Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. | :00:24. | :00:25.
Lincolnshire MP Nick Boles who has cancer says he will stand. | :00:26. | :00:32.
German engineering giant Siemens commits to Lincoln | :00:33. | :00:33.
The Hull man with depression gets a boost from Princes William | :00:34. | :00:38.
and Harry, as he prepares for the London Marathon. | :00:39. | :00:41.
As a nation we needed to grip this because talking about mental health | :00:42. | :00:44.
He was genuinely open, honest and knowledgeable, | :00:45. | :00:47.
and wanted to learn more from us as well. | :00:48. | :00:50.
The mystery of Brenda Simpson's Christmas cards that finally arrived | :00:51. | :00:52.
For endangered hedgehogs in an East Yorkshire village. A new home. The | :00:53. | :01:09.
weather forecast follows in 15 minutes. | :01:10. | :01:14.
A Lincolnshire MP who was diagnosed with cancer says he WILL stand again | :01:15. | :01:18.
Nick Boles - who represents Grantham and Stamford for the Conservatives - | :01:19. | :01:21.
says he's completed his treatment for the disease and is expected | :01:22. | :01:24.
Today MPs backed the Prime Minister's call for a snap | :01:25. | :01:32.
That means thousands of local activists can begin | :01:33. | :01:36.
planning their campaigns over the next seven weeks. | :01:37. | :01:38.
More from our Political Editor Tim Iredale. | :01:39. | :01:44.
Nick Boles revealed last year that doctors had found | :01:45. | :01:47.
In recent weeks he hasn't played an active role in politics, | :01:48. | :01:52.
but he did leave hospital to vote in favour of triggering | :01:53. | :01:58.
Today he revealed he'd completed his final treatment | :01:59. | :02:01.
for non Hodgkin's lymphoma and doctors expect him | :02:02. | :02:03.
In a statement he said: "Although my current state of health | :02:04. | :02:06.
will prevent me from playing an energetic part in the election | :02:07. | :02:09.
campaign, I am confident that if I am re-elected I will be able | :02:10. | :02:12.
to resume my duties as Member of Parliament with renewed vigour | :02:13. | :02:15.
None of our MPs opposed plans for a snap election when it | :02:16. | :02:25.
The only one of our sitting MPs to announce they won t be standing | :02:26. | :02:29.
again in Alan Johnson as Labour's candidate in Hull West and Hessle. | :02:30. | :02:34.
There is a growing list of names hoping to replace them. | :02:35. | :02:38.
And Ukip MEP Mike Hookem - who was famously involved | :02:39. | :02:54.
in an altercation says he want sto be party candidate in Grimsby. | :02:55. | :02:58.
Amongst our MPs opinion is divided as to whether Brexit will be a | :02:59. | :03:06.
dominant issue in the campaign. It is incredibly important for people | :03:07. | :03:14.
to be behind that. People will be looking that under a Conservative | :03:15. | :03:18.
Government we are seeing cuts to our local schools and our local NHS in | :03:19. | :03:24.
crisis. Spare a thought for the thousands of activists working for | :03:25. | :03:28.
all the political parties who have been thrust into a political | :03:29. | :03:33.
election campaign with no notice. There was not much forewarning. I | :03:34. | :03:40.
now have only really a week or so ten days to sort out all the issue | :03:41. | :03:45.
around getting an election in hand and under way and the literature | :03:46. | :03:50.
prepared and all the volunteers ready to help out and everything | :03:51. | :03:54.
else. This is what we can expect of the next few weeks. People knocking | :03:55. | :03:59.
on the door and leaflets stuffed through the letterbox from | :04:00. | :04:04.
candidates who want our board. -- who want our boat. | :04:05. | :04:12.
Earlier I spoke to Victoria Atkins - the Conservative MP | :04:13. | :04:14.
for Louth and Horncastle - I asked whether she was surprised | :04:15. | :04:17.
