A man has been charged after a supermarket in Derbyshire

had to be evacuated.

Police were called to the Tesco in Ilkeston on Friday night

after reports that a man was holding a knife and threatening

staff and customers.

No one was injured during the incident.

The 48-year-old man has been remanded into custody.

The number of emergency calls taken by East Midlands Ambulance Service

over the New Year was up on 2016 and staff have

continued to be busy today.

Over 1,100 999 calls were taken in the first

six hours of New Year's Day.

-- 2,900 calls.

Crews were called out for alcohol-related incidents, falls,

people with breathing problems and accidents on the roads.

For many Christmas and New Year is a time for indulgence,

but it can also be difficult for those living with very little.

Now a project in Nottinghamshire is hoping to build a network of fresh

food banks which will educate young people about how they can

help those in need.

Hannah Meredith reports.

In the very cold garden at this primary school,

pupils are working hard on the fruits of their labour.

We come and grow plants and vegetables.

We harvest them and send them to the drop-in centre and give

them to the homeless.

The Food Share Project trains young people to grow food and share

it with those in need.

The trouble is that most traditional food banks don't get fresh food,

so Food Share was setup to address that gap and, at the same time,

to enable children to really learn and understand

about complex social issues.

It is really important that they know that not everyone can

just nip to Asda and get whatever they want to eat.

The only good meal they will get is what they have had donated.

From carrots to cabbage, the children love being part of this

novel fresh food bank.

The best thing I have learned is how big rhubarb can get.

It is really good because we have a home and enough food

to eat and they haven't.

It feels really nice because I know that I'm giving

people meals every day.

The project has spread to other schools and with the help

of crowdfunding it is hoped the scheme will grow

as strong as these seedlings.

Now, open air swimming may not be your cup of tea on New Year's

Day, but it's clearly growing in popularity.

Almost 300 people - twice as many as last year -

took part in the annual dip at an outdoor pool

in Derbyshire today.

James Roberson went to meet some of those brave enough to take part!

You need to plunge in if you are intending to swim at the Lido

here on New Year's Day.

For some people the 10 degree water temperature was still too cold,

despite it being three times warmer than the air.

This is the fourth year the parish council has opened

the pool on January the 1st and it is clearly a hit.

I cannot quite believe how many people we've had

through the doors already.

Last year we had 150, and we've already had 80 in 20 minutes.

If you think that your intrepid reporter is crazy enough

to get in there with them, then I'm sorry but I'm not

as intrepid as they are.

It wasn't my idea, seems ridiculous now.

My sister wanted to do it and I came with her.

I guess it is New Year, new you.

"Come out of the water a new man", she said.

A terrible idea.

There are crazy people in bikinis there, oh my gosh!

It is so cold.

Uou only come for a small amount to times, so I thought it would be

a great start to the New Year.

I persuaded my friend to come in as well, but she did two

lengths and got out.

With warming beverages on hand, this year's swim attracted 284 people,

twice last year's total.

They hope to beat this record next year.

We have had our fair share of wet weather

across the East Midlands today.

This is the picture in Derbyshire earlier on, thank you to our weather

watcher for sending that in.

The front that was bringing the rain is sinking to the south and high

pressure is building to replace it, so we are expecting some

more settled weather for the next day or so.

Overnight tonight there are a few showers around in places,

some of those could be wintry, particularly over higher

ground and lows tonight of around one degree.

As we go towards tomorrow morning we had expecting a bright

but frosty start in places.

Variable amounts of cloud throughout the day, so not quite wall-to-wall

sunshine but still some decent sunny spells.

Chilly, though, with highs of around 4 degrees.

I will leave you with the outlook - bright but chilly weather on the way

for the next couple of days.
