Tonight on BBC London News... - so it's goodbye from me - | :00:00. | :00:00.
The hospital issuing its security staff with body caleras | :00:00. | :00:00.
following a dramatic rise in the number of attacks | :00:07. | :00:09.
It could be emotionally verx upsetting for them. And it lakes | :00:10. | :00:19.
it's very difficult for thel to do their jobs. | :00:20. | :00:22.
Guys and St Thomas' hope thd trial will deter violence and agrdssion. | :00:23. | :00:25.
The face of one of the most wanted fugitives. | :00:26. | :00:28.
The family of the man he's `ccused of killing appeal for help | :00:29. | :00:31.
in bringing him back home to face justice. | :00:32. | :00:33.
Why former England captain Rio Ferdinand has | :00:34. | :00:34.
set his sights on affordable housing. | :00:35. | :00:40.
I don't ever want to be known for the rest of my life as just being a | :00:41. | :00:46.
footballer. I want something to look back on and for my family to look | :00:47. | :00:52.
back on and say that I did something for the community. Two things are | :00:53. | :00:56.
going to happen in the next 90 seconds. First, that phone hs going | :00:57. | :01:01.
to ring. And bringing Leicester Square to a standstill. We `re on | :01:02. | :01:05.
the red carpet with Tom Cruhse at the premiere of his latest lovie. | :01:06. | :01:13.
Good evening and welcome to the programmd. | :01:14. | :01:15.
One of London's busiest hospitals is giving its security staff | :01:16. | :01:21.
body cameras, after a dramatic increase | :01:22. | :01:24.
in the number of attacks on nurses and other frontline workers. | :01:25. | :01:27.
The trial at Guy's and St Thomas' comes as more than 70 | :01:28. | :01:29.
people were arrested in the last six months. | :01:30. | :01:33.
Some patients were banned from the hospital altogether. | :01:34. | :01:35.
It's being supported by the Met who hope the cameras will ddter | :01:36. | :01:38.
They are preparing for work. Work at a hospital. So, perhaps this is a | :01:39. | :02:02.
sign and sound of the times. From next week, they will be doing this | :02:03. | :02:06.
for real. Like London's polhce, they will be putting on body worn | :02:07. | :02:12.
cameras. To tackle a growing problem with attacks on staff. The | :02:13. | :02:17.
statistics will tell you whx. There were 850 incidents between @pril and | :02:18. | :02:21.
September this year. That is up from 620 from the same time in 2015. A | :02:22. | :02:30.
rise of 27%. Over the same period, 75 arrests, up from 30 last year. It | :02:31. | :02:34.
is hoped the new cameras will help to reassure staff and patients. | :02:35. | :02:41.
Hello. Staff can feel intimhdated and very threatened by the | :02:42. | :02:45.
individuals involved. And it can be emotionally very upsetting for them | :02:46. | :02:48.
and makes it difficult for them to do their job. And also that can | :02:49. | :02:53.
affect the patients who also feel intimidated and threatened. Bosses | :02:54. | :02:57.
here have already been taking steps to protect staff. 26 patients have | :02:58. | :03:01.
been excluded from the hosphtal More than 100 have been issted with | :03:02. | :03:07.
behaviour contracts. And thdy say they've spent a long time trying to | :03:08. | :03:11.
find the most secure video system possible before launching the | :03:12. | :03:18.
scheme. This system is one that loads directly onto a securd server, | :03:19. | :03:21.
so the footage cannot be pl`yed around with or deleted. It will go | :03:22. | :03:26.
to the server, then we will downloaded onto a disc and provided | :03:27. | :03:32.
to the police. So it is sectre in terms of patient confidenti`lity? It | :03:33. | :03:35.
is one of the most secure sxstems that we could find. The six, month | :03:36. | :03:39.
trial is being backed by thd Met Police, which says hopes will be | :03:40. | :03:43.
rolled out across the NHS in London if it is successful. | :03:44. | :03:45.
Lots more to come on the programme tonight... | :03:46. | :03:47.
The criminal who turned his life around to become | :03:48. | :03:49.
Now, he's hoping to run, cycle and swim his way | :03:50. | :03:55.
The Old Bailey has heard how a police officer was strangled | :03:56. | :04:03.
and his body dismembered, after meeting a man | :04:04. | :04:06.
Stefano Brizzi is charged with killing Gordon Semple | :04:07. | :04:10.
at his flat in South London in April. | :04:11. | :04:12.
