There's more throughout the evening

on the BBC News Channel,

0:00:000:00:02

Now on BBC1 its time

for the news where you are.

0:00:020:00:04

Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad.

0:00:110:00:15

More now on a fire at a residential

care home in Hertfordshire.

0:00:150:00:19

Managers there have promised a "full

and proper investigation" after one

0:00:190:00:22

of its elderly residents died.

0:00:220:00:25

Another person was critically

injured in the blaze

0:00:250:00:28

at the Woodlands View

home in Stevenage.

0:00:280:00:31

Richard Smith reports

from the scene.

0:00:310:00:35

Investigators trying to piece

together why there was an explosion

0:00:350:00:37

and fire at this care home.

0:00:370:00:40

At the time 41 people were inside.

0:00:400:00:44

Seven have been taken

to hospital, one of those,

0:00:440:00:47

a man in his 80s, has since died.

0:00:470:00:49

As visitors arrived today

they were met by police.

0:00:490:00:52

How could it ever happen?

0:00:520:00:55

I can't make out, how

could it have happened?

0:00:550:00:58

I am 91, I should be used to hearing

bad news and bad things,

0:00:580:01:03

but you never get used to it.

0:01:030:01:08

One woman returning to see her

mother described the response

0:01:080:01:11

by the emergency services.

0:01:110:01:13

I could see flashing lights

going past my mum's window.

0:01:130:01:17

It made my children quite upset

to see that something

0:01:170:01:21

was going on within this area,

so I went to see what was going

0:01:210:01:24

on and it was clear to see

that there was an issue,

0:01:240:01:27

but everyone seemed to be on top

and dealing with the situation.

0:01:270:01:30

Many of those inside made their own

way out, a few could not.

0:01:300:01:35

Five residents were rescued

by the Fire Service with a further

0:01:350:01:38

ten lead to safety.

0:01:380:01:42

It does appear that there

was an oxygen cylinder in the room

0:01:420:01:46

where the fire started and that may

well have played a part in the fire.

0:01:460:01:50

There has been a steady stream

of visitors to the home today.

0:01:500:01:53

Some family and friends have not

wanted to go on camera but have

0:01:530:01:57

spoken of a need to see

for themselves that their

0:01:570:02:00

loved ones are safe.

0:02:000:02:02

Some have expressed shock

at what has happened.

0:02:020:02:04

One woman has praised staff

for maintaining a sense of normality

0:02:040:02:07

in other parts of the complex.

0:02:070:02:10

Tonight in a statement the home's

owners say the safety of residents

0:02:100:02:13

is their number one priority

and their deepest sympathies

0:02:130:02:16

are with the family

of the man who died.

0:02:160:02:20

One of London's longest serving

leaders in a council which is among

0:02:250:02:28

London's most rapidly changing

is facing calls to step down

0:02:280:02:31

after over 20 years in charge.

0:02:310:02:35

Sir Robin Wales could soon become

the second senior Labour figure

0:02:350:02:38

to go after Haringey Council

lost its leader on Tuesday.

0:02:380:02:43

And that's all led to some members

voicing concerns about the direction

0:02:430:02:47

the party is going in.

0:02:470:02:51

Just a few weeks ago,

a magazine described Newham

0:02:510:02:54

as a one-party mini-state.

0:02:540:02:57

It was referring to its Labour roots

and the fact that in the past two

0:02:570:03:00

council elections it has won

every single seat.

0:03:000:03:05

Now Sir Robin Wales is backing calls

for open selection which means

0:03:050:03:09

he won't automatically remain

as Mayor if Labour win in May.

0:03:090:03:13

But he and others say his long

record is a proud one.

0:03:130:03:17

If we go back 20 years ago

and we look at education performance

0:03:170:03:20

for example in this borough,

it would be very low,

0:03:200:03:23

it would have been one

of the lowest in the country,

0:03:230:03:25

and that has been transformed.

0:03:250:03:27

But politics within Labour appear

to be turning with a contingent

0:03:270:03:30

of Labour councillors

challenging their leader's

0:03:300:03:32

renomination as Mayor.

0:03:320:03:36

This counciller has served

in Sir Robin's cabinet but he has

0:03:360:03:38

now turned upon him,

blaming what he called...

0:03:380:03:41

The absence of a decent

housing policy.

0:03:410:03:43

We are standing here

in the Carpenters' Estate

0:03:430:03:47

which we started decanting in 2005.

0:03:470:03:50

There are around 389 empty units

here and only last night

0:03:500:03:52

they evicted all the sleepers

from the Stratford Centre and gave

0:03:520:03:56

them community protection orders

to stop them coming back

0:03:560:03:58

while here there are 300 units

they could be sleeping in.

0:03:580:04:01

That is a disgrace.

0:04:010:04:04

It is important to note

that there is no evidence to suggest

0:04:040:04:07

that the increasingly powerful

pro-Corbyn movement momentum

0:04:070:04:12

that the increasingly powerful

pro-Corbyn movement Momentum

0:04:120:04:14

is behind the calls for a new Mayor.

0:04:140:04:17

Council and Labour MPs both say

they just want a fair election.

0:04:170:04:19

I think that at the end

of the day you select

0:04:190:04:22

the best person for the job.

0:04:220:04:24

Robin himself has said let's

have an open selection, let's open

0:04:240:04:26

it up and if he is selected

as a candidate...

0:04:260:04:29

We just want to go out and fight

so we can return a Labour Mayor

0:04:290:04:32

and continue to do good things.

0:04:320:04:35

But the Labour Party know that

if Sir Robin is removed,

0:04:350:04:38

it will inevitably be seen

as another victory for the left

0:04:380:04:41

of the party against Labour's

traditional centre ground.

0:04:410:04:47

It's been a chilly day,

so let's get the weather forecast

0:04:470:04:50

for tonight and the start

of the week.

0:04:500:04:53

for tonight and the start

of the week.

0:04:530:04:55

Good evening.

0:04:550:04:57

We are entering a very cold

spell of weather indeed.

0:04:570:05:00

In fact, tonight we have a Met

Office weather warning

0:05:000:05:02

out for snow and ice,

But not just for tonight,

0:05:020:05:04

but also into tomorrow

morning, including Monday

0:05:040:05:06

morning's rush hour.

0:05:060:05:07

Many places are dry overnight,

but we have got some showers coming

0:05:070:05:10

in from the Thames estuary.

0:05:100:05:11

It is likely to affect mostly

south-eastern areas of the capital

0:05:110:05:14

where we could see a few centimetres

of snow, enough to cause

0:05:140:05:17

travel disruption.

0:05:170:05:18

And those showers are likely

to continue for part

0:05:180:05:20

of the day tomorrow,

possibly pushing a little bit

0:05:200:05:22

further west, but many places

towards the north and the west

0:05:220:05:25

staying mostly dry, just a cold

easterly wind with top

0:05:250:05:28

temperatures just five Celsius,

but it will feel colder than that.

0:05:280:05:30

Staying cold for the rest

of the week, some freezing fog

0:05:300:05:33

maybe on Tuesday morning.

0:05:330:05:41

If you get caught up in any snow

tomorrow morning, send us your

0:05:410:05:44

pictures. The fastest way to get in

touch with us is on Twitter or on

0:05:440:05:50

Facebook.
