That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me

:00:00.:00:00.

It's almost 6:30 - you're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:07.:00:09.

Our top story tonight, why you can bank on fewer branches.

:00:10.:00:17.

With 15 branches set to close address the region bosses are told

:00:18.:00:25.

to have a rethink. I don't think they consider the impact on the

:00:26.:00:32.

local community. Also tonight, Leicestershire Fire Service

:00:33.:00:36.

announced plans to recruit 25 new staff just 18 months after

:00:37.:00:38.

controversial cost-cutting plans were scrapped. Plus the student

:00:39.:00:45.

rowers who are clearing out the rubber so they can row on it. You

:00:46.:00:49.

would not believe the stuff they are finding and there. And join us for

:00:50.:00:58.

are cuppa with the man ringing the changes in an old red telephone box.

:00:59.:01:08.

Welcome to another week of the programme with Quentin Rayner

:01:09.:01:11.

We begin tonight with how a court's heard that the Nottinghamshire

:01:12.:01:17.

mother who went missing, with her two young sons,

:01:18.:01:19.

made false allegations against their father.

:01:20.:01:20.

A judge said Samantha Baldwin's claims that he'd abused

:01:21.:01:22.

He also said that she gave them drugs to try to prove her claims.

:01:23.:01:32.

Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, is here.

:01:33.:01:36.

Judge Jeremy Lea said people needed to know some essential facts.

:01:37.:01:43.

Because there's been so much "ill-informed

:01:44.:01:44.

You'll remember that Samantha Baldwin was arrested,

:01:45.:01:48.

at the end of last week, on suspicion of

:01:49.:01:50.

That's after the police found them in a holiday cabin,

:01:51.:01:57.

And it all followed a nationwide "missing persons" hunt,

:01:58.:02:01.

Now today the judge revealed that it started, when Samantha Baldwin

:02:02.:02:06.

That was while he was making a ruling on what contact

:02:07.:02:09.

And he said she took the boys away, to prevent the court from deciding

:02:10.:02:18.

So what did the judge say about those abuse allegations?

:02:19.:02:24.

In a nutshell, his judgement made it clear Samantha Baldwin's claims,

:02:25.:02:28.

And his Honour Judge Lea spelled it out.

:02:29.:02:32.

He said "the father had not perpetrated sexual,

:02:33.:02:36.

physical or emotional abuse against the boys, as

:02:37.:02:38.

He said "the allegations made by the mother were false".

:02:39.:02:41.

Samantha Baldwin "genuinely believed he had done it,

:02:42.:02:43.

And the judge added that "in order to try to prove her case",

:02:44.:02:51.

she "caused the boys to ingest substances".

:02:52.:02:52.

Two sedatives that would give rise to a positive drugs test.

:02:53.:02:58.

In short, the judge said she was trying to obstruct

:02:59.:03:00.

And he said the two boys, are now in the care of the local council.

:03:01.:03:06.

Next tonight, it's a sign of the times.

:03:07.:03:08.

In the last fortnight, two banks have announced that

:03:09.:03:10.

15 of their branches across the East Midlands

:03:11.:03:12.

They say customers moving to online and telephone banking

:03:13.:03:17.

The branches across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire are run

:03:18.:03:20.

In one Derby suburb it's prompted councillors to start a petition

:03:21.:03:27.

to try to keep their local Nat West branch open.

:03:28.:03:29.

The organisers say the closure will cause difficulties for businesses

:03:30.:03:32.

It's been there for decades but now it's shutting.

:03:33.:03:50.

The NatWest branch in Mickleover in Derby is a victim of

:03:51.:03:52.

15 branches of NatWest and of Lloyds are due to close across the country

:03:53.:04:01.

This is one of a few local councillors who have signed a

:04:02.:04:05.

We want to send the message to them to pause and think again about this.

:04:06.:04:18.

