they were not looking for trouble. Shajidur Rahman was left with deep

Luton Crown Court. Shajidur Rahman was repeatedly asked

:04:16.:04:30.

under cross`examination whether he and his friends were looking for

:04:31.:04:35.

trouble that night. Searching for violence, and whether they were

:04:36.:04:39.

armed with knives, and repeatedly he said they were not armed and they

:04:40.:04:46.

were trying to avoid trouble. During the attack in January, Shajidur

:04:47.:04:51.

Rahman was repeatedly hit in the face with a meat cleaver, causing

:04:52.:04:58.

some significant injuries. His friend, an inspiring musician, was

:04:59.:05:06.

killed in the brawl just off Bedford's Midland Road. The

:05:07.:05:11.

prosecution say it was fast`moving, violent and savage. Four men from

:05:12.:05:15.

Bedford are accused of that attack which happened after a music video

:05:16.:05:27.

was made by the victim. Did Shajidur Rahman shed any more light on the

:05:28.:05:31.

significance of that video? He told the jury that the video was very

many of his friends in various parts of Bedford. In some cases they can

because of his love of rap music. The accused denied charges of

:06:03.:06:06.

murder, attempted murder and possessing an offensive weapon. The

:06:07.:06:10.

trial is expected to resume tomorrow.

:06:11.:06:14.

Arsonists have set fire to a series of thatched houses

:06:15.:06:16.

The Fire Service was called to a total of five homes

:06:17.:06:19.

The first was at Offord Cluny near Huntingdon just after midnight.

:06:20.:06:23.

The other four were in nearby Brampton, two

:06:24.:06:25.

on the Green, one on West End Road and another on the High Street.

:06:26.:06:29.

The police in Milton Keynes have released an e`fit image of a man

:06:30.:06:37.

they want to speak to in connection with the rape of a teenager.

:06:38.:06:41.

The 18`year`old woman was attacked in Pencarrow Place in the Fishermead

:06:42.:06:44.

It's understood she passed a group of men before one

:06:45.:06:48.

Police also want to identify five men taken from CCTV images

:06:49.:06:55.

The wait is over for the region's teenagers earning

:06:56.:07:00.

Across the board the proportion gaining A to C has

:07:01.:07:07.

risen although the number achieving the top A* has fallen slightly.

:07:08.:07:11.

Grades in maths have risen sharply but in

:07:12.:07:15.

English they've fallen, something many feel is down to a change

Results day at North Cambridge Academy is thoroughly civilised.

:07:27.:07:37.

One`to`one with the principal, Amy has exceeded her expectations.

:07:38.:07:41.

They do put more pressure on themselves.

:07:42.:08:02.

I think the expectation also is harder.

:08:03.:08:11.

But we are in a world where we strive for more.

:08:12.:08:18.

For the first time in years the emphasis solidly

:08:19.:08:21.

on exams, an attempt to improve academic standards.

:08:22.:08:25.

The pressure is evident, not least at this academy

:08:26.:08:29.

It has been so stressful but it has been good at the same

:08:30.:08:35.

time because I know I am working towards something really good.

:08:36.:08:38.

I am going to have to put a lot more work in.

:08:39.:08:41.

I spent a lot of hours revising and I think my results reflect that.

:08:42.:08:44.

It is only for a month or a month and a half so you have

:08:45.:08:48.

I am concerned about the focus on examinations.

:08:49.:08:52.

I do not think life chances should be based on an exam at the end.

:08:53.:08:56.

I think a system where there is a little bit of flexibility is far

:08:57.:08:59.

fairer to a far wider range of students.

:09:00.:09:02.

At this Catholic school, some parents had concerns.

:09:03.:09:08.

When we had the modular one for my daughter previously it was

:09:09.:09:10.

stress`free because you had time to build up to

:09:11.:09:13.

the end result whereas this was just the exam and we struggled with

:09:14.:09:17.

Two years ago this academy was the eighth worst performer in England.

:09:18.:09:24.

These are the first school exams that really matter.

:09:25.:09:37.

For Vicky and thousands like her, it was a nerve wracking morning.

:09:38.:09:41.

More than a third of girls will leave school without

:09:42.:09:53.

five GCSEs, and according to a leading women's charity many will

:09:54.:09:55.

The overall employment rate for women is stalling.

:09:56.:10:03.

Twice as many women work in low paid jobs compared to men, and they're

:10:04.:10:06.

more likely to need treatment for depression and anxiety.

