And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Maurice Flynn.

:00:15.:00:17.

Today was thought to be the busiest shopping day of the year

:00:18.:00:21.

with an estimated ten million people out buying presents and food.

:00:22.:00:24.

High streets and shopping centres across the East Midlands have been

:00:25.:00:27.

Retailers have been building up to the big day, many of them

:00:28.:00:34.

spending an absolute fortune on television adverts

:00:35.:00:36.

because it is worth it for them, they make so much of their profit

:00:37.:00:40.

It's difficult to judge of today has been busier than previous years,

:00:41.:00:47.

but the shoppers we spoke to seemed to be getting what they need.

:00:48.:00:50.

We're going round and round making sure we get everything we want

:00:51.:00:53.

and we're going to go out tomorrow because it's going to be really busy

:00:54.:00:56.

tomorrow so hopefully we'll get everything today.

:00:57.:00:59.

We usually do it on Christmas Eve, but we decided to come a day early

:01:00.:01:03.

this year so we've just about got everything we need.

:01:04.:01:05.

It's been quite cheap in lots of places.

:01:06.:01:09.

You're a business from Poland and you've signed up

:01:10.:01:11.

to be here and you're going to stay here permanently?

:01:12.:01:13.

We're going to stay here a long time.

:01:14.:01:18.

It's my first time in England and I will stay here for more.

:01:19.:01:21.

When closing and it's almost empty, we go and party!

:01:22.:01:31.

It's not normally this quick, so I've got lots of gifts

:01:32.:01:34.

for Christmas and got the girls with me to choose

:01:35.:01:37.

It's really busy, I didn't think it would actually be this busy,

:01:38.:01:42.

Did you spend in the pre-Christmas sales?

:01:43.:01:49.

I got quite a lot during the first month to get my

:01:50.:01:54.

Retailers have been taking advantage by running later this week,

:01:55.:02:00.

but here at Highcross they close at 5:30pm tomorrow night.

:02:01.:02:04.

With Christmas Eve on a Saturday, it's expected to be very busy.

:02:05.:02:13.

Two men have died on a Leicestershire farm in an incident

:02:14.:02:15.

Police were called to Normanton near Bottesford yesterday.

:02:16.:02:20.

Postmortem examinations are being carried out

:02:21.:02:22.

The Health and Safety Executive is also investigating,

:02:23.:02:31.

The Government's confirmed that bird flu has been

:02:32.:02:35.

The Chief Veterinary Officer says a wild wigeon tested positive

:02:36.:02:40.

for the H5N8 strain of avian influenza, which is currently

:02:41.:02:42.

Farms across the East Midlands have been taking

:02:43.:02:45.

Meanwhile, Public Health England says the risk

:02:46.:02:48.

Trading Standards officers are warning people not to be tempted

:02:49.:02:53.

by the lure of cheap goods when picking up

:02:54.:02:55.

Teams from Nottinghamshire have seized fake branded

:02:56.:03:01.

items from a warehouse, while in Leicestershire,

:03:02.:03:02.

hundreds of dangerous chargers have been confiscated.

:03:03.:03:04.

In a warehouse at County Hall in Glenfield in Leicestershire,

:03:05.:03:10.

officers from the county's Trading Standards department checked

:03:11.:03:12.

These piles of goods are just two months' worth of poor-quality

:03:13.:03:19.

objects seized by Trading Standards and the UK Border Force

:03:20.:03:22.

as they passed through East Midlands Airport,

:03:23.:03:25.

Electrical chargers pose a particular risk.

:03:26.:03:29.

Cheap electrical chargers are a real problem.

:03:30.:03:31.

They can be an electrocution risk or a fire risk

:03:32.:03:34.

One thing we would say is, definitely do not leave your

:03:35.:03:39.

In Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottingham Trading Standards

:03:40.:03:50.

recorded this footage when they raided a property

:03:51.:03:53.

where they seized 450 fake branded goods and counterfeit items

:03:54.:03:55.

The 56 brands included unsafe, fake items.

:03:56.:04:06.

They are not real, they're not the quality you'd expect.

:04:07.:04:10.

They will break, for a partner at best, at worst they can kill them

:04:11.:04:13.

because these electrical items are not tested.

:04:14.:04:21.

