The Mayor accuses the government

pollution calling it a scandal. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:20
We have been told overnight London
cannot bid for that. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
We'll explain why and hear
what the government has to say. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
Also tonight... | 0:00:25 | 0:00:30
It is such a senseless, senseless
things to do. That he is not here | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
with us. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34

A very good evening
to you and welcome to the programme. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
He's accused the Government
of abandoning Londoners | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
affected by air pollution. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:11
The Mayor says it's a scandal
that our city won't be eligible | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
for a new multi-million
pound Clean Air Fund. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
Sadiq Khan was giving evidence
to a joint inquiry at the Commons | 0:01:16 | 0:01:22
into improving air quality.
to a joint inquiry at the Commons | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
The government said London already
receives a settlement from them | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
to improve air quality
and reduce harmful emissions. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
Louisa Preston reports. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
A message from primary school
children about the poor quality of | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
the air they breathe in the capital.
These young people from Chestnuts | 0:01:32 | 0:01:37
primary School in Haringey were
petitioning Downing Street because | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
they go to school where pollution
levels break the law. It is bad for | 0:01:40 | 0:01:47
the children because our playground
is next to a busy road. That is | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
really not good for our health. Ever
pollution is causing a lot of deaths | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
and diseases. Maybe if it cannot be
stopped it should be reduced | 0:01:56 | 0:02:02
somehow. Diesel vehicles are the
biggest cause of the problem in | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
London and in the budget the
Chancellor increased tax on diesel | 0:02:05 | 0:02:10
cars and announced £220 million for
a Clean Air Fund but the capital | 0:02:10 | 0:02:16
will not get any of it, something
the mayor says is a scandal. The | 0:02:16 | 0:02:21
government is saying there is £220
million. We cannot receive any of | 0:02:21 | 0:02:29
that. It is not sustainable to
expect a London mayor to do this | 0:02:29 | 0:02:35
investment to help local authorities
without help from central | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
government. It is not just the
mayors saying the government is not | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
going far enough. We want bigger
taxation that could have led to a | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
bigger fund to help people get out
of their diesel car and switch to | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
alternative forms of transport.
Clean air is a complex problem with | 0:02:49 | 0:02:54
pollution coming from construction
vehicles, boilers, farming, wood | 0:02:54 | 0:02:59
fires and even car tyres as they
wear down. The government insists it | 0:02:59 | 0:03:08
is cleaning up the air as fast as it
can but with children starting to | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
make a stand and every person in the
capital breathing in air that | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
exceeds global guidelines it is an
issue not likely to go away. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
Louisa, the Mayor not
holding back over this? | 0:03:16 | 0:03:21
He is not. He is not happy. He made
that clear on Twitter. He said it is | 0:03:21 | 0:03:28
a scandal the city will not be
eligible for the government clean | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
air fund. He added... We heard
yesterday the Chancellor is | 0:03:31 | 0:03:39
increasing taxes on diesel cars to
create this 220 million Clean Air | 0:03:39 | 0:03:46
Fund. Local councils will be able to
apply for money but London will not | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
because of its devolved powers. We
know Sadiq Khan has put air | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
pollution as a top priority and
introduce the T charge last month | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
and we know the ultra emission zone
will be put in place next year. The | 0:03:59 | 0:04:05
oldest and most polluting vehicles
with the T charge pay extra to come | 0:04:05 | 0:04:10
into London and with the low
emission zone the older cars will | 0:04:10 | 0:04:14
have an additional charge put on
them. What is the government saying? | 0:04:14 | 0:04:19
We have had a statement from the
Department night saying the Mayor of | 0:04:19 | 0:04:24
London has received a comprehensive
funding settlement from the | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
government worth more than 5 billion
. Next year, the government will | 0:04:27 | 0:04:43
publish a clean air strategy to set
out new areas of tackling air | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
pollution. The mayor feels annoyed
he cannot get his hands on any of | 0:04:47 | 0:04:52
this money announced yesterday
because of the problems we have in | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
London, and he believes the
government should do more to help | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
people that suffer with high air
pollution in the capital. Thank you. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:07
A senseless attack that has
left a family broken - | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
the words of the mother
of builder Danny Pearce, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
who was stabbed to death
in Greenwich while being robbed | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
of his Rolex watch. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:15
Four months on, the Met
is renewing its appeal | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
