Now on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:16.
And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Sarah Teale. | :00:17. | :00:18.
For years now, former footballer Alan Birchenall has campaigned | :00:19. | :00:21.
for defibrillators to be installed at sports grounds. | :00:22. | :00:23.
Last night his life was saved by one. | :00:24. | :00:25.
The football legend and Leicester City ambassador | :00:26. | :00:28.
collapsed at an awards event but he was saved by the emergency | :00:29. | :00:31.
He is affectionately known as the Birch. | :00:32. | :00:41.
Since the early 1970s, Alan Birchenall has been part of | :00:42. | :00:44.
As well as being a former player, he is also known for | :00:45. | :00:48.
While handing out awards at the Leicester | :00:49. | :00:52.
Mercury sports event last night, Alan collapsed because of | :00:53. | :00:58.
His life was saved by nurse Lisa Fereday. | :00:59. | :01:01.
She was there because her daughter was nominated | :01:02. | :01:03.
I started chest compressions and asked for the | :01:04. | :01:08.
automated defibrillator to be brought to me as soon as possible. | :01:09. | :01:10.
That was brought quickly to me and all the time, it | :01:11. | :01:15.
is obviously important to continue effective chest compressions, | :01:16. | :01:17.
When the automated defibrillator came, we attached it | :01:18. | :01:31.
which was obviously pivotal in saving his life. | :01:32. | :01:35.
After the fourth shock, he came round and was | :01:36. | :01:48.
The first thing he said to me was, wow, | :01:49. | :01:51.
This doctor has worked with Alan Birchenall at | :01:52. | :01:54.
public events to promote the use of defibrillators. | :01:55. | :01:56.
The very equipment which kept him alive. | :01:57. | :02:00.
There were two things that saved his | :02:01. | :02:05.
One was the immediate commencement of resuscitation, | :02:06. | :02:12.
compression of the heart and the second thing | :02:13. | :02:15.
was the defibrillator that was quickly available and the | :02:16. | :02:20.
Is it fair to say he has been overwhelmed by messages | :02:21. | :02:25.
I've warned him not to spend too much time trying to respond to them. | :02:26. | :02:36.
He is overwhelmed and overjoyed at the support he has had. | :02:37. | :02:41.
Leicester City have issued a statement thanking everyone who has | :02:42. | :02:45.
helped a lot for the messages of support. He give a message on | :02:46. | :02:51.
Facebook saying he hopes to have an operation tomorrow and be out of | :02:52. | :02:55.
hospital in the next few days. To all his well-wishers, he said you | :02:56. | :02:59.
know one of my favourite songs is Staying Alive. And we wish you a | :03:00. | :03:04.
speedy recovery. Breaking news now, | :03:05. | :03:05.
and in the last hour, the proposed takeover | :03:06. | :03:07.
of the club has collapsed. A consortium led by American John | :03:08. | :03:13.
Jay Moores had been in long negotiations to buy an 80 per cent | :03:14. | :03:16.
stake in the club. But tonight, current | :03:17. | :03:19.
owner Fawaz Al Hasawi said it was with regret | :03:20. | :03:23.
and disappointment that In a statement he said, we feel such | :03:24. | :03:25.
a deal as it stands is not in the interests of the long-term | :03:26. | :03:30.
future of our club. A 16-year-old boy has been | :03:31. | :03:33.
jailed for nine years for sexually assaulting two women | :03:34. | :03:37.
in Nottingham last autumn. The youth attacked a woman | :03:38. | :03:39.
in her twenties near the QMC Fifteen minutes later, | :03:40. | :03:42.
he attempted to rape a woman The judge called the attacks | :03:43. | :03:46.
violent and degrading. And said it was more shocking | :03:47. | :03:52.
that they were carried out They've both been affected terribly, | :03:53. | :03:54.
not wishing to leave the house alone, not wishing | :03:55. | :04:02.
to go to work anymore. Both females feel extremely | :04:03. | :04:04.
frightened and of course, this attack was in daylight, in the early | :04:05. | :04:10.
hours of the morning, so they've both made the | :04:11. | :04:14.
comment that it is not even as though it was | :04:15. | :04:18.
Next tonight - an act of cruelty against a cat which the RSPCA has | :04:19. | :04:24.
Just a warning - near the start, Geeta Pendse's report contains | :04:25. | :04:34.
Enjoying attention from her owner, Patrick. | :04:35. | :04:38.
But 24 hours ago, Millie was attacked outside | :04:39. | :04:40.
Patrick's private CCTV camera captured the shocking moment when a | :04:41. | :04:48.
My cat was just sat there, being friendly and | :04:49. | :04:52.
I felt sick, I felt angry to think that | :04:53. | :05:00.
somebody thinks they have the right to do that to a defenceless animal. | :05:01. | :05:04.
Millie's suffered swelling to her jaw and is now being treated for a | :05:05. | :05:07.
Determined to find out who carried out the attack, | :05:08. | :05:11.
Patrick posted the footage onto Facebook and | :05:12. | :05:13.
The RSPCA are now investigating and appealing for | :05:14. | :05:19.
They say inflicting such an horrific attack on a | :05:20. | :05:22.
defenceless cat is sickening and it is | :05:23. | :05:23.
important we track down the | :05:24. | :05:25.
One football result for you now, and defeat for Derby County, | :05:26. | :05:33.
In ice hockey, it's a huge weekend for Nottingham Panthers. | :05:34. | :05:40.
They are trying to make history as the first British club | :05:41. | :05:43.
They played their first game today and won, as Colin Hazelden | :05:44. | :05:47.
Well, we are well underway now in this Continental Cup Final weekend. | :05:48. | :05:54.
These are the hometown sport fans, this noisy lot. | :05:55. | :05:58.
Panthers playing their opening game of three this | :05:59. | :06:01.
afternoon could not have gone better. | :06:02. | :06:07.
Two goals from the captain carried them to victory | :06:08. | :06:09.
Setting up a fantastic couple of days tomorrow and on Sunday. | :06:10. | :06:13.
We played well today, particularly defensively. | :06:14. | :06:19.
We played a strong game, but what we've achieved this | :06:20. | :06:22.
afternoon, going into tomorrow, it will be all forgotten | :06:23. | :06:24.
Yes, as David Clark says, there's plenty more still to go. | :06:25. | :06:27.
Tomorrow at two o'clock your time, it's going to be quite an event. | :06:28. | :06:33.
It certainly will be, and there'll be live commentary | :06:34. | :06:35.
of that on the BBC Nottingham sport Facebook page. | :06:36. | :06:37.
So, it's goodbye from me, but with your weather now, here's Sara. | :06:38. | :06:46.
It was a wintry start to the day for some of us. Captured nicely by one | :06:47. | :06:52.
of our weather watchers in Loughborough. We still have a view | :06:53. | :06:59.
wintry showers deny and the weather warning is with regard to ice on | :07:00. | :07:05.
untreated surfaces. The showers are coming down through the Cheshire | :07:06. | :07:09.
gap, so they will be with us into the early hours. A few will produce | :07:10. | :07:15.
no for a time and it is a widespread frost and the bitterly cold night, | :07:16. | :07:23.
-3 -4 in rural parts. A cold and frosty start tomorrow, fewer | :07:24. | :07:29.
showers, a bright sky, winds light and highs five Celsius. This is the | :07:30. | :07:31.
outlook, the weather follows. 5-6 is the best we will have. It | :07:32. | :07:35.
stays cold into the beginning of next week as well | :07:36. | :07:45.
stop Good evening, a cold, icy night, but some others | :07:46. | :07:46. |