I don't think they consider what the effect is on a local community like

:04:19.:04:26.

this. They've is still another bank and the Post Office year but this

:04:27.:04:31.

storeowner says she has seen another branch close. I am surprised because

:04:32.:04:36.

they have just presented a disabled left which would have been very

:04:37.:04:39.

expensive. Are you worried that is closing down? Yes. What are you

:04:40.:04:47.

going to do? The post office will handle a lot of transactions and I

:04:48.:04:50.

will have to carry on from there. It is not good for the village and

:04:51.:04:59.

people's access. NatWest say they have listened to local communities

:05:00.:05:03.

and extended the time between announcing branch closures and

:05:04.:05:07.

actually shutting to six months to give people time to find alternative

:05:08.:05:08.

banking. Meanwhile, in Nottingham Lloyds

:05:09.:05:12.

say they've made a difficult decision

:05:13.:05:14.

to close its branch in old Market Square

:05:15.:05:15.

by the They say it's because of

:05:16.:05:17.

the changing way that customers bank with them and that this branch

:05:18.:05:20.

is being used much less. The savings made in this

:05:21.:05:23.

closure is going into developing other services such

:05:24.:05:27.

as online, telephone banking. In rural Derbyshire,

:05:28.:05:38.

Lloyds say they are investing in new bank vans so that people still

:05:39.:05:41.

have a bank that comes to them. Plenty more to look forward

:05:42.:05:44.

to on the programme. And with 20% of the East Midlands

:05:45.:05:46.

prone to flooding it's good to know scientists have come up with a way

:05:47.:05:50.

to predict them and respond quicker. Leicestershire fire service has

:05:51.:06:00.

today opened a recruitment drive to take on 25 new front line staff

:06:01.:06:03.

for the first time in It's a complete U-turn

:06:04.:06:06.

for the service which just 18 months ago announced controversial cost

:06:07.:06:09.

cutting plans to close two fire But after those plans were scrapped

:06:10.:06:12.

and a new boss took charge, there's It's been a busy weekend for the

:06:13.:06:38.

crew at this fire station in Leicestershire. They are part of a

:06:39.:06:42.

team of 350 full-time firefighters work across the county. Now the

:06:43.:06:47.

service is looking for another 25 front line staff to join them. It's

:06:48.:06:53.

the first time in five years that we've recruited any new full-time

:06:54.:06:57.

members of staff and it is important because it is a new opportunity for

:06:58.:07:01.

the service to bring some new people into it to change its diverse nature

:07:02.:07:05.

and hopefully provide is a resource moving forward that will last 40

:07:06.:07:11.

years. The news today is a huge turnaround from Leicestershire Fire

:07:12.:07:13.

Service. Just 18 months ago there was widespread discontent at

:07:14.:07:18.

cost-cutting plans to close two fire stations and cut up to 90 front line

:07:19.:07:26.

firefighting jobs. Protest signed petitions saw those controversial

:07:27.:07:29.

plans rapidly scrapped. The new chief was put in charge. He started

:07:30.:07:36.

off by cutting his own salary and those of his senior management

:07:37.:07:42.

teams. It is looking at savings that do not affect the front line and

:07:43.:07:47.

that is what we have done. At times it has been tough but the reality is

:07:48.:07:51.

there's a lot more focus on positivity in organisation. Unions

:07:52.:08:00.

say morale has turned around. Morale was on the floor. People were having

:08:01.:08:04.

to move to Fire Services around the country just to keep a job. Now that

:08:05.:08:09.

we are recruiting again it is just a superb story. The recruitment drive

:08:10.:08:14.

began today and applications will be accepted for the next week. Why

:08:15.:08:17.

would anyone want to be a firefighter? Why wouldn't you, it is

:08:18.:08:22.

the best job in the world. I have been doing it for nearly 15 years

:08:23.:08:26.

and wouldn't want to do anything else. You have to want to help

:08:27.:08:30.

people and you do that in buckets in the Fire Service. The Fire Service

:08:31.:08:35.

expects nearly 3000 people to apply for the new posts.

:08:36.:08:36.

Forces across the East Midlands held a two minute silence today,

:08:37.:08:39.

for a policeman who was killed in the Westminster attack.

:08:40.:08:41.

Thousands of officers lined the streets of Central London

:08:42.:08:44.

The 48-year-old was stabbed to death outside Parliament last month.

:08:45.:08:48.

Among those paying their respects were officers from Nottinghamshire.

:08:49.:08:55.

Because we are all one big family at the end of the day.

:08:56.:08:58.