for information about his killers
with a £10,000 reward | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
for information that leads
to a secure conviction. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
Helen Mulroy reports. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
Enjoying a night out with friends. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
This was Danny Pearce in Greenwich
on the 14th of July this year. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
Just hours after this video
was taken, Danny was dead - | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
stabbed as he made his way home,
all for his Rolex watch. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:44
He was my baby. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
All our lives have changed. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
All of them. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
How you see me I have changed into
two people. I am one person at work | 0:05:53 | 0:05:58
because I cannot be like this at
work. When I come home... This is | 0:05:58 | 0:06:06
how I am. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
Two men have been arrested but no
charges have been laid. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
Now the Metropolitan Police
are renewing their appeal | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
for information. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:14
Newly released CCTV shows
Danny making his way | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
down King William Walk
with friends just after midnight. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:22
This was the moment he was singled
out by his killers on their moped. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
They make a U-turn to return
and launch their attack. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
One produces a hunting knife
and the other a gun. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
They make a demand
for Danny's watch. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:36
A struggle ensues and ultimately
Danny ends up here, unfortunately | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
fatally stabbed, and here
on these very steps sadly | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
Danny lost his life. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
The group had been shot at,
and Danny repeatedly stabbed. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:49
It's most likely the longest, most
sustained stabbing I have ever come | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
across in my 26 years of service. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:56
Danny's family hope that
in revealing more details | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
about the violent and
sustained attack that | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
killed their son and brother, | 0:07:00 | 0:07:05
in here, what is a popular London
nightspot, it may jog the memory | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
of anybody who knows
anything further about | 0:07:09 | 0:07:10
the identity of his killers. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
I just can't get it out of my head. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
Such a senseless, senseless thing | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
to do and he's not here with us. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
He's just not here. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:28
Crimestoppers is offering a £10,000
reward for any information that | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
will secure a conviction. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:37
And the number to call
Crimestoppers is 0800 555 111. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
That number again, 0800 555 111. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:47
You're watching BBC London News,
coming up later in the programme... | 0:07:47 | 0:07:51
As the trial date is set next
month for the Hampstead | 0:07:51 | 0:07:54
mother jailed in Iran,
we speak to her husband | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
about how they are coping. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:05
Christmas shoppers are being urged
not to rush into buying gifts | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
from unknown sellers. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
New figures show that
in 2015 victims lost nearly | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
£10 million to fraudsters. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
In 2016 that figure
rose to 16 million. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
City of London Police have launched
a campaign warning buyers | 0:08:19 | 0:08:21
that they could be playing
into the hands of scammers | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
in their attempts to snap
up seasonal bargains. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
Helen Drew is on a busy
Oxford Street and can tell us more. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:36
You may be watching this thinking I
cannot think about Christmas | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
shopping until December but a lot of
people right now are well under way | 0:08:39 | 0:08:44
with their heirs and tomorrow will
be busier. It is Black Friday and | 0:08:44 | 0:08:50
shortly after cyber Monday, the
busiest day for online shopping. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:55
Police today warned of the dangers
that can come with it. 32 days until | 0:08:55 | 0:09:00
Christmas. Some people are ramping
up present buying. The Action Fraud | 0:09:00 | 0:09:06
team is warning of online shopping
dangers. They say the most likely | 0:09:06 | 0:09:11
thing people tried to buy from
fraudsters are mobile phones | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
followed by clothing and accessories
and then footwear. Specific items | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
victims report are Kanye West's
trainers. Fitness watches and this | 0:09:19 | 0:09:29
make up. If I go on the official
website I can buy this popular | 0:09:29 | 0:09:36
lipstick it for $29 plus shipping
from America but online by searching | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
can find the same thing for £1.99.