:10:07.:10:08.

Dr Carole Easton is from the Young Women's Trust and a few minutes

:10:09.:10:12.

ago I asked her if headlines about girls traditionally out`performing

:10:13.:10:14.

Yes, it hides the true picture. For more than a decade there have been

:10:15.:10:29.

more young women over the age of 18 outside of education, employment or

:10:30.:10:33.

training and that seems to get hidden by the fact they do slightly

:10:34.:10:39.

better at GCSEs, and then the picture changes dramatically. Where

:10:40.:10:46.

is it going wrong. There are fewer options for young women and once

:10:47.:10:49.

they get to 18 they are offered a narrow range of jobs. There are not

:10:50.:10:55.

so many jobs for them to do and they are being encouraged to work in

:10:56.:11:00.

traditional roles like nursing or childcare and the boys are being

:11:01.:11:04.

given much broader range of options, more apprenticeships, and

:11:05.:11:08.

they seem to have broader choices and be given more second chances.

:11:09.:11:13.

Young women tell us they do not get second chances. If they did not do

:11:14.:11:19.

well or took the wrong subject, they are stuck or do not find anything to

:11:20.:11:25.

do at all. Does this come down to gender discrimination? I think

:11:26.:11:31.

gender discrimination on some occasions and narrowness of vision

:11:32.:11:35.

and viewer. I think people need help to understand that young women and

:11:36.:11:41.

young men are capable of much more and with some encouragement and

:11:42.:11:44.

support young women will have the confidence to do a broader range of

:11:45.:11:47.

subjects and a broader range of occupation. Do we need to rewind and

:11:48.:11:53.

say that careers advice is lacking? I think careers advice has a mixed

:11:54.:11:59.

reputation amongst the young women we have spoken to. They needed again

:12:00.:12:07.

at 20 or 21. So many young women do not know, many of us did not know

:12:08.:12:12.

what to do at 16, but by the time they get to 20 or 21 they might know

:12:13.:12:18.

what they want and they are not being given the chance they want.

:12:19.:12:22.

What advice would you give young women who have had their results? If

:12:23.:12:28.

you have done well, congratulations. If you have not done well, hang out

:12:29.:12:34.

for a second choice. Exam results are not the be all and end all and

:12:35.:12:40.

people do well and we need to help them get the second chances they

:12:41.:12:41.

might need later. There's been speculation

:12:42.:12:45.

on the stock market today that the American drug giant Pfizer may

:12:46.:12:47.

make a fresh bid to buy the UK The company revealed last month that

:13:19.:13:21.

the crowds at the Clacton airshow. Of course, this is the first year

:13:22.:13:29.

students need to stay in some form But there's concern that pupils are

:13:30.:13:34.

automatically sticking with school, without really

:13:35.:13:40.

considering all the other options. NACRO, the crime reduction charity,

:13:41.:13:43.

works with disadvantaged people It has four education centres

:13:44.:13:47.

in this region, and says that shoe horning people

:13:48.:13:52.

into A levels could mean that thousands end up with nothing to

:13:53.:13:55.

show for two years of study. Here in Huntington, there is another

:13:56.:14:02.

option to staying in school. Taster sessions and skills

:14:03.:14:06.

like mechanics to get teenagers back These young people haven't been

:14:07.:14:09.

in trouble with the police, but The charity has picked them up to

:14:10.:14:14.

prevent them playing truant and even stop them from being

:14:15.:14:19.

at risk of offending. Following his GCSEs, 17`year`old

:14:20.:14:24.

:14:25.:14:29.

and felt judged because of This feels like an adult

environment and you can mix in. If you're not feeling good,

:14:33.:14:44.

you can step out. You can really talk to other people

:14:45.:14:46.

and they understand you, whereas you are not being criticised by 30 odd

:14:47.:14:50.

other people in the class. What is it about working here that

:14:51.:14:54.

has been so successful for you? Everything is great,

:14:55.:14:58.

everyone is great. If you can get a qualification

:14:59.:15:01.

behind it, that is fantastic. Michael earns ?30 a week

:15:02.:15:04.

on his course. Why do you think it works better

:15:05.:15:06.

for you here? There is less people so there

:15:07.:15:12.

is more stuff to get around. I'm taking a sport course

:15:13.:15:16.

in September, so hopefully I will be able to get a job to do

:15:17.:15:20.

a sport I'm interested in. NACRO is concerned that with people

:15:21.:15:24.

having to remain in education until they're 18,

:15:25.:15:27.

teenagers will feel they have no I think the message is mainstream

:15:31.:15:36.

