Jakonson on his novel about Donald Trump. Here on BBC One, it's time | :00:00. | :00:00.
Police officers here fall silent | :00:00. | :00:00.
to remember PC Keith Palmer as Luton faces new questions | :00:07. | :00:09.
?10 an hour - why the Labour leader came to our region | :00:10. | :00:14.
And I will have the forecast for the weather for the week ahead. | :00:15. | :00:30.
Police officers from across our region today joined colleagues | :00:31. | :00:35.
around the country in commemorating PC Keith Palmer, the officer | :00:36. | :00:38.
killed in the Westminster attack last month. | :00:39. | :00:42.
But as police stations fell silent, questions about the attacker's links | :00:43. | :00:45.
Khalid Masood spent a number of years in the town. | :00:46. | :00:51.
At police headquarters in Bedford, they gathered. | :00:52. | :00:57.
The flag at half-mast, a tribute to PC Keith Palmer. | :00:58. | :01:03.
In Northampton, like many places across the region, | :01:04. | :01:05.
they stood silent, remembering one of their own. | :01:06. | :01:09.
It's a great opportunity today for British policing | :01:10. | :01:11.
to come together as a family and show our respects | :01:12. | :01:14.
You know, we have thousands of officers and staff every day that | :01:15. | :01:21.
come to work to do a brilliant job keeping people safe and PC Palmer | :01:22. | :01:25.
Khalid Masood, who murdered PC Palmer, along with four others. | :01:26. | :01:29.
Now come newspaper claims he was radicalised in Luton, here. | :01:30. | :01:31.
His name, it says, found stuck to leaflets | :01:32. | :01:33.
inside the mosque naming him as their website contact. | :01:34. | :01:35.
A website, the article says, that called Muslims to pick up arms | :01:36. | :01:42.
Qadeet Baksh, the chairman here, strongly refutes the allegations. | :01:43. | :01:50.
If you look at the events from the 22nd of March, | :01:51. | :01:55.
when the events at Westminster took place, two days later, | :01:56. | :01:58.
I stood here on the pulpit giving a sermon condemning that act | :01:59. | :02:01.
completely and calling the Muslims to condemn it generally. | :02:02. | :02:07.
Why on earth would, a week later, you find a leaflet | :02:08. | :02:11.
with a sticker with Khalid Masood's name on it? | :02:12. | :02:13.
And then, also, five years later, after he'd left Luton. | :02:14. | :02:20.
This Qadeet sermon condemning what Masood did... | :02:21. | :02:22.
"And jumping out of his car, rushing at the Parliament, | :02:23. | :02:25.
Masood never came to this mosque, he told us. | :02:26. | :02:40.
But others claim this is where he worshipped | :02:41. | :02:42.
The problem is that the very creed of what the people at the helm | :02:43. | :02:49.
of the mosque believe in is extreme, is fundamental and will drive | :02:50. | :02:52.
Living in Luton for three years, Masood taught English | :02:53. | :02:57.
A director of the school was Qadeet Baksh. | :02:58. | :03:03.
But it and the mosque were separate, he told us. | :03:04. | :03:07.
There is no link between the school and this mosque except that myself | :03:08. | :03:10.
and Mr Latif were actually directors of a school. | :03:11. | :03:16.
In terms of policies, procedures, there is no link. | :03:17. | :03:19.
It was not an Islamist school, it was an English-language school | :03:20. | :03:23.
and we had Muslims teaching there, non-Muslims teaching there. | :03:24. | :03:26.
It is completely separate, had nothing to do with this mosque. | :03:27. | :03:30.
Masood didn't come here, they told us. | :03:31. | :03:36.
Its form of Islam is conservative, they say, but not extreme. | :03:37. | :03:42.
This story is now being picked up by a number of other national | :03:43. | :03:44.
newspapers and that image of the leaflet with Khalid | :03:45. | :03:48.
Masood's contact details is all over social media. | :03:49. | :03:50.
This town once again under the glare of the media. | :03:51. | :03:53.
The newspaper says it has the evidence, | :03:54. | :03:57.
the mosque says it is now considering a legal reaction. | :03:58. | :04:03.
A drunk driver who flipped her vehicle over while trying | :04:04. | :04:07.
to negotiate a roundabout near Peterborough has been | :04:08. | :04:09.
This extraordinary dash-cam footage captured the moment Tania Chikwature | :04:10. | :04:13.
tried to illegally overtake a lorry on the A605. | :04:14. | :04:18.
Peterborough Magistrates heard she had her 20-month-old son in the car. | :04:19. | :04:22.
