back with the late news
at 10 o'clock. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
Now on BBC One it's time
for the news where you are. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:15
Good evening, welcome
to BBC London News, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
I'm Claudia-Liza Armah. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:22
A great-grandmother says she's been
unable to leave her flat | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
for seven months after the lift
in her block broke down. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
Bernice Grant and her daughter say
they have been offered a new place | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
but they may have to pay for it
to be made suitable for the | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
81-year-old, who's disabled. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
Emma North reports. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:36
For seven months, Bernice Grant
hasn't left her flat. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
I miss going out. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
To see people and talk to people. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
I want to go places. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:45
Go to the day centre, to service.
But now I can't go anywhere. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
The lift in her block in Penge
broke down at the end of May. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
It is still broken. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
Arthritis stops Mrs Grant
from moving very far, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
and the four flights up to her flat
are well beyond her. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:59
She relies entirely on her daughter. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
Thank you very much. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
My daughter, she has done her best. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
She sees that I have something
to eat and drink | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
in the days while she is away. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
She keeps in touch
with me all the time. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
And she comes home in the evening,
I am so glad to see her. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
The housing association which
owns the block said | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
replacing the lifts takes time
and isn't straightforward. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
It also says two other
properties have been offered | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
to Mrs Grant and her daughter. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
Mrs Grant needs a wheelchair
and says they had to turn one down | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
because it was on a steep slope. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
The other, her daughter says,
was uninhabitable. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:41
A spokesman for Affinity Sutton
said, "Whenever we make an offer | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
to a tenant, we ensure
we are satisfied the property meets | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
the whole household's needs in terms
of accessibility and location." | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
Mrs Grant and her daughter
have been offered | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
and have said yes to a new flat,
but they have been told | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
it is not suitable for someone
who is disabled and there is no | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
money to pay for any changes -
they may have to foot the bill. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:04
I am blessed, she's my mum. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:10
She done a lot for us
when we were young and growing up. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
It is payback time.
Just take our time. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:20
The main thing is, once we have
somewhere to call our home again, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
that it what we want,
that is what we need. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:31
Both Mrs Grant and her daughter say
they can't wait for next year, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
they want things to get better
whatever the cost. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
Emma North, BBC London News. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
Let's get more now | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
on the murder investigation
in Finsbury Park. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
The body of a young woman was found
near the sports area of the park. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
Police say she may have been
murdered on Christmas Eve. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
Tolu Adeoye is there for us tonight. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
Tolu, what more can you tell us? | 0:02:50 | 0:02:59
Yes, all Ford, flowers and cards
have been left here at Finsbury | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
Park, paying tribute to the woman
whose body was discovered here | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
yesterday. A member of the public
came across her body at an | 0:03:05 | 0:03:10
outbuilding next to a sports pitch,
and ambulance was called, but you | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
was pronounced dead at the scene. We
understand the woman was in her 20s, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
a woman was reported missing in the
days leading up to the discovery, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:23
but the body has not yet been
identified. We have been here | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
through the day, we have seen
forensics teams working away, the | 0:03:26 | 0:03:30
tent is still up tonight. We don't
know how the woman was killed, but a | 0:03:30 | 0:03:34
postmortem examination was due to
take place today. This is being | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
treated as a murder investigation,
police believe this woman was killed | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
on Christmas Eve, they are asking
anyone with any information you may | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
have seen anything suspicious in
this area to get in touch with them, | 0:03:45 | 0:03:50
but the woman still has not been
identified, and police are appealing | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
for witnesses. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
A woman has been left
with life-changing injuries | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
after she was sprayed with acid
in Canary Wharf. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
The 36-year-old had been walking
alone on Westferry Road | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
near South Quay station at around
seven o'clock last night | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
when she was attacked. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:05
She was taken to hospital
with burns to her face and leg. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
Police are going through CCTV
to try and find the suspect, | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
who wasn't seen by the victim. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:15
Winter in London can
be a difficult time | 0:04:15 | 0:04:16
for the capital's homeless. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
But one entrepreneur has come up
with a new way to help. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
Beam is a crowdfunding website
that allows people | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
to donate money to those struggling
with homelessness so they can get | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
the training and qualifications
for the job they want. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
Caroline Davies has been to speak
to one of the first people | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
to be helped by the scheme. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
Tony is one of London's
hidden homeless. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
He's spent the last decade
in and out of hostels | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
and on friends' sofas. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
After time in prison,
he struggled to find permanent work. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
It's disappointing,
really, it's a bit sad, | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
odd jobs here and there,
a bit of driving, | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
but it was nothing permanent. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
Tony started training
as an electrician, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:56
but he ran out of money to fund it. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
Tony was told by a charity
about a new crowdfunding | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
platform called Beam. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
Tony put his story up online | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
and asked for donations
of over £4000. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
Beam worked for Tony, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:09
but the platform is only
in its first few months. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
One in £11 donated goes
towards the operating costs. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
It's just one example
of how Londoners have tried | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
to do something about homelessness. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:21
I don't think government or any
charity can necessarily solve | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
this massive problem on their own,
and for us this is really | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
about everyone in this ecosystem
playing to their strengths, | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
and that means government,
that means charities, | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
and that also means
technology organisations. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:31
Tony is now back on his course. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:38
I enjoy it, fixing things, hands-on, | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
that is a favourite thing of mine,
looking for faults. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:46
When he does start work,
he'll donate some of his salary | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
to help the next generation
of Beam members. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:50
But why electrician? | 0:05:51 | 0:05:52
When people are in the dark,
bring a bit of light into the world! | 0:05:52 | 0:05:58
Caroline Davies, BBC London News. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
Tonight, the Arsenal
manager Arsene Wenger | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
will take charge of his 810th
Premier League game | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
when the Gunners
visit Crystal Palace, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:09
equalling Sir Alex
Ferguson's record. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
He took charge of Arsenal
in October 1996 | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
and has overseen 467
wins and 145 defeats. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:16
Despite ongoing pressure from some
fans who want him to leave, | 0:06:16 | 0:06:25
in his 21 years he's won three
league titles and seven FA Cups. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
It's been another cold
day across the capital, | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
like here in Richmond Park,
but will the icy | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
conditions continue? | 0:06:33 | 0:06:34
Elizabeth Rizzini has the weather. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:41
Good evening. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:42
It was a crisp and sparkling
winter's day today, | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
a cold and frosty start,
but lots of blue sky and sunshine | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
about to compensate, of course. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:48
That does mean clear skies
for a good while overnight tonight, | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
though, so temperatures could drop
as low as perhaps minus three, | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
but then it will start to get
a bit milder as we head | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
into tomorrow morning. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
But early risers, you must watch out
for the possibility of some ice | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
forming as the rain spreads
in from the West. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
But by the time most
of us wake up, well, | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
it's a rather wet start to the day,
some heavy outbreaks of rain | 0:07:07 | 0:07:11
on and off through the morning,
and it will feel quite | 0:07:11 | 0:07:13
windy as well. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:14
But that system will clear
into the afternoon to leave us | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
with some dryer, brighter spells,
probably a fine end to the day, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
also some showers around
for a good while as well. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
Top temperatures tomorrow -
7 or 8 degrees Celsius, | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
so already starting to feel milder. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
But it will get milder still over
the course of the weekend, | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
12 or 13 degrees and Saturday
and on Sunday. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
Further spells of wet
and windy weather to come, | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
so a mild and unsettled end to 2017. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:40
That's it from me
and the evening team. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
I'll be back with our
late bulletin at 22:15. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
There's more on all of our stories
on the BBC London website. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
For now, though,
Have a good evening. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:54 |
