Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. | :00:16. | :00:17.
East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire MPs say they're ready | :00:18. | :00:35.
to fight a general election, that's taken many by surprise. | :00:36. | :00:40.
I don't think the opposition is as strong as it could be. | :00:41. | :00:43.
But West Hull's Labour MP, Alan Johnson, who was once | :00:44. | :00:46.
the Home Secretary says he's standing down. | :00:47. | :00:48.
Testing for a disease which has seen a quarter | :00:49. | :00:50.
of a million cattle culled - now there are fears TB could affect | :00:51. | :00:53.
Lincoln City on the brink of getting back in the league - | :00:54. | :00:57.
I have just been handed smaller daffodils because this goes right | :00:58. | :01:07.
round the block and back. And why hundreds of people queued | :01:08. | :01:10.
to pick daffodils made of Lego. Join me for the broadcast. -- | :01:11. | :01:15.
forecast. Theresa May's decision to call | :01:16. | :01:22.
a snap general election has prompted one of our most high profile MPs | :01:23. | :01:25.
to call time on his Alan Johnson - who's represented | :01:26. | :01:28.
Hull West and Hessle for 20 years - says he's stepping down to "do other | :01:29. | :01:36.
things with his life". And East Yorkshire and | :01:37. | :01:40.
Lincolnshire's politicians from all sides say they're ready | :01:41. | :01:42.
to fight the election which will We'll be hearing from Alan Johnson | :01:43. | :01:45.
in a moment but first our Political Editor Tim Iredale | :01:46. | :01:49.
is in his constituency tonight. Was Mr Johnson's decision | :01:50. | :01:51.
to step down a surprise? No one goes on for ever, that is a | :01:52. | :02:05.
point made by Alan Johnson in a letter to local Labour Party members | :02:06. | :02:11.
today. He said he was faced with a choice of stepping down our Carling | :02:12. | :02:15.
until the next potential election in 2022 when he will be into his 70s so | :02:16. | :02:19.
it means that one of the most popular figures at Westminster is | :02:20. | :02:23.
leaving the political stage. But that is just what happens. New | :02:24. | :02:29.
faces, and old faces go. That is the nature of elections. | :02:30. | :02:33.
He's the former postman who stamped his authority on some | :02:34. | :02:35.
of the biggest jobs in politics, including education, | :02:36. | :02:37.
But today Alan Johnson's constituents in Hessle were reacting | :02:38. | :02:41.
to the news that the man who's represented them in Parliament | :02:42. | :02:43.
I think he has got a lot of integrity and experience I think | :02:44. | :02:55.
it's been good for the area. Hopefully he will take this place | :02:56. | :03:01.
will do just as good a job. -- awfully who takes his place. He has | :03:02. | :03:10.
always been there. He has a hard act to follow. | :03:11. | :03:12.
Theresa May's decision to seek a snap general election came | :03:13. | :03:14.
And opinion is divided on whether it s the right thing to do. | :03:15. | :03:21.
This feels like a Prime Minister who was not in control and has no | :03:22. | :03:27.
security on positions on Brexit in particular and why she has taken as | :03:28. | :03:30.
drastic decision to put the country into a period of flats again. I | :03:31. | :03:34.
think having a Government that has a five-year mandate to dig through | :03:35. | :03:38.
negotiations and a new global agreements after these included is | :03:39. | :03:41.
good for our region and provides stability we absolutely required. | :03:42. | :03:43.
Out of the 17 constituencies in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire - | :03:44. | :03:46.
12 are held by the Conservatives and five are held by Labour. | :03:47. | :03:49.
Lincoln traditionally sees a closely fought battle battle | :03:50. | :03:56.
And many eyes will on Boston and Skegness - an area which saw | :03:57. | :04:01.
the highest vote in favour of leaving the EU. | :04:02. | :04:06.