I didn't wake up yesterday expecting a general election and was a little | :04:18. | :04:27.
bit surprised but we have a ladder chance to think about it and sleep | :04:28. | :04:30.
on it and I am really looking forward to the chance. The Prime | :04:31. | :04:35.
Minister has said time and again there is no need for an action. Her | :04:36. | :04:40.
trust has gone out the window. She has made it clear it was a decision | :04:41. | :04:44.
she took very recently and also reluctantly. She thought very | :04:45. | :04:49.
carefully about it and if you think back to last summer and the | :04:50. | :04:54.
immediate aftermath of the referendum the most important thing | :04:55. | :04:57.
was stability for the country. She has achieved that and we have had a | :04:58. | :05:01.
rapid economy and having now triggered Article 50 now she feels | :05:02. | :05:07.
we need to have this general election to help give her a mandate | :05:08. | :05:14.
to into Europe. 17% of East Lindsey voted for Brexit. She has made it | :05:15. | :05:22.
about Brexit. -- 70%. You voted to remain. My manifesto promise to | :05:23. | :05:31.
those of 15 is that we would hold a referendum and honour the results. | :05:32. | :05:37.
-- 2015. I took a different view from people in my constituency but | :05:38. | :05:41.
that is the nature of democracy and why we had a referendum were each | :05:42. | :05:46.
person's vote counted as much as their neighbours. I'm very clear | :05:47. | :05:49.
that now we have had the referendum and the result was clear I am | :05:50. | :05:52.
supporting the Government and ensuring that we leave Europe. Do | :05:53. | :05:57.
you feel that the people of life and Newcastle want another election. -- | :05:58. | :06:11.
Louth. I can appreciate that people at this stage may be thinking let's | :06:12. | :06:17.
get on with it the job of Government but actually we need to have the | :06:18. | :06:20.
selection so that Theresa May has the mandate she needs to do the best | :06:21. | :06:26.
possible deal not just for the UK but also for Louth and Newcastle. | :06:27. | :06:38.
You have a 15,000 majority. You can put your feet up and take it easy. | :06:39. | :06:43.
Certainly not. I worked very hard at the last election and hope my | :06:44. | :06:46.
constituents think I have worked hard since then. I'm looking forward | :06:47. | :06:50.
to getting out and shaking hands and talking to people on the doorstep | :06:51. | :06:53.
and winning the trust and winning the vote. | :06:54. | :06:58.
There's been a big response following yesterday's announcement. | :06:59. | :07:04.
Anne in Bridlington says: 'Well done Theresa May. | :07:05. | :07:06.
It's time that people listened and the country needs to draw | :07:07. | :07:09.
together behind you because you have to fight our cause.' | :07:10. | :07:11.
But Anthony in Sleaford says 'The general election should have | :07:12. | :07:14.
been called the day Theresa May took over as PM. | :07:15. | :07:16.
She was not voted in by the public and has been running, | :07:17. | :07:19.
or trying to run, our country without our votes.' | :07:20. | :07:21.
But Gale in Scunthorpe says 'I have never voted Conservative | :07:22. | :07:24.
in my life but I will definitely be voting for Theresa May. | :07:25. | :07:26.
While Jeremy Corbyn is leader of the Labour Party I will not | :07:27. | :07:29.
And you can still get in touch about this one. | :07:30. | :07:35.
Perhaps you agree with Gale there and have voted one way | :07:36. | :07:38.
all your life but will be changing your mind this time? | :07:39. | :07:43.
Are you certain of how you will vote or will the campaign | :07:44. | :07:46.
Is this an election about Brexit - or is it | :07:47. | :08:02.
In our second look North tonight I will be talking to the Brig and | :08:03. | :08:31.
Goole MP. The German engineering giant Siemens | :08:32. | :08:34.
says it will spend ? 35 million relocating more of its gas turbine | :08:35. | :08:37.
operations to a business The company is expanding its site | :08:38. | :08:39.
on Teal Park in what it calls a positive step for the company | :08:40. | :08:43.
in the city. Our business correspondent | :08:44. | :08:46.
