the papers on the BBC News Channel in a few minutes. Now | :00:00. | :00:13.
And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Anne Davies. Good | :00:14. | :00:18.
evening. First tonight, East Midlands Airport remains closed | :00:19. | :00:20.
tonight as investigators try to remove a stranded cargo plane from | :00:21. | :00:25.
the runway. It's been shut for around 20 hours now with dozens of | :00:26. | :00:29.
flights cancelled that have caused huge disruption to thousands of | :00:30. | :00:34.
passengers. Our reporter Mike O'Sullivan has been at the airport | :00:35. | :00:37.
all day and joins me now. Mike, when's it due to reopen? Good | :00:38. | :00:47.
evening. In the last few minutes I have been told that the stranded | :00:48. | :00:52.
plane is now beginning to reap `` be cleared from the runway. It is a | :00:53. | :00:56.
huge operation to lift it out of the way. It is hoped the report could | :00:57. | :01:00.
open in the next few hours. Disruption for passion is `` | :01:01. | :01:04.
passengers continued late into the evening. Passengers for the Phantom | :01:05. | :01:10.
plane that never was. They were checked into a Ryanair flight to | :01:11. | :01:15.
Alicante that was supposed to be leaving around 11:20pm tonight. | :01:16. | :01:19.
After going into security and getting a meal voucher, they were | :01:20. | :01:23.
sent back to get on a bus to Birmingham Airport. I've been told | :01:24. | :01:29.
are going to Birmingham. I bus. How do you feel? Disgusted. It is like | :01:30. | :01:37.
whistling for Dixie and they don't come. We had to come through here | :01:38. | :01:44.
and they said, you are going to Birmingham. Flights were cancelled | :01:45. | :01:49.
affecting around 6000 passengers today. The huge cargo plane stranded | :01:50. | :01:54.
on the runway, the landing gear slapped `` snapped at 2:30am after | :01:55. | :01:59.
the plane landed normally delivering parcels from Paris. Throughout the | :02:00. | :02:05.
day, passengers have been ferried to Manchester and Leeds airport. | :02:06. | :02:10.
Originally we thought we were going off earlier than this to Leeds, | :02:11. | :02:17.
about 11am this morning. Apparently there is a problem with the | :02:18. | :02:22.
coaches. We will have to wait and see what happens. The staff have | :02:23. | :02:27.
been very informative. There are no buses to Manchester. We are flying | :02:28. | :02:36.
out of Manchester at 1:55pm. This is a very complex situation. The | :02:37. | :02:40.
aircraft had incident this morning at 2:30am. That led to a full | :02:41. | :02:45.
investigation. That takes time to complete. The owners of the plane | :02:46. | :02:51.
have said sorry for the inconvenience. An air accident | :02:52. | :02:59.
investigation is underway. The report says Ryanair had to | :03:00. | :03:03.
switch that delayed flight to Birmingham because of crewing | :03:04. | :03:07.
problems. Of the cargo plane says it was well maintained and had an | :03:08. | :03:11.
inspection only last week. But now here's hoping that the airport will | :03:12. | :03:16.
reopen in the next few hours. Thanks very much, Mike. | :03:17. | :03:19.
The former Conservative MP for Newark, Patrick Mercer, has tonight | :03:20. | :03:21.
resigned, prompting speculation of a snap Parliamentary by`election. It | :03:22. | :03:26.
comes after he was suspended from the House of Commons for allegedly | :03:27. | :03:29.
accepting money for asking questions in Parliament for a foreign client. | :03:30. | :03:34.
This report from our Political Editor John Hess. | :03:35. | :03:40.
Tonight, Patrick Mercer walked out on 13 years as Newark's MP. His | :03:41. | :03:48.
parliamentary reputation in tatters. What's happened has happened, I am | :03:49. | :03:52.
ashamed of it. Therefore I will do what I can to put it right, for the | :03:53. | :03:57.
constituency of Newark. I am a Newark man. I have not lived in | :03:58. | :04:01.
Newark for any political expediency. I have lived here for my family and | :04:02. | :04:05.
my wife. We have been under such pressure last year. I hope that my | :04:06. | :04:10.
successor, who has been well and truly chosen, will be the | :04:11. | :04:17.
