Hello and welcome to the Look East late news. | :00:11. | :00:13.
In the programme tonight: Norwich South MP Clive Lewis resigns | :00:14. | :00:15.
from the Shadow cabinet and votes against Article 50. | :00:16. | :00:17.
Long delays on the A12 after a lorry crashes off a bridge in Essex. | :00:18. | :00:22.
I saw this lorry hit the barrier on the breach and all the metal | :00:23. | :00:29.
railings were just flying off -- bridge. | :00:30. | :00:32.
And the latest from the trial of a man accused of murdering | :00:33. | :00:35.
the Suffolk couple, Peter and Sylvia Stuart. | :00:36. | :00:42.
The Labour MP for Norwich South, Clive Lewis, | :00:43. | :00:47.
has tonight resigned from the shadow cabinet. | :00:48. | :00:48.
He stepped down as business spokesman just minutes before voting | :00:49. | :00:51.
against Article 50 - the bill which will start | :00:52. | :00:53.
the process for us to leave the European Union. | :00:54. | :00:55.
He said he owed it to his constituents | :00:56. | :00:57.
Let's go to Westminster and join our political | :00:58. | :01:00.
Most MPs in our region voted for Article 50, the exceptions were the | :01:01. | :01:17.
Liberal Democrat Norman Lamb and Clive Lewis who voted against. | :01:18. | :01:22.
Official labour policy tonight was to accept that the majority of | :01:23. | :01:25.
people in Britain voted to leave -- Labour. And therefore Article 50 | :01:26. | :01:30.
should be supported, but Clive Lewis could not do it. | :01:31. | :01:33.
This is something Clive Lewis has been agonising over | :01:34. | :01:35.
This morning, as he left his home, he was still struggling | :01:36. | :01:39.
It's my intention to do what's right by my constituents and my conscience | :01:40. | :01:43.
and whatever that takes, and also I have to think | :01:44. | :01:46.
It's a really tough call and I think lots of MPs are having a tough time | :01:47. | :01:53.
An MP for less than two years, Clive Lewis had already become | :01:54. | :01:57.
a leading member of the Shadow Cabinet. | :01:58. | :01:59.
Often talked about as a future party leader. | :02:00. | :02:04.
He was also a key member of the Labour in campaign | :02:05. | :02:07.
and with 56% of Norwich voting to stay, he felt that he had | :02:08. | :02:11.
It could put me out of a job in the Shadow Cabinet. | :02:12. | :02:15.
I have to be clear here, I came into politics to make | :02:16. | :02:18.
a difference but also I have a conscience. | :02:19. | :02:20.
As MPs began to vote tonight he issued a statement which said: | :02:21. | :02:31.
This is a blow to the career of someone who has been seen | :02:32. | :02:34.
Tonight Jeremy Corbyn called him an asset to the party and said | :02:35. | :02:41.
he looked forward to working with him again in the future. | :02:42. | :02:44.
Well, he is now a backbencher and he has no special responsibilities and | :02:45. | :02:54.
he will fade from the limelight, but it is interesting, how nice Jeremy | :02:55. | :02:58.
Corbyn was about him in the resignation statement. I ran into | :02:59. | :03:02.
Jeremy Corbyn early this afternoon and he said Clive is a lovely man, | :03:03. | :03:11.
and he didn't want to destroy him. I wonder if his exiles to the | :03:12. | :03:14.
backbenches will not last for very long. | :03:15. | :03:15.
But many of our MPs must be happy tonight that Brexit has | :03:16. | :03:18.
