In the programme tonight, house prices in Luton soar | :00:08. | :00:11.
Now, estate agents are predicting they will go even higher this year. | :00:12. | :00:15.
The family agony of early-onset dementia. | :00:16. | :00:17.
The father and daughter diagnosed in their thirties. | :00:18. | :00:19.
The cyclist whose jaw was rebuilt with the help of a 3-D printer. | :00:20. | :00:26.
And over here in the cooling station is a 3-D printing | :00:27. | :00:29.
It's a pretty exciting time for surgery. | :00:30. | :00:36.
And it is FA Cup third round weekend. | :00:37. | :00:38.
I am at Peterborough, who have one of the glamour ties | :00:39. | :00:41.
and a money-spinning match against Premier League | :00:42. | :00:42.
House prices in Luton are rising faster than anywhere else | :00:43. | :00:58.
They have gone up by nearly 20% in the last year, | :00:59. | :01:01.
making it the biggest proportional increase. | :01:02. | :01:03.
According to the Halifax, the average price of a house | :01:04. | :01:05.
an increase of ?41,000 in the last year. | :01:06. | :01:09.
And estate agents say this year, prices are likely to go even higher, | :01:10. | :01:12.
as Kate Bradbrooke has been finding out. | :01:13. | :01:31.
What we are looking at here is your typical two-bedroom house for a | :01:32. | :01:38.
first-time buyer. Houses like this one in demand. Compact, but | :01:39. | :01:46.
affordable. Affordable compared to other areas. This is one of the | :01:47. | :01:51.
reasons the tone is so popular looking to settle down. This house | :01:52. | :01:56.
has been on the market for just one week and already has had ten people | :01:57. | :02:04.
viewing it. For estate agents, it is a busy time of year. According to | :02:05. | :02:10.
the Halifax, host places here last year rose faster than anywhere else | :02:11. | :02:18.
in the country. Appointments to view houses are already putting up fast. | :02:19. | :02:22.
You could be even more growth this year. We should see a spectacular | :02:23. | :02:28.
year again, with house prices continuing to rise, purely because | :02:29. | :02:32.
there is a demand. This has a lot to offer in Luton. It has put it back | :02:33. | :02:42.
on the map. The attraction is very high and they continue to see that | :02:43. | :02:48.
there will be growth. The average pr cis of around ?250,000. It is a | :02:49. | :02:56.
more affordable option compared to some other surrounding areas. We | :02:57. | :03:03.
used to love the name field. We could not quite afford to stay there | :03:04. | :03:07.
are so decided to look further afield. We bought this house two | :03:08. | :03:13.
years ago. It has got amazing transport links to London. We have | :03:14. | :03:17.
the motorway and the train station nearby. I also have good transport | :03:18. | :03:26.
links and also, it is good for me to live near the airport, because I | :03:27. | :03:30.
come from Hungary and I can fly back home quickly. There are plans to | :03:31. | :03:39.
build hundreds of new homes in the town. If you want a place that is | :03:40. | :03:46.
going on the up and you want a place there is a lot of community spirit | :03:47. | :03:50.
and lots of things to do, come here. We will be pleased to see you. If | :03:51. | :03:56.
prices continue to rise, the fear could be that it will close the door | :03:57. | :04:00.
on first-time buyers looking for an affordable place live. | :04:01. | :04:04.
A short while ago, I asked Reuben Young from campaign group | :04:05. | :04:07.
Priced Out whether he was surprised prices had risen so steeply. | :04:08. | :04:09.
Home ownership has become unobtainable for average people. | :04:10. | :04:11.
Key workers like nurses, teachers, junior doctors, | :04:12. | :04:13.
simply can't find any way to buy a home in many areas of England. | :04:14. | :04:21.
They are increasingly finding themselves in a | :04:22. | :04:24.
broken private rented sector, spending over half their income on a | :04:25. | :04:26.
property in which they could be evicted at two months' | :04:27. | :04:29.
For those who are lucky enough to buy, London is, | :04:30. | :04:36.
Even those people who are living and working in London at the moment. | :04:37. | :04:42.
That is why, in places like Luton, the house prices are rocketing | :04:43. | :04:45.
Should we have foreseen this situation, given how | :04:46. | :04:48.
