That's all from the BBC News at Six,
so it's goodbye from me, | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
and on BBC One, we now join
the BBC's news teams where you are. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:03
Tonight on BBC London News:
the BBC's news teams where you are. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
Claims that London needs 73
new schools to meet the growing | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
demand for secondary places. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
We will be about 1900
students by 2019 and by that | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
time we'll be full. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
Obviously, that means
increased numbers in our | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
sixth formers as well. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
A new report says leisure centres
and cafes should be used | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
to ease the pressure. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
Also tonight: | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
Police reveal CCTV images
in connection to a hit and run | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
in which a woman was hit
by four vehicles. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:38
It happened at this busy junction in
Tulse Hill. It's believed the | 0:00:38 | 0:00:44
29-year-old was hit by four
different vehicles and all of the | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
drivers failed to stop. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
Plus, bringing the homeless
in from the cold. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
The mayor announces
plans for new shelters | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
during freezing nights. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
And we're live at one
of the UK's biggest and most | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
prestigious horse shows. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
Good evening. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
I'm Chris Rogers. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:11
First tonight, claims that London
is set to see a bigger increase | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
in secondary school pupils
than anywhere else in the country. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:19
That's according to a new report
which says here in the capital, | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
we'll need to find places for 76,000
extra students by 2020. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:26
That would mean building
73 new schools. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
Another option suggested to meet
the growing demand for places | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
is to use leisure centres and cafes
to teach children. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:36
Here's Marc Ashdown. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:42
Just imagine schools
in leisure centres, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
disused council buildings,
high-rise blocks, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
or even off-the-peg
prefabricated classrooms... | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
Just a few of the possibilities,
as London strains under | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
a secondary population boom. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
TEACHER SPEAKING IN FRENCH. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
This report lays bare the challenge
facing every borough to provide | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
enough school places. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
And Barking and Dagenham
is at the epicentre. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
In this borough alone
in the next two years, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
they are going to have nearly 6000
more secondary aged pupils, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
that's a 40% increase. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
In effect, they'll need
six brand-new schools. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
It requires some creative thinking. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
Brussels sprouts? | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
Yes you do, why not?! | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
Here, the headteacher doesn't
always serve dinner, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
but they have had to box clever
to cope with rising pupil numbers. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:28
A lot of it is about unstructured
time, break times and lunchtimes. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:34
You know, your playground
is your playground. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
If you add another 200,
300 students onto the playground, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
you face real difficulties. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
You can't cram all your Key Stage 3
kids into a single playground. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
So we've had to look
creatively about the space. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
Scape Group analyse the Government's
data to identify where | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
school places are needed. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
They're experts in design
and recommend some radical ways | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
of putting schools at the very heart
of future community planning. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
It's really key that we don't work
in silos and that education | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
buildings can be delivered alongside
health and leisure, retail. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
At the same time, thinking about how
we can join up with the industry | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
to deliver solutions. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
Off-site technology is at its best
value for money when we buy in bulk | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
and we buy en masse,
so being able to procure things | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