The people of Hull voted massively in the 2014 elections and in the | :04:07. | :04:21.
referendum. We have a strong following there and in Great Grimsby | :04:22. | :04:27.
and other Labour areas. The Liberal Democrats are stronger than we've | :04:28. | :04:31.
ever been. I party membership has doubled. This dereliction is | :04:32. | :04:35.
happening now because there's such a weak and divided Labour opposition. | :04:36. | :04:41.
Before any general election election can take place - | :04:42. | :04:43.
two thirds of MPs must support Theresa May's proposal. | :04:44. | :04:48.
The fixed term Parliaments act was passed in 2011 so the 2050 election | :04:49. | :04:54.
was the first under the provision of the act and other its provision in | :04:55. | :04:59.
the next election was scheduled for 2020. -- the 2015 election. There | :05:00. | :05:09.
will be an election on the 8th of June. | :05:10. | :05:10.
So the date is almost set for the second general election | :05:11. | :05:12.
With parts of Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire becoming key | :05:13. | :05:16.
It sounds like most MPs any Yorkshire and Lancashire were back | :05:17. | :05:28.
Theresa May and support an election when it comes the House of Commons | :05:29. | :05:32.
for tomorrow. But a lot of the political parties across our area | :05:33. | :05:35.
have even selected candidates to stand in the selection because they | :05:36. | :05:39.
didn't think would be placed in 2020 so that will be a bit of a | :05:40. | :05:42.
last-minute scramble taking place to get those crucial names on the | :05:43. | :05:45.
ballot papers. It sounds like Theresa May is as announcement today | :05:46. | :05:49.
has got everyone by surprise but maybe that was a intention. | :05:50. | :05:54.
I'm joined form Westminster by Alan Johnson. | :05:55. | :05:58.
A lot of your supporters will be gutted tonight. Have you had enough? | :05:59. | :06:07.
Tim talked about old faces blown a new faces coming. Nothing goes on | :06:08. | :06:11.
forever and it's been an absolute pleasure and privilege to represent | :06:12. | :06:24.
Hull West and hassle for 20 years. -- Hessle. It surprised everyone but | :06:25. | :06:31.
it meant that I had to make the decision. I feel sorry for my staff. | :06:32. | :06:38.
It means they lose their job as well. But you can't go on forever | :06:39. | :06:46.
and I'm coming up 67 and I don't want to it on to my 70s, pleasure | :06:47. | :06:53.
though it is to be talking to you. Watching Labour getting so well | :06:54. | :06:56.
beaten in 2015 I remember the look on your face. Could you not pay to | :06:57. | :07:00.
watch that again in seven weeks' time? We won handsomely in Hull an | :07:01. | :07:11.
three Hull had incredible left in the majorities. In politics and | :07:12. | :07:15.
democracy governments change. We were in power for 13 years and I had | :07:16. | :07:19.
11 years as a Government minister which was great. That is behind me | :07:20. | :07:26.
now. The people decide in a democracy and I hope they decide to | :07:27. | :07:29.
back Labour who are doing great things in Hull. Just talking | :07:30. | :07:37.
generally, labour are 20 points behind at the polls and has not been | :07:38. | :07:41.
this bad since the 80s. Do think it could be turned around or is that | :07:42. | :07:44.
pure fantasy with the leader like this? And can be turned around and I | :07:45. | :07:51.
think for Theresa May there is an issue here. Integrity. She said just | :07:52. | :07:56.
a few weeks ago it might be in my entries to go to the country but it | :07:57. | :07:59.
would be in the interest of the country. She actually said that and | :08:00. | :08:04.
we had a general election 2015 and we had the EU referendum in 2016 and | :08:05. | :08:08.
I putting this to a general election three years before one was due, I | :08:09. | :08:13.
think she might pay a price for that, actually. I would not be | :08:14. | :08:16.
surprised if she paid the price for that because it is reminiscent of | :08:17. | :08:20.
