There's more throughout the evening
on the BBC News Channel, | 0:00:00 | 0:00:02
we are back with the late news. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
Now on BBC One, it's time
for the news where you are. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
Goodbye. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
Good evening, I'm Assad Ahmad.
Residents in east London are being | 0:00:15 | 0:00:20
encouraged to contact the Home
Secretary to complain about cuts to | 0:00:20 | 0:00:24
policing. Hackney Council has put up
posters which ask people to make a | 0:00:24 | 0:00:29
stand against rising crime in the
borough, blaming it on there being | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
fewer police officers. Here is
Caroline Davies. Deborah has been | 0:00:33 | 0:00:39
serving Hackney's hungry for 20
years. This year there was a break | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
in. So they climb over, came through
the window. As you can see, now | 0:00:42 | 0:00:47
we've put a grill on it. They took
over £1000. We need more police | 0:00:47 | 0:00:53
here. When you can see them you feel
more safe. Money for the police is a | 0:00:53 | 0:00:58
divisive topic. After five years of
cuts in 2015, the government | 0:00:58 | 0:01:03
announced police budgets would go up
with inflation. But the Met police | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
and city hall say it's not enough.
So how do you get more money for | 0:01:06 | 0:01:11
policing? This is one council's
ounce, they are asking you to ask | 0:01:11 | 0:01:16
the Home Secretary. We are really
feeling the bite in London and | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
Hackney, we've lost one in four
police officers, that's less police | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
officers to help keep the people of
Hackney say. Do you genuinely think | 0:01:22 | 0:01:27
people will write to the Home
Office? I know they have, it's | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
something residents feel strongly
about and are keen to make those | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
concerns heard. Does Deborah think
she will write? Not really. I do | 0:01:33 | 0:01:40
think... Don't think it's going to
get any better. We've been writing, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:46
people have been campaigning,
complaining. There's nothing | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
happening. The Home Office told us
there are more police officers in | 0:01:49 | 0:01:55
London than anywhere else in the
country and that £11.9 billion of | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
taxes was invested in policing this
year. Nevertheless, Hackney Council | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
feel they need to pressure the
government to any avenue to push | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
their funding up. Caroline Davies,
BBC London News. Officers are | 0:02:07 | 0:02:13
investigating a kidnapping south
London where a man wearing a Rolex | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
watch was held at knife-point for
more than two days this week. The | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
24-year-old victim was lured into a
house in Croydon where he was | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
stripped naked, beaten and tied up.
His keys were taken by the gang who | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
then burgled his parents house in
Sydney south-east London. The entry | 0:02:28 | 0:02:33
of the suspects into the home of the
victim's parents was captured on | 0:02:33 | 0:02:38
CCTV. Detectives say the victim has
been left utterly distraught and | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
traumatised. Metropolitan Police
horses are being shown off at the | 0:02:40 | 0:02:47
halls of the year show in Olympia
this week. But when it comes to | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
their day job of patrolling the
streets of London there is a lot of | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
training involved. Mike Bushell to
see how they prepare. | 0:02:54 | 0:03:00
They are the heavyweights of the
question world with some of the | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
bravest riders. Despite the size and
weight of these beasts, it's all | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
about the most delicate position. As
they jump through fire and manage to | 0:03:07 | 0:03:13
remove some of their uniform while
jumping, and the saddle and | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
stirrups. This isn't about
showcasing skills at Olympia this | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
week. The mounted police use this
training to help them prepare for | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
their main job. Whatever they may
face on the streets of London. We | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
are cops on horses, police officers
on horses. They are all professional | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
horses, they patrolled the streets
of London daily. This ride we do, | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
what you've seen today, it's all
about training. In a public order | 0:03:36 | 0:03:41
situation like riot of football
crowd they say one mounted officer | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
can do the job of ten on foot. Six
times more likely to chat to a | 0:03:45 | 0:03:50
police officer on horse than if they
are on foot. It's all to do with the | 0:03:50 | 0:03:55
horse, nothing personal about PC
Dobson. You are a lot more | 0:03:55 | 0:03:57
approachable on a horse, I find the
different initially when I joined | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
the mounted branch, I couldn't
believe how many people stopped and | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
want to speak to you. If we go to an
estate, you guarantee we'll have a | 0:04:03 | 0:04:11
crowd around us purely to pat the
horse. This is where it begins. The | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
policeman who joined the mounted
force have never been on a horse | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
before, they start this training. 16
weeks later the trust between horse | 0:04:18 | 0:04:23
and rider is such that eventually
they will even run through walls | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
together. Mike Bushell. The
country's first ever Muslim | 0:04:26 | 0:04:32
pantomime arrives in Stratford next
week and it's already sold out. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
Of course it has all the usual line
as well as songs, all delivered by | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
Muslim characters. You can see the
full story on our website. Well | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
worth taking a look. For now, let's
take a look at the weather forecast. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51
Tomorrow will be cold and wet with a
chance of snow in north London and | 0:04:51 | 0:04:56
Hertfordshire. Top temperature of
seven Celsius. The four weather | 0:04:56 | 0:05:00
forecast follows. For now, from all
of us here, have a very good | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
evening. Goodbye. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05 |
