:02:35.

the iconic mushroom effect. Presumably a couple of seconds later

:02:36.:02:39.

the sound as well? It was more than a couple of seconds, because we were

:02:40.:02:44.

25 miles away. That is why it quarters by surprise. We had seen

:02:45.:02:51.

the flash, the explosion, and then suddenly the rumble hate us, and we

:02:52.:02:57.

all instinctively ducked. What was the sound like? Was it like being

:02:58.:03:03.

hit... It was like a whole lot of dustbins falling over, a clatter, a

:03:04.:03:07.

thunderstorm, anything you like like that. It is interesting seeing it

:03:08.:03:15.

from today's perspective. At the time, you were not scared or

:03:16.:03:21.

concerned? We were not scared, we were teenagers, I was 21, at that

:03:22.:03:25.

time it was a great adventure. We were not thinking about risk and

:03:26.:03:32.

danger. But we all wore film badges, we all had courts fibre to

:03:33.:03:39.

scimitars, and no radiation from these first three tests,

:03:40.:03:46.

significantly, was detected. More damage was done by the aircraft

:03:47.:03:50.

spraying DDT over Christmas Island to kill the flies than was done by

:03:51.:03:57.

the radiation. The book goes into historical detail about what was

:03:58.:04:00.

happening in the world, becoming a nuclear superpower, and some of the

:04:01.:04:07.

more frivolous side of things, like falling in love with hula girls and

:04:08.:04:11.

being around in the Pacific Ocean. It was unbelievably attractive to

:04:12.:04:19.

see dusky maidens swaying and damn thing in front of you. Here they

:04:20.:04:34.

are. That is on the flight deck. It was a totally out of this world

:04:35.:04:38.

experience for us, coming from post-war Britain austerity, as it

:04:39.:04:49.

was then and now. They went on to be shipped? Yes, they came to welcome

:04:50.:04:58.

us and danced on board. We thought heaven had arrived. It is made up of

:04:59.:05:06.

all sorts of letters and documents, which you have held onto. We all

:05:07.:05:12.

wrote letters home, and surprisingly most of us kept them, and as

:05:13.:05:19.

Midshipman and you kept a journal, and there were diaries and other

:05:20.:05:24.

documents. There was a rich amount of material to gather up. It is a

:05:25.:05:28.

fascinating book. The book is called

:05:29.:05:31.

H-Bombs and Hula Girls. Time now for a last,

:05:32.:05:33.

brief look at the headlines This morning we've been

:05:34.:05:35.

hearing about the impact of the disappearance

:05:36.:07:24.

of Madeleine McCann ten years ago. In the UK, charities

:07:25.:07:27.

estimate 140,000 children disappear each year,

:07:28.:07:31.

as often as one every three minutes. Many are found within hours,

:07:32.:07:36.

but some never return home. So what can be done to help prevent

:07:37.:07:41.

children from going missing and to ensure those families

:07:42.:07:44.

who are living day-to-day without their loved ones

:07:45.:07:47.

are properly supported? We're joined by Kevin Gosden,

:07:48.:07:49.

whose son Andrew also And Clare Cook from

:07:50.:07:52.

the charity Missing People I have met you over many years,

:07:53.:08:09.

since Andrew went missing. Give us a sense... Tell us about what happened

:08:10.:08:14.

on that day. It came as a complete surprise? Yes, Andrew appeared to go

:08:15.:08:20.

out to school in the morning in his uniform, he said, see you later.

:08:21.:08:26.

What he then did was cross the road, waited for us to leave for work,

:08:27.:08:33.

came in, got changed, empties his bank account, got a train to King's

:08:34.:08:42.

Cross and since then we have had no confirmable sighting or information

:08:43.:08:45.

as to whether he is alive or dead or what happened to him. But we have no

:08:46.:08:54.

idea where he thought he was going, why he thought he was going there,

:08:55.:08:57.

he seemed absolutely his normal self up until that point. We have

:08:58.:09:03.

continued hoping and searching ever since. One of thousands of children

:09:04.:09:12.

who go missing every year, 140,000. Is there one may reason, and

:09:13.:09:20.

overriding reason, or is there a combination? People go missing for

:09:21.:09:24.

all sorts of reasons. Generally, there is a sign that there is

:09:25.:09:30.

something wrong, a problem, and children need help and support and

:09:31.:09:34.

guidance to get them back to a place of safety, which is why we are here.

