And the Oscar worthy films coming from this quiet shed. | :00:41. | :00:51.
Welcome to BBC London News with me Riz Lateef. | :00:52. | :00:59.
A student who planted a home-made bomb on a busy tube train has been | :01:00. | :01:02.
Damon Smith - who's 20 and has Asperger's Syndrome - | :01:03. | :01:07.
was caught on CCTV leaving a bag filled with ball bearings | :01:08. | :01:09.
The judge said although we have not been motivated by terrorism and the | :01:10. | :01:23.
seriousness of what he did could not be overstated. His mother insists he | :01:24. | :01:28.
is a vulnerable young man. Damon Smith studied at London | :01:29. | :01:36.
Metropolitan University. Last October he let his accommodation and | :01:37. | :01:41.
waited for the Jubilee line. This CCTV shows him checking the rucksack | :01:42. | :01:46.
which had a bomb inside made from ball bearings and an alarm clock. | :01:47. | :01:50.
The meter gets off at London Bridge leaving the bag behind. This device | :01:51. | :01:54.
is time to go off in a few minutes later but it did not. The gene | :01:55. | :01:58.
carried on to north Greenwich but the alarm was raised and the area | :01:59. | :02:03.
evacuated. Counter-terrorism police said his bomb was a viable device | :02:04. | :02:11.
that it failed to detonate. Damon Smith had previously posted images | :02:12. | :02:15.
of himself with various weapons on social media. He learned how to make | :02:16. | :02:19.
a bomb from an extremist Islamist website. They also suffered from | :02:20. | :02:25.
Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. This is what he told the | :02:26. | :02:31.
police after his arrest. I realise it was going to Stratford. I thought | :02:32. | :02:37.
it would be a good time to read my bag for a prank. Following a trial | :02:38. | :02:45.
Damon Smith was found guilty of having an explosive substance with | :02:46. | :02:49.
intent. He was sentenced to 15 months -- 15 years in prison today. | :02:50. | :03:00.
The judge said he did not believe the defendant was motivated by | :03:01. | :03:04.
Terrorism Act that said he had to treat him as a dangerous offender at | :03:05. | :03:08.
the seriousness of what he did cannot be overstated. The judge also | :03:09. | :03:13.
spoke of this year that we all live and add to the recent terrorist | :03:14. | :03:16.
attack in Manchester. At his family home in Devon his mother told the | :03:17. | :03:23.
BBC she believes Asperger's syndrome influenced his actions. I said can | :03:24. | :03:28.
you be more convenient because of Asperger's? He has never been in | :03:29. | :03:33.
trouble with the police before. -- be more lenient. He is a vulnerable | :03:34. | :03:37.
little boy. He needs help, not prison. Damon Smith will serve his | :03:38. | :03:42.
sentence at a youth offenders institution. | :03:43. | :03:49.
Turning to the election - and education has become a key | :03:50. | :03:52.
So much so, parents and teachers are protesting across London this | :03:53. | :03:55.
All the main political parties are promising more | :03:56. | :03:59.
A series of eye-catching policies have also been announced to try | :04:00. | :04:02.
and improve the life-chances of the most disadvantaged pupils. | :04:03. | :04:04.
Our Education Reporter Marc Ashdown has been looking at what | :04:05. | :04:07.
Good morning, it's Monday September the 1st 2021. | :04:08. | :04:13.
For the first time ever an equal number of pupils from | :04:14. | :04:18.
disadvantaged backgrounds are starting at University at the same | :04:19. | :04:20.
Now that is an education policy maker's dream. | :04:21. | :04:28.
But back to today's reality and for too many pupils | :04:29. | :04:31.
the idea of studying in | :04:32. | :04:33.
a place like this, Oxford, is just that, a far-away distant dream. | :04:34. | :04:39.
How can the next Government change things? | :04:40. | :04:42.
Pupils from their areas of London that have historically never | :04:43. | :04:55.
I was one of the first people in my school | :04:56. | :04:59.
to ever even get through to the interview and then get the offer. | :05:00. | :05:02.
Me being here symbolises rising up from | :05:03. | :05:03.
I was one of two people who have for the first time been admitted | :05:04. | :05:12.
When the e-mail came through it was more of a whole | :05:13. | :05:16.
What opened their eyes to the possibilities? | :05:17. | :05:20.
I was very much an average student, underachieving. | :05:21. | :05:24.
Manifestos are full of big education policies. | :05:25. | :05:29.
The Conservatives believe Grammar schools will help boost social | :05:30. | :05:31.
