Welcome to BBC London News,
I'm Victoria Hollins. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
A woman stabbed to death in her home
during what appears to be a botched | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
burglary has been named locally
as Cathy Burke. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
The 55-year-old lived
alone in Muswell Hill. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
Neighbours have described
her as "a lovely lady", | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
as Marc Ashdown reports. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
Described by friends as "larger
than life with a heart to match". | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
It's thought Cathy Burke was tied up
before being stabbed to death. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
All day long, the flowers have been
mounting up in this quiet | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
residential corner of Muswell Hill,
now the crime scene | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
of a brutal murder. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
Fennelle was friends
with Miss Burke for ten years. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
She was fun. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
She had, you know, the Irish,
quite jokey, laughy. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
She liked to have a drink sometimes,
have a little dance. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
She was always making me laugh. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
She used to have a
little dance about. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
Very friendly, very warm and giving. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
Very giving lady. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
So pretty sad, then. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
I'm devastated. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
I absolutely feel sick to my
stomach, but she's not here no more. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:12
It was neighbours who
first raised the alarm. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
A number have told me they used
to see her walking her dog up | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
and down here every day,
and when she didn't appear one day, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
and knowing she wasn't very well,
they got concerned. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
It was neighbours, in fact,
who put this ladder up | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
to try and investigate,
and when they couldn't find | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
anything, they called police. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
They arrived, and found
her body inside. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
Detectives are keeping an open mind,
but at this early stage, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
it appears she was a victim
of a failed burglary, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
although there were no
signs of a forced entry. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
Such a lovely person. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
A real character. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
She was so funny. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
And I just can't believe this
has happened to her. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
For such a lovely woman. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
It's a quiet area. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
Looks like a nice area. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:50
This is one of the quietest streets
you'll get in this area. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
It's a lovely, quiet street,
so everybody is in total shock, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
and everybody is a bit
nervous as well. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
Police are expected to make a formal
identification tomorrow. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
No arrests have been made. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
They are still appealing for any
witnesses to come forward. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
Mark Ashdown, BBC London News. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
A student who was jailed
in the United Arab Emirates on drugs | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
charges has been freed
after a three-year | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
campaign for his release. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
Ahmad Zeidan - who was
studying in Dubai - | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
was arrested along with several
other young men, when a small amount | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
of cocaine was found in their car. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
The 22-year-old from Reading says
he was forced to sign a confession | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
after being tortured -
claims denied by authorities there. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
His father Manal said his son was
freed after a £4,000 fine was paid. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
Hundreds of Coptic Christians have
gathered in Hertfordshire | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
for a special event to mark
a new chapter in the | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
life of their church. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
The religion has its roots
in Egypt, where today, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
members face persecution. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
But here in London,
its community is growing. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
Thomas Magill reports. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:50
Making history at the enthronement
of the first Coptic | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
Christian Bishop of London. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:58
Bishop Angaelos is no stranger
to London, having led | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
the Copts here since 1999. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
And now he says the creation
of a new diocese will help him | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
unite its seven parishes
and make their growing | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
congregation stronger. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
Like many parishes anywhere
in the world, they become islands. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
When they're bound together
as a diocese they have a unified | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
identity, and that allows them
to bring their own strengths, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
but also compensate each
other's weaknesses. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:27
St George's Cathedral in Stevenage
was full for the celebration, | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
with worshippers happy
about what the appointment means | 0:03:30 | 0:03:31
for the future of their church. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:37
He has this drive and this ambition,
knows how to draw young | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
people to the church. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
It's something to look forward
to for the next generation. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
And all this a far cry from life
for Coptic Christians | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
in the Middle East. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
Dozens have been killed this year
after Coptic Christian churches | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
and homes were bombed by suspected
IS militants in Egypt. | 0:03:54 | 0:04:00
Bishop Angaelos says there's
challenges for Christians | 0:04:00 | 0:04:01
in the West too, and now
the celebrations are over, | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
he's looking forward
to getting on with the job. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:13
And now a look at the weather,
with Sara Thornton. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:18
Good evening. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:19
It's been a pretty chilly
evening across London, | 0:04:19 | 0:04:21
temperatures down close
to freezing under clear skies, | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
but change on the way at the moment. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
We've got some cloud pushing towards
us from the west through the night, | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
bits and pieces of rain first thing
and temperatures rising | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
all the while as the
south-westerly wind sets in. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
Maybe a bit of drizzle
in the afternoon, fairly cloudy, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
certainly feeling very
different than today, | 0:04:35 | 0:04:36
highs of 13 degrees. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:37
Today, we saw just seven
and eight Celsius. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
And milder still for the middle part
of the week, perhaps the mid-teens. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
Often dry, often
cloudy, and windy too. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
That's it. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:45
We're back with breakfast
bulletins tomorrow morning. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
From all of us here, good night. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:49 |