Gordon Brown. He suffered a terrible blow by not keeping that integrity | :08:21. | :08:30.
of what he told the voters. Apart from talking to me, what will you | :08:31. | :08:36.
not to mess about being an MP? -- mess. Nothing at all. I loved the | :08:37. | :08:46.
constituency surgeries and it was a privilege for being let into | :08:47. | :08:49.
people's lives to help resolve the problems. I can't actually think of | :08:50. | :08:55.
a single thing. It's a great job and I enjoy doing it. I'm sure we will | :08:56. | :08:59.
have a celebration knew the time. Very good to talk to you tonight. -- | :09:00. | :09:03.
neither the time. Let us know what you think | :09:04. | :09:06.
about having a General Election What's the main issue on your mind | :09:07. | :09:08.
as the campaigning begins. Is the Conservative lead | :09:09. | :09:14.
in the polls unassailable or can Do we need the election? Maybe | :09:15. | :09:30.
you'll change your mind is on Brexit since the summer. We will have some | :09:31. | :09:35.
tweets for you and your meals before we finish. -- e-mails. We will have | :09:36. | :09:46.
more on the story it had past ten on the second programme. I will be | :09:47. | :09:49.
talking to the wayward MP Diana Johnson. -- Labour MP Diana Johnson. | :09:50. | :09:58.
Hull could soon see fewer people collecting for charity | :09:59. | :10:00.
The City Council may soon require so-called "chuggers" | :10:01. | :10:03.
to apply for a temporary licence, which would be restricted | :10:04. | :10:05.
In practice it would make it much harder for charities to stop | :10:06. | :10:09.
This is like the equivalent of a phone call, a cold | :10:10. | :10:15.
Another thing that people necessarily one that when they are | :10:16. | :10:20.
trying to enjoy the city centre with all the great improvements we've | :10:21. | :10:23.
A man has died in a crash on the A46 in Lincolnshire. | :10:24. | :10:33.
It happened last night at Osgodby near Market Rasen. | :10:34. | :10:35.
The driver, from the Cleethorpes area, died at the scene. | :10:36. | :10:38.
A female passenger was taken to hospital for treatment. | :10:39. | :10:42.
The last minute goal giving a fans hope and why hundreds of people | :10:43. | :11:02.
queued to get Lego daffodils. -- giving Lincoln fans hope. | :11:03. | :11:06.
Stephen took this picture of Saltend. Their is a beautiful golf | :11:07. | :11:30.
course and quite widely lower the tone by allowing caravans and is | :11:31. | :11:36.
quite beyond me. Just do what she came in to do. You were lost for | :11:37. | :11:41.
words that. I should do that more often, celebrate. It is not looking | :11:42. | :11:47.
too bad for the next 24 hours. It is very quiet and will be some sunshine | :11:48. | :11:53.
particularly across Lincolnshire are gradually close was Berlin from the | :11:54. | :11:56.
North West. The satellite is not really picking the cloud up but | :11:57. | :11:59.
gradually it is going to edge down south over the next 24 hours. That's | :12:00. | :12:07.
the outlook for Friday. It should be of interest to gardeners because | :12:08. | :12:11.
after a milder interlude on Friday this cold front will introduce | :12:12. | :12:14.
colder there for Friday the weekend and could be a touch of frost on the | :12:15. | :12:19.
cards. Right now it is fine and I think that cloud will filter into | :12:20. | :12:23.
East Yorkshire down through Lincolnshire but it is fairly | :12:24. | :12:28.
tenuous staff so that is the chance of touch of ground frost. Maybe one | :12:29. | :12:36.
or 2 degrees and in sheltered localities three of 4 degrees. The | :12:37. | :12:41.
highest high water time in Britain will be 42 minutes past ten and the | :12:42. | :12:44.
morrow. Some sunshine in Lincolnshire and almost they might | :12:45. | :12:49.
always more cloud in East Yorkshire which gradually thickens from the | :12:50. | :12:52.
