Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North.

:00:00.:00:07.

The headlines tonight: An East Yorkshire MP blames

:00:08.:00:10.

cycle lanes for causing pollution and congestion.

:00:11.:00:19.

On your bike is the polite message from cycle campaigners to Sir Greg

:00:20.:00:25.

Knight tonight. The engineering companies trying

:00:26.:00:28.

to employ more women. Our factory job is not a man's job.

:00:29.:00:34.

Nowhere near. Caught on camera -

:00:35.:00:40.

the archive film showing how Hull New found fame - the schoolboy

:00:41.:00:42.

who carried his injured friend over the finish line

:00:43.:00:46.

of a cross country race. We are living the dream. We could

:00:47.:01:04.

make a movie! Sunshine today. Will it last? Join me for the forecast.

:01:05.:01:10.

Too many cycle lanes are causing an increase in traffic

:01:11.:01:12.

congestion and pollution in our towns and cities.

:01:13.:01:14.

That is the view of the East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight

:01:15.:01:17.

who says too much of the highway is being turned over to cycle lanes

:01:18.:01:21.

causing traffic to slow down which increases emissions

:01:22.:01:22.

Cycling groups say his comments are simply wrong.

:01:23.:01:25.

Caroline Bilton is live in Cottingham near Hull tonight.

:01:26.:01:28.

How have Sir Greg Knight's comments been received by cyclists today?

:01:29.:01:49.

Well, let's face it. The road travel between cyclists and motorists has

:01:50.:01:58.

been fraught for some time. I'm afraid these comments today have

:01:59.:02:01.

done nothing to smooth over those cracks. There are over 500 miles of

:02:02.:02:07.

cycle lanes in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. This is one of them.

:02:08.:02:12.

Abroad adapted to make it easier for cyclists to get from A to B. You can

:02:13.:02:21.

look at this in one of two weighs. To encourage people to leave their

:02:22.:02:25.

cars at home and get on their bikes, or, as Sir Greg Knight sees it, a

:02:26.:02:27.

cause for congestion. The start of the Tour De Yorkshire

:02:28.:02:38.

two years ago in Bridlington, an event that has helped boost

:02:39.:02:42.

the popularity of cycling with thousands more now taking

:02:43.:02:44.

to the saddle as a result and it's led to councils investing

:02:45.:02:47.

heavily in improving The East Riding for example

:02:48.:02:49.

spending more than ?8 But one East Riding MP,

:02:50.:02:53.

who's constituency town of Bridlington will once again be

:02:54.:02:55.

hosting the Tour de Yorkshire this year, is calling for cycle lanes

:02:56.:02:58.

to be scrapped to make way for cars. Is there not a case for making local

:02:59.:03:02.

authorities in future take into account the congestion effects

:03:03.:03:05.

of their crusade to improve road space in favour of wider

:03:06.:03:07.

pavements and cycle lanes. Followers of Greg Knight

:03:08.:03:10.

on Twitter will see he's He chairs the Parliamentary

:03:11.:03:13.

Historic Vehicles Group. One might say he's

:03:14.:03:15.

a bit of petrol head. He believes cycle lanes

:03:16.:03:18.

cause congestion, adding If we had more cycle lanes,

:03:19.:03:19.

there'll be more cyclists out there There would not be the congestion

:03:20.:03:26.

and the pollution. It comes just weeks after Hull

:03:27.:03:31.

was found to be breaching pollution limits, a problem that is linked

:03:32.:03:34.

to around 40,000 deaths But for cyclists in the city

:03:35.:03:38.

today removing cycle I think his comments

:03:39.:03:43.

are a load of rubbish. I don't think they

:03:44.:03:48.

should be scrapped. There is a bigger picture and it

:03:49.:03:51.

needs to be addressed in general why there is a lot of traffic

:03:52.:03:55.

in the city centre. Make it freer for the bigger

:03:56.:03:57.

vehicles to move about. Cycling campaigners claim cars

:03:58.:04:07.

create ten times the amount of carbon dioxide as bikes for every

:04:08.:04:12.

kilometres travelled. In Denmark, the average person cycles 600 miles

:04:13.:04:18.

per year, compared to 46 miles in the UK. It's claimed pollution in

:04:19.:04:23.

Europe could be reduced by a quarter if everyone cycled as much as they

:04:24.:04:31.

did in Denmark. We are a long way off of reaching the cycle utopia of

:04:32.:04:32.

Denmark, but. the Government says it intends

:04:33.:04:39.

to invest 300 million in improving Mr Knight may find his suggestion

:04:40.:04:44.

struggles to get the green light. The consensus from those I've spoken

:04:45.:04:54.

to today is we should be investing more money into cycle highways,

:04:55.:04:58.

certainly not giving motorists encouragement to stay in their

:04:59.:05:02.

cards. Thank you.

:05:03.:05:04.

We would like to hear from you on this story,

:05:05.:05:07.

Would we be better off with out cycle lanes?

