Good evening. late news at 11pm.

:00:00.:00:16.

A 17-year-old boy has died and another has life

:00:17.:00:20.

The car they were in was being followed by a marked

:00:21.:00:27.

Flowers left at the scene of the crash.

:00:28.:00:30.

This is the junction of Southsea Avenue and Glendale Gardens,

:00:31.:00:34.

which was cordoned off for some time in the early hours as a specialist

:00:35.:00:39.

police team tried to piece together what had happened.

:00:40.:00:41.

There was a breakdown vehicle, four police cars, and at least

:00:42.:00:46.

They had cones and markers, you know, measuring.

:00:47.:00:50.

And they're going house-to-house to ask people what they'd heard

:00:51.:00:53.

Police say one of their unmarked vehicles had been following a

:00:54.:00:59.

maroon Ford Escort which had failed to stop.

:01:00.:01:04.

It reached this spot and collided with a silver BMW.

:01:05.:01:07.

The 17-year-old who died was in the Escort.

:01:08.:01:09.

Another teenager in the car the same age was critically hurt.

:01:10.:01:12.

Two other teenagers had minor injuries and were arrested.

:01:13.:01:14.

One on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and possessing

:01:15.:01:17.

class A drugs with intent to supply, the other on suspicion

:01:18.:01:19.

The case is being monitored by the Independent Police

:01:20.:01:29.

Complaints Commission, which said in a statement...

:01:30.:01:43.

It's hoped lung cancer could be detected and treated earlier thanks

:01:44.:01:46.

to new research taking place in this region.

:01:47.:01:49.

The University of East Anglia is looking a therapy

:01:50.:01:52.

It's being part-funded by a local charity.

:01:53.:01:59.

Sally Millsopp from Norfolk lost her mother to a rare lung cancer.

:02:00.:02:03.

Jennifer Earnshaw was a headteacher and breathed in asbestos

:02:04.:02:05.

Chemotherapy extended her life but couldn't save it.

:02:06.:02:12.

To be told there really is no treatment that is going to cure it

:02:13.:02:15.

and that it's really a case of, "Would you like this treatment

:02:16.:02:21.

"to sort of hopefully hold it back for a while?"

:02:22.:02:23.

It's just a horrible situation to be in.

:02:24.:02:27.

That's why photodynamic therapy is being studied.

:02:28.:02:30.

What happens is light-sensitive medication is injected

:02:31.:02:35.

into the patient, clinging to cancerous cells.

:02:36.:02:37.

A tube's then inserted with a laser on the end -

:02:38.:02:40.

the light reacts with the drug, killing the tumour.

:02:41.:02:44.

Researchers hope it could be an alternative to surgery.

:02:45.:02:49.

Surgery is very invasive because the lungs are

:02:50.:02:51.

A lot of people can't actually have surgical reception.

:02:52.:02:55.

The treatment's already used for some skin cancer patients.

:02:56.:02:58.

Now, the Norfolk PDT charity is funding research for lung cancer.

:02:59.:03:03.

This treatment's a long way off being approved.

:03:04.:03:05.

If successful, it would still have to go through clinical trials

:03:06.:03:09.

and all that could take around seven years.

:03:10.:03:12.

But if it works, it could transform the lives

:03:13.:03:14.

Nikki Fox, BBC Look East, in Norwich.

:03:15.:03:22.

Football now, and with a look at some of yesterday's

:03:23.:03:24.

A case of the Boxing Day blues for a sluggish Ipswich,

:03:25.:03:29.

Not for the first time this season, Ipswich were

:03:30.:03:34.

booed off at full-time by some home fans.

:03:35.:03:36.

Town have won just one of their last five league games.

:03:37.:03:39.

The pressure is mounting on Norwich manager Alex Neil, who

:03:40.:03:41.

watched his side slip to the eighth defeat in ten games

:03:42.:03:44.

But to make matters worse for Norwich,

:03:45.:03:48.

Jonny Howson was sent off for handling on the line.

:03:49.:03:51.

They have made it 11 games unbeaten now after beating Wimbledon 3-0,

:03:52.:03:55.

Their reward is a place in the play-off places

:03:56.:04:04.

Mark Richards scored the winner four minutes into stoppage time.

:04:05.:04:09.

Peterborough drew 1-1 with Gillingham after

:04:10.:04:11.

Lee Angol's late goal was snuffed out by the visitors on 90 minutes.

:04:12.:04:14.

It means Posh slip out of the top six.

:04:15.:04:17.

Elsewhere, MK Dons lost 1-0 at home to Charlton.

:04:18.:04:20.

In League Two, Luton, in fifth, were beaten 1-0 by a

:04:21.:04:23.

resurgent Colchester, who have gone five games unbeaten now.

:04:24.:04:27.

Craig Slater with the Colchester winner seven minutes from time.

:04:28.:04:31.

And Cambridge won 2-1 at Stevenage to hold onto their berth

:04:32.:04:34.

Leon Legge gave them the lead before

:04:35.:04:37.

It was heading for a point apiece when Piero Mingoia

:04:38.:04:42.

grabbed the winner for Cambridge eight minutes from time.

:04:43.:04:44.

It is going to turn increasingly cloudy. Cold temperatures as well.

:04:45.:05:08.

Clear skies at the moment but temperatures dropping below

:05:09.:05:11.

freezing. Widespread mist and fog through the night. Down at minus

:05:12.:05:16.

three minus four by first thing tomorrow. A misty and faulty start

:05:17.:05:21.

from many of us. Our sun, this will linger. It is expected to be a cold

:05:22.:05:28.

day. We may not get beyond three Celsius by the afternoon. A similar

:05:29.:05:33.

pattern for Thursday. That mist and fog reforms on Wednesday night,

:05:34.:05:37.

lingering through much of Thursday. Another cold they expected. Here is

:05:38.:05:42.

the outlook. Pretty unchanging, with a lot cloud around. Cold days but

:05:43.:05:47.

milder for the weekend. Chilly nights bringing further frost.

:05:48.:05:51.

Good evening. It's a wintry night out there. Temperatures as low as

:05:52.:06:13.

minus three in one or two places already. For some of us the frost

:06:14.:06:17.

never shifted all day long. This shot was taken in Somerset. Tonight,

:06:18.:06:26.

some frost free places in Scotland. Fog will develop as we work through

:06:27.:06:31.

the night. It becomes wide spread. That's the issue in the morning,

:06:32.:06:34.

disruption certainly possible with a lot of people on the move. Check out

:06:35.:06:38.

local radio stations for the latest updates. Warnings in force from the

:06:39.:06:44.

Met Office. Parts of south-west Wales and England seeing early

:06:45.:06:47.

sunshine. Generally a lot of freezing fog around, which will be

:06:48.:06:49.

hard to shift through the

:06:50.:06:51.
