Violent and heartless - a judge's words as he jails a woman | :00:00. | :00:00.
for life for killing her half sister. | :00:00. | :00:08.
we look at why the number of rough sleepers in some of our | :00:09. | :00:12.
And a lucky escape for Saints - no punishment for letting | :00:13. | :00:18.
an apparently concussed George North play on. | :00:19. | :00:28.
First tonight, she was described by the judge | :00:29. | :00:32.
Yvonne Caylor disguised herself as a man before forcing her way | :00:33. | :00:38.
into her half sister Nicki Collingbourne's Letchworth | :00:39. | :00:40.
Today, she was sentenced to life in prison, as our Home Affairs | :00:41. | :00:48.
Why do you think they looked like a man? | :00:49. | :00:53.
From the moment Yvonne Caylor was arrested by police, | :00:54. | :00:58.
disguised as a man on the way to murder her sister, | :00:59. | :01:06.
Well, it can't be me, I couldn't push a | :01:07. | :01:14.
We believe it's you, you said it's not. | :01:15. | :01:18.
53-year-old Caylor killed her 26-year-old half-sister | :01:19. | :01:25.
Nicki Collingbourne after tricking her into opening the door. | :01:26. | :01:27.
flat in Letchworth in May this year, her motive was to stop Nicki | :01:28. | :01:34.
from giving evidence against her at a burglary trial. | :01:35. | :01:36.
The murder weapon - this ceramic chicken-shaped pot that | :01:37. | :01:39.
Caylor picked up and brought down on her sister's head. | :01:40. | :01:45.
A member of the family found Nicki's body in the flat. | :01:46. | :01:48.
The killer mutilated her while she was still alive, | :01:49. | :01:50.
trying to make it look like a suicide. | :01:51. | :01:54.
Sentenced to a minimum 27 years in jail, the judge told | :01:55. | :01:56.
Caylor she was a violent, dishonest, deceitful, | :01:57. | :01:58.
He said it was chilling to hear her speak of her sister without | :01:59. | :02:07.
She has lied and been truly dishonest throughout the whole | :02:08. | :02:13.
The manner in which she killed Nicki has | :02:14. | :02:19.
not only been very tragic and a gruesome set of circumstances. | :02:20. | :02:33.
Caylor had gone to a fancy dress shop for advice on how | :02:34. | :02:37.
The judge called it a relatively crude disguise. | :02:38. | :02:40.
In happier times, the half-sisters together. | :02:41. | :02:42.
The family believe Nicki's murder had such a devastating | :02:43. | :02:45.
effect on her mother, she died before the trial began. | :02:46. | :02:47.
When it's one sister murdering another, it adds an extra dimension | :02:48. | :02:50.
Yvonne has received a sentence that is probably right | :02:51. | :02:56.
Caylor smiled to her family after she was sentenced. | :02:57. | :03:05.
One distraught family member told her, "Goodbye" | :03:06. | :03:06.
Next tonight - the rise in rough sleepers in some of our towns | :03:07. | :03:14.
Every winter, councils take a snapshot of how many | :03:15. | :03:21.
people are on the streets on one given night. | :03:22. | :03:23.
And it's the bigger towns that have seen the sharpest rise. | :03:24. | :03:26.
In Cambridge the number has more than doubled | :03:27. | :03:28.
since this time last year - with 40 people sleeping rough | :03:29. | :03:30.
and in Milton Keynes the figure has nearly trebled. | :03:31. | :03:39.
Two years ago, Andrek was living under a bridge, | :03:40. | :03:43.
at this Mexican restaurant in Cambridge. | :03:44. | :03:51.
Andreas, who was homeless for seven years, prison on and off | :03:52. | :03:53.
for many more, is on work experience, but he says not all | :03:54. | :03:58.
been on the street, in trouble, or you've had a prison term inside, | :03:59. | :04:05.
