The safety review of

a multi-million pound tower block

renovation in Luton has been

unveiled to residents.

Plans for the Marsh Farm estate

were overhauled following

the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Cladding has undergone

extensive fire testing,

and a new sprinkler system will be

installed in every flat.

Marc Ashdown explains.

The fire at Grenfell Tower has led

to a rethink across London in terms

of high-rise safety.

That focus this weekend came

to Luton as plans for a major

redevelopment of the Marsh Farm

estate were put on display.

It will be a new look with fire

safety at its heart.

I am glad today especially that

I came, because if I had not come

today, I would still have my doubts

over whether they are going to be

safe or not, but being able to ask

questions and get answers to every

single question, my mind is at ease.

This flame burned against the new

fireproof installation for hours.

Residents could also ask

about the new sprinkler system

in every flat and the exterior

cladding, which has

undergone rigorous testing

by the Fire Service.

We simulated the fire breaking out

of a window and then rising up

the outside of the building

with the cladding.

This test was actually

run for 24 minutes.

Now the normal British standard

would be 15 minutes,

but we ran it for 24 minutes,

we extinguished the fire

and the result was that the cladding

was very slightly scorched,

but it was still intact.

And it did not contribute

to the fire at all.

After Grenfell, everyone got

a little bit worried,

but we are going for the top

of the range fittings,

top of the range with everything,

so hopefully people have gone away

from here today nice and happy.

The plans have been

updated since Grenfell.

A concierge will be employed

to help with the upkeep.

There will be a new heating system,

solar panels and LED lighting.

Work on the £23 million

project is due to get

under way in the summer.

A teenager has been stabbed

to death in south London.

Police were called to Hopton Road

in Streatham shortly before 4

o'clock this afternoon

where they found the

19-year-old with a stab wound.

One person has been arrested.

More than 7000 people have signed

a petition against Surrey council's

decision to turn off street lights

across the county after 1am.

The council says it's

saving £210,000,

but some residents are concerned

at the spike in night-time crime.

1am they're all turned off.

Your television isn't broken,

this is how dark it gets.

Amanda works the overnight shift

in the local supermarket.

when she leaves her home.

You feel very vulnerable,

even walking from the car park

to the store you feel quite

vulnerable, so walking

the nearby streets in pitch

black is disconcerting.

Her husband John has

started a petition to turn

the lights back on.

7,000 people have signed.

We feel like there's a curfew.

If you go for a night out,

they feel they have to be

back before one o'clock.

John says the figures he's been

given by the police show there's

been a spike in crime

since the lights went off.

It goes up to a huge peak,

22% more crime than has

ever been committed.

The council didn't want to be

interviewed, they said

in a statement that crime going up

is not related to the switch off.

They said they did it to help

save money and worked

with the police before

making a decision.

Looking out of the window,

it's completely pitch black.

But Jo is in no doubt

that her car was only broken

into outside her home

because the streetlights were off.

The family lost £2000

worth of new baby stuff.

I was up most of the night.

I should have been able

to hear things but looking

out of the window,

it was completely pitch black.

It was the emotional shock of having

lost all of her new baby things.

Surrey county council say they've

saved £200,000 a year but residents

say even though lights will be

off tonight after 1am,

their fight is still on.

One of London's best known

attractions had a Hollywood

visitor this morning.

Tom Cruise took to the top

of the Tate Modern tower,

filming part of his newest film.

Helicopters waited to catch

the moment he leapt off the top

of the 325 foot chimney

for

the latest Mission

Impossible film.

Time for a quick

tomorrow will be a fine and dry day

and nothing more than

a little patchy cloud.
