There's more throughout the evening
on the BBC News Channel, | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
for the news where you are. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:03
Goodbye. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
Good evening from BBC London News. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:13
I'm Victoria Hollins. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
A woman stabbed to death in her home
during what appears to be a botched | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
burglary has been named locally
as Cathy Burke. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
The 55-year-old lived
alone in Muswell Hill. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
One neighbour has described
her as "a lovely lady", | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
as Marc Ashdown reports. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
Described by friends as "larger
than life with a heart to match". | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
It's thought Cathy Burke was tied up
before being stabbed to death. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
All day long, the flowers have been
mounting up in this quiet | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
residential corner of Muswell Hill,
now the crime scene | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
of a brutal murder. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
Fennelle was friends
with Miss Burke for ten years. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
She was fun. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
She had, you know, the Irish,
quite jokey, laughy. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
She liked to have a drink sometimes,
have a little dance. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
She was always making me laugh. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:58
She used to have a
little dance about. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
Very friendly, very warm and giving. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Very giving lady. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
Pretty sad, then. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
I'm devastated. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
I absolutely feel sick to my
stomach, but she's not here no more. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
It was neighbours who
first raised the alarm. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
A number have told me they used
to see her walking her dog up | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
and down here every day,
and when she didn't appear one day, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
and knowing she wasn't very well,
they got concerned. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
It was neighbours, in fact,
who put this ladder up | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
to try and investigate,
and when they couldn't find | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
anything, they called police. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
They arrived, and found
her body inside. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
Detectives are keeping an open mind,
but at this early stage, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
it appears she was a victim
of a failed burglary, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
although there were no
signs of a forced entry. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
Such a lovely person. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
A real character. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
She was so funny. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
And I just can't believe this
has happened to her. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
For such a lovely woman. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
It's a quiet area. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
Looks like a nice area. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
This is one of the quietest streets
you will get in this area. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
It's a lovely, quiet street,
so everybody is in total shock, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
and everybody is a bit
nervous as well. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
Police are expected to make a formal
identification tomorrow. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
No arrests have been made. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
They are still appealing for any
witnesses to come forward. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
Mark Ashdown, BBC London News. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:11
A student who was jailed
in the United Arab Emirates on drugs | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
charges has been freed
after a three-year | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
campaign for his release. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
Ahmad Zeidan - who was
studying in Dubai - | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
was arrested along with several
other young men, when cocaine | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
with a street value of three pounds
was found in their car. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
The 22-year-old from Reading says
he was forced to sign a confession | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
after being tortured -
claims denied by authorities there. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
His father Manal said his son was
freed after a £4,000 fine was paid. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
Hundreds of Coptic Christians have
gathered in Hertfordshire | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
for a special event to mark
a new chapter in the | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
life of their church. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
The religion has its roots
in Egypt where today | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
members face persecution. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
But here in London its community
is growing, with around | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
20,000 members. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:51
This weekend saw the first ever
Bishop for London enthroned | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
with a special celebration mass,
as Thomas Magill reports. | 0:02:54 | 0:03:03
Making history at the enthronement
of the first Coptic | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
Christian Bishop of London. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:10
London is a great city. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:13
I've been here for 22 years, and I'm
really excited to be able to | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
serve it in a new capacity. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
Bishop Angaelos is no stranger
to London, and having led | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
the Copts here since 1999. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:30
And now he says the creation
of a new diocese will help him | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
unite its seven parishes
and make their growing | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
congregation stronger. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:36
Like many parishes anywhere
in the world, they become islands. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
When they are bound
together as a diocese, | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
they have a unified identity,
and that allows them | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
to bring their own strengths,
but also complement | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
each other's weaknesses. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
Well, there was no doubt this
was a joyful celebration to mark | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
a new chapter in the life
of Coptic Christians in London | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
and the surrounding area,
but it was also a chance | 0:03:54 | 0:04:00
for the bishop to meet the people
he'll now serve as their leader | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
in the church's newest diocese. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
St George's Cathedral in Stevenage
was full for the celebration, | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
with worshippers happy
about what the appointment means | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
for the future of their church. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
He has this drive in this ambition,
knows how to draw young | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
people to the church
and keep them enthusiastic. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
It's a good start, a very, very good
start, and something to look forward | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
to for the next generation. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
And all this a far cry from life
for Coptic Christians | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
in the Middle East, who face
persecution, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
discrimination and death. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
Dozens have been killed this year
after Coptic Christian churches | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
and homes were bombed by suspected
IS militants in Egypt. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
Bishop Angaelos says there's
challenges for Christians | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
in the West too, and now
the celebrations are over, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
he's looking forward
to getting on with the job. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:59
And now a look at the weather
with Sara Thornton. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
It was a beautiful day today after a
frosty start this morning, but | 0:05:12 | 0:05:17
changes on its way. Initially,
pretty chilly this evening after | 0:05:17 | 0:05:22
clear skies, then cloud pushes in
from the west, and a very different | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
feel setting in for the coming days.
Temperatures initially close to | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
freezing but lifting through the
night. A lot of cloud, but generally | 0:05:30 | 0:05:35
drive. Just a bit of drizzle in the
afternoon. South-westerly winds | 0:05:35 | 0:05:41
making a difference to temperatures
compared to today's highs. Perhaps | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
milder still for the middle part of
the week. Often cloudy, some | 0:05:45 | 0:05:59 |