:09:35.:09:39.

Most of them are found, thankfully, within a few hours. Yes, the vast

:09:40.:09:47.

majority, 76%, are found within the first day or two. Within a year, 96%

:09:48.:09:53.

are found, which is great news. But there is that 4% who are not found

:09:54.:10:00.

within a year, and for whose families the turmoil of living in

:10:01.:10:04.

limbo goes on and on. Unfortunately, Andrew is part of that. I am sure it

:10:05.:10:10.

does not get any easier for you or your family, there must be thousands

:10:11.:10:14.

of questions you ask every day. Exactly. It haunts you. Every day of

:10:15.:10:23.

your life. I continue to soak -- struggle with depression, anxiety,

:10:24.:10:32.

PTSD. It makes life for the whole family a real battle. You put all

:10:33.:10:39.

the effort you can into keeping his name out there, keeping up the

:10:40.:10:44.

publicity. If that really important to you? After so long, in all

:10:45.:10:55.

honesty, one of the hopes we would have is, might we find some

:10:56.:10:59.

identifiable remains? Because the possibility that he is dead seems so

:11:00.:11:07.

great, after so long with no word and no contact and no information. I

:11:08.:11:11.

suppose at least that would bring an end to things. It is not like losing

:11:12.:11:17.

somebody in an accident or for health reasons, because you do not

:11:18.:11:25.

know, you cannot close that off. And go through any grieving process. You

:11:26.:11:30.

just get stuck, thinking, are they dead, are they alive? The McCanns

:11:31.:11:40.

will be going through the same thing every day. You helped so many people

:11:41.:11:45.

in this situation, and you are trying to offer helpful teenagers

:11:46.:11:49.

who might be thinking, I am just going to walk out today, whatever it

:11:50.:11:54.

is, you can give them help. We have a 24-hour confidential helpline,

:11:55.:12:01.

which young people can call if they thinking of running away or if they

:12:02.:12:04.

have run away, and want to understand the options available to

:12:05.:12:09.

them. We will never try to force somebody to go home if that is not

:12:10.:12:12.

the right call for them, but we want to get them to a place of safety and

:12:13.:12:16.

our trained advisers and counsellors can help to get young people into a

:12:17.:12:23.

safer position. Why did you think there is such a huge difference in

:12:24.:12:27.

the amount of publicity, with some cases getting more than others? It

:12:28.:12:33.

is difficult. When a child goes missing under four, that represents

:12:34.:12:39.

just 1% of the missing cases every year, so it is a very rare

:12:40.:12:48.

situation. We are very careful, we work alongside the police to work

:12:49.:12:51.

out what the best level of publicity is. For some people, a huge

:12:52.:12:57.

publicity is not the best option. The police will risk assess and work

:12:58.:13:03.

out what level of publicity is correct for the individual missing

:13:04.:13:08.

person. But the charity Missing People has a minimum publicity

:13:09.:13:13.

pledge, we ensure that if publicity is safe, every missing person gets a

:13:14.:13:17.

minimum level of publicity, and we work with the Royal Mail, who issue

:13:18.:13:21.

alerts to postmen and women, the outdoor media industry, who get

:13:22.:13:23.

appeals up on billboards. Charlie and Sally will be

:13:24.:13:36.

here tomorrow from 6am, when they'll be joined

:13:37.:13:43.

by The Girl On The Train We asked you to tell us what's left

:13:44.:13:47.

you feeling ripped off, and you contacted us in your

:13:48.:13:49.

thousands. service that simply is not up to

:13:50.:13:52.

scratch. Well, we are all just numbers,

:13:53.:13:58.

aren't we, at the end of the day?
