Bye for now. for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:13.
Good evening and welcome to BBC London News. | :00:14. | :00:15.
The Liberal Democrats say they are the only main party | :00:16. | :00:21.
in the capital who will fight plans to build a third runway | :00:22. | :00:25.
Both Labour and the Conservatives are backing expansion. | :00:26. | :00:29.
But how important is the issue to voters - and will it be | :00:30. | :00:32.
Our transport correspondent, Tom Edwards, reports. | :00:33. | :00:38.
They are coming back and they're taking the villages the way | :00:39. | :00:41.
At this recent meeting it was very clear that | :00:42. | :00:46.
Heathrow expansion splits opinion, communities and political parties, | :00:47. | :00:52.
The main issue in these elections in my opinion will be Brexit, | :00:53. | :00:59.
but it wouldn't be too far off from Brexit. | :01:00. | :01:04.
It's just going to be one issue that I'm thinking about, | :01:05. | :01:10.
But it's an important one for this area in particular. | :01:11. | :01:15.
It would be a case of if people are still trying to push | :01:16. | :01:18.
through a runway I wouldn't be keen to vote for that party, | :01:19. | :01:21.
Many businesses want a third runway for jobs. | :01:22. | :01:26.
It's also being used to show that the UK is open | :01:27. | :01:29.
The Conservatives say they'll push ahead with expansion of Heathrow. | :01:30. | :01:34.
But some senior members in both parties oppose another runway. | :01:35. | :01:41.
The third runway I think would do all sorts of damage | :01:42. | :01:45.
in terms of noise pollution, which we can hear now, | :01:46. | :01:51.
and above all of air pollution, and I don't think it's been | :01:52. | :01:54.
I don't think any government will withstand public | :01:55. | :01:58.
opinion on this matter, because whatever happens | :01:59. | :02:00.
in the general election, the real issue is going to be debated. | :02:01. | :02:02.
Members were reminded of the county's long | :02:03. | :02:05.
tradition of resistance to interference and oppression. | :02:06. | :02:08.
Aviation expansion has perplexed politicians for decades. | :02:09. | :02:11.
Recommendations and commissions have come and gone, but no | :02:12. | :02:14.
new full-length runway has been laid in the south-east since the 1940s. | :02:15. | :02:19.
Expansion is opposed by the Greens and today, | :02:20. | :02:23.
the Liberal Democrats reaffirmed they'd continue to | :02:24. | :02:25.
The residents - and there are very many millions of them who live under | :02:26. | :02:31.
the flight path who are going to be affected by a third runway - | :02:32. | :02:34.
will not want, in my view, politicians to simply | :02:35. | :02:36.
throw their hands up in the air and say, it's too difficult, | :02:37. | :02:39.
it's agreed, so let's forget about it. | :02:40. | :02:41.
We'll continue to campaign against it. | :02:42. | :02:45.
Experts fear Heathrow expansion is being overshadowed. | :02:46. | :02:49.
Around the airport almost all candidates and councils | :02:50. | :02:51.
are against extending Heathrow, but for the rest of the country, | :02:52. | :02:56.
and perhaps particularly for the government, it's seen | :02:57. | :03:00.
as an issue of sending a signal about the future of the country, | :03:01. | :03:03.
and I think whoever wins the election, certainly if it's | :03:04. | :03:06.
Conservatives or Labour, they'll want to send out that signal | :03:07. | :03:08.
Heathrow Airport says expansion will boost trade. | :03:09. | :03:14.
Some local councils say the environmental costs are too high | :03:15. | :03:18.
and whatever happens on election day those arguments will not stop. | :03:19. | :03:25.
Where does this leave the whole issue of airport expansion? The | :03:26. | :03:36.
positions have moved now, so the two main political parties seem to | :03:37. | :03:39.
accent that expansion is needed for the good of the economy. But I don't | :03:40. | :03:44.
think that is the end of the matter. What is going to be happening, or | :03:45. | :03:48.
could happen, is we move into another phase. I've been speaking to | :03:49. | :03:51.
some anti-expansion campaigners today. They say they will fight on. | :03:52. | :03:55.
They say politics can change quickly. What they really want, what | :03:56. | :04:00.
they are looking at to get is tough legally binding conditions attached | :04:01. | :04:05.
to the project, particularly around pollution, noise and night flights. | :04:06. | :04:08.
So if it is built on residents get the best possible deal. So this is a | :04:09. | :04:13.
long way from over. Plenty of political battles ahead. Tom, thank | :04:14. | :04:15.
you. Staying with the general election - | :04:16. | :04:17.
BBC London is hosting We'll be hearing from | :04:18. | :04:20.

forecast. If you're enjoying the weather, you | :05:07. | :05:15.
are in for a treat this week. Feeling quite pleasant and warm. We | :05:16. | :05:19.

throughout this week, both by day and night. We go into this evening | :05:24. | :05:26.
and overnight with clear skies. Out in the countryside we could fall to | :05:27. | :05:30.
single figures for a time. In central London and other areas, | :05:31. | :05:34.
11-12. We'll have beautiful blue skies for the morning commute. | :05:35. | :05:37.
They'll see new home, just a little bit of cloud perhaps grazing through | :05:38. | :05:41.
parts of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. But London itself | :05:42. | :05:45.
settled and often sunny week, we'll settled and often sunny week, we'll | :05:46. | :05:50.
get those temperatures again and again. | :05:51. | :05:55.
I'll be back later tonight at 10:25pm here on BBC One. | :05:56. | :05:58.
Good evening. The weather in the week ahead is set to be warmer and | :05:59. | :06:15.
drier. We had rain today, from this cloud in Scotland and Northern | :06:16. | :06:18.
Ireland. Notice the latter stages | :06:19. | :06:19. |