Regardless of where we are in the country,

:08:59.:09:00.

You know, for Great Britain as a whole,

:09:01.:09:06.

together, I think it's really important at times like this we come

:09:07.:09:13.

A teenager has died after he fell through the roof of a building

:09:14.:09:16.

Police were called to an industrial unit at Derwent Works in Ambergate

:09:17.:09:20.

The 19-year-old was taken to hospital where he

:09:21.:09:23.

Officers say they're aren't treating his death as suspicious,

:09:24.:09:26.

and are preparing a file for the coroner.

:09:27.:09:33.

World leading technology is being developed in the East Midlands

:09:34.:09:36.

which can predict where flooding will take place in our cities.

:09:37.:09:38.

Loughborough University has designed a system which combines weather

:09:39.:09:41.

It could mean the emergency services are able to swing

:09:42.:09:44.

When flooding causes damage and destruction there is often the

:09:45.:10:04.

debate over how problems could have been avoided. Loughborough

:10:05.:10:07.

University could have the answer. Outside of London and Birmingham,

:10:08.:10:13.

Leicester City is the third most vulnerable city to surface water

:10:14.:10:17.

flooding in the UK. A powerful system that uses maps of known flood

:10:18.:10:23.

areas and live weather data to predict flooding two days in

:10:24.:10:29.

advance. It may not necessarily cause flooding depending on the

:10:30.:10:32.

topographical characteristics and the drainage capacity at the site.

:10:33.:10:40.

It is where it accumulates on the surface and in low-lying areas and

:10:41.:10:42.

this allows you to look at surface water data. As more cities and towns

:10:43.:10:49.

have added that could be used across the country and around the world.

:10:50.:10:55.

What we can see here is the areas of known flooding from surface water in

:10:56.:11:00.

Leicester, shown in the tank, and overlaid on top are the forecasts

:11:01.:11:03.

for my system which show the real-time simulation of flooding. No

:11:04.:11:11.

April showers today but this is an area that has flooded in the past

:11:12.:11:15.

and the academics hope their system means people will know where they

:11:16.:11:19.

need to put sandbags out in advance and the emergency services will know

:11:20.:11:21.

the areas they may need to offer help. With this tool we will be able

:11:22.:11:28.

to predict what roads meet flood and we can divert resources. It makes

:11:29.:11:32.

them respond quicker and helps them avoid getting stuck in flooded

:11:33.:11:37.

roads. The system may also be available on smartphones and online

:11:38.:11:41.

to people can get detailed flooding predictions. Could have done with

:11:42.:11:46.

some of that in Bradgate Park. Visitors to that popular beauty

:11:47.:11:50.

spot are being warned of the dangers of discarded

:11:51.:11:52.

cigarettes and barbeques. It comes after a fire

:11:53.:11:54.

at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire at the weekend, which destroyed

:11:55.:11:56.

an area of dead bracken. Victoria Hicks is there

:11:57.:11:59.

for us this evening. Good evening. You join me from a

:12:00.:12:11.

beautiful part of Leicestershire. This is Bradgate Park, a public park

:12:12.:12:18.

838 acres of countryside, enjoyed by half a million visitors, but this is

:12:19.:12:24.

why we are here this evening. That area of bracken destroyed by fire at

:12:25.:12:29.

the weekend. Here to tell a meme orders Peter from the Bradgate Park

:12:30.:12:35.

Trust. There was a fire in this area of bracken behind as we think this

:12:36.:12:42.

started by a discarded cigarette. The area is equivalent to 20 average

:12:43.:12:46.

sized gardens so it is sizeable. Staff were quick to put it out? They

:12:47.:12:52.

put into practice the emergency plan on using fire beaters and what

:12:53.:12:55.

stories and had it very much under control by the time the fire brigade

:12:56.:12:59.

came along. The concern was that could have spread further? It could

:13:00.:13:04.

have been so much worse. It could have been catastrophic and we were

:13:05.:13:08.

very lucky on this occasion. What is your advice to visitors this

:13:09.:13:13.

evening? Be careful. If you're a smoker watch where you're throwing

:13:14.:13:19.

the cigarettes. Glass can act has a magnifying glass to the Sun's Reeves

:13:20.:13:23.