All around the Home Counties and the South East, | :04:49. | :04:55.
they are experiencing high house price rises and Luton is | :04:56. | :04:58.
I suppose the reason it may be rising faster than others | :04:59. | :05:08.
Would you class Luton on affordable any more? | :05:09. | :05:14.
Well, it is a very tricky question to answer, because everything | :05:15. | :05:17.
Like most of London and the South East, the | :05:18. | :05:20.
average person cannot afford to buy the home | :05:21. | :05:22.
they would like to buy in Luton. So, no. | :05:23. | :05:25.
Luton has been earmarked by the government as an area that | :05:26. | :05:27.
will be given money to build new homes specifically | :05:28. | :05:30.
Is the government now getting to grips with the housing shortage? | :05:31. | :05:40.
No, the government is not unfortunately. | :05:41. | :05:42.
They have taken some steps in the direction, | :05:43. | :05:44.
but starter homes are not one of them. | :05:45. | :05:46.
Ostensibly, it is a 20% discount on a home for a first-time buyer. | :05:47. | :05:52.
If these homes are in high demand because they are cheaper, | :05:53. | :05:58.
then more people will be willing to pay more for them, | :05:59. | :06:00.
so developers ar just going to mark up the price in the first instance. | :06:01. | :06:04.
A 38-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving, | :06:05. | :06:14.
after two men were killed in Yaxley near Peterborough. | :06:15. | :06:17.
Best friends Thomas Fletcher and Thomas Northam were | :06:18. | :06:19.
walking along the road when they were hit by a car | :06:20. | :06:21.
Richard Frost, of Dorset Avenue in Chelmsford, appeared before | :06:22. | :06:28.
magistrates this afternoon and has been remanded in custody. | :06:29. | :06:36.
A 15-year-old boy accused of killing a Polish man in Harlow last summer | :06:37. | :06:39.
has appeared at Chelmsford magistrates court. | :06:40. | :06:40.
Arek Yoshvik died after becoming involved in a violent confrontation | :06:41. | :06:43.
with a group of youths. Ben Ando was in court. | :06:44. | :06:52.
The 40-year-old Polish national was sitting outside | :06:53. | :06:55.
a pizza takeaway in this shopping precinct in Harlow late last August | :06:56. | :06:57.
when he was involved in a violent confrontation | :06:58. | :06:59.
He was knocked to the ground and died two days later in hospital. | :07:00. | :07:09.
The killing generated national media interest and Polish dignitaries | :07:10. | :07:11.
were among many who attended a memorial in the town. | :07:12. | :07:15.
A Polish police officer was sent to assist the investigation. | :07:16. | :07:19.
Five were later told they would face no further action, | :07:20. | :07:25.
but one appeared in court today to face the charge of manslaughter. | :07:26. | :07:33.
During the short ten-minute hearing the slightly-built teenager, | :07:34. | :07:35.
wearing a black puffer jacket and grey shirt, was told this case | :07:36. | :07:38.
is too serious for a youth court and had to be sent to the Crown | :07:39. | :07:42.
He was asked if he understood and he nodded. | :07:43. | :07:45.
He was also told he had to continue to observe bail conditions, | :07:46. | :07:48.
The boy did not enter a plea today and must appear | :07:49. | :07:56.
Next tonight, Alzheimer's is often considered to be | :07:57. | :08:03.
a disease of the elderly, but one mother-of-two | :08:04. | :08:05.
from Northamptonshire has been diagnosed at the age of just 36. | :08:06. | :08:08.
Carla Bramall from Rushden, is now bed-bound and lives in a care home. | :08:09. | :08:11.
She is one of just 450 people in the world with a rare genetic | :08:12. | :08:14.
form of the disease. Stuart Ratcliffe reports. | :08:15. | :08:25.
For the last year to 14-15 months, she has got to the point where she | :08:26. | :08:29.
is unable to move or care for herself to any degree. | :08:30. | :08:35.
Carla is a mother of two young children. | :08:36. | :08:39.
Now, it is her mother Rita who cares for them. | :08:40. | :08:42.
Rita's husband, Carla's dad, also died from Alzheimers | :08:43. | :08:44.
It was hard when it was my husband, but | :08:45. | :08:50.
when it is your flesh and blood, it is 100 times harder. | :08:51. | :08:53.
Now, Carla's brother is living with the knowledge that he has a 50% | :08:54. | :08:59.