Chikwature was more than three times over the drink-drive limit. | :04:23. | :04:30.
The national minimum wage would rise to at least ?10 an hour if Labour | :04:31. | :04:33.
gets elected in 2020 - that was the message | :04:34. | :04:36.
The Labour leader chose to launch his pledge | :04:37. | :04:41.
at Luton Town Football Club, as it was the first club | :04:42. | :04:45.
in England to give employees the so-called "living wage". | :04:46. | :04:47.
The nightmare of getting grass to grow in December. | :04:48. | :04:53.
From the pitch outside to politics inside. | :04:54. | :04:57.
The Labour leader here to talk to workers at Luton Town. | :04:58. | :05:01.
This was the first football club in the country to give | :05:02. | :05:03.
It's over and above what is required by law. | :05:04. | :05:08.
Today, Jeremy Corbyn outlined his party's pledge to raise | :05:09. | :05:13.
the national minimum wage to at least ?10 an hour. | :05:14. | :05:17.
The east of England, it is an area of low wages, | :05:18. | :05:20.
of many working in food processing and agriculture sectors | :05:21. | :05:25.
Many people all over the country working in care homes, care workers, | :05:26. | :05:34.
are very low paid indeed, so we think it will be a massive | :05:35. | :05:37.
boost to many of the worst off in this country, | :05:38. | :05:39.
more than 5 million people earn less than the existing living wage. | :05:40. | :05:42.
One of our viewers has actually tweeted this morning calling this | :05:43. | :05:46.
idea admirable but saying it is usually at the expense | :05:47. | :05:48.
It actually will benefit the taxpayer, because it will cut | :05:49. | :05:57.
the tax credit bill, but it will also mean there's more | :05:58. | :06:00.
There are worries from some small businesses about the costs involved, | :06:01. | :06:04.
but according to the club's chief executive, the sums do add up. | :06:05. | :06:08.
It goes up to ?8.45 this month, so they get a slight | :06:09. | :06:12.
increase this month, so that is about ?1.20 | :06:13. | :06:15.
So all of those people, you know, we retain longer, | :06:16. | :06:23.
so there is a little bit more loyalty. | :06:24. | :06:27.
So from a business perspective, it's actually a case of how can | :06:28. | :06:29.
We have a problem with zero contracts, zero hours | :06:30. | :06:33.
contracts and things, so if we can improve | :06:34. | :06:37.
people's living standards, then it improves their whole life | :06:38. | :06:39.
and I think that is really fantastic. | :06:40. | :06:41.
For workers like Holly, the living wage was just the ticket, | :06:42. | :06:43.
allowing her to plan and save for the future. | :06:44. | :06:45.
It made a really big difference and last year, | :06:46. | :06:50.
me and my partner were able to buy a house and get a mortgage, | :06:51. | :06:53.
so it has made a really big difference with that. | :06:54. | :06:56.
And this year, we are now starting to save for a wedding as well, | :06:57. | :07:00.
so it is a big benefit, a really positive thing to happen. | :07:01. | :07:03.
A change like this won't come quickly and is by | :07:04. | :07:08.
The party's first goal - to win the next election | :07:09. | :07:11.
Airlander - the world's longest aircraft - | :07:12. | :07:21.
is back outside for the first time since its heavy landing in August. | :07:22. | :07:24.
After months of repairs behind closed doors in Cardington, | :07:25. | :07:26.
it's hoped the airship could be airborne by the end of the week. | :07:27. | :07:29.
After seven long months Airlander is back outside. | :07:30. | :07:40.
At almost 92 metres long, containing enough helium to fill | :07:41. | :07:43.
15 Olympic swimming pools, it's an impressive sight. | :07:44. | :07:45.
Well, for safety reasons today, this is as close as we can | :07:46. | :07:48.
get to the Airlander because although it is tethered, | :07:49. | :07:50.
it is now floating and moving around its moorings circle. | :07:51. | :07:52.
This is the reason why it has been repaired. | :07:53. | :07:58.
That nosedive landing on its second test flight back in August. | :07:59. | :08:03.
Last week, I revealed these new inflatable landing feet, | :08:04. | :08:06.
have been fitted to stop that happening again. | :08:07. | :08:10.
Technology the pilots are keen to test. | :08:11. | :08:13.
So the visible stuff like the auxiliary landing system, | :08:14. | :08:19.
the inflatable feet forward at the main skids, | :08:20. | :08:21.
and they will allow us to test and push the boundaries | :08:22. | :08:24.