Many of our MPs have been campaigning for many years to leave | :03:19. | :03:25.
the EU, and there were a lot of smiles around Westminster when the | :03:26. | :03:28.
bill went through. It's been a long march | :03:29. | :03:31.
to get to this moment, to get the political establishment | :03:32. | :03:36.
here in Westminster to agree to They now agree to that and we now | :03:37. | :03:38.
need to get on with it. We've started on the journey, but | :03:39. | :03:48.
they still very long way to go. Thanks for joining us. The -- there | :03:49. | :03:55.
is still a very long way to go. Next tonight there've been major | :03:56. | :04:00.
delays on the A12 tonight after a lorry crashed off a bridge | :04:01. | :04:02.
onto the Southbound carriageway. The accident happened | :04:03. | :04:05.
at about 4pm afternoon. The emergency services, | :04:06. | :04:07.
including five fire crews Our chief reporter Kim Riley | :04:08. | :04:09.
is close to the scene now. We are on the bridge from which the | :04:10. | :04:17.
lorry fell this afternoon down the steep bank towards the southbound | :04:18. | :04:21.
carriageway of the A12, the roof of the cab ripped off, and we have no | :04:22. | :04:25.
information yet on the condition of the driver. BBC Essex spoke to one | :04:26. | :04:29.
eyewitness. I've come round the bend and I can't | :04:30. | :04:34.
believe what I was seeing. I saw this lorry hit the barrier | :04:35. | :04:37.
on the bridge and all the metal railings were just flying | :04:38. | :04:40.
off like anything. The recovery operation has been | :04:41. | :04:51.
hampered by hazardous materials on the lorry, the lorry burst into | :04:52. | :04:55.
flames and that had to be put out. This is the divisional officer. | :04:56. | :04:58.
The articulated lorry was carrying an uninterrupted power supply, | :04:59. | :05:00.
a large number of lead acid batteries as well as computer | :05:01. | :05:03.
We need to get the vehicle off the embankment. | :05:04. | :05:07.
However, it's still an unstable situation. | :05:08. | :05:09.
With small pockets of fire remaining. | :05:10. | :05:12.
We can't access the container itself because of its unstable position. | :05:13. | :05:18.
The recovery operation is expected to take some time and it hasn't | :05:19. | :05:25.
really started and it is expected that this section of the southbound | :05:26. | :05:29.
A12 will remain closed through tomorrow's rush-hour. Thanks for | :05:30. | :05:33.
joining us. The trial of a man accused | :05:34. | :05:35.
of killing a couple from Suffolk has been told blood from the husband | :05:36. | :05:39.
and hair from the wife were found The body of Peter Stuart was found | :05:40. | :05:42.
in a stream near his home The body of his wife Sylvia | :05:43. | :05:46.
has never been found. Alex Dunlop has been | :05:47. | :05:55.
at Ipswich Crown Court. On day two of this trial, | :05:56. | :05:59.
the daughter and son-in-law of the Stuarts, Christy | :06:00. | :06:01.
and Stephen Paxman gave evidence. Wiping away tears, Christy Paxman | :06:02. | :06:08.
told the court how she had alerted the police after her parents had | :06:09. | :06:11.
failed to turn up for Hours later her father's | :06:12. | :06:14.
body was found. Listening through an Albanian | :06:15. | :06:16.
interpreter the defendant, wearing a grey T-shirt, | :06:17. | :06:18.
listened intently The last time Peter | :06:19. | :06:19.
and Sylvia Stuart were seen was in Goody's farm shop | :06:20. | :06:27.
near their home. Peter's body was found five | :06:28. | :06:29.
days later in a stream close by their remote | :06:30. | :06:34.
cottage in Weybread. The 75 year old had been | :06:35. | :06:36.
repeatedly stabbed. Sylvia's body has never | :06:37. | :06:38.
been found but police The following day the prosecution | :06:39. | :06:40.
say the defendant fled to France, Forensic officers examined it | :06:41. | :06:45.
and on the driver's door they found blood which matched Peter Stuart's | :06:46. | :06:50.
DNA profile and in the boot they found human hair | :06:51. | :06:55.
which matched the profile They say the defendant's | :06:56. | :06:57.
fingerprints were found on the driver's door | :06:58. | :07:02.
and on a plastic Identity is a key | :07:03. | :07:04.
issue in this case. The man in the dock, | :07:05. | :07:07.
who was extradited from Luxembourg to face trial, claims he is not | :07:08. | :07:11.
