Now on BBC One, it's time
for the news where you are. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
Goodnight. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:02
Good evening. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:13
I'm Asad Ahmad. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
Army veterans have gathered
in London, calling for the better | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
treatment of service personnel. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:21
One ex-military Londoner,
who survived a bomb attack - | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
says it's unfair that some
Republican extremists have | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
avoided prosecution -
while members of the Armed Forces | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
are being pursued. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
Here's Sarah Harris. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:34
It was more than three decades ago
that Londoner Steve Sullivan | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
survived the blast of an IRA bomb
in Hyde Park. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
Today standing shoulder to shoulder
with other veterans to ask | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
for the alleged bomber to be
brought to justice. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:50
Four soldiers and seven horses
were killed by a nail bomb | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
as they made their way
to the changing of the guard | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
ceremony in 1982. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
Steve and his horse led the way. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:58
I've never seen anything
like it in my life. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
There was blood everywhere. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
And the fire is one thing
that sticks in my mind. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
I didn't know what to do so I just
got down on one knee and started | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
stroking the horse's head. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
Families and veterans gathered
in Whitehall believe | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
members of the Armed Forces
are being unfairly prosecuted | 0:01:15 | 0:01:22
for killings during the Troubles
where some Republicans remain | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
unpunished. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
Despite the perception
of bias from people here, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
police figures show that in fact
the vast majority of legacy cases | 0:01:28 | 0:01:33
cases they are looking
into were concerning Republicans. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
Some people say the best memorial
is the peace process, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
isn't it time to let it go? | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
That would be great. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
If you drew a line in the sand
so to speak and said, look, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
it's all water under the bridge,
we will forgive and | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
forget, simple as that. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
There are children who don't have
dads now, haven't got mums. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
They need some form of justice. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:59
Proud of their years of service,
many don't want to see anyone | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
jailed, but want some sort
of justice for the friends they lost | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
and protection for those they argue
were just doing their jobs. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:11
Sarah Harris, BBC London News. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
Four years after a former UN
Peacekeeper suffered | 0:02:13 | 0:02:17
a catastrophic stroke -
doctors from the 'National | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
Hospital for Neurology
and Neurosurgery' in London - | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
have spoken of how they
helped Richard Gray - | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
although he lost a section
of his skull. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
Mr Gray from Kent, had his recovery
filmed by his wife, who's | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
a documentary film maker. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:29
Fiona Irving went to meet them. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:37
Now Richard, what you want basically
it's just a trim up, is it? | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
A huge haemorrhage on his brain left
Richard Gray fighting | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
for his life in 2013. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
He underwent an emergency craniotomy
to release the pressure | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
that was building up. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
Often there were moments
when it was very shocking | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
and it was difficult,
but however difficult it was for me | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
I knew it wasn't nearly as difficult
as it was for Richard | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
because getting better
is really hard work. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
Hard work is tough. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
Richard was a UN peacekeeper. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
He started to get some
movement in his arm. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
And we were able to take advantage
of that, and really try and work | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
hard with him on his arm,
getting him to use it | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
to become more independent. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:17
Recovery does not happen
by getting new brain cells, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
recovery happens by reorganising
the surviving parts of the brain. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:26
Four years of hard work and Richard
has made remarkable improvements. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
Surpassing many expectations
that he would ever be able to walk | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
or communicate again. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:38
His speech is still improving
and I think that's another really | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
important thing to point
to, bring across. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
Its four and a half years after his
stroke and he's still improving. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
You're able to improve your speech. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:47
It always comes on. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:48
Years saying you things almost
every day aren't you? | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
Keeping on. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:52
We're going to keep working. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:53
We will, yes, we will. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:54
Absolutely. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:55
We have to. | 0:03:55 | 0:04:05
And you can see 'My Amazing
Brain; Richard's War' - | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
on Horizon on BBC Two at 9
o'clock on Monday. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
Singer Lady Gaga has announced
she's cancelling the last | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
ten dates of the European leg
of her tour - including her gig | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
at London's O2 tomorrow night -
due to ill health. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
She's tweeted that
"she's devastated" - | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
as are her fans who've come from far
and wide to see her here. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:24
Mad at first, because I spent a lot
of money in this trip. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
But after I was thinking,
I mean, she has | 0:04:27 | 0:04:32
fibromyalgia, so it's not her fault. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:35
I have to see her. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
I saved money all of
the year for this. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
I don't blame her, but,
the same way, it hurts so | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
much. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:46 | |
Now the weather. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:47
And it's going to be a cold night -
and watch out for ice in places. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
There's also an a warning
of snow late tomorrow - | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
and into Monday morning. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
That's it. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:55
There's much more on our Facebook
page and Twitter feed. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
I'm back tomorrow. | 0:04:58 | 0:04:59
Have a good night. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:00 |