and we're looking at the reasons behind this. When the Rangers

:13:24.:13:26.

emptied the bends the founder and seven used barbecues the band to

:13:27.:13:32.

protect and preserve the site of special scientific interest. In

:13:33.:13:35.

other news, there are big changes

:13:36.:13:38.

for visitors to the Royal Derby hospital from today,

:13:39.:13:41.

as a new one-way system Road marking crews have spent

:13:42.:13:43.

the weekend getting the site ready. The changes to the loop road

:13:44.:13:46.

include more entrances and the introduction

:13:47.:13:48.

of traffic lights. Hospital bosses are hoping it'll

:13:49.:13:50.

help reduce congestion and make it easier for visitors to get

:13:51.:13:52.

on and off the site. Nottingham is to become home to one

:13:53.:13:56.

of the cleanest and greenest 53 new gas double deckers

:13:57.:13:59.

are being built for Nottingham city They're due to be in

:14:00.:14:03.

service early in June. The operator received

:14:04.:14:06.

almost ?4.5 million from They'll produce 84% less greenhouse

:14:07.:14:08.

gases than a normal double decker. A group of student rowers

:14:09.:14:25.

in Leicester are all pulling in the same direction to clear up

:14:26.:14:29.

a mass of rubbish and debris It threatens to damage their boats

:14:30.:14:32.

and Jo Healey down on the banks of the River Soar this evening

:14:33.:14:36.

to see what they've pulled out. As you can see, the University

:14:37.:14:57.

rowing club are just training just now only River Soar, they have about

:14:58.:15:02.

60 student members, and it is hard to believe I am sitting here buying

:15:03.:15:06.

in the middle of the city of Leicester, it is so beautiful, but

:15:07.:15:11.

it is really popular year not surprisingly with dog walkers and

:15:12.:15:15.

cyclists and people picnicking and with people using the water, and

:15:16.:15:20.

with a lot of people comes letter and that is what the students want

:15:21.:15:26.

to clear up. They are fishing out the mess again. There is plenty of

:15:27.:15:35.

it in the water and out of it. The other day we managed to collect a

:15:36.:15:41.

bit 26 bags of rubbish. Absolutely loads of letter. It is not really

:15:42.:15:45.

nice to see because we are on the river all the time and rubbish just

:15:46.:15:51.

goes on the river. They are training on the never most days at the moment

:15:52.:15:55.

preparing for the British University Championships in three weeks' time.

:15:56.:16:00.

With boats costing around ?3000 a piece any damage is costly in time

:16:01.:16:05.

and money. If the letter gets into the money it is not good for the

:16:06.:16:11.

boats. It can definitely damage boats if we hit the orders on the

:16:12.:16:16.

bottles and traffic cones. And it's not unusual to pull out things like

:16:17.:16:21.

this. These really do cause quite a lot of damage to the boats so that

:16:22.:16:25.

is priority, to get them of the river. You don't get many motor

:16:26.:16:32.

bikes, surely? Not as much as pushbikes and trolleys. How much

:16:33.:16:38.

damage do these causes? Quite a lot of time they are low-down but

:16:39.:16:41.

occasionally you will have handles sticking up which can cause quite a

:16:42.:16:47.

lot of damage. Try to get these out! It is about getting it all out but

:16:48.:16:51.

they also want to give something back and they have made a pledge to

:16:52.:17:01.

dredge every month from now on. That will be very welcome to the ears of

:17:02.:17:06.

the canal and rivers trust which cares for the River Soar and over

:17:07.:17:10.

2000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, and just today

:17:11.:17:14.

they have announced that the cost of clearing those waterways and amounts

:17:15.:17:19.

to ?1 million every year. They pull out everything from golf buggies to

:17:20.:17:25.

TV sets to thousands of carrier bags every single year, and today their

:17:26.:17:34.

message is enough is enough. I will be talking to a representative of

:17:35.:17:37.

that trust at 10:25pm so don't miss it.

:17:38.:17:42.