Ali Qazimaj but Vital Dapi. He says he has never | :07:12. | :07:14.
visited the United Kingdom. But the prosecution | :07:15. | :07:16.
say that's not true. British police already had | :07:17. | :07:19.
a record of his fingerprints after he had previously been | :07:20. | :07:22.
arrested sometime before. Another witness, Christy Paxman's | :07:23. | :07:27.
88-year-old father-in-law Sidney Paxman, told the court | :07:28. | :07:31.
that the defendant had been his carer in South Essex | :07:32. | :07:34.
and knew him as Ali. He said the day Peter Stuart's body | :07:35. | :07:37.
was found, Ali seemed agitated and told him he had | :07:38. | :07:39.
done something bad. But pressed by the defence team, | :07:40. | :07:48.
he said it was probably a reference to the fact that Ali had | :07:49. | :07:51.
just quit his day job. The defendant pleads not | :07:52. | :07:54.
guilty to double murder. Alex Dunlop, BBC Look East | :07:55. | :07:56.
at Ipswich Crown Court. A third of people living in this | :07:57. | :07:59.
region are over the age of 65. And that presents a huge | :08:00. | :08:02.
challenge for social care, our Health reporter Nikki Fox has | :08:03. | :08:07.
been to the market town of Swaffham in Norfolk - | :08:08. | :08:09.
where they are trying something new by reorganising | :08:10. | :08:12.
how care is delivered. Sandra Webb's been | :08:13. | :08:16.
a carer for 13 years. You have that one first and then | :08:17. | :08:20.
you chew the other one after. A former champion greyhound trainer, | :08:21. | :08:28.
the 88-year-old has For a lot of people you're the only | :08:29. | :08:30.
person they see all-day. It makes such a difference, | :08:31. | :08:36.
even half an hour with someone can They're on their own | :08:37. | :08:38.
the rest of that time. Agencies in Swaffham | :08:39. | :08:41.
were working separately, now they have formed a scheme | :08:42. | :08:48.
called Swaffham Cares. Sharing clients when short-staffed | :08:49. | :08:50.
and recruiting together. Care homes also provide services | :08:51. | :08:56.
for the wider community. She can go shopping or something, | :08:57. | :09:00.
while I'm out of the way. They are also telling doctors | :09:01. | :09:22.
and nurses about their services. GPs and social workers should | :09:23. | :09:25.
be out there advising people what's available, | :09:26. | :09:29.
meeting their needs, pointing them in | :09:30. | :09:30.
the right direction. This is going to help? | :09:31. | :09:34.
Hugely, absolutely. If we work collectively | :09:35. | :09:37.
under this umbrella, because it's not happening | :09:38. | :09:40.
at the moment. What Swaffham is doing is obvious, | :09:41. | :09:44.
getting social care working together within a town, | :09:45. | :09:47.
but it's not being done elsewhere. And a time when everything | :09:48. | :09:53.
is stretched is a time The cold wintry weather is setting | :09:54. | :10:11.
in over the next few days, temperatures dropping lower tonight, | :10:12. | :10:14.
and the risk of wintry showers for coastal areas as we go through the | :10:15. | :10:18.
night. Private Eye widely down to freezing and possibly a couple of | :10:19. | :10:23.
degrees below -- temperatures widely down. The pressure set up shows the | :10:24. | :10:30.
huge area of high pressure across Scandinavia and that will block any | :10:31. | :10:34.
weather systems from the Atlantic. We have a cold easterly wind which | :10:35. | :10:39.
will press on through the day and feel bitterly cold and that will | :10:40. | :10:43.
also bring showers from the North Sea, and the showers could move | :10:44. | :10:47.
further west. They are likely to be quite wintry, they might give a | :10:48. | :10:51.
dusting of snow in places. The risk of icy patches, temperatures no | :10:52. | :10:59.
higher than 2 degrees. This is the outlook, staying wintry | :11:00. | :11:02.
cloudy and Ben Rich will take you through the bigger picture. | :11:03. | :11:08.
Good evening. Over the next few days I suspect it's going to feel like we | :11:09. | :11:14.
have been plunged into the deep freeze. Cold weather on the way and | :11:15. | :11:21.
not necessarily crisp cold weather, with blue | :11:22. | :11:22. |