together, to design buildings
together, not only benefits | 0:03:15 | 0:03:20
the master planning,
but also delivers things | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
faster and often cheaper. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
TEACHER SPEAKS IN FRENCH. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:28
That they also want the councils
and the Government speaking the same | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
language, working together. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
Too often good ideas on both sides
are lost in translation. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
We need to work with all sorts
of schools and the DfE to make sure | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
that we've got the schools
being built in the right places. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
I mean, some boroughs unfortunately
in the past have been forced to have | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
new free schools where there hasn't
been the demand, which has | 0:03:47 | 0:03:52
undermined local existing schools
and that's a very bad thing. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:57
The Department for Education says
it's created 235,000 school places | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
in London since 2011 and has
committed a further half a billion | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
pounds to help create more,
but it's a huge challenge and every | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
bit of space now counts. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
Mark Ashdown, BBC London News. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
The shortage of school places
is our top story this Friday night, | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
but there's still lots more to come
before 7, including... | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
I'm on the rooftops of London,
finding out if the solution | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
to the London housing crisis
is selling thin air. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:29
Police investigating a fatal
hit-and-run in south London have | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
released CCTV images of a lorry
and car they want to trace. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:40
A 29-year-old woman was struck
by four different vehicles | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
on a pedestrian crossing
in Tulse Hill where officers say | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
she was left to die. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
We can join our reporter
Victoria Hollins at the scene. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:58
This is the junction in Tulse Hill
where this happened on Monday | 0:05:00 | 0:05:04
morning, a very busy junction, not
just at this time but on Monday | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
morning as well, around 6:45am when
it happened. You can see the flowers | 0:05:08 | 0:05:14
where the woman was hit. She was
crossing the road when the traffic | 0:05:14 | 0:05:23
lights for vehicles were running
green. As you said, police believe | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
she was hit first by a lorry, then
by another lorry, and then two cars. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:33
They have contacted the drivers of
two vehicles that they are still | 0:05:33 | 0:05:38
trying to trace the drivers of two
other vehicles involved. They have | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
issued CCTV images, the first of the
lorry. It is a white lorry, possibly | 0:05:42 | 0:05:50
a Mercedes that was seen in the area
at the time. The second vehicle is a | 0:05:50 | 0:05:55
black car, which would have been the
third vehicle to hit her. Police say | 0:05:55 | 0:06:03
there must be dash cam footage from
vehicles in the area between 6:30am | 0:06:03 | 0:06:07
and 7am. They say drivers may not
have been aware what they hit at the | 0:06:07 | 0:06:13
time but the appeal continues.
Have we learned anything more about | 0:06:13 | 0:06:20
the victim? So far we know she was a
29-year-old Polish national, who was | 0:06:20 | 0:06:26
due to be in London for an extended
few months. She had not been here | 0:06:26 | 0:06:31
long. She had been staying in
Wandsworth. Her family have been | 0:06:31 | 0:06:36
informed. Her mother flew over today
and identified her daughter. The | 0:06:36 | 0:06:42
name has not yet been released
because they are yet to tell family | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
and friends of the identity of the
woman. The police investigation | 0:06:46 | 0:06:51
continues. They are searching CCTV
of shops and other places in the | 0:06:51 | 0:06:56
area to find out what led to four
vehicles striking a woman and none | 0:06:56 | 0:07:00
of them stopping. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
Emergency shelters
for rough sleepers - | 0:07:04 | 0:07:05
are to open every day
the temperature drops below zero. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
Previously, such shelters were only
opened when three consecutive days | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
of freezing temperatures
were forecast in the capital. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has also
announced a "rapid response" hub - | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
to ensure first-time rough sleepers
never sleep on the pavement | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
for a second night. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:19
Ayshea Buksh has the details. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:20
When temperatures fall,
sleeping on the streets | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
in London gets harder. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
In the past, local authorities
would open up emergency | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
shelters after three nights
of subzero temperatures. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
Hello, nice to meet you. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
Now, Mayor Sadiq Khan has said help
for the capital's 8000 or so rough | 0:07:33 | 0:07:37
sleepers should come quicker,
and he's got extra money | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
from the Government to help all 33