If someone's willing to change, then I think they deserve | :04:06. | :04:17.
The lads were put forward by the charity Winter | :04:18. | :04:22.
Comfort who say a clogged housing system is causing a huge rise in | :04:23. | :04:25.
We're seeing a massive increase in service | :04:26. | :04:33.
users and people who present on a daily basis they say | :04:34. | :04:37.
We've seen an increase over the past five years on a regular | :04:38. | :04:42.
basis and, since January this year, we've seen an 18% increase. | :04:43. | :04:45.
Boss Luis Navarro nurtures talent regardless of | :04:46. | :04:47.
background and think others should do the same. | :04:48. | :04:53.
We have also all the type of problems like | :04:54. | :04:59.
There are great opportunities there to work with | :05:00. | :05:02.
people that really deserve the chance. | :05:03. | :05:04.
For businesses, it makes sense. | :05:05. | :05:11.
This is not something we do from a charitable | :05:12. | :05:15.
point of view, we do these because it works. | :05:16. | :05:21.
Luis, who owns this restaurant, says he's noticed a huge | :05:22. | :05:25.
rise in a number of homeless people in Cambridge in recent years. | :05:26. | :05:28.
He's from Mexico City where the problem is huge. | :05:29. | :05:30.
He said if not more is done to help then people | :05:31. | :05:32.
become desensitised and no one notices any more. | :05:33. | :05:35.
In Stevenage, rough sleepers were counted at five last year. | :05:36. | :05:37.
This evening, an event is being held here, inviting homeless people for | :05:38. | :05:41.
a meal, Christmas gifts and care packages. | :05:42. | :05:43.
We are only doing a tiny part, we're just a | :05:44. | :05:54.
Sadly, every time those pieces get good together, | :05:55. | :05:57.
something breaks that puzzle up and we have to start again. | :05:58. | :06:00.
Experts say the actual number of rough sleepers | :06:01. | :06:03.
in our towns may be far higher than | :06:04. | :06:06.
Sport, and Northampton Saints have escaped punishment for the way | :06:07. | :06:18.
they dealt with a head injury to their winger George North | :06:19. | :06:21.
Medical staff allowed him to stay on despite footage | :06:22. | :06:24.
which appeared to show that he was knocked unconscious. | :06:25. | :06:26.
James Burridge reports from Franklins Gardens. | :06:27. | :06:33.
There is a huge sense of relief here in Northampton | :06:34. | :06:35.
tonight as a result of | :06:36. | :06:41.
this verdict of the George North's suspected concussion. | :06:42. | :06:43.
Well, because the player is one of the | :06:44. | :06:46.
He is also, though, one of the most concussed. | :06:47. | :06:49.
So, when questions are being raised about how this place looks | :06:50. | :06:52.
after one of its own, it becomes a big story. | :06:53. | :06:54.
This was the incident which has caused so much controversy. | :06:55. | :06:57.
George North lying motionless after a midair tackle | :06:58. | :06:59.
The medical team immediately running to treat him. | :07:00. | :07:05.
North was given a pitch side assessment, lasting eight minutes, | :07:06. | :07:09.
Like all premiership clubs, the medics reviewed the incident | :07:10. | :07:12.
on computers, but they missed these particular replay shots, | :07:13. | :07:14.
which appeared to show the player concussed. | :07:15. | :07:16.
The club accepts North may have lost consciousness and should not | :07:17. | :07:19.
The investigation panel are not going to punish the club. | :07:20. | :07:26.
They believe they acted in the player's best | :07:27. | :07:28.
interests and followed the correct medical procedures. | :07:29. | :07:33.
That's their immediate priority in everything that they do. | :07:34. | :07:40.
Not about winning games, not about helping me get better | :07:41. | :07:43.
players out on the field or back out, it is always player welfare. | :07:44. | :07:46.
And they have admitted that if they saw a different | :07:47. | :07:49.
view of the incident, they would have reacted differently. | :07:50. | :07:56.
