I was just sitting on the sofa
and I heard a couple of bangs | 0:00:45 | 0:00:49
and I thought maybe it was cars. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
Obviously, they do come speeding
around this corner sometimes. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
And then I started hearing sirens. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:56
I looked out and I saw police
running here and there, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
and everyone was just gathering. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
You only live a couple of doors
down with your family. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
It is scary to think
that I could have been | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
in there at that time. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:08
He could have been in there. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
He could have been in the buggy
in there and it could have | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
been totally different. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
It was in this chicken shop
where the shooting took place. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18

in a stable condition

Gun crime is a growing
problem in the capital. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:32

incidents involving guns. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36

New Year's Eve travel
to and from London Waterloo | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
is set to be disrupted
because of fresh rail strikes. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
Members of the RMT union
on South Western Railway | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
and Cross Country will walk out
for 24 hours tomorrow, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
causing delays and cancellations. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
The strikes are part of the long
running dispute over the role | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
of guards on trains. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12

Police are warning drivers not
to leave valuables inside their cars | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
over new year after a spate
of so-called "key jammer" | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
thefts in North London. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
It's thought car thieves
are using technology to block | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
central locking systems,
making it easier to steal from them. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
Charlotte Franks reports. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:49
This woman has aways been conscious
of security when locking her car, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
so she was shocked to come back one
day and find her door locked | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
and her glove box rifled through. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
I was going to go out but I found
everything all over the place. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
I didn't know what to think. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:03
I even accused my daughter of going
into my car while I was away. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
I puzzled over whether I
had left it unlocked. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
Just around the corner the same
thing happened to Andrew. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
I came back at 11.30 at night
and was surprised to discover | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
that the sliding door
on the passenger side was open | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
on the pavement side. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:27
The person who got in there was able
to look into the rear | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
cavity of the hatchback. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:33
Both of them were victims
of so-called key jamming. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
It's when criminals use a device
to block a car's electronic signal | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
to stop it from locking. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
Over the last 12 months there's been
a spate of key jamming incidents | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
in Highbury with 47 reports. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
In London last year there
were almost 54,000 thefts from cars, | 0:03:49 | 0:03:54
an 8% rise on the year before,
and almost 2000 of those | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
were here in Islington. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
But despite this increase the Met
Police detection rate has dropped. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
Some of it is down to resourcing
and some of it is down to the fact | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
there aren't as many opportunities
for us to investigate the crime. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:18
With the crime often committed
on residential roads there is less | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
CCTV and people are wearing gloves
so there are less | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
forensics opportunities
for us to follow up on. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
Police say they are now working
with car manufacturers to try | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
and develop technology to prevent
key jamming, but for now the only | 0:04:29 | 0:04:31
way to stop yourself becoming
a victim is to manually check | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
after you lock up. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:35
Charlotte Franks, BBC London News. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
More than a thousand people
have been recognised | 0:04:38 | 0:04:39
in the New Year Honours List. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:44
They include BBC Radio London's
Eddie Nestor who received an MBE | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
for services to radio and charity. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:48
The broadcaster, actor and comedian
has presented Drivetime | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
on our radio station since 2003. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
London's weather. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:53
It'll be a wet and windy start
tomorrow, with some heavy rain. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
This will soon clear leaving sunny
spells and then further showers. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
A top temperature of
12 degrees Celsius. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
That's it from the Saturday team. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
Have a very good evening. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:08 |