They say if something looks too good | 0:09:40 | 0:09:48
to be true, it probably is. Those
items often turn out to be fake or | 0:09:48 | 0:09:53
never turn up. It is also stealing
credit card details. This afternoon | 0:09:53 | 0:09:58
it did not take long to find victims
of fraud. Somebody had put something | 0:09:58 | 0:10:05
on my card and I checked the bank
statement and it was seven or eight | 0:10:05 | 0:10:12
flights, over £2000. Frightening. I
do not do much online shopping | 0:10:12 | 0:10:17
possibly because I am nervous of
that very thing happening. The only | 0:10:17 | 0:10:22
online fraud I have had is buying
concert tickets that was enough. I | 0:10:22 | 0:10:28
am reasonably cautious, probably not
enough. Probably passwords need to | 0:10:28 | 0:10:32
be about. The 14 say it is crucial
to think twice. I did think there | 0:10:32 | 0:10:38
was something wrong but I clicked
anyway. If you take time, time to | 0:10:38 | 0:10:44
think, count to five. It will
probably save you money. The 14's | 0:10:44 | 0:10:50
campaign is urging people to do
that. Slow down and think before | 0:10:50 | 0:10:56
clicking the buy now button. You
heard the advice of the report about | 0:10:56 | 0:11:02
having to avoid online shopping
fraud. The City of London Police | 0:11:02 | 0:11:07
issue other advice which includes
using PayPal online because that | 0:11:07 | 0:11:12
offers buyers a certain amount of
protection and making sure you have | 0:11:12 | 0:11:16
antivirus software on your devices
and you update it regularly. Another | 0:11:16 | 0:11:21
piece of advice, ensuring you use
strong passwords, and it does not | 0:11:21 | 0:11:26
mean the same password for
everything. When I interviewed the | 0:11:26 | 0:11:31
detective inspector, he told me the
most popular pass word still is the | 0:11:31 | 0:11:36
word pass word. If it is a website
where you need numbers it is | 0:11:36 | 0:11:44
password 1234. If you think that
sounds familiar you might want to | 0:11:44 | 0:11:49
think about changing that. Last year
there were £60 million of Christmas | 0:11:49 | 0:11:55
shopping fraud and before that 10
million so it is increasing and | 0:11:55 | 0:11:59
police said they expect this year it
will be more than ever. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:04

His mother has told BBC
London her son was the victim | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
of mistaken identity
and excessive force. | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
The police watchdog
is investigating. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:50
It's now been 600 days
since a London mother | 0:12:50 | 0:12:52
was first imprisoned in Iran. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
That's according to the campaign
to free Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
She's being held in Tehran
accused of spying - | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
charges she denies. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
The time she's served means
she becomes eligible for early | 0:13:03 | 0:13:05
release from her first
sentence of five years, | 0:13:05 | 0:13:10
but is still facing further charges
for which a trial date is believed | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
to have been set for next month. | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
Nazanin's husband Richard
is here with me. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:20
Thank you for coming in. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:21
Does it feel like there is a light
at the end of tunnel | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
in terms of Nazanin eligible
for early release? | 0:13:24 | 0:13:29
Certainly now we have got to a
point, 600 days is a long time but | 0:13:29 | 0:13:34
now we have an application in hoping
she will be granted it and we have a | 0:13:34 | 0:13:39
march on Saturday where we will take
a letter to the supreme leader's | 0:13:39 | 0:13:44
office in London to ask if he will
consider her case. There are | 0:13:44 | 0:13:48
certainly things we can hope for.
How is Nazanin coping? You mentioned | 0:13:48 | 0:13:54
she found lumps in her breast. That
is right, ten days ago she was taken | 0:13:54 | 0:13:59
to the doctor with lumps in her
breast and the worry was breast | 0:13:59 | 0:14:07
cancer because she has it in the
family. She was taken back last | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
Saturday and responded to medication
so it looks like they are not | 0:14:10 | 0:14:12
cancerous, which was a relief. In
terms of her mental health, it is a | 0:14:12 | 0:14:19
long time to be in solitary
confinement and imprisoned. In the | 0:14:19 | 0:14:25
past month there has been the
turmoil of things in the media here. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:29
She is pretty fragile. How are you
coping? It has been a long process | 0:14:29 | 0:14:34
and the past couple of weeks, people
will have seen me on television all | 0:14:34 | 0:14:39
over the place. I am glad she's
getting the attention, that is what | 0:14:39 | 0:14:44
keeps me going. You mentioned the
past few weeks have been busy and | 0:14:44 | 0:14:48
you have been on media, because of
comments by the Foreign Secretary. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:54
You met Boris Johnson last week. Are
you feeling any more confident you | 0:14:54 | 0:14:58
will get to go to Iran because that
is what you wanted? I met the | 0:14:58 | 0:15:03
Foreign Secretary and asked him that
I would like to come with him when | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
he goes to Tehran and he said he was
keen and he had to consult with his | 0:15:06 | 0:15:12
staff and the Iranian authorities.