It is something I have known about since I was nine. | :09:00. | :09:04.
that it was a possibility it could happen. | :09:05. | :09:14.
As I grew older, it became more apparent and, obviously, | :09:15. | :09:16.
I had to think I was probably going to be me. How have you managed to | :09:17. | :09:36.
cope with that? Our condition is extremely rear. Work is ongoing to | :09:37. | :09:42.
raise awareness and to support the supported families. It is a genetic | :09:43. | :09:50.
mutation passed down the generations through a family. It is very rear. | :09:51. | :09:59.
Maybe only 500 families worldwide. But obviously, with others | :10:00. | :10:06.
associating dementia with the older age group, it is particularly | :10:07. | :10:08.
harrowing when it is people saw young who are affected. Every day, | :10:09. | :10:17.
the gore of to the hospital, a visit that Carla will not even remember. | :10:18. | :10:25.
It is just important to others for us to know that we have been near. | :10:26. | :10:29.
A cyclist who smashed his jaw in a road accident | :10:30. | :10:31.
is being helped back to fitness by 3-D printing technology. | :10:32. | :10:33.
Doctors have used the special printers to help them build | :10:34. | :10:36.
a replacement jaw more cheaply and quickly. | :10:37. | :10:37.
And for George Boden, who lives near Stansted, | :10:38. | :10:39.
it has meant a faster recovery and a better end result. | :10:40. | :10:42.
Kate Silver's report contains some graphic images of surgery. | :10:43. | :10:50.
George Boden was a keen cyclist when, in 2011, he had an accident | :10:51. | :10:53.
I was out for a training spin and I slammed into a piece | :10:54. | :11:02.
Not a good idea to hit something with your chin at 30 miles an hour, | :11:03. | :11:14.
Doctors used bone from his shoulder and a metal | :11:15. | :11:20.
They then covered it with a skin flap. | :11:21. | :11:23.
But two issues remained, he had no bottom teeth | :11:24. | :11:25.
It's very difficult to speak when you have the opening | :11:26. | :11:33.
At a centre in north London, this team put in a CT | :11:34. | :11:42.
This is basically an oven, filled with nitrogen and powdered nylon. | :11:43. | :11:50.
It is already at a very hot temperature, but when the laser hits | :11:51. | :11:54.
the nylon it pushes it to melting point. | :11:55. | :11:57.
Here there are making an engineering product, layer by layer. | :11:58. | :11:59.
And here in the cooling station is a 3D printing | :12:00. | :12:02.
It is a pretty exciting time for surgery. | :12:03. | :12:09.
George's doctor, Ian Hutchinson, says 3D printing has | :12:10. | :12:11.
We use it to actually design exactly what we're going to take. | :12:12. | :12:24.
Apart from planning the operation, George's doctors also used the model | :12:25. | :12:30.
to make bespoke teeth implants, perfectly fitted for his new jaw. | :12:31. | :12:38.
The technology helps to maintain a sense of hope. | :12:39. | :12:44.
First of all, if you know there's a solution you keep | :12:45. | :12:48.
going and secondly, red wine helps enormously. | :12:49. | :12:50.
There is also that passion for cycling, which survives in spite | :12:51. | :12:53.
Plans for a series of rush-hour road closures in Cambridge | :12:54. | :13:04.
That is the decision from the Greater Cambridge City Deal Board. | :13:05. | :13:07.
They had proposed the idea to tackle congestion, | :13:08. | :13:09.
They will now be looking at pollution charging | :13:10. | :13:12.
and ideas to make the city a Clean Air Zone. | :13:13. | :13:21.
And finally, from us it is 20 years since we began broadcasting this | :13:22. | :13:24.
local version of the Look East news service from Cambridge. | :13:25. | :13:27.
Back in 1997, we were covering the cold snap, including this gas | :13:28. | :13:30.
explosion blamed on a frozen water pipe, and these narrow boat owners | :13:31. | :13:33.
whose boats became frozen in the canal in Northampton. | :13:34. | :13:35.
They did manage to make the most of it, | :13:36. | :13:37.
However long you have been watching, thank you for you company, | :13:38. | :13:48.
I am back at 10.30pm, but here is David and Suzie | :13:49. | :13:50.