boroughs take action. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:45
There are complex reasons
why people sleep rough. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
They could have mental health
issues, they could have problems | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
with welfare benefits,
there could be family breakdown... | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
The shortage of affordable housing
in London is one of the big causes. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:56
Often it could be
because their tenancy ends | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
with a private landlord. | 0:07:58 | 0:07:59
I'm determined to tackle this issue. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
I was pleased last year,
for the first time in eight years, | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
we didn't see an increase
in the numbers of people | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
sleeping rough, that's good. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:08
We now need to reduce it. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
Jeremy started sleeping rough
after a family bereavement. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
He now lives at St Mungo's hostel
in Hackney, but was originally | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
brought into an emergency shelter
during a cold snap two years ago. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:23
I remember I was sleeping
underneath the bridge, | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
it was really cold,
it was about 10:30 at night | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
and these two people from Thames
gave me an opportunity, | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
and said, would you like to come
and take a second night out? | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
Obviously, in hindsight,
I wasn't expecting anything | 0:08:33 | 0:08:37
too wonderful luxury,
that's ridiculous for people | 0:08:37 | 0:08:38
to think like that, but again,
it was just somewhere to be. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
It was warm and that
was all I wanted. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
But tackling rough sleeping
and homelessness in a city | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
with a high cost of living
and a housing crisis is something | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
charities will be doing well
beyond the Christmas period. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:56
I get quite frustrated when there's
a focus only in the cold months. | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
As far as I'm concerned,
it's an urgent issue all the time. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
The average age at death for someone
who is sleeping rough, | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
for a man it's 47 -
that's my age. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:12
And I do work with people and have
worked with people that have | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
unfortunately died on the streets. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
While homeless charities such
as St Mungo's work all year round, | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
Jeremy says he is now more positive
about his future. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
My hope for the future would be
to get a home, a nice, | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
warm home to stay in,
to go to university, | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
to study accountancy and finance,
and even further along, | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
I would actually like to work
within this sector in the future. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
This emergency response
could be activated soon, | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38
but tackling rough sleeping
is a more long-term issue. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:43
Ayshea Buksh, BBC London News. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
A child murderer from south London
is appealing a decision to deny him | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
legal aid at the inquest
into his victim's death. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:53
Ben Butler was jailed for life last
year for battering and killing | 0:09:53 | 0:09:56
six-year-old Ellie in 2013. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
His partner, Jennie Gray,
was also convicted for helping him | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
cover up the crime. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
They both now face the prospect
of having to represent themselves | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
at the hearing in March. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
A London council is urging
the government to abandon any plans | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
for Donald Trump to make a state
visit to London. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:16
The President is expected to visit
the UK in the new year. | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
Greenwich has passed a motion,
calling for any such | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
visit to be cancelled. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
They say if the trip does go ahead,
Mr Trump will not be | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
welcome in the borough. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:27
Councillors say they're alarmed
by Mr Trump's decision to retweet | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
Islamaphobic videos. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:40
The BBC understands no police were
stationed inside this year's V | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
Festival in Essex because of a
dispute over money. An agreement on | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
the level of policing and money
could not be reached. It is thought | 0:10:51 | 0:10:55
the organisers spent £138,000 on
policing the previous year. Around | 0:10:55 | 0:11:02
50,000 people attend the festival. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:03
The capital's 24-hour train
service will launch tonight | 0:11:03 | 0:11:05
on its east London line. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