They will also scrap universal free school meals but | :05:32. | :05:35.
Labour wants to keep free school meals and | :05:36. | :05:39.
The Lib Dems would also keep free meals and | :05:40. | :05:45.
I wouldn't have necessarily gone to a grammar school. | :05:46. | :05:50.
And if the talent at my school had been sucked up by a | :05:51. | :05:53.
grammar school I don't know whether I would | :05:54. | :05:55.
have had people that I would | :05:56. | :05:57.
You get the criticism that grammar schools are meant | :05:58. | :06:00.
for working-class kids to get better opportunities, better resources. | :06:01. | :06:03.
Now that goes to people that can afford | :06:04. | :06:05.
so much tuition from the ages of five and six. | :06:06. | :06:15.
I think if they overhaul that testing system. | :06:16. | :06:17.
I think tuition fees are problematic. | :06:18. | :06:19.
You're just saddling young people with more and | :06:20. | :06:21.
So I think that even if the tuition fee | :06:22. | :06:25.
system is not revised the | :06:26. | :06:27.
maintenance grant and loan system has to be because it's a massive | :06:28. | :06:30.
These three are working hard towards their degrees. | :06:31. | :06:33.
After the election the hard work to inspire more pupils begins. | :06:34. | :06:38.
So, Marc, clearly lots of issues around education - | :06:39. | :06:40.
and parents today making their feelings clear on funding? | :06:41. | :06:45.
Yes. Selection will be a big debate over the next five or so years but | :06:46. | :06:52.
no funding is the big issue. Schools especially in London a they are | :06:53. | :06:56.
being squeezed, expected to pay for more with budgets frozen. Already we | :06:57. | :07:00.
are seeing parent power evident over the past few weeks, protests and | :07:01. | :07:04.
this spine in East London have been springing up. Public meetings also. | :07:05. | :07:08.
They are well organised and well attended by parents and teachers and | :07:09. | :07:12.
they are all saying similar things. The cats have already affected our | :07:13. | :07:17.
school. The resources, teachers are already finding it difficult. The | :07:18. | :07:23.
less funding that we have, it stops the children from being able to | :07:24. | :07:27.
achieve what they need to. Our primary School is not getting | :07:28. | :07:32.
funded. A lot of my secondary school is even worse? I have also been | :07:33. | :07:35.
talking to headteachers at their annual conference in a few weeks | :07:36. | :07:40.
ago. They are also worried about funding, in particular the new fair | :07:41. | :07:44.
funding formula that ideally would benefit schools in the countryside | :07:45. | :07:49.
at the expense of those in the cities. And recruitment, everybody | :07:50. | :07:52.
says you need to chain and keep the best teachers. An absolute priority | :07:53. | :07:59.
for any priority -- for any Government is to sort out retention | :08:00. | :08:03.
and recruitment crisis and invest in teachers. Professional development | :08:04. | :08:13.
so that they are. It always seems to come down to | :08:14. | :08:18.
money. It does. In their manifestos the Conservatives are pledging an | :08:19. | :08:22.
extra ?4 billion over the next Parliament for schools. Reader and | :08:23. | :08:24.
the Lib Dems say that there's nothing like enough when you bring | :08:25. | :08:29.
inflation into effect so they say six billion and 7 billion | :08:30. | :08:32.
respectively. Big sums and big issues. Parents and teachers, | :08:33. | :08:36.
already mobilised to make sure schools don't miss out. | :08:37. | :08:41.
Thank you. That was our education reporter. | :08:42. | :08:43.
A High Court judge has ruled that Heathrow cannot charge Crossrail | :08:44. | :08:46.
for using its track to travel to the airport. | :08:47. | :08:48.
Heathrow spent ?1 billion building the five-mile line. | :08:49. | :08:53.
Today they said they're disappointed with the result | :08:54. | :08:55.
Police are asking Londoners to remain alert and report anything | :08:56. | :09:01.
suspicious as extra armed officers continue to patrol | :09:02. | :09:02.
It comes after the terror threat level was raised to critical - | :09:03. | :09:11.
Our reporter Frankie McCamley is at Westminster. | :09:12. | :09:18.
How different will things feel this weekend? With thousands of people | :09:19. | :09:26.
heading to the city for key attractions. Especially the bank | :09:27. | :09:30.
holiday with this lovely sunny weather including right here in | :09:31. | :09:34.