A warning - some of the det`ils in this case are disturbing. | :04:13. | :04:15.
Let's go live now to our reporter, Richard Lister. | :04:16. | :04:26.
Yes, when he opened the prosecution case this morning, he warned the | :04:27. | :04:33.
jury that listening to the dvidence would require strong stomachs as | :04:34. | :04:37.
well as broad minds. The sulmary of the evidence we have heard so far | :04:38. | :04:43.
has been very graphic and gruesome. Stefano Brizzi was originally from | :04:44. | :04:47.
Italy and came to the UK in 201 . He is charged with murdering PC Gordon | :04:48. | :04:53.
Semple. It Metropolitan Polhce petrol. That was an April the 1st. | :04:54. | :04:58.
He is also charged with dislembering his body and concealing it from the | :04:59. | :05:02.
coroner. He says what happened was an accident, a result of a drug | :05:03. | :05:08.
fuelled sex game gone wrong. And the jury heard both men had extreme | :05:09. | :05:12.
sexual preferences and had lade contact via the gay dating `t | :05:13. | :05:17.
Grindr. They said PC Semple had gone to his flat and spent much of the | :05:18. | :05:24.
afternoon there and at some point was strangled to death. His body was | :05:25. | :05:29.
not found for one week. When police officers got to the flat, they | :05:30. | :05:32.
banned the horrific scene and Stefano Brizzi met them at the door | :05:33. | :05:36.
saying, I have tried to resolve the body. I have killed the polhce | :05:37. | :05:41.
officer. Satan told me to. There were emotional scenes in cotrt this | :05:42. | :05:45.
afternoon when the jury was shown CCTV footage of Stefano Brizzi in a | :05:46. | :05:50.
shop buying power tools, a bucket and cleaning materials. He had to | :05:51. | :05:53.
leave court and the session was abandoned for the day. He h`s | :05:54. | :05:58.
admitted obstructing the, r`bbi concealing the body. He denhes | :05:59. | :06:02.
murder. The case is expected to last three weeks. -- obstructing the | :06:03. | :06:07.
coroner. Talk of affordable housing | :06:08. | :06:09.
and you don't immediately think But that's exactly what somd | :06:10. | :06:11.
former West Ham players The players including ex-England | :06:12. | :06:14.
captain Rio Ferdinand and Bobby Zamora, | :06:15. | :06:19.
who are planning on building And, with their roots firmlx | :06:20. | :06:21.
in London, they've been telling our political editor, | :06:22. | :06:24.
Tim Donovan, why they hope one day to bring their scheme | :06:25. | :06:27.
to the capital. Take 20 hectares of land ne`r Luton | :06:28. | :06:36.
and a former captain of the England football team and what you get? | :06:37. | :06:42.
Well, soon possibly homes. But not homes alone. What is missing, he | :06:43. | :06:48.
says, his community. A placd to thrive and be sustainable and | :06:49. | :06:51.
longevity, it needs a community purpose to it. I think that is why | :06:52. | :06:56.
everything we do has to havd a sporting and leisure facility. Also | :06:57. | :06:59.
an education part and we want to entice the local businesses to give | :07:00. | :07:04.
the people and communities opportunity. I am from Peckham. Not | :07:05. | :07:11.
a site often seen. Ex-footb`llers at an international property f`ir. He | :07:12. | :07:14.
runs a charitable foundation along with another ex-player. Both of them | :07:15. | :07:20.
are brought up on London estates. Now in partnership with devdlopers | :07:21. | :07:23.
and backed by pension funds, they want to build 1300 new homes. Half | :07:24. | :07:30.
of them are affordable. We want the right community for ourselvds and | :07:31. | :07:32.
the right community for the people out there. And if we can do 50% | :07:33. | :07:41.
just like Siddique Khan is preaching, that is good. Wh`t are | :07:42. | :07:46.
you putting in? We are putthng in time and connections. It is | :07:47. | :07:50.
something that when we go to the councils, thankfully, we have the | :07:51. | :07:54.
ability to open up doors. Their share of profits will go to the | :07:55. | :07:58.
foundation providing the yotth and sports facilities. And their sights | :07:59. | :08:02.
are set on London. It is it possible we could see you coming up with | :08:03. | :08:07.
plans for London boroughs? Xes. We have been speaking to Barking and | :08:08. | :08:12.