If you're an Ed Sheeran fan, you'll love his new song dedicated | :13:51. | :14:05.
And the Posh players heading to Stamford Bridge to take | :14:06. | :14:13.
This week on Look East we've been reporting on the problems disabled | :14:14. | :14:20.
people have using lavatories on trains and at railway stations. | :14:21. | :14:22.
You've been contacting us in large numbers. | :14:23. | :14:24.
And the overwhelming message is that the service isn't good enough. | :14:25. | :14:33.
Away from trains, there is one small crumb of comfort | :14:34. | :14:36.
in the shape of what are called Changing Places toilets. | :14:37. | :14:38.
They're bigger than normal disabled loos ...and they can be particularly | :14:39. | :14:41.
useful for parents looking after disabled youngsters. | :14:42. | :14:42.
Vela Morrison and her six-year-old daughter Eilidh are on a shopping | :14:43. | :14:56.
trip to the grand Arcade in Cambridge. | :14:57. | :14:58.
Ailey sometimes needs changing when the family are out. | :14:59. | :15:00.
But an ordinary disabled toilet doesn't meet their needs. | :15:01. | :15:02.
A Changing Places toilet is much better. | :15:03. | :15:04.
What makes this different from a ordinary disabled toilet? | :15:05. | :15:06.
The main difference is a changing bench. | :15:07. | :15:13.
For people who have continence issues. | :15:14. | :15:15.
And a hoist for people who can't self transfer between wheelchair and | :15:16. | :15:18.
The Changing Places campaign was started in 2006 to help | :15:19. | :15:28.
an estimated 250,000 people who, like Eilidh, | :15:29. | :15:30.
The only way we could use a standard disabled | :15:31. | :15:45.
would be on the floor, and that would mean lifting her | :15:46. | :15:48.
The older she gets, the harder that becomes for both of us. | :15:49. | :15:52.
Across the country, there are 909 changing | :15:53. | :15:55.
Nicole looks after her seven-year-old grandson Gabriel. | :15:56. | :16:01.
She is frustrated that there is not one changing | :16:02. | :16:03.
People don't realise the frustration I have sometimes. | :16:04. | :16:12.
If you go into a shop and say, can I change him? | :16:13. | :16:18.
A lot of places have been very accommodating and | :16:19. | :16:22.
I've changed him on a folding table somewhere. | :16:23. | :16:25.
From the city centre, it is a ten minute | :16:26. | :16:31.
walk to find the nearest Changing Places toilet in Norwich. | :16:32. | :16:33.
Through a park, across a busy road and follow | :16:34. | :16:35.
As conveniences go, it's not very convenient. | :16:36. | :16:38.
People are actually just not going places, not | :16:39. | :16:40.
They are being excluded from things because it is too awkward and | :16:41. | :16:45.
Changing Places toilets are changing things slowly. | :16:46. | :16:51.
But for many disabled people and their carers, | :16:52. | :16:55.
getting access to good toilet facilities remains a | :16:56. | :16:57.
And thanks to all of you who got in touch. | :16:58. | :17:05.
If there's a story you think we need to investigate, | :17:06. | :17:07.
Next tonight, the last of our films looking at the year ahead. | :17:08. | :17:19.
So far we've covered business, Brexit and council devolution. | :17:20. | :17:21.
And for athletes this year's focus is the World Athletics Championships | :17:22. | :17:25.
and the accompanying Para Athletics Championships. | :17:26. | :17:27.
It's the biggest event to be held in London | :17:28. | :17:29.
Among those hoping to reach new heights, | :17:30. | :17:34.
Jonathan Broom-Edwards from Colchester. | :17:35. | :17:38.
This from our Sports Editor, Jonathan Park. | :17:39. | :17:41.
A New Year, but for a high jumper, the same old | :17:42. | :17:49.
Working on the basics is essential to take on the world in | :17:50. | :17:53.
I'm expecting the atmosphere to be huge. | :17:54. | :17:55.
I know how huge it was as a spectator in | :17:56. | :18:01.
2012, so to be in there with people watching, | :18:02. | :18:05.
Jonathan Broom-Edwards, a Paralympian with added spring | :18:06. | :18:12.
London is calling now and the World Championships. | :18:13. | :18:17.
The biggest sporting event to take place in the city | :18:18. | :18:20.