Westminster. And some of the biggest sporting events taking place this | :09:35. | :09:39.
year. Security will remain tight. We will see Esther police officers on | :09:40. | :09:43.
the streets, extra and police officers on the streets, -- we will | :09:44. | :09:49.
see extra police officers. The terror threat level was raised, a | :09:50. | :09:57.
lot of old buildings were close to the public. As of tomorrow some of | :09:58. | :10:02.
the House of parliament to us will resume. The terror threat level does | :10:03. | :10:07.
remain critical which means an attack is imminent. I have been | :10:08. | :10:11.
speaking to one Metropolitan Police officer who has been telling me what | :10:12. | :10:12.
that means to the public. At the events that are taking place | :10:13. | :10:15.
at the weekend I think people should be prepared to see increased | :10:16. | :10:19.
searching of bags, more security. Arrive early and in plenty of time, | :10:20. | :10:22.
perhaps not as late as you would do Policing perspective, | :10:23. | :10:26.
you are going to see Not at events but transport hubs | :10:27. | :10:28.
and around the crowded and iconic places we have got | :10:29. | :10:34.

the capital this weekend. That strong message was reiterated | :10:48. | :11:02.
by the Home Secretary Amber Raju is urging people to get out and join | :11:03. | :11:05.

It's Friday evening, you're watching BBC London News. | :11:50. | :11:51.
We meet the 63-year-old Oscar-winning animator who works out | :11:52. | :11:54.
There are claims that more than one in four people | :11:55. | :12:12.
who have a disfigurement to their face or body have suffered | :12:13. | :12:15.
The charity Changing Faces says there's been a rise in cases | :12:16. | :12:18.
Jim Wheble has been talking to one woman about her experience. | :12:19. | :12:24.
Because I had a rare genetic condition, there are times | :12:25. | :12:28.
where I would be walking down the street like this, | :12:29. | :12:31.
But for Victoria, unfortunately, all too often it does not end there, | :12:32. | :12:42.
I think I'm lucky living in Central London. | :12:43. | :12:53.
Living in such an amazing city it means that on the whole people value | :12:54. | :12:57.
and celebrate diversity and difference but then | :12:58. | :13:03.
will be really nasty to me and shout abuse at me in the street. | :13:04. | :13:11.
I have had men in cars who shout abuse at me through car windows. | :13:12. | :13:14.
I have walked past people outside of pubs where they have gone "that | :13:15. | :13:17.
Even in the last few days you have had abuse online? | :13:18. | :13:21.
This image here with a character of a moon for a face | :13:22. | :13:32.
and a long pointed chin, as you can see... | :13:33. | :13:35.
Unpleasant words not repeatable on television. | :13:36. | :13:41.
For the report, the charity, Changing Faces spoke to 800 people | :13:42. | :13:44.
What strikes you is the intensity of the prejudice that people face. | :13:45. | :13:51.
Nearly 80% said they had experienced harassment from a | :13:52. | :13:54.
Nearly half said they'd been bullied at school. | :13:55. | :13:59.
Virtually all said they'd been abused on | :14:00. | :14:01.
Many of our clients and users they find social media a | :14:02. | :14:09.
But social media is also very unregulated. | :14:10. | :14:15.
When complaints are made by individuals | :14:16. | :14:17.
In a report we found that the complaints that have been | :14:18. | :14:24.
I have the right to have a family life and have friends and go | :14:25. | :14:40.
a right to do all of that free from abuse. | :14:41. | :14:45.
So I made a conscious decision that that is what I was going to do, | :14:46. | :14:50.
to live my life and be happy and ignore and rise above the abuse. | :14:51. | :15:00.
It's the oldest football competition in the world - | :15:01. | :15:03.
and tomorrow's FA Cup final at Wembley is an all-London affair. | :15:04. | :15:08.
The last time that happened was 15 years ago - | :15:09. | :15:10.
and it was the same two teams Chelsea versus Arsenal. | :15:11. | :15:13.
It should be. Their 136 FA Cup final and only the sixth of London final, | :15:14. | :15:32.
it does not come around that often. This one will be played out in a | :15:33. | :15:39.
slightly strange atmosphere stalls -- strange atmosphere. There will | :15:40. | :15:43.
not be a victory parade through the streets of London. Despite that | :15:44. | :15:50.
these two teams, as they are both at their best, should put on quite a | :15:51. | :15:54.
display. Let us remind ourselves of that last meeting in 2002. A lot has | :15:55. | :15:57.
changed since then. The last time these teams | :15:58. | :16:03.
met in the cup final Arsene Wenger ended this season | :16:04. | :16:09.
as a double winner a second time. 15 years on, tomorrow it's Chelsea | :16:10. | :16:13.
going for the second Abramovich era, which would make it | :16:14. | :16:16.
quite some first season for manager For 90 minutes, 120 minutes, | :16:17. | :16:20.
maybe penalties, we have to forget for this moment | :16:21. | :16:23.
that we won the league. And to be concentrated | :16:24. | :16:26.
on this target. Don't forget it's | :16:27. | :16:29.
a fantastic target. For all the success | :16:30. | :16:33.
they've witnessed in the recent past many Chelsea fans agree | :16:34. | :16:35.