He sent me a text message this | 0:15:12 | 0:15:16
morning saying his thoughts were
with us. I followed up with the new | 0:15:16 | 0:15:21
trial date for 10th of December to
ask if he could get there in time | 0:15:21 | 0:15:26
for that. I will put in a new
request to the Iranian embassy to | 0:15:26 | 0:15:30
ask if I can be there to witness the
trial. When you met, did you talk | 0:15:30 | 0:15:35
about the fact the comments he made
in the Foreign Affairs Committee | 0:15:35 | 0:15:40
saying Nazanin was training
journalists and the effect it may | 0:15:40 | 0:15:45
have had? The statement said the
Iranian Foreign Minister assured the | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
Foreign Secretary his remarks have
no bearing on Nazanin Zaghari- | 0:15:49 | 0:15:53
Ratcliffe -'s case and he is
committed to working with the UK. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:57
The Foreign Secretary stressed there
are worries about the new case and | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
we talked about the details of it
and what was likely next and about | 0:16:01 | 0:16:07
health and about the visit. The key
focus was on when is he going green | 0:16:07 | 0:16:15
can I go with him. Do you think the
government is doing enough to get | 0:16:15 | 0:16:19
Nazanin home in time for Christmas?
I hope they are doing all they can. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:23
One thing we are pushing for is to
have a meeting to discuss the idea | 0:16:23 | 0:16:29
of diplomatic protection, where she
is protected more seriously than | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
already, so there are things to push
behind closed doors and as soon as | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
the visit is arranged, the better.
Please keep us posted and we wish | 0:16:37 | 0:16:41
you the best. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
More than 80 firefighters
were called to a fire | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
at an industrial estate in north
London this morning. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:47
It started just after nine
o'clock and destroyed | 0:16:47 | 0:16:49
part of football-club
Tottenham Hotspurs' | 0:16:49 | 0:16:50
merchandise warehouse. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:51
The cause of the fire
is unknown and there are no | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
reported casualties. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
The introduction of new Thameslink
rail services to ease north to south | 0:16:58 | 0:17:01
travel through central London has
been delayed by up to a year. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
The new timetable of 24 trains
an hour at peak times on the Bedford | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
to Brighton line was meant to be
in place by December 2018 | 0:17:07 | 0:17:10
but it has been put back. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:11
The National Audit Office said
adequate arrangements hadn't yet | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
been made to manage the launch. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:20
Still to come this
Thursday evening... | 0:17:20 | 0:17:27
Chips can prevent global warming so
that has got to be a good thing. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:31
We'll tell you why it may not be
as far fetched as it sounds. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:35
And... | 0:17:35 | 0:17:41
# Please release me, can't you see
#. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:46 | |
Engelbert Humperdinck talks
candidly about how his music | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
is helping his wife
who has Alzheimers. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
Next, a story which
has divided opinion. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
A family in Hertfordshire has
defended keeping a fox as a pet. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:58
They adopted the animal
after it was handed into a vet | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
when it was just a few days old. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
They've been hand-rearing
it for seven months. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
As Sonja Jessup reports. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:10
No, it is not a scene from last
year's John Lewis Christmas advert. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:20
Jasper the fox is a family pet. He
has lived with Natalie and her | 0:18:20 | 0:18:25
children since he was two days old.