Normally, after an Olympic year, we have a bit more of | :18:21. | :18:23.
And that work Championships in terms of | :18:24. | :18:31.
preparation for the next Olympic cycle, we would do a lot more work | :18:32. | :18:34.
This year, I can't afford to do that. | :18:35. | :18:37.
This year, we have had to really keep the screw tight. | :18:38. | :18:39.
Jonathan, who is from Colchester, is one of a number of Olympic and | :18:40. | :18:42.
Paralympic athletes from our region charing to the Olympic Park. | :18:43. | :18:45.
Some, like sprinter Johnny Peacock, are | :18:46. | :18:48.
Others, like long jumper Greg Rutherford have a point to prove. | :18:49. | :18:52.
Only bronze in the Olympics and work to be done. | :18:53. | :18:55.
I'm going to adjust your purpose to try and get you as | :18:56. | :18:57.
The moment you feel you are straight, there is a | :18:58. | :19:01.
slight forward lean, and that is coming from the pelvis. | :19:02. | :19:03.
Back to Jonathan, who combines high jump | :19:04. | :19:05.
with his other passion, fixing people's broken bodies. | :19:06. | :19:07.
A profession he chose which helps them understand | :19:08. | :19:09.
He was born with a club foot, something not always | :19:10. | :19:17.
I am the sort of person that I don't like to be told | :19:18. | :19:21.
And going into actually being classified | :19:22. | :19:23.
It was like a wow, should I be doing something different? | :19:24. | :19:28.
I am amongst disabled athletes, you know? | :19:29. | :19:31.
I had only just seen it as a gammy foot. | :19:32. | :19:36.
The coach has carefully adapted Jonathan's training programme to | :19:37. | :19:43.
If I can get 50 or 60% out of that ankle | :19:44. | :19:48.
joint, compared to a normal joint, I am doing well. | :19:49. | :19:50.
That would have a massive effect on Jonathan's high jumping. | :19:51. | :19:53.
The left side, even though he takes off on | :19:54. | :19:56.
Jonathan knocked out all but one of his | :19:57. | :20:00.
He helps in London to be the undisputed champion. | :20:01. | :20:06.
It's a big weekend for football fans. | :20:07. | :20:09.
The third round of the FA Cup - the moment the big clubs get | :20:10. | :20:12.
involved and the moment the small clubs hope to cause an upset. | :20:13. | :20:17.
Here in the East, we've got Peterborough from League One. | :20:18. | :20:20.
Heading to Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday. | :20:21. | :20:24.
Tom Williams has spent the day with the Posh players, gearing up | :20:25. | :20:27.
For many of these players, Sunday's tie | :20:28. | :20:32.
is not just the match of the | :20:33. | :20:34.
Still 48 hours away, important to stay cool, keep loose, before | :20:35. | :20:39.
testing themselves against the Premier League's number one team. | :20:40. | :20:41.
It is a chance for you to go there, for | :20:42. | :20:52.
the players anyway, to be on the same pitch with world-class | :20:53. | :20:56.
And it is things you dream of when you are younger. | :20:57. | :21:06.
David Farrell and goalkeeper Mark Tyler both | :21:07. | :21:19.
Even then, Chelsea's team was brimming | :21:20. | :21:22.
That was what I remember about the day. | :21:23. | :21:26.
It was probably the only time you to enjoy | :21:27. | :21:37.
We came off the pitch proud of ourselves. | :21:38. | :21:43.
The fans were proud of as and the management team, so it was a | :21:44. | :21:46.
The boys have got to go there and enjoy it. | :21:47. | :21:49.
If we can stick it out for an hour, you know what I mean, | :21:50. | :21:55.
Peterborough lose money every year, so victory in the last round | :21:56. | :22:00.
With teams sharing profits of gate receipts, | :22:01. | :22:03.
I spoke to Bradford, who a couple of years ago | :22:04. | :22:10.
Roughly, with all the spin offs, hopefully, the club will make | :22:11. | :22:19.
Win or lose, it is money that is not in the budget. | :22:20. | :22:26.
Money at the manager will help to invest in | :22:27. | :22:28.
And in the other cup games, four of our teams play tomorrow. | :22:29. | :22:32.
He's calling it his love song to Suffolk. | :22:33. | :22:52.
The new song by Ed Sheeran released today, dedicated to his home | :22:53. | :22:56.