Leanne Brown is here - Well there has been lots of talk | :08:47. | :08:48.
about the impact the Brexit vote might have on Siemens in the UK - | :08:49. | :08:56.
but this is a sign of their confidence | :08:57. | :08:59.
and commitment to the county. The company is one of the largest | :09:00. | :09:01.
private employers in Lincoln, manufacture and service a range | :09:02. | :09:03.
of industrial gas turbines - in simple terms they're basically | :09:04. | :09:08.
engine's that generate power. Of course those parts need servicing | :09:09. | :09:16.
- so with this extra investment Service Centre - that will be | :09:17. | :09:28.
based at their current They're relocating a storage | :09:29. | :09:32.
facility they have in Freeman Road there - | :09:33. | :09:37.
so everything is in one place. Building work is set to begin | :09:38. | :09:39.
as early as next month and it's hoped to be completed | :09:40. | :09:42.
by spring next year - Humberside Police want help to find | :09:43. | :09:45.
a missing teenager from Hull. 15-year-old Ben-Anthony | :09:46. | :09:52.
Edmonds hasn't been seen since leaving his home | :09:53. | :09:54.
on Sunday afternoon. Police say they're worried | :09:55. | :09:57.
because of his age and are asking anyone with information | :09:58. | :09:59.
to come forward. A woman is in critical | :10:00. | :10:05.
but stable condition in hospital following a fire | :10:06. | :10:07.
at a bungalow in Skegness. It happened at Finisterre | :10:08. | :10:09.
Avenue this morning. Mental health has been in the news | :10:10. | :10:12.
this week with Prince William and Prince Harry opening up | :10:13. | :10:15.
about their experiences following the death of their mother | :10:16. | :10:17.
Princess Diana in a car Paul Plowman from Hull is one | :10:18. | :10:20.
of a group of runners - all with mental health issues - | :10:21. | :10:24.
who have met, and been supported by, the two Princes | :10:25. | :10:26.
as they prepare to take It's part of a documentary | :10:27. | :10:29.
on the issue on BBC One tomorrow. I think from my personal point of | :10:30. | :10:42.
view it is emotional side. I hate seeing people in emotional or mental | :10:43. | :10:46.
torment. It is really sad because it takes you down a very different path | :10:47. | :10:50.
in life. The point of the campaign with the marathon is you want to | :10:51. | :10:54.
reduce the stigma. A lot of people talk about mental health like it is | :10:55. | :10:56.
heavily normal. I spoke to Paul this afternoon. | :10:57. | :11:11.
There were a couple of things that happened in life with relationships | :11:12. | :11:14.
and work in issues like that that sent me off kilter couple of years | :11:15. | :11:18.
ago. That was probably the main catalyst for it and then I've been | :11:19. | :11:24.
struggling with it since then. Looking at other people and thinking | :11:25. | :11:27.
they had it all with jobs and partners. I think there was a lot to | :11:28. | :11:35.
do with that. I had hit 30 the era and did not think my life was going | :11:36. | :11:39.
away necessarily that my peers were going and there was a lot of | :11:40. | :11:42.
comparisons and compare myself to others. Prince William and Prince | :11:43. | :11:46.
Harry have spoken out this week. Giving this will help people | :11:47. | :11:50.
understand the issues to make them more willing to talk about mental | :11:51. | :11:54.
health issues? I hope so. They have been absolutely fantastic for us in | :11:55. | :11:58.
our journey. There are so high-profile that they attract so | :11:59. | :12:02.
much attention. These are things that are genuine to them and have | :12:03. | :12:06.
affected them. If they can speak out and say they have suffered or have | :12:07. | :12:12.
sought help then that is great. You met Harry. We met Harry and William | :12:13. | :12:18.
and Kate. I spent most of my time with Harry. What did you talk about? | :12:19. | :12:25.