North West but apart from the odd spot of drizzle it is dry. The | :12:53. | :12:57.
brightest spot of all will be crossed Northolt and side ligature | :12:58. | :13:01.
into eastern parts of ligature. Top temperatures into double figures and | :13:02. | :13:05.
perhaps as high as 11 or 12 when we get decent breaks in the cloud. | :13:06. | :13:09.
Again a special across South Lincolnshire. Gardeners and farmers | :13:10. | :13:15.
would like the dry outlook and Thursday and Friday milder and quite | :13:16. | :13:21.
dry and then Friday not too bad until the cold front slips in | :13:22. | :13:25.
inducing colder air for next weekend. Then there's the chance a | :13:26. | :13:36.
touch of frost. If you do have a caravan, the complaints go to Paul | :13:37. | :13:37.
Hudson. See you tomorrow. It brings over ?4 million | :13:38. | :14:01.
into the county every year - and the Lincolnshire Show looks set | :14:02. | :14:04.
to be just as successful once again. That's despite a disease among | :14:05. | :14:07.
cattle which has caused almost a quarter of a million of them | :14:08. | :14:09.
to be culled. Bovine Tuberculosis has | :14:10. | :14:12.
hit the industry hard, but exhibitors say they'll still be | :14:13. | :14:13.
coming to the Lincolnshire Our Rural Affairs Correspondent | :14:14. | :14:16.
Linsey Smith has more. For almost 150 years | :14:17. | :14:19.
the Lincolnshire Show has been A shop window for breeders | :14:20. | :14:21.
and farmers to sell their pedigrees But there has been concern | :14:22. | :14:26.
about its future after other shows, including nearby | :14:27. | :14:30.
Nottinghamshire County Show, was shunned by exhibitors | :14:31. | :14:31.
because of strict rules about testing show cattle | :14:32. | :14:33.
for Bovine Tuberculosis. We're not seeing | :14:34. | :14:36.
a reduction at the moment. I mean, entries are in as we speak | :14:37. | :14:38.
and we are actually But the indications are there | :14:39. | :14:41.
won't be any reductions. Bovine Tuberculosis | :14:42. | :14:48.
is a contagious disease in cattle. Almost 250,000 animals have been | :14:49. | :14:50.
culled after testing positive. Cattle are more at risk | :14:51. | :14:54.
in the South West and Midlands, which means fewer farmers | :14:55. | :14:59.
are willing to take their cattle It's partly because of expensive | :15:00. | :15:02.
tests farmers have to carry out on their animals when moving | :15:03. | :15:09.
them to shows. But because Lincolnshire's in a low | :15:10. | :15:16.
risk area most farmers only have to test before a show rather | :15:17. | :15:18.
than before and after. It's an unnecessary worry, | :15:19. | :15:25.
according to Michael Read. It is now almost 100% certain | :15:26. | :15:27.
there won't be any TB Definitely not, otherwise | :15:28. | :15:33.
we wouldn't be showing. We have got to be out | :15:34. | :15:37.
and about showing our stock, I think the Lincolnshire Show this | :15:38. | :15:40.
year is the 52nd I've been Organisers had planned other | :15:41. | :15:48.
displays, including a mini knights' trail should | :15:49. | :15:56.
entries not materialise. But, so far, it appears the main | :15:57. | :15:57.
ring will be bustling as always. Linsey Smith, BBC Look North, | :15:58. | :16:01.
Lincolnshire Showground. If you have a story you think we | :16:02. | :16:19.
should know about drop us an e-mail. Tell a soul about it and give us a | :16:20. | :16:23.
phone number and get it on the telephone. -- tell us all about it. | :16:24. | :16:30.
They've been a non-league club for the past six seasons | :16:31. | :16:32.
but on Saturday Lincoln City could reclaim their place | :16:33. | :16:34.
That's after a dramatic comeback which saw the Imps win their latest | :16:35. | :16:38.
match at Gateshead with virtually the last kick of the game. | :16:39. | :16:41.