She took a call from a vet who said | 0:18:25 | 0:18:31
he'd been abandoned and would need
hand rearing. At first it was | 0:18:31 | 0:18:37
through the night every couple of
hours I would have to get up and | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
feed him. The family already had
three dogs, a cat and a horse. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
Natalie said the fox fits in well
but she treats him differently to | 0:18:43 | 0:18:49
her other pets. You can only
domesticate them to a certain level | 0:18:49 | 0:18:53
so it is respecting his natural
behaviours and learning what his | 0:18:53 | 0:18:57
noises mean and learning when you
have to be careful. His warning | 0:18:57 | 0:19:02
signals, stuff like that. In fact
after a few months, Jasper proved | 0:19:02 | 0:19:07
too much of a handful inside the
house so he now has his own | 0:19:07 | 0:19:11
enclosure in the garage. An animal
charity says foxes belong in the | 0:19:11 | 0:19:15
wild, but Natalie says she is
worried he wouldn't survive. He's | 0:19:15 | 0:19:24
not in a cage, his only there in
night-time and for his safety so | 0:19:24 | 0:19:28
it's not like I'm keeping him
captive in a cage. He has a sense of | 0:19:28 | 0:19:32
freedom and we do go on walks so
people are always going to judge | 0:19:32 | 0:19:37
whatever we do. She's hoping Jasper
decides to settle here and make | 0:19:37 | 0:19:43
himself at home. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:45
Turning now to a bold claim -
could chips and fried food really | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
help save the planet? | 0:19:48 | 0:19:49
It may not be as far
fetched as it sounds. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
Scientists at Reading University
have found cooking in fat | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
might just be help. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:55
As Asad Ahmad explains. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:59
We don't really need an excuse
to eat more fish and chips. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:02
But it is always good
to have one and you | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
won't find a better
excuse than this. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
Chips can prevent global warming,
so that has got to be a | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
good thing. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:12
OK, maybe he is exaggerating
slightly, but the | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
principle of what the chip man
is saying could be true. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
How? | 0:20:17 | 0:20:18 | |
Scientists at the University
of Reading were studying the climate | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
when they started to look at the
impact of cooking fats in the air | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
and this is the science bit. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:29
These molecules that
are emitted in large | 0:20:29 | 0:20:31
quantities in urban areas, they make
it easier for clouds to form. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:36
Clouds have a massive
impact on climate | 0:20:36 | 0:20:37
change because clouds generally
are believed to cool. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
If you had more clouds,
it could potentially lead to | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
increased cooling. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:49
So a lower temperature. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:50
OK, just to break that scientific
explanation down further, | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
what the doctor is
effectively saying is this. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
When you deep fat fry,
tiny molecules of fat go up | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
in the atmosphere. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:00
As they rise, they stay
there for some time and | 0:21:00 | 0:21:07
while there, they thicken cloud and
that has the effect of keeping more | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
of the sun rays away
from us and therefore | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
cooling the temperature,
helping global cooling. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:19
And nobody is happier than those in
the local chip shop. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
But they say they have been
doing their bit for some time. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
We recycle oil. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:34
The crispy bits, the batter,
we get, we recycle | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
them into oil to be
used again, so none | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
of it is going to waste
and we | 0:21:39 | 0:21:41 | |
made a conscious effort to cut
down on plastic items. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:44
We have changed a lot
of our things to cardboard. | 0:21:44 | 0:21:46
So we have always
been quite conscious | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
about the effect on the environment. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:49
So chip shops could argue they now
have a new eco-status, doing their | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
bit for the planet, trying to stop
icecaps from melting. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
But even the scientists
at Reading University are | 0:21:55 | 0:21:57
the first to say a lot more
