I'm Asad Ahmad. for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:17.
So the focus on cladding on high-rise buildings | :00:18. | :00:21.
continues across London, but so do questions about the way | :00:22. | :00:26.
the deadly fire at Grenfell Tower was initially handled by Kensington | :00:27. | :00:28.
Plans were already in place to deal with a major emergency in London, | :00:29. | :00:36.
but they weren't acted upon, as our Political Editor, | :00:37. | :00:38.
Why didn't help kick in immediately for those who survived, | :00:39. | :00:41.
It took 48 hours for the council, Kensington Chelsea, to call for | :00:42. | :00:48.
The former civil servant who helped set up London's | :00:49. | :00:54.
emergency response procedures, says they are exemplary on paper. | :00:55. | :00:56.
It was the system of triggering them which | :00:57. | :00:58.
I think there'll have to be a better system in place, | :00:59. | :01:02.
one where Central Government might have to intervene early on and other | :01:03. | :01:06.
boroughs are allowed to intervene early on to ask very serious | :01:07. | :01:08.
questions, to say, do you want help with sending it now? | :01:09. | :01:11.
With these events you should throw the | :01:12. | :01:14.
resources at it early and get ahead of it. | :01:15. | :01:16.
By the time you have failed to do that, it is too late. | :01:17. | :01:19.
But financial help and re-housing plans | :01:20. | :01:21.
Quite rightly, one of the things we'll have | :01:22. | :01:25.
to look at is maybe it should be the Government | :01:26. | :01:27.
But the Government has now, later in the day, | :01:28. | :01:31.
but absolutely now on top of us, and absolutely funnelling | :01:32. | :01:34.
And one of the things that I think will also come out of | :01:35. | :01:39.
this inquiry is make sure that we look at | :01:40. | :01:44.
fire regulations in the | :01:45. | :01:46.
As tenants in four Camden blocks spent a second night away | :01:47. | :01:48.
from their homes, at least half a dozen of London's | :01:49. | :01:49.
councils are known to have some cladding problems. | :01:50. | :01:52.
And the inspections of the last week have | :01:53. | :01:56.
The cladding issue is being inspected, I | :01:57. | :01:59.
But we had a fire in my constituency yesterday, | :02:00. | :02:03.
in a lower rise building, without cladding and I'm really | :02:04. | :02:07.
concerned that the Government needs to step up | :02:08. | :02:09.
the inspections and support across blocks that could have wider issues. | :02:10. | :02:14.
No-one's quite clear yet what Grenfell Tower | :02:15. | :02:19.
And as investigations continue across London boroughs | :02:20. | :02:32.
into cladding around buildings, Tara Welsh, has been to Wandsworth, | :02:33. | :02:34.
where a high-rise there has failed a test by Government | :02:35. | :02:37.
You can see the Wembley arch, and slightly to the right | :02:38. | :02:47.
you actually can see the building where the fire took place... | :02:48. | :02:49.
cladding was put on Jose's building when it was refurbished. | :02:50. | :02:54.
It's now been tested and doesn't meet current fire-safety standards. | :02:55. | :02:57.
To me, at the moment, I don't feel that worried, | :02:58. | :03:03.
because obviously if the fire brigade come in, | :03:04. | :03:05.
does meet requirements, except the outside, then we just | :03:06. | :03:10.
What I'm hoping for is that, by Monday, I will see | :03:11. | :03:17.
scaffolding going up, and the council say, | :03:18. | :03:19.
The council have told us that in response to the findings, | :03:20. | :03:22.
a specialist team from the Fire Brigade have checked | :03:23. | :03:24.
things like fire doors, electrical cupboards and dry risers, | :03:25. | :03:29.
and they say they found there is no reason for people to move out. | :03:30. | :03:34.
Wandsworth Council said this is different to Camden - | :03:35. | :03:37.
tower blocks were evacuated there when officers found | :03:38. | :03:39.
problems with insulation, gas pipes and fire doors, | :03:40. | :03:43.
Here, the council says it's been confirmed there | :03:44. | :03:46.
is no undue risk to residents, but the cladding will be removed | :03:47. | :03:50.
as soon as possible, and fire marshals will be stationed here. | :03:51. | :03:54.
I find it quite awful, actually, because there's a lot of old people | :03:55. | :03:57.
that live in the block, single mums with children, you know, | :03:58. | :04:00.
and it's quite devastating, actually, to think all | :04:01. | :04:02.
I think that the concern for vulnerable people, | :04:03. | :04:07.
those trying to get down a single staircase in a panic situation, | :04:08. | :04:11.
is going to be something quite unnerving to a lot of people here. | :04:12. | :04:14.
But I think there's also a certain calmness the council put in place, | :04:15. | :04:18.
elements of due diligence, fire watch et cetera | :04:19. | :04:22.
Cladding on blocks from seven London boroughs have now failed | :04:23. | :04:29.
Government tests as consequences of the Grenfell Tower | :04:30. | :04:31.
Dry, sunny and very warm - but not too hot for most. | :04:32. | :04:45.
Top temperature of 24 Celsius in town and slightly cooler | :04:46. | :04:47.
That's it from the BBC London weekend team. | :04:48. | :04:51.
I hope you stay with us during the week. | :04:52. | :04:53.
Good evening. We start with a look at the big picture, which is a broad | :04:54. | :05:16.
area of low pressure moving from our shores. The winds ease down as the | :05:17. | :05:21.
isobars move apart. We look at the west for the next area of low | :05:22. | :05:26.
pressure. So, it is quieter overnight. | :05:27. | :05:28. |