:15:37.:15:41.

of the programme is to give them work experience so they are able to

:15:42.:15:43.

go out and experience real`life Maths and English lessons boost the

:15:44.:15:47.

students' skills here, and in the coming weeks NACRO will be working

:15:48.:15:54.

with local schools to offer students another option if their results

:15:55.:15:58.

aren't quite what they hoped for. The race is

on to make sure a stretch of beach in Essex is safe enough to

two men in hard hats and high visibility jackets, looking for more

:16:41.:16:46.

grenades. This is Claire Watson, who found the fit the grenade on Sunday

:16:47.:16:51.

and nearly threw it for her dog to fetch. She was relieved to see a

:16:52.:16:57.

chord and up and a search under way. It is important because you don't

:16:58.:17:04.

know how many are out there. It is concerning for the public. If a

:17:05.:17:09.

child had picked that up, they would not had the sense to put it down.

:17:10.:17:14.

They may have thrown it. A man from the council spoke to pinpoint where

:17:15.:17:18.

she found the explosive and of the the search was to concentrate on. He

:17:19.:17:25.

gave this reassurance. The information from the Army is that

:17:26.:17:30.

these are relatively benign objects. They are quite hard to detonate, but

:17:31.:17:36.

it seems to be that because we found five grenades all in a very similar

:17:37.:17:41.

location, they are part of a crate. This is a picture of the grenade

:17:42.:17:45.

found on Saturday. It is almost as good as new, suggesting a crate has

:17:46.:17:51.

protected it from sea water. That crate has been disturbed, because we

:17:52.:17:59.

are close to the port of Felixstowe. That is why the grenades are washing

:18:00.:18:03.

up. There are often 12 grenade in a crate, so there may be another seven

:18:04.:18:11.

somewhere else. This is amateur footage of one of the grenades are

:18:12.:18:14.

being destroyed in a controlled explosion. Meanwhile, locals have

:18:15.:18:21.

possible explanations. My theory is that during the Second World War, a

:18:22.:18:29.

destroyer was sunk just off the pointy. It is possible they had some

:18:30.:18:36.

of these hand grenades. This business said trade hadn't been hit

:18:37.:18:40.

by the beach closure, but the hope is the search will be finished and

:18:41.:18:44.

the beach reopened by Saturday. Meanwhile, day`trippers are being

:18:45.:18:46.

warned to be careful. You probably know about

:18:47.:18:50.

the beneficial effects of animals, Stroking dogs can help lower blood

:18:51.:18:52.

pressure and has been shown to reduce levels of anxiety

:18:53.:18:56.

for people with Alzheimers. But a charity in Milton Keynes is

:18:57.:19:00.

using horses to help children. Ride High has changed the lives

:19:01.:19:05.

of hundreds of young people These are the children whose luck,

:19:06.:19:10.

whose hope is running out. These are the horses

:19:11.:19:17.

and ponies which give it back. This girl has Asperger's

:19:18.:19:19.

and wouldn't speak. When she first came here,

:19:20.:19:22.

she didn't speak to a single adult, but Quincy, the Norwegian fjord,

:19:23.:19:37.

that was something different. She just started speaking and

:19:38.:19:39.

when she rides, she whispers to The charity Ride High was set set up

:19:40.:19:41.

five years ago, teaching young Since then, 400 children have

:19:42.:19:46.

found comfort and confidence And it is all thanks to a eureka

:20:00.:20:03.

and it made things bearable. Although it wasn't conscious,

:20:04.:20:07.

I think something about that experience I had saved

:20:08.:20:08.

me, and kept me OK. It made me think, kids and horses,

:20:09.:20:13.

we could do something brilliant Once unhappy, these

:20:25.:20:27.

and with a lot of people. I found confidence again, to speak

to new people I've never met before. Since I've come here I probably

talked to more people in public, It is taking young people who are

every person who goes to see the Well, it has clouded over and has

:21:29.:21:47.

started to rain. Most people have headed home but it has been a

:21:48.:21:51.

beautiful day, warm and sunny. Lots of people turned up and some of them

:21:52.:21:55.

got here early to get a good spot to see all the action. A Spitfire. In

:21:56.:22:03.

