I'm Chris Rogers.

A gunman has opened fire on a fast

food restaurant in Plaistow,

injuring two 16-year-old boys.

The shooting happened

on Terrace Road yesterday evening.

Frankie McCamley reports.

Just after 8.30pm last night police

closed off part of the high

street in East London.

Caught on camera by onlookers,

people gather as one of the victims

is taken away by ambulance crews.

Amy saw the scenes unfold.

I was just sitting on the sofa

and I heard a couple of bangs

and I thought maybe it was cars.

Obviously, they do come speeding

around this corner sometimes.

And then I started hearing sirens.

I looked out and I saw police

running here and there,

and everyone was just gathering.

You only live a couple of doors

down with your family.

It is scary to think

that I could have been

in there at that time.

He could have been in there.

He could have been in the buggy

in there and it could have

been totally different.

It was in this chicken shop

where the shooting took place.

Two 16-year-old boys were shot,

one in the back and one in the leg.

They were both taken

to hospital and are said to be

in a stable condition

with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gun crime is a growing

problem in the capital.

In 2015-2016 there were nearly 1800

incidents involving guns.

The following year there

were just over 2500.

An increase of 42%.

The investigation is being led by

the Met's Trident gang crime unit.

So far, no arrests have been made.

New Year's Eve travel

to and from London Waterloo

is set to be disrupted

because of fresh rail strikes.

Members of the RMT union

on South Western Railway

and Cross Country will walk out

for 24 hours tomorrow,

causing delays and cancellations.

The strikes are part of the long

running dispute over the role

of guards on trains.

A man from East London died

when his van crashed close

to the M25 this morning.

The driver, in his 20s,

was killed when his car hit

the central reservation on the A12,

near its junction with the motorway.

Police say he was pronounced

dead at the scene.

Police are warning drivers not

to leave valuables inside their cars

over new year after a spate

of so-called "key jammer"

thefts in North London.

It's thought car thieves

are using technology to block

central locking systems,

making it easier to steal from them.

Charlotte Franks reports.

This woman has aways been conscious

of security when locking her car,

so she was shocked to come back one

day and find her door locked

and her glove box rifled through.

I was going to go out but I found

everything all over the place.

I didn't know what to think.

I even accused my daughter of going

into my car while I was away.

I puzzled over whether I

had left it unlocked.

Just around the corner the same

thing happened to Andrew.

I came back at 11.30 at night

and was surprised to discover

that the sliding door

on the passenger side was open

on the pavement side.

The person who got in there was able

to look into the rear

cavity of the hatchback.

Both of them were victims

of so-called key jamming.

It's when criminals use a device

to block a car's electronic signal

to stop it from locking.

Over the last 12 months there's been

a spate of key jamming incidents

in Highbury with 47 reports.

In London last year there

were almost 54,000 thefts from cars,

an 8% rise on the year before,

and almost 2000 of those

were here in Islington.

But despite this increase the Met

Police detection rate has dropped.

Some of it is down to resourcing

and some of it is down to the fact

there aren't as many opportunities

for us to investigate the crime.

With the crime often committed

on residential roads there is less

CCTV and people are wearing gloves

so there are less

forensics opportunities

for us to follow up on.

Police say they are now working

with car manufacturers to try

and develop technology to prevent

key jamming, but for now the only

way to stop yourself becoming

a victim is to manually check

after you lock up.