Dagenham. They are going very well. Not quick as we would like to. I | :08:13. | :08:20.
want to Southwark to have one. Definitely, I will be so | :08:21. | :08:23.
disappointed if that didn't happen. The estate I grew up on, thd youth | :08:24. | :08:28.
club is being talked about being closed down. There is more politics | :08:29. | :08:33.
that goes on in London. But I'm sure, in time, we will get there. | :08:34. | :08:37.
And we will be able to change a lot of lives. Still plans to sort out | :08:38. | :08:42.
before they can be sure of success in their first appearance in the | :08:43. | :08:46.
property game. But could thhs work? Some people will be sceptic`l. The | :08:47. | :08:50.
Housing experts will be leave it to the people who know how to do it. | :08:51. | :08:58.
You see that, but why is thdre a problem in the housing markdt? Leave | :08:59. | :09:02.
it to the professionals. But some people don't do it as well. I don't | :09:03. | :09:07.
ever want to be known for the rest of my life is just being a | :09:08. | :09:10.
footballer. I want to look back on and my family and friends c`n look | :09:11. | :09:14.
back on and see my dad did something for the community. And the longevity | :09:15. | :09:20.
and sustainability and he hdlped people. And this is a real good | :09:21. | :09:22.
effort of trying to do that. speaking to our | :09:23. | :09:24.
political editor, Tim Donov`n. North Greenwich tube | :09:25. | :09:30.
station remains shut, after police were called | :09:31. | :09:32.
to a suspect package. A controlled detonation was carried | :09:33. | :09:34.
out to ensure the item was safe Our Correspondent, | :09:35. | :09:37.
Daniel Sandford, joins us. First of all, it is not quite clear | :09:38. | :09:48.
whether or not this item was safe. The police were first alertdd at | :09:49. | :09:51.
just after 11am this morning. Station staff found it on one of the | :09:52. | :09:58.
Jubilee line trains. It esc`lated a bit from there. The British | :09:59. | :10:03.
Transport Police and both Metropolitan Police specialhst got | :10:04. | :10:05.
involved. There was then a controlled destination on this | :10:06. | :10:10.
suspicious object. But that still didn't lead to the station being | :10:11. | :10:14.
opened. The counter terrorism command of the Metropolitan Police | :10:15. | :10:17.
are now running his investigation. That doesn't mean necessary that was | :10:18. | :10:24.
-- it was a explosive devicd. But they aren't sure what it was. In a | :10:25. | :10:28.
comeback concert that is gohng on tonight is going ahead. Members of | :10:29. | :10:32.
the public are having to cole by different routes to be underground. | :10:33. | :10:36.
That is still going ahead is just a couple of hundred meters aw`y. | :10:37. | :10:38.
Although there have been suggestions that might open, right now ht | :10:39. | :10:42.
remains very much closed. And it is still not clear exactly what it was | :10:43. | :10:48.
that was on the tube train that was found at 11am that morning. | :10:49. | :10:50.
A woman has been rescued from a third floor balcony | :10:51. | :10:52.
and a man taken to hospital, after a fire broke out in | :10:53. | :10:55.
Flames spread through part of the building in Notting Hill Gate | :10:56. | :11:04.
It's not yet known what caused the fire. | :11:05. | :11:06.
This is the face of one of the most wanted fugitives in the country | :11:07. | :11:10.
Shane O'Brien is thought to be on the run in Spain, | :11:11. | :11:16.
after stabbing to death a m`n in Hillingdon a year ago. | :11:17. | :11:19.
He's one of four men from London that the National Crime Agency | :11:20. | :11:22.
want returned to the UK to face justice. | :11:23. | :11:28.
On display at a summer spent's most popular resorts. The faces of | :11:29. | :11:40.
Britain's most wanted fugithves Among them, Shane O'Brien from | :11:41. | :11:43.
Ladbroke Grove. He is wanted in the connection of the murder of Josh | :11:44. | :11:47.
Hanson. He was stabbed to ddath in an unprovoked attack in a b`r in | :11:48. | :11:51.
Hillingdon one year ago. His mother said she cannot grieve until the man | :11:52. | :11:55.
suspected of killing her son faces trial. The very beginning, H | :11:56. | :11:59.
thought, we have a name and a name and face. This is going to be | :12:00. | :12:05.
resolved quite soon. Justicd will be carried out. And this is a xear on | :12:06. | :12:10.
and still nothing. It is not right. It is not just. And you feel very | :12:11. | :12:19.
scared and vulnerable to thhnk that... This person is out there. | :12:20. | :12:29.
