Many of us saw heavy downpours on Saturday. Sunday has been warmer and | :00:16. | :00:30.
drier. Things will be feeling warm and looking dry with high pressure | :00:31. | :00:31.
in charge. Good evening and welcome to BBC | :00:32. | :00:37.
London News, I'm Sonja Jessup. The Liberal Democrats say | :00:38. | :00:39.
they are the only major party in the capital who will fight plans | :00:40. | :00:42.
to build a third runway Both Labour and the Conservatives | :00:43. | :00:45.
are backing expansion. But how important is the issue | :00:46. | :00:48.
to voters - and will it be Our Transport Correspondent, | :00:49. | :00:51.
Tom Edwards, reports. They are coming back | :00:52. | :00:53.
and they are taking the villages the way they wanted | :00:54. | :00:55.
to the first time round... At this recent meeting | :00:56. | :00:58.
it was very clear that Heathrow expansion split opinion, | :00:59. | :01:00.
communities, and political parties. The main issue in these elections, | :01:01. | :01:03.
in my opinion, will be Brexit. But it wouldn't be too | :01:04. | :01:07.
far off from Brexit. It's just going to be one issue | :01:08. | :01:09.
that I'm thinking about, not the main one, I guess, | :01:10. | :01:12.
but it is an important one Well it would be a case | :01:13. | :01:15.
of if people were trying I wouldn't be keen to vote for that | :01:16. | :01:19.
party or that candidate. Many businesses want | :01:20. | :01:24.
a third runway for jobs. It's also been used to show | :01:25. | :01:26.
that the UK is open The Conservatives say they will push | :01:27. | :01:29.
ahead with expansion of Heathrow. Some senior members in both parties | :01:30. | :01:32.
oppose another runway. A third runway, I think, | :01:33. | :01:40.
would do all sorts of damage in terms of noise pollution, | :01:41. | :01:43.
which we can hear now, and above all, of air | :01:44. | :01:45.
pollution, as well. -- I don't think it has been | :01:46. | :01:47.
properly thought through. I don't think any government | :01:48. | :01:58.
is going to be able to withstand public opinion on this matter | :01:59. | :02:01.
because whatever happens in the general election the real | :02:02. | :02:03.
issue is going to be debated. Aviation expansion has perplexed | :02:04. | :02:06.
politicians for decades. Recommendations and commissions have | :02:07. | :02:08.
come and gone, but no new full-length runway has been laid | :02:09. | :02:10.
in the south-east since the 1940s. And today the Liberal Democrats | :02:11. | :02:14.
reaffirmed their continue -- And today the Liberal Democrats | :02:15. | :02:26.
reaffirmed they'll continue The residents, and there are very | :02:27. | :02:28.
many millions of them who live under the flight path, | :02:29. | :02:36.
who are going to be affected by a third runway, will not | :02:37. | :02:42.
want to, in my view, politicians to simply | :02:43. | :02:46.
throw their hands up in the air and say, oh, | :02:47. | :02:48.
it's too difficult, it agreed. We will continue to | :02:49. | :02:50.
campaign against it. Experts say Heathrow expansion | :02:51. | :02:53.
is being overshadowed. It is seen as an issue | :02:54. | :02:55.
of sending a signal I think whoever wins the election, | :02:56. | :02:57.
certainly if it is Conservatives or Labour, they will want to send | :02:58. | :03:01.
out that signal of Britain Heathrow Airport says | :03:02. | :03:05.
expansion will lose trade. Some local council say the | :03:06. | :03:07.
environmental costs are too high. Whatever happens on election day | :03:08. | :03:09.
those arguments will not stop. -- Heathrow Airport says | :03:10. | :03:12.
expansion will boost trade. And Tom joins me now - | :03:13. | :03:14.
so where does this leave the whole It feels like we have come full | :03:15. | :03:20.
circle with the Conservatives and Labour. They both know what to | :03:21. | :03:23.
expand Heathrow. But I don't think it's the end of the debate. It could | :03:24. | :03:28.
just be moving into another phase. I've spoken to some anti-expansion | :03:29. | :03:33.
campaigners today. They want to fight on. They say politics can | :03:34. | :03:37.
change quickly. Interestingly they now want tough legally binding | :03:38. | :03:42.
conditions attached to the project, particularly around noise, night | :03:43. | :03:45.
flights, pollution, and air quality is a key issue now. Residents will | :03:46. | :03:51.
get the best possible deal. This is a long way from being over. Plenty | :03:52. | :03:55.
of political battles ahead. Thank you. | :03:56. | :03:57.
The brother of an engineer from Surrey - who was shot | :03:58. | :03:59.
dead in the French Alps - has called for a High Court | :04:00. | :04:02.
his wife, and her mother, were discovered on a remote | :04:03. | :04:07.
His brother, Zaid al-Hilli, said a High Court judge | :04:08. | :04:10.
because the French investigation had failed to uncover the truth. | :04:11. | :04:17.
Well I hope you've enjoyed the sunshine today - | :04:18. | :04:19.
Here's Wendy Hurrell with the forecast. | :04:20. | :04:25.
Your commute to work will look something like this. | :04:26. | :04:31.
Blue skies overhead, temperatures in the mid teens. | :04:32. | :04:34.
Come the afternoon and your evening commute, well, London | :04:35. | :04:36.