Conte has delivered something By far it's the most technical team | :16:36. | :16:37.
that we've seen with the likes of Pedro, Hazard, | :16:38. | :16:45.
Willian in the middle. Prior teams were a bit | :16:46. | :16:47.
more brute force. For Arsenal cup success | :16:48. | :16:51.
would provide a sliver of consolation having missed | :16:52. | :16:58.
out on Champions League It has not been a great season | :16:59. | :17:00.
for us so we have the opportunity to make that a bit | :17:01. | :17:06.
better at the weekend. With fans split on whether | :17:07. | :17:10.
Arsene Wenger should stay or go it's been a season | :17:11. | :17:12.
of protest and unrest at the We've had some wonderful years | :17:13. | :17:16.
under Arsene Wenger. We do need to address | :17:17. | :17:19.
the issues that we are There is infighting as I've never | :17:20. | :17:26.
ever seen before and it will not be happening | :17:27. | :17:36.
at football club. Fewer people expect Arsenal to lift | :17:37. | :17:41.
the trophy this year. Arsene Wenger's first season ended | :17:42. | :17:53.
in a double, Antonio Conte hopes to emulate that. Pat Nevin, do you | :17:54. | :17:59.
expect your former club Chelsea to win? They will be favourites. They | :18:00. | :18:03.
have been in fantastic form most of the season. Ever since the last | :18:04. | :18:09.
Arsenal game away from home. They play their best they have got | :18:10. | :18:13.
everything in their favour. Arsenal are missing some of the main | :18:14. | :18:19.
players. All the indicators are going in one direction. Most of | :18:20. | :18:24.
them, but not all of them. But Arsenal have been in good form the | :18:25. | :18:28.
last four or five games, they are on a good run, ever since they went to | :18:29. | :18:32.
the city for the formation. It has worked a treat. But he has to change | :18:33. | :18:41.
the personnel quite a bit. Arsenal have been unlucky that they did not | :18:42. | :18:44.
get to the top four this season. When you mention that top four, how | :18:45. | :18:49.
much of a factor will that have on Arsene Wenger's decision? Will this | :18:50. | :18:54.
be his last game? I have a suspicion they will stay. All that mood music | :18:55. | :18:58.
I hear coming from everywhere, the media, slightly inside the club, he | :18:59. | :19:03.
wants to stay. If he wants to stay he will stay. It would make an | :19:04. | :19:07.
easier for him if he could get silverware at the end of the DNC is | :19:08. | :19:11.
an FA Cup winner this season. But there is pressure on him, no doubt. | :19:12. | :19:15.
The pressure is big. If he does not win this game you are looking at | :19:16. | :19:19.
next season, talking about the quality of the clubs he is going to | :19:20. | :19:22.
be up against, he is good to be under massive pressure, but forget | :19:23. | :19:28.
about that, sunshine, Wembley, FA Cup final, that is the only thing on | :19:29. | :19:34.
his mind. Thank you. How about this for an illustration of how football | :19:35. | :19:36.
and When Chelsea won the cup | :19:37. | :19:36.
for the first time in 1970 many fans Now only one of them remains - | :19:37. | :19:44.
Sarah Harris has been to meet her. A stone's throw from Stamford Bridge | :19:45. | :19:57.
on the eve of tomorrow's FA Cup final. This was the scene Street 47 | :19:58. | :20:02.
years ago when Chelsea were about to take on Leeds United to lift the | :20:03. | :20:07.
trophy. Painted each one blue and white, the entire length of the | :20:08. | :20:12.
street. Surely is the only resident still living on the road and | :20:13. | :20:16.
remembers the atmosphere as if it was yesterday. The entire street was | :20:17. | :20:20.
excited. There were loads of children their back then. They were | :20:21. | :20:28.
all dressed in blue and white. And that man's came out the night | :20:29. | :20:32.
before, painted all these kerbstones blue and white rate their way down | :20:33. | :20:38.
the street. Then people open their windows, put the bunting treats | :20:39. | :20:41.
across so the entire street had flags and bunting. | :20:42. | :20:49.