Two years ago, I filmed behind-the-scenes with | :07:57. | :07:58.
They train to try and prevent cases like George North's | :07:59. | :08:08.
This investigation has effectively blamed the system, | :08:09. | :08:15.
and concluded, with nine recommendations, to make sure | :08:16. | :08:17.
this type of incident does not happen again. | :08:18. | :08:23.
Lenny Newman is a former first-team manager and player at Northampton | :08:24. | :08:26.
who missed a whole season because of concussion. | :08:27. | :08:28.
I mean, the club admit they got it wrong, but they have | :08:29. | :08:31.
see how there can be any punishment for what is, | :08:32. | :08:41.
that is not up to scratch with modern-day professionalism. | :08:42. | :08:44.
The worrying thing is, if anything, the only thing the medical staff | :08:45. | :08:47.
at Northampton should have done is pulled the player | :08:48. | :08:49.
if there is any reasonable doubt that he had been concussed. | :08:50. | :08:59.
George North all along has said he was not concussed, | :09:00. | :09:01.
has since returned to training, and has been cleared | :09:02. | :09:04.
But it is clear the system and the means of protecting players | :09:05. | :09:07.
Now, since today's verdicts, some of question why there | :09:08. | :09:18.
hasn't been a punishment when you consider how players get | :09:19. | :09:20.
lengthy ban for high tackles near the shoulder | :09:21. | :09:23.
or neck, but there doesn't appear to be any correlation. | :09:24. | :09:32.
I think even though there are actually any | :09:33. | :09:35.
repercussions for the club, there are implications in the long term | :09:36. | :09:38.
Investigations are continuing into the cause of a fire | :09:39. | :09:41.
on the Earlstrees industrial estate in Corby earlier today. | :09:42. | :09:43.
70 firefighters from three counties tackled the blaze. | :09:44. | :09:49.
were warned to keep doors and windows closed | :09:50. | :09:52.
That's the late news from Look East - I'll leave | :09:53. | :10:03.
A cloudy picture across some of the region had been | :10:04. | :10:12.
moment but, as we go through the night, | :10:13. | :10:14.
clear skies developing with | :10:15. | :10:15.
We are expecting lows down close to freezing. | :10:16. | :10:19.
It brings the risk of some icy patches where we had those | :10:20. | :10:22.
earlier showers and certainly a risk of frost as we get through to first | :10:23. | :10:26.
Now, tomorrow morning's pressure passengers high pressure building | :10:27. | :10:29.
chilly start and, through the morning, | :10:30. | :10:32.
certainly looking like there will be some long spells of | :10:33. | :10:35.
sunshine once the mist and fog has lifted. | :10:36. | :10:37.
So, temperatures rising in the sunshine to around 6-7 C. | :10:38. | :10:39.
Still on the chilly side with a light, | :10:40. | :10:41.
Our wind will increase as the day goes on and into | :10:42. | :10:45.
More cloud coming in from the west by the end | :10:46. | :10:48.
The national weather's coming up but here's the outlook. | :10:49. | :10:51.
A windy forecast expected for Friday, rather | :10:52. | :10:53.
cloudy with rain pushing in | :10:54. | :10:54.
later and rather windy but mild for the Christmas weekend. | :10:55. | :11:01.
good for us. Mild by the time we reach Christmas Day. | :11:02. | :11:04.
Hello there, there is wet and very windy weather on the way in the | :11:05. | :11:09.
run-up to Christmas. The worst of the weather to the northern half of | :11:10. | :11:15.
the UK. We have a strengthening jet out of North America that is | :11:16. | :11:19.
propgating across the Atlantic. Rushing our way. Picking up low | :11:20. | :11:23.
pressure, deepening them, tracking them to the north-west of Scotland, | :11:24. | :11:28.
hence the wind and rain. Tonight, we have gale force | :11:29. | :11:29. |