:05:08.:05:10.

Maybe you are a cyclist and want to be in touch?

:05:11.:05:45.

A man has been airlifted to hospital with serious

:05:46.:05:47.

injuries following a crash on the A1 near Newark.

:05:48.:05:49.

Nottinghamshire Police say six vehicles were

:05:50.:05:51.

involved in the collision which happened earlier.

:05:52.:05:53.

The A1 southbound carriageway has re-opened, but the northbound

:05:54.:05:55.

side will remain closed until 8pm tonight.

:05:56.:06:09.

The Conservative MP for Cleethorpes says he won't rule out a vote

:06:10.:06:12.

against the government over changes to National insurance

:06:13.:06:14.

Plans to raise contributions for self employed workers were announced

:06:15.:06:17.

Martin Vickers says he won't be disappointed if the budget

:06:18.:06:20.

I'm not going to commit myself as yet because I've not had a chance to

:06:21.:06:26.

discuss it with the minister, but I am concerned about the hit on the

:06:27.:06:31.

self-employed. The Conservative Party have always prided themselves

:06:32.:06:34.

in being the party of business and of the small business man in

:06:35.:06:36.

particular. And you can hear that full

:06:37.:06:39.

interview with Martin Vickers on our late programme tonight

:06:40.:06:41.

on BBC one at 10:30pm. ?30 million of Government money

:06:42.:06:59.

is to be invested in improving roads and supporting

:07:00.:07:02.

businesses in Lincolnshire. The money will be used to build

:07:03.:07:03.

a new centre for health science and also engineering research

:07:04.:07:06.

at the University of Lincoln. It will be run by Siemens

:07:12.:07:13.

in thefts and vandalism. Shop owners on Bailgate claim

:07:50.:07:53.

for improved CCTV coverage. It does appear to be the case that

:07:54.:08:00.

every time something happens, the CCTV, without fail,

:08:01.:08:03.

was pointing in the wrong direction. I actually wonder whether it points

:08:04.:08:05.

in any direction apart There is one camera

:08:06.:08:07.

and it faces down there. Unfortunately, we are a bit exposed,

:08:08.:08:15.

as are the other shops. The Council says the CCTV

:08:16.:08:20.

is in good working order. The CCTV is due to be upgraded

:08:21.:08:22.

over the next few months and we are looking at options

:08:23.:08:25.

to increase coverage. Although this will be subject

:08:26.:08:28.

to finances and we can't commit to any specific expansion areas

community support officer for the Bailgate area,

:08:46.:09:01.

so we try and patrol the area as much as we can but,

:09:02.:09:03.

obviously, with limited resources, there is only so much

we can achieve. Officers say they've yet catch

her. Not enough women are applying

:10:25.:10:27.

for jobs in manufacturing and engineering according to some

:10:28.:10:29.

of our area's leading employers. There are double the number of jobs

available in those industries in the Humber region compared

:11:44.:11:50.

meter feat of engineering will inspire women to attend

:11:51.:11:54.

a special event this weekend. There are lots of fabulous women who

:11:55.:12:00.

have fabulous careers. But we don't always see them. The event is to

:12:01.:12:04.

showcase them and let them talk to the ladies and the roles of Hol and

:12:05.:12:12.

show them what great jobs we do. -- Hull.

:12:13.:12:16.

Kirsty Clode Holly who's a student at Refrigeration

:12:17.:12:18.

and Air Conditioning company Airco is proof that events do work.

:12:19.:12:25.

I went to an event today. I used to think manufacturing was a male kind

:12:26.:12:34.

of thing, not for girls. And I absolutely love it.

:12:35.:12:39.

The company actively promotes what they do in schools

:12:40.:12:41.

It is not male dominated. Ladies are encouraged here and in lots of big

:12:42.:12:54.

companies. It is a sea change and I think that is really important.

:12:55.:13:01.

So as opportunities grow is hoped a new generation of women

DNO, when I was at school, physics and maths were my favourite

:13:16.:13:27.

subjects. -- do you know. My physics teacher said that she thought it

:13:28.:13:34.

would be a good environment for me. There was not an engineering

:13:35.:13:39.

programme at my all girl school. I hit the books, I went to the library

:13:40.:13:44.

and read into engineering. I thought it sounded like the thing for me.

:13:45.:13:49.

Then I decided to join the air force. We have just heard from a

:13:50.:13:54.

woman at Siemens Saint when she was at school she was told to go into

:13:55.:13:59.

waitressing or photography and engineering is not a role for women.

:14:00.:14:06.