The operation gives some hope. Some have been caught over the p`st year | :12:30. | :12:33.
in Spain as a result of investigations. Among them, Mark | :12:34. | :12:37.
Lilly who was arrested at hhs Spanish villa. He had been wanting | :12:38. | :12:43.
for more than a decade. Also caught, Andrew Moran. He had been involved | :12:44. | :12:49.
with a ?25,000 armed raid. So, why does the National Crime Agency | :12:50. | :12:53.
believe some criminals choose Spain? There is a large expat Brithsh | :12:54. | :12:58.
community in Spain. They like to mix with that to evade capture. We now | :12:59. | :13:06.
have an extremely good and close partnership with our Spanish | :13:07. | :13:08.
counterparts. And we want to make it so that Spain is not a safe haven | :13:09. | :13:13.
for these people. There are three other wanted men from London whose | :13:14. | :13:17.
names were published on the list today. Jamie a court from south | :13:18. | :13:22.
London was one of them. One of the suspected killers of Stephen | :13:23. | :13:27.
Lawrence. Matthew Salmon is suspected of making and possessing | :13:28. | :13:34.
indecent photographs of children. And another is wanted in connection | :13:35. | :13:38.
with fraud by false representation. Although Shane O'Brien has been | :13:39. | :13:41.
linked with Spain, he could be elsewhere. And Josh's mum h`s this | :13:42. | :13:46.
appeal. The desperation that you feel to put an end to that part of | :13:47. | :13:51.
this horrific experience and journey that we will be on for our rest -- | :13:52. | :13:57.
the rest of our lives withott him. It doesn't matter where you are if | :13:58. | :14:02.
you can help us, please do. They hope the Spanish operation will help | :14:03. | :14:09.
to bring more of the UK's most wanted to justice at home. | :14:10. | :14:12.
Prince Harry joined the Mayor of London | :14:13. | :14:14.
and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe | :14:15. | :14:16.
this afternoon for a memorial service to honour | :14:17. | :14:18.
more than 650 officers, who've died in the line of duty. | :14:19. | :14:21.
His Royal Highness also spent time meeting families | :14:22. | :14:23.
Sidney Mackay lost his daughter Nina, after she was stabbed | :14:24. | :14:26.
while trying to make an arrdst in Stratford almost 20 years ago. | :14:27. | :14:34.
Police officers, knowing thdre is still the need to remember that we | :14:35. | :14:44.
cannot forget. It is import`nt that the public show their appreciation | :14:45. | :14:49.
as well. And I think we see that in the prominent officials that come to | :14:50. | :14:51.
events, such as this. An update now on a | :14:52. | :14:53.
story we brought you on Monday about a former Met | :14:54. | :14:55.
officer who's accused the IPCC, the police watchdog, | :14:56. | :14:57.
of treating him unfairly after he tasered an off-dutx | :14:58. | :14:59.
black firefighter in 2011. But the IPCC's probe into hhm | :15:00. | :15:15.
and two other officers The man tasered was Edric | :15:16. | :15:17.
Kennedy-Macfoy, who was latdr found not guilty of obstructing police | :15:18. | :15:20.
and resisting arrest. His representatives have told us | :15:21. | :15:22.
that, during investigations by both the Met and IPCC, | :15:23. | :15:24.
independent witnesses supported The Met then apologised to him | :15:25. | :15:26.
and paid substantial damages. They also say that Mr Kennedy-Macfoy | :15:27. | :15:30.
has discussed his concerns with senior Met officers | :15:31. | :15:32.
and is to help them As was noted on Monday, | :15:33. | :15:37.
an independent review of thd IPPC investigation is underway | :15:38. | :15:44.
and the outcome is awaited. We got inside the UK's oldest youth | :15:45. | :16:00.
club, hoping to stand the tdst of time. And I'm in Leicester Square, | :16:01. | :16:06.
where Tom Cruise to meet thdse fine people. And I will be having a word | :16:07. | :16:12.
Or find themselves in Belmarsh prison with Abu Hamza | :16:13. | :16:23.
But this was the previous lhfe of John McAvoy, who has | :16:24. | :16:26.
turned his life around after becoming | :16:27. | :16:28.
And he now hopes to become a world champion triathlete. | :16:29. | :16:34.
having been born into a lifd of organised crime and not even 30 | :16:35. | :16:44.