Something is happening Leicester City because we lost a football

:17:43.:17:44.

match? It's an historic week

:17:45.:17:45.

for Leicester City. Their fans have started heading

:17:46.:17:47.

towards Madrid for the first leg of their Champions League quarter

:17:48.:17:50.

finals on Wednesday. In a moment - we'll hear

:17:51.:17:51.

from defender Robert Huth - But Leicester go into the game

:17:52.:17:54.

having lost for the first time under The start was awful. Within 30

:17:55.:18:12.

seconds Everton had sliced through the defence and taken the lead in

:18:13.:18:16.

the quickest premiership goal this season. It was Leicester's time to

:18:17.:18:26.

break. The team was much changed as they prepare for a dead but the

:18:27.:18:30.

spirit was the same. Eight direct free kick giving them the lead. Only

:18:31.:18:35.

23 minutes had passed when Everton scored the fourth goal of the game.

:18:36.:18:41.

One thing that will need to change, poor defending of the set piece that

:18:42.:18:46.

saw them hand Everton the lead. The six Jim winning run was over which

:18:47.:18:52.

matters little if the change helps with fresh legs in Spain. A key men

:18:53.:18:58.

at the heart of the defence that game is Robert Harris.

:18:59.:19:04.

And he's been speaking to Nikesh Rughani ahead

:19:05.:19:07.

of the most glamorous game in Leicester City's history.

:19:08.:19:12.

Robert Huth is the most senior man in the Leicester defence going into

:19:13.:19:24.

Wednesday's game. It almost looked like the dream is over but we

:19:25.:19:28.

managed to turn it around at home with an unbelievable performance. An

:19:29.:19:34.

absolutely awesome night from the start to the end, the supporters

:19:35.:19:39.

were absolutely amazing and we managed to hold on. Fans have

:19:40.:19:57.

enjoyed a wonderful tonight so far. I want to be a supportive and travel

:19:58.:20:00.

through Europe and support the team, it must be amazing, and I know it is

:20:01.:20:06.

difficult in a bigger stadium but whenever you see them, you can sense

:20:07.:20:11.

they are having a good time and want to pursue one and get you through

:20:12.:20:16.

the game. Atletico Madrid asked twice runners-up in this competition

:20:17.:20:19.

in recent years and with a rich history of winning silverware they

:20:20.:20:22.

are all surely be the biggest test this season. Is it the biggest game

:20:23.:20:28.

in the club's yesterday, quarterfinal of the league? It will

:20:29.:20:33.

be, a big game, no mistake about that. It is not the biggest game.

:20:34.:20:44.

We're not getting a trophy for it, so fit as a final maybe we can talk

:20:45.:20:48.

about that. It is a quarterfinal and that is it. More on that game

:20:49.:20:55.

throughout the week. In the Championship,

:20:56.:20:56.

Nottingham Forest's teenage striker Ben Brereton has been named

:20:57.:20:58.

Apprentice of the Year. He was the only local winner

:20:59.:21:02.

at the annual English Football Ben Brereton again caught the eye

:21:03.:21:17.

this weekend. It was an impressive performance by Forest that the City

:21:18.:21:23.

ground and they were well worth the 2-0 victory with this goal in the

:21:24.:21:28.

second half. A happy return to Birmingham city for the manager who

:21:29.:21:34.

was sacked last year. Birmingham responded in the second half and

:21:35.:21:38.

looked like the game would end in a draw but Derby's unbeaten run and

:21:39.:21:42.

their slim hopes of meeting the play-offs were secured with a late

:21:43.:21:44.

goal from Paul Ince. In League Two - Mansfield slipped to

:21:45.:21:45.

13th as they went down to Doncaster. Mansfield had defended stoutly -

:21:46.:21:49.

trying to deny Doncaster the win that would give

:21:50.:21:51.

them automatic promotion. But they finally caved in -

:21:52.:21:53.

and despite please not to invade the pitch -

:21:54.:21:55.

the South Yorkshire fans Notts County are in promotion form -

:21:56.:21:57.

trouble is they had such a wretched They turned around a losing position

:21:58.:22:06.

Tigers and Bath on equal points It began with the story of the

O'Connors, Brendan scoring the opening try the lighting Matt

O'Connor, his first game of the new head coach. It got even better for

:22:50.:22:56.