Round the clock on weekends,
passengers will be connected | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
both sides of the river
between Dalston Junction | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
to New Cross Gate. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:12
The launch is the latest addition
to the existing Night Tube services | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
and it's hoped the night time
economy will benefit. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
Here's our Transport
Correspondent, Tom Edwards. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:22
The party season is in full swing,
and from tonight there's another | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
option for getting home. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
The overground will be 24 hours
on Fridays and Saturdays | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
from New Cross Gate to Dalston
Junction. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:35
I think it will promote a lot
of activity in London, | 0:11:35 | 0:11:37
I think it will promote
a lot of investment. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:39
Because we spend so much money
on Ubers, from Dalston especially, | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
so we can go straight home now. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
It's good for me because it means
I can be able to get home if I'm | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
around here seeing my friends. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:50
So I'm happy about that. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
Night services are already
run on five Tube lines. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
Since it launched, there have
been 9 million journeys. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
Jordan Desira works in Shoreditch. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
He says a night overground
will make his life much easier. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
Catching the overground every day
to work, it's definitely accessible | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
for me and if it's going to be 24
hours, I mean I can come to the city | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
whenever I want now,
I don't have to worry about trains | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
closing at any specific time. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
So, definitely, having options
will definitely be helpful. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
Transport for London says the night
services so far have contributed | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
more than £170 million
to London's economy. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:27
As yet, though, they're
not breaking even. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
I think with all new transport
services, you want to develop | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
the service over time. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:34
Breaking even is something
we will see about in the future. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:37
We're looking to develop it and run
it, four trains per hour | 0:12:37 | 0:12:41
at the moment in the areas
where we think there is most demand. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
It's important that we don't have
that last dash rush to the Tube, | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
because that encourages,
you know, some | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
anti-social behaviour. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:51
People just sort of concentrating
in one particular area, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
when we can take it at a much more
leisurely pace, and that's | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
really important. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
Night fares are off-peak,
and the night overground will be | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
extended to Highbury
and Islington in March. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
In the future, other
Tube lines could follow. | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
Tom Edwards, BBC London News. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
You may not be aware of this,
but if you are homeowner, | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
you may also own the space
immediately above your property, | 0:13:18 | 0:13:21
and it could be yours to sell. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
Is this the answer to
London's housing crisis, | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
building on the roofs
of existing buildings. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
Critics, though, argue that
would spoil the city skyline. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
Here's Caroline Davis. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
We've built out, we've built down,
and you'd think from looking | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
at London's ever-changing, ever
growing skyline, that we'd already | 0:13:38 | 0:13:41
built up, but not like this. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:45
Now we're building on. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
So is this a creative solution
to the housing crisis, | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
or a blight on your view? | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
Jovan and his neighbours were fed
up of living in flats | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
they couldn't afford to do up. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
We had also bad electrical wiring
system, and we decided | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
to find out a solution. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
And this is it... | 0:14:04 | 0:14:05
The tenants bought the freehold
to their block, sold the airspace | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
above it and used the money to do
up their flats. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
It's a large two bedroom
penthouse that we're doing... | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
Now their roof is £1 million
property and the developers say | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