the bright skies over the seafront, thousands came to soak up the

:22:04.:22:08.

spectacle of the airshow. It is a chance to get together. We come to

:22:09.:22:16.

the red arrows. We come every year. It is a great day. Saw the forecast,

:22:17.:22:24.

it was good. We heard it was a good spectacle. The main attraction,

:22:25.:22:29.

there are only two remaining Lancaster bombers in the world

:22:30.:22:32.

flying together for the very first time. The airshow team have done a

:22:33.:22:38.

fantastic job by putting together the line`up. The plane is a huge

:22:39.:22:44.

draw and flying with the other Lancaster has brought lots of people

:22:45.:22:50.

to the event. We saw that as one of the main draws to bring people

:22:51.:22:55.

here. While other air shows have folded, Clacton has managed to keep

:22:56.:23:02.

going even though it is free. It is due to the sponsorship we get with a

:23:03.:23:06.

local businesses who are keen to beat part of it. There are brochure

:23:07.:23:12.

sales, and we have people going around with the nation buckets, and

:23:13.:23:21.

if everybody but ?1 in there, we could secure another show. It create

:23:22.:23:28.

?1 million to the economy, but with the support, organisers can't

:23:29.:23:36.

guarantee it will still be here in five years time. I am standing on

:23:37.:23:43.

the balcony in the main building, a great view behind me. It is a vital

location of the team. How busy has been for you, Colin? Fairly busy. We

:23:51.:23:56.

have had some missing children to look for. We also had to go to a

:23:57.:24:04.

vessel which was in difficulty. How much preparation is involved here?

:24:05.:24:09.

The preparation for next year starts today, and we will have meetings

:24:10.:24:15.

from April with the other emergency services, police, fire. It

:24:16.:24:19.

culminates in the two days of the airshow where we hope everything

:24:20.:24:25.

works perfectly. Colling, thank you adjoining me. They too tomorrow. The

:24:26.:24:31.

red arrows will be here, and Dave will be live from radio Essex

:24:32.:24:38.

tomorrow morning. Do tune in. I am anxious about the weekend weather.

:24:39.:24:43.

Let's ask the woman who knows. Hello there. After a fine start, things

:24:44.:24:53.

are turning cloudy. This low pressure is moving in, so more cloud

:24:54.:24:59.

from the west, so any sunshine in short supply. One or two light

:25:00.:25:03.

showers also with the figures of this cloud. This evening we will see

:25:04.:25:07.

those showers develop more widely. Some platers may escape them and

:25:08.:25:11.

stay dry, but into the early hours there is a potential them to keep

:25:12.:25:15.

going. They will clear out to North Sea, but there will be more around

:25:16.:25:20.

tomorrow. Tonight will stay in double figures, lows of ten and 14

:25:21.:25:26.

degrees. Tomorrow shows this weather front clearing away the creepy the

:25:27.:25:30.

morning. High`pressure starting to build in, so tomorrow is a good day.

:25:31.:25:37.

Brighter skies and sunshine into the bulk of the day. Feeling pleasant in

:25:38.:25:44.

the sunshine. Power in that sunshine to make it comfortable. It will turn

:25:45.:25:49.

a bit cloudy at times, feeling cool. I is between 17 and 18

:25:50.:25:53.

degrees. This wind from the North direction. `` highs between. Many

:25:54.:26:03.

others will stay dry, and then you think about that bank holiday

:26:04.:26:08.

weekend. This is our pressure pattern. Sunday into Monday. It

:26:09.:26:12.

doesn't end well but it is not a bad start. Saturday and look promising,

:26:13.:26:18.

so just to summarise, some sunny spells on Saturday. The risk of a

:26:19.:26:22.

few showers but many staying dry. A chilly start on Saturday. Lots of

:26:23.:26:28.

sunshine around but it gradually turns wet and windy Monday, but it

:26:29.:26:32.

might not be towards the latter part of the day. I would say the board of

:26:33.:26:38.

our bank holiday weekend not look bad at all. `` bulk of our bank

:26:39.:26:46.

holiday. As the Monday, wet and windy weather getting to us, but not

:26:47.:26:52.

before some chilly nights. Look at those values. Down into single

:26:53.:26:57.

figures. And a quick check with the barometer for you. Feeling better

:26:58.:27:11.

now? It is the end of August. We are back tomorrow night. Good night.

:27:12.:27:16.