He was quite open and honest about his experience in the services and | :12:26. | :12:33.
here seen a lot of vets with post-traumatic stress disorder and | :12:34. | :12:37.
problems like that. He spoke to us about our problems and about mental | :12:38. | :12:40.
health and how to start about in society as a whole. He was genuinely | :12:41. | :12:45.
open and honest and knowledgeable and wanted to learn more from us as | :12:46. | :12:48.
well so it was quite a surprise. Do you feel better now? The running, | :12:49. | :12:55.
the one thing I would stress from this process is, the running has | :12:56. | :13:06.
been... Out you didn't startle November? I hadn't done any exercise | :13:07. | :13:15.
before. I started in November and have dropped all antidepressants now | :13:16. | :13:20.
and so they do the running. That is vital for me. Exercise is crucial in | :13:21. | :13:26.
the repair for mental health. I was so this is an overnight cure and | :13:27. | :13:30.
will be absolutely fine when to start running but in terms of | :13:31. | :13:33.
keeping me on a balanced level and a coping strategy it has been | :13:34. | :13:38.
fantastic. It is very good to see. He looked very well. Crossed. Thank | :13:39. | :13:48.
you very much, Peter. Cheers. -- fingers crossed. | :13:49. | :13:51.
And the first programme in the two part series - | :13:52. | :13:58.
Mind over Marathon - is on BBC One tomorrow | :13:59. | :14:00.
And see how Paul gets on in the second programme next week. | :14:01. | :14:10.
Still ahead tonight: Why Christmas arrived more than a year late | :14:11. | :14:13.
for the friends and family of Brenda Simpson. | :14:14. | :14:15.
A new home for endangered hedgehogs in an East Yorkshire village giving | :14:16. | :14:18.
We were talking last night about caravans. I will reach one of seven | :14:19. | :14:54.
e-mails. -- several e-mails. Linda says iPhone post comments about | :14:55. | :14:59.
caravans and fear. To make it even I invite him to stay mine for a week | :15:00. | :15:02.
in Mablethorpe. Would you like to stay with lender for a week in | :15:03. | :15:12.
Mablethorpe? -- with lender. -- Linda says iPhone and Paul's | :15:13. | :15:16.
comments about caravans very under fear. We will see a week and warm | :15:17. | :15:25.
front heading down from the North West which will bring perhaps a | :15:26. | :15:28.
little drizzle in the morning. Predominantly dry weather looks set | :15:29. | :15:33.
to continue which is not good news for farmers and growers. The cloud | :15:34. | :15:37.
has been steadily pushing down from the North West during the course of | :15:38. | :15:41.
today. It will continue and we will see that process. This cold front is | :15:42. | :15:48.
later Friday into Friday night bringing a little drizzle and no | :15:49. | :15:51.
more than that. It will introduce a cooler air the weekend but brighter | :15:52. | :15:56.
conditions should bring some sunny spells. Next week a proper cold push | :15:57. | :16:03.
that may mean showers of a wintry nature. The forecast tonight sees | :16:04. | :16:06.
that I'd continue to present the North West, perhaps bringing 12 | :16:07. | :16:11.
spots of light rain or drizzle. We will see most temperatures around | :16:12. | :16:16.
seven Celsius. The sun rises at ten to six in the morning. The next high | :16:17. | :16:22.
water time in whole Victoria Dock at quarter to one in the morning. -- | :16:23. | :16:31.
Hull. That week and warm front might bring a little patchy drizzle and it | :16:32. | :16:37.
will be quite dry but some places quite crowded. Hopefully somewhere | :16:38. | :16:42.
some cloudy spells. The warm front will bring some milder era ends with | :16:43. | :16:46.
two or three degrees up on today with highs of 15 Celsius. A similar | :16:47. | :16:52.
sort of day on Friday. It will be mostly dry but rather cloudy with a | :16:53. | :16:56.
bit of light patchy rain on Friday night. The weekend looks a bit | :16:57. | :17:00.
colder Pirbright was some sunshine and variable amounts of cloud. | :17:01. | :17:06.