Conservative candidate. His downfall was this, agreeing to lobby on | :04:18. | :04:22.
behalf of the government of the G. `` of Fiji. Today, the Parliamentary | :04:23. | :04:29.
committee for standards used its full powers to suspend him from the | :04:30. | :04:34.
Commons were six months. Tonight, at his Newark constituency, this was of | :04:35. | :04:38.
the reaction. I think it is the right thing. It is a bit of a | :04:39. | :04:44.
shock, really, because we have all been happy with him normally. We | :04:45. | :04:48.
have all been fine with him in Newark. He left the Conservative | :04:49. | :04:54.
party within weeks of the original allegations and intended to remain | :04:55. | :04:56.
as an independent until the general election. Tonight he has forced a | :04:57. | :05:00.
by`election that will be very unwelcome in Downing Street. | :05:01. | :05:03.
And John's with me now. So how soon will there will a by`election in | :05:04. | :05:07.
Newark? The by`election kicks and once the Parliamentary ripped has | :05:08. | :05:11.
been moved through the House of Commons. Then there will be a | :05:12. | :05:15.
further three to four weeks. The significance is this. The date will | :05:16. | :05:20.
be after Thursday May 22, the date for the European and local | :05:21. | :05:25.
elections. Nigel Farage, any likelihood he can stand? Today, | :05:26. | :05:30.
Nigel Farage said he would be interested in standing in Newark if | :05:31. | :05:36.
it was after the European elections. The Conservatives already have a | :05:37. | :05:42.
Parliamentary candidate in place, he is a director with the auctioneer | :05:43. | :05:46.
's. Labour also have a candidate in place. Patrick Mercer had a | :05:47. | :05:54.
Conservative majority of 16,000 at the last general election. But as we | :05:55. | :05:58.
know, in a Parliamentary by`election, that majority could | :05:59. | :06:04.
disappear like sand in the hand. Especially with a strong challenge | :06:05. | :06:08.
from UKIP. Let's watch this space. Thank you very much. | :06:09. | :06:11.
Hundreds of University of Derby students have been told they could | :06:12. | :06:15.
have been put at risk of contracting the HIV virus. It's after a health | :06:16. | :06:18.
worker was suspended for re`using syringe barrels for blood tests and | :06:19. | :06:21.
vaccinations. An investigation's underway. NHS England has told more | :06:22. | :06:24.
than six hundred students they could be infected with blood borne | :06:25. | :06:27.
viruses, like Hepatitis B or HIV, but says the risk is 'extremely | :06:28. | :06:32.
low'. That's how the news looks so far. | :06:33. | :06:37.
Let's take a look at the weather forecast. | :06:38. | :06:43.
Another warm day today. We have had close peeping in this afternoon. I | :06:44. | :06:46.
am hopeful there will be more sunshine breaking through for | :06:47. | :06:49.
tomorrow afternoon, although we will have to wait to get that. We will | :06:50. | :06:54.
start off quite murky once again. A few sneaky showers this evening, | :06:55. | :06:58.
they will fade away the night. A lot of crowd `` cloud and murk forming. | :06:59. | :07:06.
Seven, eight, nine degrees temperatures. The mist will start to | :07:07. | :07:13.
clear, and we will see the cloud breaking up into the afternoon. The | :07:14. | :07:16.
lesson spells of sunshine later on in the day. `` pleasant spells. | :07:17. | :07:24.
Temperatures getting up to around 16 or 17 degrees. There is a very small | :07:25. | :07:29.
chance of a light shower. I will leave with the Outlook | :07:30. | :07:33.
some sharp showers. It will be colder still on Friday. | :07:34. | :07:43.
Hello again, the holiday weekend is not far-away. We are still expecting | :07:44. | :07:46.
the weather to change significantly before then. Some patchy rain from | :07:47. | :07:55.
northern Scotland tomorrow. There is a lot of cloud coming in from the | :07:56. | :07:59.
North Sea which is pushing its way inland. There could be quite a bit | :08:00. | :08:05.
of fog around in the morning. It should be a mild, misty, murky start | :08:06. | :08:09.
to | :08:10. | :08:10. |
