Now on BBC One, it's time

for the news where you are.

0:00:000:00:00

Goodnight.

0:00:010:00:02

Good evening.

0:00:120:00:13

I'm Asad Ahmad.

0:00:130:00:15

Army veterans have gathered

in London, calling for the better

0:00:150:00:17

treatment of service personnel.

0:00:170:00:21

One ex-military Londoner,

who survived a bomb attack -

0:00:210:00:23

says it's unfair that some

Republican extremists have

0:00:230:00:25

avoided prosecution -

while members of the Armed Forces

0:00:250:00:27

are being pursued.

0:00:270:00:30

Here's Sarah Harris.

0:00:300:00:34

It was more than three decades ago

that Londoner Steve Sullivan

0:00:340:00:36

survived the blast of an IRA bomb

in Hyde Park.

0:00:360:00:39

Today standing shoulder to shoulder

with other veterans to ask

0:00:390:00:41

for the alleged bomber to be

brought to justice.

0:00:410:00:50

Four soldiers and seven horses

were killed by a nail bomb

0:00:500:00:53

as they made their way

to the changing of the guard

0:00:530:00:55

ceremony in 1982.

0:00:560:00:57

Steve and his horse led the way.

0:00:570:00:58

I've never seen anything

like it in my life.

0:00:580:01:00

There was blood everywhere.

0:01:000:01:01

And the fire is one thing

that sticks in my mind.

0:01:010:01:04

I didn't know what to do so I just

got down on one knee and started

0:01:040:01:08

stroking the horse's head.

0:01:080:01:12

Families and veterans gathered

in Whitehall believe

0:01:120:01:15

members of the Armed Forces

are being unfairly prosecuted

0:01:150:01:22

for killings during the Troubles

where some Republicans remain

0:01:220:01:24

unpunished.

0:01:240:01:25

Despite the perception

of bias from people here,

0:01:250:01:28

police figures show that in fact

the vast majority of legacy cases

0:01:280:01:33

cases they are looking

into were concerning Republicans.

0:01:330:01:36

Some people say the best memorial

is the peace process,

0:01:360:01:38

isn't it time to let it go?

0:01:380:01:40

That would be great.

0:01:400:01:41

If you drew a line in the sand

so to speak and said, look,

0:01:410:01:44

it's all water under the bridge,

we will forgive and

0:01:440:01:46

forget, simple as that.

0:01:460:01:47

There are children who don't have

dads now, haven't got mums.

0:01:470:01:50

They need some form of justice.

0:01:500:01:59

Proud of their years of service,

many don't want to see anyone

0:01:590:02:03

jailed, but want some sort

of justice for the friends they lost

0:02:030:02:06

and protection for those they argue

were just doing their jobs.

0:02:060:02:11

Sarah Harris, BBC London News.

0:02:110:02:13

Four years after a former UN

Peacekeeper suffered

0:02:130:02:17

a catastrophic stroke -

doctors from the 'National

0:02:170:02:18

Hospital for Neurology

and Neurosurgery' in London -

0:02:180:02:20

have spoken of how they

helped Richard Gray -

0:02:200:02:23

although he lost a section

of his skull.

0:02:230:02:25

Mr Gray from Kent, had his recovery

filmed by his wife, who's

0:02:250:02:28

a documentary film maker.

0:02:280:02:29

Fiona Irving went to meet them.

0:02:290:02:37

Now Richard, what you want basically

it's just a trim up, is it?

0:02:370:02:40

A huge haemorrhage on his brain left

Richard Gray fighting

0:02:400:02:42

for his life in 2013.

0:02:420:02:45

He underwent an emergency craniotomy

to release the pressure

0:02:450:02:48

that was building up.

0:02:480:02:52

Often there were moments

when it was very shocking

0:02:520:02:56

and it was difficult,

but however difficult it was for me

0:02:560:02:58

I knew it wasn't nearly as difficult

as it was for Richard

0:02:580:03:01

because getting better

is really hard work.

0:03:010:03:03

Hard work is tough.

0:03:030:03:06

Richard was a UN peacekeeper.

0:03:060:03:08

He started to get some

movement in his arm.

0:03:080:03:10

And we were able to take advantage

of that, and really try and work

0:03:100:03:13

hard with him on his arm,

getting him to use it

0:03:130:03:16

to become more independent.

0:03:160:03:17

Recovery does not happen

by getting new brain cells,

0:03:170:03:19

recovery happens by reorganising

the surviving parts of the brain.

0:03:190:03:26

Four years of hard work and Richard

has made remarkable improvements.

0:03:260:03:28

Surpassing many expectations

that he would ever be able to walk

0:03:280:03:31

or communicate again.

0:03:310:03:38

His speech is still improving

and I think that's another really

0:03:380:03:41

important thing to point

to, bring across.

0:03:410:03:43

Its four and a half years after his

stroke and he's still improving.

0:03:430:03:46

You're able to improve your speech.

0:03:460:03:47

It always comes on.

0:03:470:03:48

Years saying you things almost

every day aren't you?

0:03:480:03:51

Keeping on.

0:03:510:03:52

We're going to keep working.

0:03:520:03:53

We will, yes, we will.

0:03:530:03:54

Absolutely.

0:03:540:03:55

We have to.

0:03:550:04:05

And you can see 'My Amazing

Brain; Richard's War' -

0:04:050:04:07

on Horizon on BBC Two at 9

o'clock on Monday.

0:04:070:04:10

Singer Lady Gaga has announced

she's cancelling the last

0:04:100:04:12

ten dates of the European leg

of her tour - including her gig

0:04:120:04:15

at London's O2 tomorrow night -

due to ill health.

0:04:150:04:18

She's tweeted that

"she's devastated" -

0:04:180:04:20

as are her fans who've come from far

and wide to see her here.

0:04:200:04:24

Mad at first, because I spent a lot

of money in this trip.

0:04:240:04:27

But after I was thinking,

I mean, she has

0:04:270:04:32

fibromyalgia, so it's not her fault.

0:04:320:04:35

I have to see her.

0:04:350:04:38

I saved money all of

the year for this.

0:04:380:04:42

I don't blame her, but,

the same way, it hurts so

0:04:420:04:45

much.

0:04:450:04:46

Now the weather.

0:04:460:04:47

And it's going to be a cold night -

and watch out for ice in places.

0:04:470:04:51

There's also an a warning

of snow late tomorrow -

0:04:510:04:53

and into Monday morning.

0:04:530:04:54

That's it.

0:04:540:04:55

There's much more on our Facebook

page and Twitter feed.

0:04:550:04:58

I'm back tomorrow.

0:04:580:04:59

Have a good night.