Mentioning Victoria Dock is not a get out of jail free card. D1 me to | :17:07. | :17:18.
reply to Lynda tonight? You're always on for a free holiday. Get in | :17:19. | :17:21.
the caravan. Go away. When Brenda Simpson dropped her | :17:22. | :17:35.
Christmas cards off at her post office in Ruskington, | :17:36. | :17:38.
near Sleaford, in December 2015 she thought it might take a few | :17:39. | :17:39.
days for them to arrive. That is - until Easter Saturday - | :17:40. | :17:42.
16 months later - when she started getting puzzled calls | :17:43. | :17:47.
from her friends across the country. I've got friends, family, | :17:48. | :17:49.
acquaintances... Brenda has a long | :17:50. | :17:52.
Christmas card list. In 2015, she spent more | :17:53. | :17:54.
than ?40 on postage sending I posted them early | :17:55. | :17:56.
to avoid disappointment. Everyone thinks it's quite funny, | :17:57. | :18:05.
but for me it's quite upsetting. cos you wouldn't be | :18:06. | :18:34.
sending Christmas cards From her home village of Ruskington, | :18:35. | :18:37.
Brenda sent 82 cards Some went North to Blackpool, | :18:38. | :18:40.
Bradford and Rotherham. And some were sent south to London, | :18:41. | :18:43.
Devon and St Austell in Cornwall. But they've taken 16 months | :18:44. | :18:46.
to reach their destinations. Brenda posted her cards at the post | :18:47. | :18:50.
office in her local supermarket. So long after she delivered them, | :18:51. | :18:53.
no one has yet been able to explain It's not the money it's | :18:54. | :18:56.
the principle of the thing. If you send a Christmas card you | :18:57. | :19:08.
expect them to get it. Maybe one might call which is understandable. | :19:09. | :19:16.
But for that is a lot of cards to go missing. A hell of a lot. | :19:17. | :19:21.
The Royal Mail told us it's investigating. | :19:22. | :19:23.
This year I'm not sending Christmas cards. | :19:24. | :19:25.
It's not just the stamps, if the cards as well. | :19:26. | :19:36.
Bren's now having to explain to dozens of worried | :19:37. | :19:39.
The team which runs Hornsea's independent lifeboat say | :19:40. | :19:46.
a new tractor to get the boat in and out of the water | :19:47. | :19:49.
It was bought with a ?96,000 donation and replaces | :19:50. | :19:52.
a number of decades-old tractors that were struggling | :19:53. | :19:54.
to cope with driving in and out of the North Sea. | :19:55. | :20:02.
The Lego daffodils in Hull City centre that were sold off yesterday | :20:03. | :20:05.
People queued for hours to get one of the flowers | :20:06. | :20:09.
which were on display in King Edward Square as part | :20:10. | :20:11.
They were given away to nearly 2,000 people | :20:12. | :20:14.
Burton Fleming in East Yorkshire is welcoming dozens | :20:15. | :20:23.
It has become the first hedgehog friendly village in the North. | :20:24. | :20:27.
Around fifty of them have been put in gardens across the village. | :20:28. | :20:29.
Jill Archbold is there - have they been exploring | :20:30. | :20:32.
A quick paint job - and Jason - is one of 50 rescued hedgehogs | :20:33. | :20:43.
hedgehog friendly village - where many families are happy | :20:44. | :20:53.
to see Burton Fleming's new arrivals up close... | :20:54. | :20:58.
The children had never seen a hedgehog live until we started doing | :20:59. | :21:03.
this project so we're hoping there will be more out in the wild for | :21:04. | :21:09.
people to see and observed and back the old hedgehogs they released it | :21:10. | :21:10.
when we were children. And in many of the | :21:11. | :21:14.
village's back gardens - local residents have been | :21:15. | :21:16.
getting their hedgerows ready... We have put it under the hedge so it | :21:17. | :21:23.
can go next door but hopefully it will stay around so we can watch it. | :21:24. | :21:27.

Every hedgehog has come from a sanctuary near Scunthorpe - | :21:36. | :21:38.