research needs to be done. | 0:21:57 | 0:21:59
Now to the man who has sold 150
million records across the world. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:04
He's Arnold Dorsey to his
friends and family, | 0:22:04 | 0:22:05
but to us he's Engelbert
Humperdinck. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
At the age of 81, he's still touring
and has a new album. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
Wendy Hurrell has been talking
to him about his how his music | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
is helping his wife,
who has Alzheimers. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:18
# Please release me...#. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:28
The song that kept the Beatles off
the top spot in 1967 and launched | 0:22:28 | 0:22:32
a half-century career. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
I'm so thrilled that one song has
given me that passport to the world. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
Now Engelbert Humperdinck has
produced a new album of covers. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:49
One by Bruno Mars. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:54
This is the first time they met. I
told him he would become a big star | 0:22:54 | 0:23:00
and he became a megastar. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:02
The album is dedicated
to his wife of 53 years. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:04
Patricia was diagnosed
with Alzheimer's a decade ago. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:06
Just Like The First Time
was written especially for her. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:15
The duet I'm Glad I Danced With You,
a lot of the songs depict exactly | 0:23:15 | 0:23:19
what a man thinks about his better
half, you know? | 0:23:19 | 0:23:25
I met her in a dance hall
when she was 17 years old, | 0:23:25 | 0:23:28
and we have been dancing
together ever since. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:31
# I'm glad I danced with you #. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:39
She listens to the album every day! | 0:23:39 | 0:23:41
Does she? | 0:23:41 | 0:23:44
Yes, she listens to it every
morning and there's a smile | 0:23:44 | 0:23:46
on her face when she hears it. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
She's not totally compos mentis
but she's beginning to understand | 0:23:48 | 0:23:53
more now and I think musically
it is great therapy for her | 0:23:53 | 0:23:58
because it brings back the past. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:02
And it's wonderful,
and she's learning to talk | 0:24:02 | 0:24:04
a bit more now again. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
It's just wonderful, wonderful. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
The progress, it's not supposed
to happen but it's happening | 0:24:10 | 0:24:12
and I think it's a miracle. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:16
Time to get a check on the weather
with weather with Darren Bett. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
The sunshine made us smile today but
temperatures are taking a downward | 0:24:28 | 0:24:31
trend over the next few days. 15
degrees was our top temperature | 0:24:31 | 0:24:37
today, and tomorrow the temperatures
will be lower so it is turning | 0:24:37 | 0:24:41
colder. But the winds will be
lighter as well, probably getting | 0:24:41 | 0:24:44
off to quite a cloudy start because
there is some rain on the way | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
overnight to head our way as well.
Today we have been sort of in | 0:24:48 | 0:24:53
between rain. We had the early
bursts of rain, gusty winds clearing | 0:24:53 | 0:24:57
away, then we have been waiting for
these showers to come our way but | 0:24:57 | 0:25:01
they have taken a long time. It
won't take long before we see some | 0:25:01 | 0:25:15
wetter weather moving across from
the west and heading across most of | 0:25:17 | 0:25:19
the London area and the south-east,
but tending to clear away later on | 0:25:19 | 0:25:22
in the night. It keeps temperatures
up. The following few nights will be | 0:25:22 | 0:25:24
colder than that five or 6 degrees.
We should see sky brightening, some | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
sunshine at times up for the most
part I think it will be a dry day | 0:25:27 | 0:25:30
with the risk of some showers in the
afternoon. Temperatures struggling | 0:25:30 | 0:25:33
to make double figures, eight or 9
degrees will be typical. The chilly | 0:25:33 | 0:25:39
day, but that means that where we
have the clear skies overnight | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
tomorrow night and into the start of
the weekend it will be called. We | 0:25:42 | 0:25:46
are looking at a touch of frost away
from the centre of London. Those | 0:25:46 | 0:25:51
temperatures won't be far away from
freezing. A cold start of the | 0:25:51 | 0:25:56
weekend but a bright start. The
winds will pick up on Saturday so it | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
will feel colder with the winds
strengthening. And so those | 0:26:00 | 0:26:06
temperatures again falling away, not
as warm. It will be colder, six or 7 | 0:26:06 | 0:26:11
degrees. Into cold air right the way
through the weekend. Briefly we get | 0:26:11 | 0:26:17
orange, this is milder air, not the
drink all fruit and it could be | 0:26:17 | 0:26:21
accompanied by rain. That will be on
the first half of Monday, then the | 0:26:21 | 0:26:27
cold air is set to return. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:30
Darren, thank you. Recapping
headlines before we go... | 0:26:33 | 0:26:38