We are in the process of testing, but we believe they will be

:04:22.:04:25.

In Leicestershire, the officers will have a smashing

:04:26.:04:28.

time after Christmas, continuing to destroy items

:04:29.:04:30.

to ensure they are unsaleable before they are recycled.

:04:31.:04:37.

More than 200 people have signed a book of condolence

:04:38.:04:41.

for the family of Claire Nagle, who was murdered last

:04:42.:04:45.

Her husband, Vincent, died after being hit by a lorry

:04:46.:04:50.

St Stephen's Church in Borrowash has been opening its doors every day

:04:51.:04:58.

this week for people to leave their tributes.

:04:59.:05:02.

An operation to find a missing man from Derby has been relaunched 25

:05:03.:05:05.

Richard Gregory lived on Thornhill Road, and was 40

:05:06.:05:08.

when he failed to return from a holiday in March 1991.

:05:09.:05:11.

Money was withdrawn from his bank account in Plymouth a month later.

:05:12.:05:14.

An artist's impression has been commissioned

:05:15.:05:16.

of what he might look like today, as police renew their

:05:17.:05:18.

A charity in the East Midlands has been working to bring festive cheer

:05:19.:05:28.

to those struggling at Christmas, and give them a place to shelter.

:05:29.:05:31.

Framework in Nottingham is giving rough sleepers a bed

:05:32.:05:33.

and a place to celebrate the festivities this year.

:05:34.:05:35.

They offer emergency accommodation and say they're seeing increasing

:05:36.:05:37.

Rough sleeping increased, it doubled actually,

:05:38.:05:42.

in the five years to 2015 and we know it has gone

:05:43.:05:45.

It is increasing and if you are sleeping rough,

:05:46.:05:51.

there is a greater chance of you being attacked

:05:52.:05:53.

than there would be if you were just tucked up warm in your own home.

:05:54.:05:58.

I'll have your next Christmas Eve update tomorrow, but Kay's here now

:05:59.:06:01.

After all the today, tomorrow is looking mostly dry although the sad

:06:02.:06:22.

thing is we will hang onto that breeze so we're looking at a breezy

:06:23.:06:28.

night overnight but dry. Plenty of clear skies. That will change in the

:06:29.:06:31.

early hours when we start to get more in the way of cloud but

:06:32.:06:34.

elsewhere, clear skies and temperatures of around four Celsius

:06:35.:06:38.

but it will stay breezy. Christmas Eve will be bright and breezy to

:06:39.:06:41.

start the day off with all parts dry. Through the morning, a couple

:06:42.:06:47.

of showers but few and far between and in the afternoon all parts will

:06:48.:06:52.

be dry and bright but a fresh southwesterly breeze, temperatures

:06:53.:06:55.

around about eight or nine Celsius and then we get to the big night. It

:06:56.:07:00.

looks like Father Christmas is going to be on the mild side as we head

:07:01.:07:06.

overnight because we drag in the southwesterly air and through

:07:07.:07:09.

Christmas Day itself, temperatures rise. Probably not record-breaking

:07:10.:07:14.

but tides of 13 Celsius and will feel mild. It will stay dry but some

:07:15.:07:19.

rain as we head into Christmas Day night and into Boxing Day. Boxing

:07:20.:07:24.

Day itself looks dry and bright with some good spells of sunshine, high

:07:25.:07:27.

pressure building so things will settle down by Tuesday.

:07:28.:07:27.

In a few moments, a full national forecast, but for now I'll leave

:07:28.:07:31.

big day? Christmas Day. It will stay mild and temperatures could reach

:07:32.:07:37.

14, 15. He is down bet that the national picture.

:07:38.:07:43.

It will be more northern parts of the UK that see the worst of the

:07:44.:07:49.

weather. Another storm is developing in the Atlantic. This will turn into

:07:50.:07:59.

Storm Connor. This cloud has wrapped around storm Barbara. It brought

:08:00.:08:05.

gusty winds in the West. Some localised flooding in Scotland early

:08:06.:08:09.

on and the strongest winds in the north of Scotland approaching 80

:08:10.:08:13.

miles an hour. The amber window warning from the Met Office is about

:08:14.:08:18.

to expire. It remains windy overnight. In

:08:19.:08:19.
