That's it for now,
we're back at ten. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
Goodbye. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:11
Welcome to BBC London News. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
I'm Victoria Hollins. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
A memorial service has been held
at King's Cross station to mark | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
exactly 30 years since the fire that
killed 31 people. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
Dozens were also injured
in the blaze, which was started | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
by a single match discarded
on a wooden escalator. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
Here's Emma North. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:34
We are gathered here today
to remember all those | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
involved in the fire
here at King's Cross Underground | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
station 30 years ago. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
This morning they came together,
families, friends and colleagues, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
linked by the worst fire
in the history of the | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
London Underground. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
We remember especially the 31 people
who lost their lives, | 0:00:49 | 0:00:59
and the many more who were
injured on that night. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
The minute's silence was broken only
by the sound of the trains below. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
Then, one by one, they paid tribute. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
I've never seen some
of the people before but I feel | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
like they're my family. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:16
I felt the same... | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Feelings again, like I am
again a 13-year-old girl, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:24
and I was again told
that your brother is no more, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
I'm again told that he's dead
and mum's crying and I'm crying, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
and that feeling came back
after many, many years. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
This may be one of the capital's
busiest stations but Londoners still | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
don't forget what happened here. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Every day, it's up to 200,000
people that pass through. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
And a number of people do stop. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
People stay and lay flowers. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
On Thursday, there was a man that
passed and he stopped, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:51
he read the plaque,
and he held his hand on the plaque. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
The King's Cross fire changed both
the way the underground | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
and the fire service work. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
If we think back to what we were
wearing to fight fires back then, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:03
it was no different to what we wore
to fight fires in the Blitz. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
We had yellow, plastic leggings that
softened and almost melted | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
when they got too warm. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
Plastic... | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
Plastic and rubber gloves,
no different to the gardening | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
gloves you can go and buy
at your local garden centre. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
Time has passed but today the
memories are as powerful as ever. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:25
It was a massive fundraising effort
in London last night - | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
a total of £7 million raised
for Children in Need, more | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
than anywhere else in the country. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
BBC London spent the evening
with fundraisers at | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
the Harry Potter Experience
at Warner Brothers Studios | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
in Hertfordshire. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:36
And Sarah Harris was there. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:42
Everyone knows you need special
powers to get into Harry Potter's | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
world but for Pudsey,
dozens of fundraisers | 0:02:45 | 0:02:51
and disadvantaged children,
it was a piece of cake. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
Many were there to explain why
and how they've raised so much money | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
for such a good cause. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:58
Maisie. | 0:02:58 | 0:02:59
India. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:00
Ellie. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
I was a poorly girl
when I was younger but I got | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
better as I got older,
and I want children | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
to be as lucky as me. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
So Children In Need could help that. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:14
At school, all of my friends
and everyone at school, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
we wore spotty clothes. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
This year, it was my idea
to bring in old pound coins. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
We raised... | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
ALL: £2,800! | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
Behind the scenes at
Warner Brothers Studios tour, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
Children In Need got to share
in some magical movie history. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
Children from Watford mencap joined
in the party spirit. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
Without Children In Need backing,
their project wouldn't exist. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:46
It means a lot, even
for the parents because, | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
unlike every other child who goes
around people's houses | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
for tea, these kids don't. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:52
They don't really have
a social life as such. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
We are their social
life after school. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
The Christmas scene
is already set at Hogwarts. | 0:03:57 | 0:03:59
For young carers, a chance to enjoy
themselves away from so many | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
family responsibilities. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
Another project that relies
on your generous donations. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:09
When they have the funding,
it helps when, like, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
we are in bad places and we want to,
like, meet up with different young | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
carers and just talk about that,
so it's really nice that they could | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
help along the way with that. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
A night to remember and a message
to all of you in and around | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
the capital who gave to help
the lives of Children In Need. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
Wingardium Leviosa. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
Thank you. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:41
A look at the weather. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
Tonight, cloud will thin this
evening allowing long | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
clear periods to develop. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46
Tomorrow will see a cold start
but the morning will be fine, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
sunny and dry with light winds. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
During the afternoon cloud
will thicken from the west | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
with patchy rain later. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
Maximum temperature,
nine degrees Celsius. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
That's it. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:58
We're back tomorrow evening. | 0:04:58 | 0:04:59
From all of us here,
do have a lovely weekend. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
Bye for now. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06 |