it's just the start. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
A lot of buildings in London
are very sustainable. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
They can certainly sort of take
an additional floor on them. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:28
London's housing crisis won't be
resolved looking for large sites. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:33
This is the ideal solution. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:37
It's not only developers
who are looking upwards. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:39
According to property agent
Knight Frank, London's | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
rooftops could provide up
to 41,000 new homes. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:45
They've been working out
which buildings could be next | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
and want a slice of the action. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
This is an area that will be
profitable, both for the developers | 0:14:49 | 0:14:52
who are acting on the sites,
and agencies who are | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
advising clients. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:56
So can you make money
out of thin air? | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
Well, often if you own the freehold
to your property, you own the rights | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
to the air above it. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:03
Of course, not all buildings
are suitable for an extra floor | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
and you need planning permission,
and then, of course, | 0:15:06 | 0:15:08
there's the neighbours. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:10
The big problem always will be
even if I make some money out | 0:15:10 | 0:15:13
of doing it above my house,
my next-door neighbour might well | 0:15:13 | 0:15:16
have a problem with that,
may think it impinges | 0:15:16 | 0:15:19
on his or her privacy,
or if it destroys local character. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
The trouble is there will always be
reasons why people can find to stop | 0:15:22 | 0:15:26
new development taking place. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:28
But in cases where it works
structurally and it doesn't ruin | 0:15:28 | 0:15:32
the local character completely,
I think it's worth looking at. | 0:15:32 | 0:15:35
So it might not be for everyone,
but Jovan is happy to put up | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
with the building work
and a new neighbour. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
We are very happy, all the people
in the building, because we have now | 0:15:40 | 0:15:45
much better living conditions. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
It's much better to save green
belt than chimneys. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:53
Will building up take off? | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56
Watch this space. | 0:15:56 | 0:16:00
Caroline joins me now. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
So should homeowners be
rushing to sell the space | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
above their properties? | 0:16:04 | 0:16:09
It's not always as simple as that,
and even if you own the property and | 0:16:09 | 0:16:14
the airspace, you still need
planning permission to do the sort | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
of development we just saw. That was
a pretty expensive penthouse but not | 0:16:17 | 0:16:23
-- what if it is not just plush
apartments? According to the | 0:16:23 | 0:16:28
developers, they say they are
speaking to a housing association | 0:16:28 | 0:16:32
interested in building on top of
their properties. The benefit for | 0:16:32 | 0:16:37
the housing association is that they
already own the land and they also | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
know that they might be able to get
more social housing out of it if | 0:16:40 | 0:16:44
they get a good deal with the bad --
with the developer. Is it all good | 0:16:44 | 0:16:49
news? Not necessarily, because
building on homes means tested | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
option to those who live in the
properties. It might change the | 0:16:52 | 0:16:57
skyline, and realistically how many
will get through planning | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
permission? The Mayor of London once
more houses in the city. This could | 0:17:00 | 0:17:04
be a creative solution. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
Still to come... | 0:17:07 | 0:17:09
Its south-east London's time
to shine, as Eltham Palace | 0:17:09 | 0:17:11
is lit up for Christmas. | 0:17:11 | 0:17:13
And after a cold, wintry week
of weather, the question | 0:17:15 | 0:17:17
is how long will it last? | 0:17:17 | 0:17:19
Well I can tell you,
by Sunday it will all be over. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:22
More, coming up. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
The world's best dressage and show
jumping riders are in London | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
competing at the 2017 Olympia Horse
Show. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34 | |
Taking place until Monday,
the event is celebrating it's 110th | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
year and Sara Orchard
is there for us now. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:44
Thank you. Welcome to what many
describe as the world's greatest | 0:17:49 | 0:17:54
Equestrian party and it has
attracted the top riders from across | 0:17:54 | 0:17:58
the globe, to come here and compete.
Normally at this time of year, when | 0:17:58 | 0:18:03
the Olympia horse show comes to
town, we talk about Charlotte | 0:18:03 | 0:18:08
Dujardin and her dancing horse, but
the horse retired last year. That | 0:18:08 | 0:18:14
didn't stop Charlotte coming to
compete and she did an exhibition | 0:18:14 | 0:18:18
event with her brand-new horse mount
St John free stuff. So who is | 0:18:18 | 0:18:24
stealing all of the headlines for
Great Britain's riders? That has | 0:18:24 | 0:18:28
gone to the Olympic champion Ben
Mayer and Laura Renwick. With all of | 0:18:28 | 0:18:38
the details so far, here is James
Burridge. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:43
One giant leap into the unknown
for Laura Renwick and Top Dollar. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