The song is called Castle on the Hill, it's inspired | :22:57. | :23:00.
by Framlingham Castle and it's all about what it like to grow up | :23:01. | :23:03.
This from our chief reporter, Kim Riley. | :23:04. | :23:07.
Performing live on radio this morning. | :23:08. | :23:18.
This is that castle on the Hill, Framlington's famous 12th century | :23:19. | :23:31.
Ed performs all around the world, but this is home. | :23:32. | :23:39.
The lyrics tell of growing up in a small market | :23:40. | :23:42.
The Station pub, where he signed his record deal. | :23:43. | :23:45.
And, three years ago, entertained Taylor Swift. | :23:46. | :23:48.
Friends from his time at Thomas Mill school | :23:49. | :23:50.
Here, young Ed listening to a talk by Sir Steve | :23:51. | :23:55.
Today, a panel of current students gave us their verdict on the song. | :23:56. | :24:10.
We've all grown up in and around Framlingham, so we can kind of | :24:11. | :24:13.
relate to the things he is singing about. | :24:14. | :24:22.
It seems like such nostalgic song for him. | :24:23. | :24:24.
It's kind of rubs off on other people. | :24:25. | :24:25.
Being at the school and spending time with | :24:26. | :24:29.
friends at the castle, you know, it's just what we do. | :24:30. | :24:31.
Some of the activities see describes, saying | :24:32. | :24:33.
going out and getting drunk with his friends, | :24:34. | :24:35.
although we wouldn't add admit to it, it is very much something | :24:36. | :24:38.
I think it is so interesting that he speaks about the | :24:39. | :24:43.
castle, because it is such an iconic part of the town. | :24:44. | :24:46.
It is nice to see someone from the school go on and do | :24:47. | :24:49.
I think it has inspired a lot of people to go and | :24:50. | :24:53.
His bittersweet love story for Suffolk already a | :24:54. | :24:58.
Yesterday, you said it would be mother. Has anything changed? | :24:59. | :25:24.
Perhaps less cold is a better word. A lot of cloud around this weekend. | :25:25. | :25:28.
Last night, minus five and low for last night. You default photograph | :25:29. | :25:35.
of the frost on the ground. Bright skies around the region. This is the | :25:36. | :25:43.
Essex coast line. More cloud has been introduced across the region | :25:44. | :25:49.
and outbreaks of patchy rain. Where's the rain has been following, | :25:50. | :25:53.
initially liked and patchy, as it moves through, the front, more | :25:54. | :26:02.
bursts of rain in a cloudy and down evening, but not as cloud as last | :26:03. | :26:07.
night. -- not as cold as last night. No problems with frost for tonight. | :26:08. | :26:12.
Much of the rain should be out of the way back first thing tomorrow | :26:13. | :26:17.
morning. If you spots across eastern counties. Pressure wise, high | :26:18. | :26:21.
pressure building in. You would think by weather for the weekend, | :26:22. | :26:25.
but unfortunately a bottle of claret. A cloudy forecast. Starting | :26:26. | :26:31.
the day with spots of rain. Mainly dry, but the big thing is it will be | :26:32. | :26:36.
less cold than it has been. Not quite as mild as we would have | :26:37. | :26:42.
hoped, because a bottom-up cloud around. Not much prospect of | :26:43. | :26:47.
standard. But a dry weekend with a fuse spots of rain on Saturday first | :26:48. | :26:52.
thing. A gloomy and dull day with messed around. For much of the day. | :26:53. | :26:56.
Temperatures should be eight or 9 degrees. A change of wind direction, | :26:57. | :27:05.
north-westerly, and this pushes cold air, less cold air this way. That is | :27:06. | :27:12.
how it is for Sunday. Another change for Monday, the high pressure breaks | :27:13. | :27:16.
down, brisk winds for Monday. A spell of rain but not until after | :27:17. | :27:21.
nightfall. We get rid of the cloud and get brighter conditions as we | :27:22. | :27:26.
started Tuesday. It will be colder. This cold for a couple of days and | :27:27. | :27:30.
then colder conditions return and the return of some frost. That is | :27:31. | :27:36.
all for as. See you next week. Goodbye. | :27:37. | :27:51.

and should British tourists have been warned about the risks? | :27:58. | :28:01. |
