between Ronnie O'Sullivan and Shaun
Murphy. There is more throughout | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
evening on the BBC News channel and
I will be back with the late news at | 0:00:00 | 0:00:02
ten p:m.. Now it is time for the
news where you are. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
As you've been hearing,
overnight snow has caused widespread | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
travel disruption particularly
at our airports and on the roads. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:22
The extent of it, which
covered most of London | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
and the Home Counties,
caught many by surprise | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
with snow fall being heaviest
in Hertfordshire and north London. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
But as always, there
were children who welcomed it. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:37
There weren't many places,
in particular north of the river, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:47
that didn't wake up to scenes
similar to this one in new Barnet. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
And it didn't take long
for the fund to begin. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
And it didn't take long
for the fun to begin. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
But when there's snow,
there's disruption. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
The M25 motorway came to a complete
standstill and in Hertfordshire, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
drivers had enough as they waited
to join junction eight on the M1, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
unaware that their journey
was likely to take hours. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:08
This was Potters Bar,
the driving make that much | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
harder on the motorway
because of ungritted roads. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:16
North London too, moved slowly,
if at all, for the same reason. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:21
No preparation in the form of grit. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
One of my friends was stuck
in the car for four hours | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
because of the snow. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:29
Flight was delayed to Aberdeen. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
So an extra night in London. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
Luton airport had flights
temporarily suspended, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
causing long delays
and frustration for passengers. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
One described it as chaos. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
And there were further problems
at Heathrow, with snowploughs | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
clearing the runways. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
While, on one of the planes,
was stranded passenger on a BA | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
flight from Seattle,
who took these pictures three | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
hours after landing. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
The London underground
had its share of delays with snow | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
causing power problems. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:02
But most of the network ploughed on,
much to the relief of passengers. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
Londoners south of the river
were affected as well. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
This was south-east London this
afternoon where sleet had started | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
to turn snow to mush with a warning
tonight to be aware | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
of widespread ice. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
And you can keep up with all
the latest travel news | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
on BBC Radio London,
tonight and tomorrow | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
morning, as well as on our
Twitter feed and website. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
And we'll have the weather forecast
for you, in a moment. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
Victims of abuse at children's homes
in Lambeth are to receive | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
compensation from a £100 million
fund set up by the council. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
It will include former residents of
the 'Shirley Oaks Children's Home' | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
near Croydon and money will also be
paid to adults who have never | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
claimed they were abused. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:50
Here's Ayshea Buksh. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:56
It was supposed to be a sanctuary.
But the decades, Shirley Oaks | 0:02:56 | 0:03:01
children's home in Croydon was the
centre of an abuse network. The home | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
was run by Lambeth Council, who have
created a compensation scheme. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:11
Anyone who lived in a children's
home run by the borough can apply. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:16
It's thought thousands could be
eligible. We act on our pledge to | 0:03:16 | 0:03:22
provide redress for people who have
been waiting too long. As well as | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
providing compensation, the scheme
brings forward specialised | 0:03:25 | 0:03:29
counselling for people, as well as a
formal written apology from myself | 0:03:29 | 0:03:35
on behalf of previous
administrations. But Raymond | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
Stevenson, who lived at the home
remains distrustful of the council. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
He believes such a scheme should be
administered away from Lambeth. An | 0:03:43 | 0:03:51
important reader scheme is an
independent panel. So for this | 0:03:51 | 0:03:57
council to manufacture an
independent redress scheme which has | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
no independence is very dark and
very offensive to our members. It is | 0:04:01 | 0:04:06
incredibly hard for some warm who
has been so badly down by Lambeth | 0:04:06 | 0:04:12
Council in the past. We have worked
very hard on this scheme, which is | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
the first of its kind in the
country. Members don't want to | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
present evidence to the same people
who are abused us. It is an insult. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
This counsel doesn't want any third
parties looking at the information | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
we have gathered and judging the
cases we represent. The survivors, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:34
such compensation is a significant
milestone, but their fight for | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
justice and in-depth scrutiny of the
past will continue. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
So now back to the weather
and the extent of it | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
caught many by surprise. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46
So let's get the latest forecast. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:47
Hello, good evening. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:49
Plenty of snowy scenes around today
and they'll still be a lit | 0:04:49 | 0:04:56
Plenty of snowy scenes around today
and there'll still be a lit | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
of snowfall overnight tonight. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:00
Mostly nuisance value,
very light and patchy. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:01
Most places dry. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:02
A few isolated patches of freezing
fog perhaps here and there, | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
but ice is going to be the major
hazard into tomorrow morning, | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
as everything re-freezes
onto the roads and pavements | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
and watch out for untreated
surfaces in particular. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
We've got a Met Office weather
warning out for that. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
So watch out for the ice
tomorrow morning. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
Mostly dry, early start but then
through the early morning rush see | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
another area of rain just pushing
in from the south. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
It will be windy, there could be
some sleet and some snow the mix, | 0:05:21 | 0:05:25
particularly over the higher ground. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:26
Nothing like the scale
we sought today. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:28
Still feeling very
chilly, that rain. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
Possibly the sleet and snow isolated
to eastern areas as we head | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
through the afternoon and then that
system will pull its weight used | 0:05:33 | 0:05:43
with as we head to the late
afternoon and into the evening. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
And very cold night on Monday. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:49
Sunspots could get as low
as minus six Celsius. | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
Tuesday, dry. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:52
Still cold with some sunshine. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:53
That's it. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
I'll be back at 10.20 on BBC One. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
Bye for now. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:03 |