Go on. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48 | |
Oh yes, she's done it! | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
Extraordinary! | 0:18:50 | 0:18:57
A spectacular and daring jump
of seven foot three to win | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
the Puissance in front
of a jubilant home crowd. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
So Laura, how do you and Top Dollar
jump something as high as this? | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
Looking at it from here,
I actually have no idea, | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
but the horse himself has got
incredible scope and I wasn't sure | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
how high he could go,
but I think he proved last night | 0:19:11 | 0:19:14
he can jump this. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:18
It was some feeling. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:19
Your heart must be in your mouth,
isn't it, when you approach | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
something like this? | 0:19:22 | 0:19:23
Yeah, it's like that split second,
as you're coming to it, | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
that split-second where you just
think, are they going to go, | 0:19:26 | 0:19:28
aren't they going to go? | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
I mean it's so daunting,
I can't explain to you. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
Some people say they it, I don't. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
But on a horse like him,
it made it a hell of a lot easier | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
and the elation and just the crowd,
they went wild and it was such | 0:19:37 | 0:19:41
an amazing feeling. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:42
Navigating this Olympia Arena
is tough, it is tight, | 0:19:42 | 0:19:44
there is very little room
to manoeuvre, and then there's | 0:19:44 | 0:19:46
the crowd, who are right on top
of the riders and the horses. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
They in turn get affected by it
every anguished cry, | 0:19:49 | 0:19:53
every exclamation of joy,
and that is why on Sunday | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
the World Cup event is just
so difficult to win. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:59
Control is very important. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:01
Obviously you need a horse that is
capable of jumping the jumps. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
Good balance around the ring,
everything comes very, | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
very fast and you have
to think very quick. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:12
Ben Maher knows what it
takes to win here. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
A former world number one
and Olympic champion, | 0:20:14 | 0:20:16
adept at handling the pressure
and sense of occasion. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:19
It's really about producing
the horse for the right time, | 0:20:19 | 0:20:23
and in the end, you need a little
bit of luck on the day. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
It's very..there's no margin
for error in our sport. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:29
You can't have a fence down
and come back from it. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:31
It's a little bit although nothing. | 0:20:31 | 0:20:33
A final walk-through
for the main event on Sunday. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:35
Valuable World Cup points
at stake and a check | 0:20:35 | 0:20:37
of £32,000 to the winner. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:41
The jumps this time, at least,
a little lower for Laura. | 0:20:41 | 0:20:45
James Burridge there with that
report. Of course, we are building | 0:20:49 | 0:20:53
up to that big showjumping event on
Sunday. You are probably wondering | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
what is going on behind the moment.
It is a special event at Olympia, | 0:20:56 | 0:21:02
where the named AP McCoy and Frankie
Dettori... You might be thinking, | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
they are jockeys, but they have
entered two showjumping team is here | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
at Olympia this. It is all about
them raising money for the injured | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
jockeys fund. I am here with greater
Britain's professional showjumper | 0:21:14 | 0:21:19
William Whitaker. Thank you for
joining us. We're watching them warm | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
up, what the jockeys are doing here
is not quite the same as what you | 0:21:22 | 0:21:26
do? We jump a little bit bigger than
they are tonight, but to be honest, | 0:21:26 | 0:21:30
I wouldn't want to do what they do,
so they are doing pretty well. I | 0:21:30 | 0:21:35
understand their technique is to go
very fast, is that always the best | 0:21:35 | 0:21:39
way to go? Unfortunately there is a
bit more to showjumping, a bit more | 0:21:39 | 0:21:44
accuracy and control of the horse
but that isn't taking away from what | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
they are doing because what they are
doing is truly amazing. Let's talk | 0:21:47 | 0:21:50
about what you are doing on Sunday.
This is the only UK event for World | 0:21:50 | 0:21:55
Cup qualifying, which will be in
April in Paris, how is the Great | 0:21:55 | 0:21:59
Britain team looking? Yeah... The
riders here are the top ten of the | 0:21:59 | 0:22:03
British guys in the world rankings.
It shows you the quality that is | 0:22:03 | 0:22:06
here. If you look over the years,
British riders have always if not | 0:22:06 | 0:22:13
won, always given a great fight on
Sunday. I think this year will be | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
the same. I wouldn't be surprised to
see a British rider winning. Quickly | 0:22:17 | 0:22:22
tell me, there are so many events
here at Olympia, what is your | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
favourite events, and have a sneak
look at? There are too many! Now I | 0:22:25 | 0:22:31
have two little children, I know
they enjoy the dogs on Shetland | 0:22:31 | 0:22:33
ponies. There is something for
everyone, it's a great occasion. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:37
Thank you so much be time, William.