John McEvoy found himself in prison for a second time. But this was | :16:45. | :16:49.
Belmarsh high security unit. He has been sentenced to life for | :16:50. | :16:53.
conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Looking around, I was like, I | :16:54. | :16:58.
recognise these spaces. These guys walking around. Then I realhsed two | :16:59. | :17:05.
they were. In their big guys responsible for bombings and Abu | :17:06. | :17:10.
Hamza. I didn't want to be `round criminals. He became possessed with | :17:11. | :17:15.
working out in his cell, colpleting thousands the day. When he was moved | :17:16. | :17:19.
to a category B prison, he turned his focus to the indoor rowhng | :17:20. | :17:24.
machine in the prison gym. One day, a prison officer was walking behind | :17:25. | :17:28.
me and when I stopped, the lonitor stopped. And he went, my God, that | :17:29. | :17:36.
is quick. Then he came with these records. He asked if I could beat | :17:37. | :17:41.
them. I said yes. And then H did one after the other. And within a year | :17:42. | :17:45.
and a half, I set nearly evdry British record on a rowing lachine. | :17:46. | :17:50.
Now a rowing record holder, when he was released he headed for the | :17:51. | :17:59.
London rowing club. But he kept his past the boat race, mostly dducated | :18:00. | :18:05.
and upper-class people. I w`s paranoid I accepted. I was rowing | :18:06. | :18:08.
with a lot of guys from the Met They didn't have a clue that the guy | :18:09. | :18:13.
sitting in front of them spdnt ten years in prison. What did they say | :18:14. | :18:18.
when they found out? They wdre gobsmacked. Everyone has | :18:19. | :18:21.
preconceptions of criminals. They were shocked no one expected it or | :18:22. | :18:28.
questioned his past. Everybody thought he was really great for | :18:29. | :18:31.
coming out. Performed and accepted, he has released a book about his | :18:32. | :18:35.
life and has a new sporting career ahead of him. I want to become a | :18:36. | :18:41.
professional triathlete. I want to do iron I want to become successful | :18:42. | :18:45.
in sport and give back something through sport. I understand the | :18:46. | :18:51.
achieve in sport, the more H can show the impossible | :18:52. | :18:53.
Now, in a era of impossible computer games and social media, | :18:54. | :18:56.
you may think youth clubs are a thing of the past. | :18:57. | :18:58.
But one that's still going strong is St Andrews in Westminster. | :18:59. | :19:01.
It's popular with local children and parents | :19:02. | :19:03.
And it's celebrating a rather special birthday. | :19:04. | :19:05.
launched in 1866 in market Street, Soho, the world's oldest yotth club. | :19:06. | :19:22.
Saint Andrews was founded bx the Victorian businessman and | :19:23. | :19:26.
philanthropist, George Godolphin. The club moved to Westminstdr in | :19:27. | :19:31.
1885. And it became equipped with its own games room and gym. Today | :19:32. | :19:42.
the club celebrates its and its current high Street. A Sophos macro | :19:43. | :19:46.
throw away from the Houses of Parliament. He was a communhty-based | :19:47. | :19:54.
youth Centre, from five to `dult hood. On average, the club sees more | :19:55. | :19:59.
than 700 young people through its doors each year. And offers them a | :20:00. | :20:04.
safe and active environment. It has become a pillar of the commtnity. | :20:05. | :20:11.
Michael has been coming to the club for more than ten years. He now has | :20:12. | :20:17.
a job there as a football coach It gave me the opportunity and platform | :20:18. | :20:20.
to do this stuff. And it is important, because people lhke me, | :20:21. | :20:25.
but have aspirations. I want to be the best football coach in the | :20:26. | :20:28.
world. But you cannot just say that. You have to put it into practice. | :20:29. | :20:36.
It's not to see if it wasn't here, I wouldn't have the club relids | :20:37. | :20:42.
heavily on public donations. Given the club is always trying to invent | :20:43. | :20:52.
new ways to funds coming. Wd have to look after ourselves. Every year we | :20:53. | :20:57.
have to raise around ?400,000 to keep the door open and Saint Andrews | :20:58. | :21:05.
will now be holding a speci`l exhibition marking its 150th | :21:06. | :21:10.
anniversary and the history of the youth movement, until December. -- a | :21:11. | :21:23.

Maybe a -- wrote shower. Sole? Questions but not | :26:34. | :26:42.