Our sports reporter Simon Clark was there and he's been looking | :16:42. | :16:44.
at what they have to do now to win on Saturday. | :16:45. | :16:59.
It's been one joyful match after another for this lot. | :17:00. | :17:02.
These Lincoln fans leaving Gateshead were full of happiness, in stark | :17:03. | :17:04.
contrast to how they were feeling just five minutes earlier. | :17:05. | :17:21.
That's because the Imps were reeling from this | :17:22. | :17:23.
But as the game reached its conclusion another penalty, calmly | :17:24. | :17:27.
Then as full-time was about you, the sublime | :17:28. | :17:30.
finish but the unexpected victory and the Imps to the verge of | :17:31. | :17:33.
FA Cup, FA Trophy, league, everything. | :17:34. | :17:38.
It's a home game next Saturday, we are going to do it. | :17:39. | :17:42.
So the fans are ready for one more push at this promotion | :17:43. | :17:48.
lark but the manager admitted the team have | :17:49. | :17:52.
I think we've played 11 in 33 or 34 days, and | :17:53. | :17:56.
were playing against a team that played six. | :17:57. | :18:00.
Physically we were under today and when you can't get the levels | :18:01. | :18:03.
physically you have to be mentally really tough. | :18:04. | :18:06.
And this leading academic says evidence suggests a | :18:07. | :18:08.
When we experience those kind of positive, | :18:09. | :18:11.
We experience positive emotions and then when | :18:12. | :18:14.
they undertake tasks like | :18:15. | :18:15.
going into the next training session, even if the physical | :18:16. | :18:18.
activity they are doing might be of the same intensity it'll feel | :18:19. | :18:21.
And that's reflected by one of the Imps' former players. | :18:22. | :18:31.
I don't think they feel any pressure. | :18:32. | :18:33.
I have had pressure at the bottom and at the | :18:34. | :18:35.
So just when for these fans from Saturday's sell-out game | :18:36. | :18:42.
North Ferriby United were relegated from the National | :18:43. | :18:50.
league after defeat against Barrow.In League One, | :18:51. | :18:52.
Scunthorpe United secured their place in the play-offs | :18:53. | :18:54.
following a victory against Chesterfield. | :18:55. | :18:56.
But Grimsby Town lost at Cheltenham in Russell Slade's | :18:57. | :18:58.
Hull FC beat Leigh by 24 points to ten. | :18:59. | :19:17.
These were the queues in Hull City Centre this lunchtime | :19:18. | :19:19.
as hundreds of people stood for hours waiting | :19:20. | :19:21.
The Lego daffodils have only been there for a week but today they went | :19:22. | :19:26.
on sale to the public to raise money for two charities. | :19:27. | :19:28.
Our culture correspondent Anne-Marie Tasker has more. | :19:29. | :19:33.
They've been attracting quite a crowd: more than 80,000 bricks | :19:34. | :19:35.
transformed into a host of spring daffodils. | :19:36. | :19:37.
And today the rush began to take one home - | :19:38. | :19:39.
I didn't want to miss them. I really like Lego. When the daffodils were | :19:40. | :19:58.
put into the centre of the city everyone knew they would be popular | :19:59. | :20:02.
but nobody knew they would be less popular. There have been hundreds of | :20:03. | :20:05.
people queueing for more than three hours hoping to get their hands on | :20:06. | :20:06.
one. And the queue grew and grew - | :20:07. | :20:08.
and before long, there Something from the City of Culture | :20:09. | :20:27.
to take on. It will be nice to add to the decoration my bedroom. | :20:28. | :20:29.
This queue goes right round the building and doubles back. Levitt is | :20:30. | :20:41.
going to the Lord Mayors charities. How long have you been queueing for? | :20:42. | :20:48.
Three hours. Was it worth it? Yes. My feet are taking. -- are aching. | :20:49. | :20:55.
And for new Mum Ruth Hayward it was yet another City | :20:56. | :20:57.
