we are back with the late news
at nine o'clock - | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
now on BBC One it's time
for the news where you are. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:14
Good evening and welcome
to BBC London News. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
I'm Claudia-Liza Armah. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:17
With hundreds of thousands
of people heading | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
into central London for this year's
New Year Eve celebrations, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
the Met police has confirmed
there will be additional armed | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
officers on patrol. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
The enhanced security comes
after a review following this | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
year's terror attacks. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:30
And it's not just Scotland Yard,
the London Ambulance Service is also | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
preparing for its busiest night
of the year. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
With the latest, let's speak
to Frankie McCamley, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
who is on Embankment tonight. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
Security being ramped up for Sunday
night's celebrations. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:45
Yes, absolutely. We've seen barriers
being put awe longside the pavements | 0:00:45 | 0:00:51
-- alongside the pavements. We've
been speaking to police who say | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
there will be extra armed officers
out for Sunday night's fireworks, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
which takes place on barges in the
middle of the Thames. It's not just | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
a big operation for the event
organisers. It's also a huge amount | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
of planning for security and
emergency services, who have spent | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
months planning for Sunday.
Last year's fireworks display, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:15
watched by thousands in the capital,
all lining the Thames to take in the | 0:01:15 | 0:01:20
sights and sounds. It's one of the
biggest events of the year, with | 0:01:20 | 0:01:24
preparations well under way. But
with so many descending on one area, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
security needs to be stepped up.
This year, police say a number of | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
protection measures are being put in
place. What people see as they come | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
into the footprint, they will see an
effective search and secure regime. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
They'll see physical barriers. They
will see uniformed police officers. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:45
They will see visible uniformed
private security contractors. What | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
they won't see is a number of covert
resources that are also working | 0:01:49 | 0:01:54
alongside us to keep this event
safe. The Met says it's learned | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
lesson that's year, following four
major terror incidents in the city, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
which left 14 people dead and dozens
more injured. Elsewhere, other | 0:02:01 | 0:02:08
emergency services are stepping
things up for the big event. For | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
London Ambulance service, New Year's
Eve is the busiest night of the | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
year. Dozens of extra staff are
going to be on shift in this call | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
centre. Tear expecting to take
around 2,000 extra calls. Everybody | 0:02:18 | 0:02:24
likes to party on New Year's Eve.
Simple | 0:02:24 | 0:02:41
We want you to be healthy. We want
you to have a great night, not a | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
night in the back of an ambulance or
emergency department. For those | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
needing medical help attending the
display, the advice is not to call | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
999 and find one of nine St John
Ambulance treatment centres in the | 0:02:51 | 0:02:56
area, including one at Westminster
Abbey, another an embankment station | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
and although police say they have no
intelligence of a planned attack, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
people are being urged to stay
vigilant but most importantly, enjoy | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
the show. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
A three-year-old has been seriously
injured in a collision | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
with a car in north London. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
The boy was hurt while
walking on Shoot-Up-Hill | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
in Cricklewood around 3pm yesterday. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
He is currently in a serious
but stable condition in hospital. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
The Met's Serious
Collision Investigation | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
is appealing for witnesses. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
The driver did stop at the scene
but no arrests have been made. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
An investigation into how
Surrey Police handled allegations | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
of sexual offences by Jimmy Savile
has concluded the Force | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
did act appropriately. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
The police watchdog had been asked
to look into whether officers | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
took statements made
by several victims seriously. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
They had told detectives the TV
entertainer had abused girls | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
at Duncroft School in Staines
during the 1970s. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:52
Surrey Police says it accepts
there are things which should have | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
been done differently in its 2007
investigation and has | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
since implemented changes. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:03
Heartbroken friends of a woman found
murdered in North London have | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
described her as a kind,
fun and life-loving person. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
The body of Uliana Tudos
was found yesterday | 0:04:09 | 0:04:11
afternoon in Finsbury Park. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
Police believe the 22-year-old,
who was also known as Julie, | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
was murdered on Christmas Eve. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
Ayshea Buksh is at the
scene for us tonight. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
And Ayshea, we're finding
out more about Julie? | 0:04:21 | 0:04:27
Yes, that's right. Much of this park
has been closed for the past few | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
days as police forensics search for
clues. Her body was found here. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:36
She'd been murdered a few days ago.
Police believe, it was found near an | 0:04:36 | 0:04:42
out building in a part of the park.
Postmortem has shown she was stabbed | 0:04:42 | 0:04:48
in the stomach and sustained a head
injury. Police believe the last time | 0:04:48 | 0:04:52
she had been seen alive was when she
finished her shift at a local pub in | 0:04:52 | 0:04:57
Camden on Christmas eve. She then
was due to come home to her flat | 0:04:57 | 0:05:03
near here in Finsbury Park and then
go on to friends in Enfield for | 0:05:03 | 0:05:07
Christmas Day. But she never
arrived. Police are ear to speak to | 0:05:07 | 0:05:13
anyone who may have any information
about what happened. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:20
We're doing typically house-to-house
inquiries. We're working closely | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
with homicide command. Our focus
here as well is to engage with the | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
community and try and reassure them
about this is such a rare case and | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
they need to go about their
business, just be aware of their | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
environment and if they have any -
you know come across suspicious | 0:05:35 | 0:05:40
incidents please contact us.
Flowers laid here by friends, here | 0:05:40 | 0:05:46
at the park, describe her as a kind
and friendly soul. Anyone with any | 0:05:46 | 0:05:51
information should contact the
police on 101 or 0le 00, 555 111. So | 0:05:51 | 0:06:00
far no arrests have been made. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:06

a weather warning today | 0:06:06 | 0:06:09

as you can see from these pictures. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
A bridge just outside
Oxted has been flooded, | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
trapping one driver,
who had to be towed. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:17
While a large van overturned
following a crash on the M25 | 0:06:17 | 0:06:20
between Junction 8 and 9
near Reigate, causing long delays. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:27
Staying with the weather,
and I'm afraid to say | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
there is more rain on the way. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
Here's the forecast
with Elizabeth Rizzini. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:33
Hello, good evening. There were
brighter spells around at times | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
today. But a lot of wet weather too.
There's more rain in the forecast | 0:06:38 | 0:06:43
over the course of the weekend. Most
of this rain will fall by night. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:47
It's not a bad looking weekend of
weather. Certainly it's mild for | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
this time of year. Now overnight
tonight, temperatures drop away at | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
first and we'll see clear skies for
a time. The cloud amounts will | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
increase, then we get the rain
sweeping in from the south-west. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:59
Some of it is heavy at times. Mostly
clearing into tomorrow morning and a | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
mild start to the day. Nine or ten
degrees Celsius. Bit of a damp start | 0:07:03 | 0:07:08
for north-eastern Home Counties.
That cloud should clear and we'll | 0:07:08 | 0:07:11
get brighter spells developing. The
best of the sunshine tomorrow, | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
probably towards northern Home
Counties. But it will feel mild, | 0:07:14 | 0:07:19
highs of 13 Celsius. A brisk
westerly wind blowing. Breezy | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
throughout. Clouding over by the end
of the day. Wet and windy on | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
Saturday night. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:51 |