Airlander could be back in the skies as early as the end of the week | :08:25. | :08:30.
and the company has big plans beyond that. | :08:31. | :08:32.
During the summer, we hope to become a familiar sight throughout | :08:33. | :08:36.
We'll look for some big events to visit so people can see us, | :08:37. | :08:42.
and by the end of the summer hopefully look to go abroad, | :08:43. | :08:45.
perhaps down to Germany or even over the North Sea. | :08:46. | :08:49.
Fast forward to 2020 and the firm hopes to be building | :08:50. | :08:52.
For now, all eyes will be on the viability | :08:53. | :09:01.
of this latest round of test flights. | :09:02. | :09:04.
And finally, there's good news for poultry-keepers | :09:05. | :09:06.
after the Government's chief veterinary officer announced | :09:07. | :09:09.
bird flu restrictions are set to be lifted. | :09:10. | :09:13.
The rules introduced late last year meant poultry in high-risk areas, | :09:14. | :09:15.
including parts of our region, had to be housed indoors to reduce | :09:16. | :09:18.
the risk of them catching the disease from wild birds. | :09:19. | :09:21.
Now Defra says the restrictions will end on Thursday | :09:22. | :09:23.
Free range egg producers warned the move could put | :09:24. | :09:30.
Now the weather for the week ahead with Julie. | :09:31. | :09:32.
Well, apart from an isolated shower, tonight should be fine and dry | :09:33. | :09:35.
with some clear spells and a fairly chilly night for some of us. | :09:36. | :09:38.
Generally, temperatures down to around six or seven Celsius | :09:39. | :09:40.
but some spots could actually drop closer to freezing, around one | :09:41. | :09:44.
or two degrees and that could lead to a ground frost in some places | :09:45. | :09:48.
So a bit of a chilly start to the day but tomorrow is looking | :09:49. | :09:52.
fine and dry with variable amounts of cloud and some | :09:53. | :09:54.
Temperatures tomorrow around 14 Celsius, 57 Fahrenheit, | :09:55. | :09:57.
but the winds pick up in the afternoon to mainly moderate | :09:58. | :10:01.
west to south-westerly, so quite a blustery end to the day | :10:02. | :10:04.
and probably as we head towards tomorrow evening, | :10:05. | :10:08.
we may well see in increase in cloud too. | :10:09. | :10:10.
And then Wednesday, this weak front pushing down from the north, | :10:11. | :10:12.
so after a fine and dry start, eventually that front will introduce | :10:13. | :10:15.
thicker cloud and some outbreaks of mainly light and patchy rain, | :10:16. | :10:18.
so perhaps that rain not for everybody and quite | :10:19. | :10:20.
And then towards the end of the week, our weather influenced | :10:21. | :10:27.
by this weather front that is going to be moving rather | :10:28. | :10:30.
erratically towards us, and that is making it quite | :10:31. | :10:33.
difficult to pinpoint the detail when it comes | :10:34. | :10:35.
to the Easter weekend, but at the moment, Thursday | :10:36. | :10:37.
is looking largely dry, quite a lot of cloud around | :10:38. | :10:40.
with perhaps an isolated shower and then Good Friday for many of us | :10:41. | :10:43.
Some rain to the north at the moment is not set to move | :10:44. | :10:47.
through until quite late on in the day. | :10:48. | :10:49.
Now, in a moment, Matt will have the national | :10:50. | :10:51.
forecast but I will leave you with the outlook | :10:52. | :10:54.
We could have some rain early Saturday but that should clear | :10:55. | :10:57.
to leave a weekend of scattered showers but hopefully some | :10:58. | :11:00.
Good evening. Let's cut to the chase the first big holiday weekend of the | :11:01. | :11:18.
year is on the horizon and if you consider last weekend as a taster | :11:19. | :11:22.
for the summer, this weekend is not looking too bad. It will be a bit | :11:23. | :11:26.
cooler, temperatures this week and closer to where they should be at | :11:27. | :11:29.
this time of the year thanks to the north-west breed and the reason for | :11:30. | :11:34.
that, if we look at the jet stream, coming across the Atlantic pushing | :11:35. | :11:38.
from north to south -- north-west breeze. It separates the high | :11:39. | :11:44.
pressure and low price and it allows the northerly airflow to develop. It | :11:45. | :11:47.
means there will be some showers going into Easter weekend but they | :11:48. | :11:53.
will only be a small portion of the weekend wherever you are and there | :11:54. | :11:55.
will be some dry weather and when the sun is out, it is getting | :11:56. | :11:59.
stronger so it will negate some of the | :12:00. | :12:01. |