Good luck on Sunday. If you want to | 0:22:37 | 0:22:42
follow the showjumping on Sunday it
is live on BBC Two on Sunday. | 0:22:42 | 0:22:48
Thank you, we are looking forward to
that! | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51 | |
The tradition to decorate
the outside of your house | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
with Christmas lights dates back
hundreds of years. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
We are seeing a lot of this. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
It was candles in those days but now
dazzling electric bulbs | 0:22:57 | 0:23:00
and even lasers are used
for Christmas illuminations. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:04
And for the first time in its
history, Eltham Palace has embraced | 0:23:04 | 0:23:06
the trend with a medieval-themed
light show. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
Wendy Hurrell has
been to take a look. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:12
I met Eltham Palace in Greenwich
this evening. It is a little spot | 0:23:12 | 0:23:17
that Henry VIII spent a lot of his
childhood at it would have stood | 0:23:17 | 0:23:21
1000 acres of deer Park back then.
It fell into some disrepair but was | 0:23:21 | 0:23:29
bought by rich family in the 1930s
and that is one of the reasons it's | 0:23:29 | 0:23:33
one of the finest examples of art
Deco architecture and design in the | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
country. Now it has been bathed in
light, as you can see behind me. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
Take a look. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
So, it's south-east London's turn to
shine. Yes, absolutely. Eltham | 0:23:54 | 0:23:58
Palace is part of a new series of
chartered events at six Heritage | 0:23:58 | 0:24:03
sites across the country and it is
wonderful to bring it here to | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
south-east London and light up this
unique area of London. And is a | 0:24:06 | 0:24:11
medieval theme? Absolutely.
Illumination events are increasingly | 0:24:11 | 0:24:15
popular at the moment, particularly
at this time of year. English | 0:24:15 | 0:24:19
Heritage has some unique sites that
we can put a historical twist on. At | 0:24:19 | 0:24:24
Eltham, we are literally lighting up
the medieval and Tudor side of | 0:24:24 | 0:24:28
history, telling the stories of
Henry VIII. It's nice to have some | 0:24:28 | 0:24:33
light in the dark months.
Absolutely. A bit of cheer at a | 0:24:33 | 0:24:37
really dark and cold time of year!
Exactly. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:41
Looks great, doesn't it? Let's look
at the weather, I don't know if that | 0:24:44 | 0:24:49
is great... | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
at the weather, I don't know if that
is great... | 0:24:53 | 0:24:54
Today, lots of sunshine. This from
Kew Gardens earlier this afternoon. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
And it is all set to change.
Tomorrow is the last day of the cold | 0:24:57 | 0:25:03
weather but largely dry. Rain is on
its way, make the most of it. This | 0:25:03 | 0:25:07
is the story today. We have seen
some sunshine but the clouds have | 0:25:07 | 0:25:10
been spilling in. These nuisance
showers have been drifting in off | 0:25:10 | 0:25:14
the North Sea in the last few hours.
Though showers are set to continue | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
for another few hours. Not great
news if you're out and about | 0:25:17 | 0:25:21
celebrating some Christmas parties.
As the showers either way we get | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
into the early hours of the morning,
clear skies and a frost is likely to | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
form. It will be a cold start on
Saturday. Just like yesterday, it | 0:25:28 | 0:25:33
looks like Hertfordshire and
Bedfordshire Ceballos values, minus | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
four. Yes, we will wake up to views
like this is perhaps first thing, a | 0:25:36 | 0:25:42
frost is around that on Saturday
that will be the best of the dry and | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
cold weather, if that is the story
you like. My older and wetter | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
weather set to arrive on Sunday. We
start on Saturday frosty but there | 0:25:48 | 0:25:53
will be some lovely spells of
sunshine. It won't be too bad at | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
all. A light north-westerly breeze.
Hopefully the sunshine will | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
compensate a little. The
temperatures will struggle to climb | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
very high. In fact, as we get into
the afternoon, we could see the | 0:26:03 | 0:26:07
threat of a few isolated showers.
3-6 degrees. If you watched me last | 0:26:07 | 0:26:13
night, Sunday has changed a little.
It is worth bearing in mind. It | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
looks as though some they will be
wetter earlier on, so if you are up | 0:26:16 | 0:26:21
and out early, any time after do on,
