A special mass has been held at Southwark Cathedral to honour

the victims of the terror attacks in Barcelona and at the seaside

resort of Cambrils.

In his sermon, the Dean of Southwark, the Very

Reverend Andrew Nunn, addressed the differences

and apparent similarities between the terror attacks

which happened on his doorstep in Borough and in Barcelona.

A hymn to remember those caught up in the Barcelona attack.

The Dean himself was on holiday there a week ago.

Addressing the congregation, he spoke of the prejudices

which drive division and how a spirit of unity can overcome evil.

The wounds that are there, that have been created within communities,

will take a long time to heal.

Because I think people lose confidence in the values that we

have had and we mustn't do that.

People feel, can I go to this place or that place?

Of course we should.

And the way that terrorism will win is for us to give into it.

Listening today was Amir, himself caught up in

the London Bridge attack in June.

His message to the people of Barcelona - now, more than ever,

is the time for community cohesion.

In the aftermath of attacks, there is always this backlash

of people feeling upset and annoyed about what has happened.

But if that sense of strong community is there and is promoted,

then anything we can overcome.

We can always overcome the negative.

Today's message of hope struck a chord with the congregation.

I found it very moving, actually.

It made me think back to June and it made me think back to the experience

we had on our doorstep.

And made us feel very close and connected

to the people of Barcelona.

The service closed with a commemoration

of the Marchioness disaster, the pleasure boat which sank 28

years ago today on the Thames.

51 people were killed.

The Dean explaining that, like the victims of recent terror

attacks, those who perished were from varied and different

backgrounds and were simply out having fun.

A train at Paddington partially derailed this morning

as it was leaving the station.

No one was injured on the 11.57 service to Penzance,

although two platforms remain shut while the incident

is being investigated.

It's the third rail accident in a week following a similar

derailment at Waterloo and another train hitting the buffers

at King's Cross.

One of the busiest railways in and out of London has a new owner.

South West Trains ran its last service at midnight and has been

replaced by South Western Railway, who've promised to replace

or refurbish their trains over the next three years.

But as Alice Salfield reports, unions have already planned

a protest for tomorrow.

After 21 years, South West Trains is no more.

In comes a new company operating the franchise.

A rather quiet start this morning, with a mixed

reception from passengers.

For me, I haven't had any problems with them.

I tend to commute before the rush-hour so at that time

of the morning it has not been a problem.

Have you noticed any difference today?

Not at all.

No.

They're still late coming in!

But it is not the ideal time for South Western Railway

to be taking over.

Works to increase capacity at Waterloo mean 14 of the platforms

will be closed during the first week of the new service.

And customers are already being advised to make

alternative arrangements.

We have got just over a week of those works still to do but we're

really looking forward, beyond those works, to kicking off

and delivering the ?1.2 billion of investment that we have committed

over our seven-year franchise.

There's a promise of faster journeys from Reading and 90

new trains to be introduced.

But they are designed for the driver to operate the doors and the RMT

union says the company is refusing to guarantee a second

member of staff on board.

South Western Railway says it does plan to but wants to discuss

the role of guards with its staff.

It has led to the RMT planning a protest outside

the station tomorrow morning.

And although most trains haven't been rebranded

with the new name yet, they have managed to

change the water bottles.

A quick look at tomorrow's weather now and it'll stay dry and rather

cloudy with occasional warm sunny spells in the afternoon.