Tigers fans in the crowd of 60 2000. A clever kick and chase gave them a

:22:57.:23:02.

stronghold on the match. For much of it, Tigers lead but two late tries

:23:03.:23:09.

by Watson gave Bath the win and ensures a nail-biting run into the

:23:10.:23:14.

end of the season. That's it for tonight and we are alive in Madrid

:23:15.:23:19.

tomorrow night. Sadly we are not but Natalie is.

:23:20.:23:21.

Now, we're calling all coffee lovers, because a businessman

:23:22.:23:23.

is using one of Nottingham's few remaining red phone boxes

:23:24.:23:25.

Mobile phones mean the number of payphones has declined

:23:26.:23:29.

So the redundant phone kiosks have been turned

:23:30.:23:31.

into all manner of things - lending libraries, pint sized pubs

:23:32.:23:34.

We sent Carol Hinds to the Dialing In for a capuccino with its owner.

:23:35.:23:49.

It has taken 18 months for a look thought to take the seed, or should

:23:50.:23:58.

that be been of an idea, and make at Nottingham's smallest coffee shop.

:23:59.:24:02.

He is renting a former payphone in the city centre to serve hot drinks

:24:03.:24:10.

to those that call in. I worked for the local coffee grinder so all the

:24:11.:24:15.

coffee is locally roasted and we have a couple of local bakers for

:24:16.:24:20.

goods. It has its own electric input and a couple of water tanks so I

:24:21.:24:25.

have water supply and the West supply. There is a fridge for milk

:24:26.:24:30.

and cold drinks and the coffee machine obviously does a lot. Today

:24:31.:24:35.

has been the first day for business. Really good. Reactions mixed from

:24:36.:24:42.

amazement and curiosity, probably the main two. It is a small space

:24:43.:24:48.

but he has plans to grow the business. We have a couple of other

:24:49.:24:53.

phone boxes we are looking at at the moment in Nottingham that we are

:24:54.:24:57.

going to do a carbon copy thing and get a few of them. It is good fun.

:24:58.:25:03.

It is a second calling for the iconic red phone box and he wants

:25:04.:25:11.

everybody passing by two Dial C for Coffee.

:25:12.:25:17.

It was jolly hot over the weekend. But it wasn't today.

:25:18.:25:26.

Not at all. We had temperatures over 22 yesterday but today, only around

:25:27.:25:35.

12 the maximum temperature. We had blue skies for a time and thank you

:25:36.:25:38.

very much to our weather watchers but then it started to get more

:25:39.:25:43.

slowly over the course of the day and just the odd shower spotted

:25:44.:25:48.

earlier on. As we have a look at tomorrow, a very similar picture,

:25:49.:25:52.

starting off on a bright note and then the cloud increases but towards

:25:53.:25:56.

tomorrow evening we expect sunny spells to retire. Compared to the

:25:57.:26:01.

weekend with bright orange colours the pale yellows are coming in so

:26:02.:26:05.

the chilly fuel is continuing but we have been spoiled by the weekend and

:26:06.:26:09.

the high-pressure because for springtime it is not actually that

:26:10.:26:13.

bad with the high-pressure just about clinging on, eight weak cold

:26:14.:26:17.

front coming to us potentially midweek potentially bringing some

:26:18.:26:22.

rain. With the charts we can see the clouds starting to clear to this

:26:23.:26:25.

evening and under clear skies the temperature will start to fall away,

:26:26.:26:30.

still the odd shower around and we expect loads of around six Celsius.

:26:31.:26:36.

As we look towards tomorrow morning we will start again only reasonably

:26:37.:26:40.

bright note and then the cloud will increase over the course of the day.

:26:41.:26:45.

Where the thick clouds comes in, the chance of an odd isolated shower and

:26:46.:26:50.

highs of around 14 but turning cleaner towards the evening. The

:26:51.:26:55.

potential for some rain on the way on Wednesday with the temperature of

:26:56.:27:00.

around 12 Celsius. I will leave you with the outlook and we have

:27:01.:27:04.

temperatures on the way of around 12 Celsius and sunshine and showers.

:27:05.:27:09.

I bet it is warmer than that in Madrid! It is, the fans are already

:27:10.:27:17.

sending pictures. See you on the late edition, goodbye.