What should schools be doing? Do you know what, in many jobs, there are

:14:07.:14:13.

so many rolls out there. Listen to people is advice, but if you want to

:14:14.:14:17.

do something, go for it. Nobody should tell you what you can or

:14:18.:14:22.

cannot do. It is up to you. Maybe you want to be a waitress or an air

:14:23.:14:28.

hose test, an engineer, doctor or dentist. It doesn't matter. Do what

:14:29.:14:32.

you want to do. Engineering is for me. I like fixing things and I like

:14:33.:14:44.

physics. So I went for it. What would you say to girls at school

:14:45.:14:46.

watching the TV tonight regarding engineering as a career? Just go for

:14:47.:14:50.

it. Find out as much as you can. For me, engineering in the military was

:14:51.:14:55.

what I wanted to do, so I joined the Air Cadets. I spoke to engineers and

:14:56.:15:01.

find out what it was like. That is how I got into it. I went to

:15:02.:15:05.

university to study engineering and then I joined the air force when I

:15:06.:15:12.

left. Tremendous story. Thank you for telling us all about it. Thank

you, Peter. Still ahead tonight: The film

:15:50.:16:04.

David, thank you. Regarding the five day forecast, Roy wrote to me this

:16:05.:16:09.

morning. If Paul Hudson gives a five-day accurate forecast, why

:16:10.:16:13.

don't we all may have to suffer him every fifth day? I think many people

:16:14.:16:18.

would go along with that. I think you'll find many people

:16:19.:16:23.

would like me to be on five days a week.

:16:24.:16:34.

Let's have the forecast... The headline for the next 24 hours.

:16:35.:16:42.

Not the sunny skies of today, it will cloud over from the West

:16:43.:16:47.

through the course of tomorrow. Let's look at this week warm front

:16:48.:16:50.

which will bring a band of cloud eastwards after what should be

:16:51.:16:55.

bright start with some sunshine. Saturday, cloudy and some patchy

:16:56.:17:01.

rain southwards. A good deal of dry weather to come on Saturday as well.

:17:02.:17:08.

Absolutely stunning out there with blue skies and sunshine. As we head

:17:09.:17:13.

through the course of this evening, little will change. The wind will

:17:14.:17:20.

continue to ease. Falling light overnight. There will be a ground

:17:21.:17:24.

frost in rural locations, particularly in East Yorkshire.

:17:25.:17:28.

Three or four or five. A bright start with some sunshine in

:17:29.:17:46.

the morning. Gradually clouding over from the West. The afternoon looks

:17:47.:17:53.

pretty cloudy. The emphasis is on a good deal of dry weather. Looking at

:17:54.:17:59.

the top temperatures, just a light southerly breeze and we look at

:18:00.:18:04.

highs of about ten or 11 degrees. Ten for Grimsby. Another fairly

:18:05.:18:10.

cloudy day on Saturday. The risk of some patchy rain on Sunday, but dry

:18:11.:18:16.

and bright spells. Peter! That is your forecast. Neill says there are

:18:17.:18:27.

five hours left, not four hours. Peter, I think you need to get out a

:18:28.:18:33.

bit more, don't you? Let's not upset people.

:18:34.:18:41.

Some of the best moving images captured in Hull

:18:42.:18:43.

over the last 100 years, by both amateurs and professionals,

:18:44.:18:45.

will be shown on the big screen for the first time.

:18:46.:18:48.

"Hull on Film" has been described as a "fascinating

:18:49.:18:50.

Graham Relton is from the Yorkshire Film Archive and has

:18:51.:18:54.

been showing our reporter Jill Archbold some of the footage.

:18:55.:19:05.

This is the earliest footage we will show. Everyday life from 1900.

:19:06.:19:13.

People coming home from work. The Park. It was made by early pioneers

:19:14.:19:21.

of the moving image. Did try to get as many people on film as possible

:19:22.:19:26.

and the charge people a small fee to see themselves on the silver screen.

:19:27.:19:33.

This piece of footage takes us through to the 1940s and the Second

:19:34.:19:38.

World War. It's quite poignant we look back at the devastation, the

:19:39.:19:42.

bombing and the blitz of 1941. Then we see the celebrations and however

:19:43.:19:50.

they came together to mark VE Day. Do you think film-makers at this

:19:51.:19:54.

time knew they were documenting such a momentous day? This was a film

:19:55.:20:00.

maker from Beverley cold Ernest. He made newsreels. I think he had an

:20:01.:20:04.

eye on the future and he knew what he was capturing. We couldn't do a

:20:05.:20:09.

film show about the city of Hull without looking at the fishing

:20:10.:20:12.

industry. A rich industry going back many hundreds of years. I love these

:20:13.:20:23.

images of the barbarous, who had to duck out of the way of the swinging

:20:24.:20:27.

baskets. That's how they got their name. At long last, the River Humber

:20:28.:20:37.

will have a bridge. It is incredible to see the operation. The

:20:38.:20:40.

foundations and the building of the towers. We don't want people to

:20:41.:20:44.

watch these films in silence. Talk about your memories. Maybe you will

:20:45.:20:50.

recognise family members and ancestors. We want people to come

:20:51.:20:54.

forward and identify the people in these films.

:20:55.:20:57.

And if you want to see "Hull on Film" - it will be

screened at the VUE cinema in Princes Quay next month.
