That's it, I'll be back with the late News At Ten.

:00:00.:00:00.

So the focus on cladding on high-rise buildings

:00:00.:00:19.

continues across London, but so do questions about the way

:00:20.:00:22.

was initially handled by Kensington and Chelsea Council.

:00:23.:00:28.

With plans already in place to deal with a major emergency,

:00:29.:00:30.

our political editor, Tim Donovan,

:00:31.:00:34.

Why didn't help kick in immediately for those who survived,

:00:35.:00:40.

It took 48 hours for the council, Kensington and Chelsea,

:00:41.:00:45.

The former civil servant who helped set up London's emergency response

:00:46.:00:53.

procedures says they are exemplary on paper - it was the system

:00:54.:00:56.

of triggering them which was the problem.

:00:57.:00:59.

I think there will have to be a better system in place,

:01:00.:01:01.

one where central government might have to intervene early on,

:01:02.:01:04.

and other boroughs are allowed to intervene early on,

:01:05.:01:06.

to ask very serious questions, say, "Do you want our help?"

:01:07.:01:09.

you should throw the resources at it early and get ahead of it.

:01:10.:01:14.

By the time you have failed to do that, it is too late.

:01:15.:01:18.

But financial help and re-housing plans are now moving forward.

:01:19.:01:22.

Quite rightly, one of the things we'll have to look at is maybe

:01:23.:01:26.

it should be the Government triggers this in future, but the Government

:01:27.:01:30.

has now, later in the day, but absolutely now on top of this,

:01:31.:01:33.

and absolutely funding the help to the people that need it,

:01:34.:01:36.

and one of the things I think will also come out of this inquiry

:01:37.:01:40.

is to make sure we look at fire regulations in the future.

:01:41.:01:42.

As tenants in four Camden blocks spent a second night

:01:43.:01:45.

away from their homes, at least half a dozen of London's

:01:46.:01:47.

councils are known to have some cladding problems.

:01:48.:01:49.

And the inspections of the last week have raised other risks too.

:01:50.:01:56.

The cladding issue is being inspected systematically,

:01:57.:02:01.

but we had a fire in my constituency yesterday, in a lower rise

:02:02.:02:04.

building without cladding, and I'm really concerned

:02:05.:02:05.

that the Government needs to step up the inspections

:02:06.:02:07.

and support across blocks that could have wider issues.

:02:08.:02:18.

No-one's quite clear yet what Grenfell Tower

:02:19.:02:19.

is going to lead councils to find across the capital.

:02:20.:02:23.

And as investigations continue across London

:02:24.:02:29.

into cladding around buildings, Tara Welsh has been to Wandsworth,

:02:30.:02:35.

where a high-rise there has failed a test by government inspectors.

:02:36.:02:38.

You can see the Wembley arch, and slightly to the right

:02:39.:02:43.

you can see the building where the fire took place...

:02:44.:02:46.

cladding was put on Jose's building when it was refurbished.

:02:47.:02:52.

It's now been tested and doesn't meet current fire-safety standards.

:02:53.:02:55.

To me, at the moment, I don't feel that worried,

:02:56.:03:00.

because obviously if the fire did come in, the building

:03:01.:03:03.

does meet requirements except the outside, then we just

:03:04.:03:05.

What I'm hoping for is that, by Monday, I will see

:03:06.:03:11.

scaffolding going up, and the council say,

:03:12.:03:13.

The council have told us that in response to the findings,

:03:14.:03:20.

a specialist team from the Fire Brigade have checked

:03:21.:03:22.

things like fire doors, electrical cupboards and dry risers,

:03:23.:03:25.

and they say they found there is no reason for people to move out.

:03:26.:03:37.

Wandsworth Council said this is different to Camden -

:03:38.:03:39.

tower blocks were evacuated there when officers found

:03:40.:03:41.

problems with insulation, gas pipes and fire doors,

:03:42.:03:43.

Here, the council says it's been confirmed there

:03:44.:03:47.

is no undue risk to residents, but the cladding will be removed

:03:48.:03:50.

as soon as possible, and fire marshals will be stationed here.

:03:51.:03:54.

I find it quite awful, actually, because there's a lot of old people

:03:55.:03:57.

that live in the block, single mums with children, you know,

:03:58.:04:00.

and despite devastating, actually, to think all this time we've been

:04:01.:04:02.

I think that the concern for vulnerable people,

:04:03.:04:06.

those trying to get down a single staircase in a panic situation,

:04:07.:04:09.

is going to be something quite unnerrving to a lot of people here.

:04:10.:04:13.

But I think there's also a certain calmness the council put in place,

:04:14.:04:16.

elements of due diligence, fire watch et cetera

:04:17.:04:18.

Cladding on blocks from seven London boroughs have now failed

:04:19.:04:27.

government tests as consequences of the Grenfell Tower

:04:28.:04:29.

Hundreds of thousands of Londoners have been celebrating the Muslim

:04:30.:04:37.

festival of Eid al-Fitr, with the Ministry of Defence

:04:38.:04:39.

allowing Muslims in southeast London to gather at the army barracks

:04:40.:04:44.

in Woolwich for a day of celebration and prayers.

:04:45.:04:47.

Thousands of people turned up, and a sermon was delivered

:04:48.:04:51.

about the importance of peace, love and charity to all.

:04:52.:04:54.

Prayers were also said for the victims of the Grenfell Tower

:04:55.:04:57.

fire and the terrorist attacks on London Bridge and Finsbury Park.

:04:58.:05:03.

And I'll be discussing some aspects of Eid with Sonny and Shay

:05:04.:05:06.

on BBC Radio London in around ten minutes' time.

:05:07.:05:08.

But now, let's get the weather forecast from Elizabeth.

:05:09.:05:12.

Following the intense weather earlier on in the week,

:05:13.:05:16.

we're now back to bog-standard British summertime.

:05:17.:05:18.

A cooler night tonight, this is how we'll start

:05:19.:05:21.

off the day tomorrow, with plenty of sunshine,

:05:22.:05:23.

a lovely day, and it'll feel pleasantly warm in the sun

:05:24.:05:25.

A bit of fair-weather cloud here and there

:05:26.:05:28.

through the afternoon, very light wind, top temperatures

:05:29.:05:30.

But it's all change on Tuesday, we'll see some wet weather

:05:31.:05:34.

in the form of heavy, thundery downpours, more prolonged

:05:35.:05:37.

spells of rain as we head through an unsettled week.

:05:38.:05:41.

That's it. I'll be back later with a news update at 10:20.

:05:42.:05:44.

Hope you can join me then. Bye for now.

:05:45.:06:09.

Good evening. We will start with a look at the big picture, which sees

:06:10.:06:15.

one area of low pressure jetting away towards Scandinavia, winds

:06:16.:06:18.

falling

:06:19.:06:19.
