An unsettled few days, join me for the updated forecast. | :00:40. | :00:56.
A major road through Lincolnshire remains closed tonight suspected | :00:57. | :00:58.
stolen car has crashed into a level crossing in Lincolnshire | :00:59. | :01:01.
It happened on the A158 coast road in Langworth. | :01:02. | :01:10.
No train was involved in the accident but rail services | :01:11. | :01:13.
between Lincoln and Grimsby have been affected. | :01:14. | :01:17.
The driver sustained serious injuries and has been | :01:18. | :01:21.
Well, it was 2:30pm and the Vauxhall Corsa overtook traffic waiting at | :01:22. | :01:45.
the barrier, it crashed into the barrier, hit the house behind me | :01:46. | :01:49.
before crashing into the Royal Mail lorry waiting on the opposite side. | :01:50. | :01:55.
The police tell us they believe the vehicle had been stolen from a | :01:56. | :01:59.
neighbouring county and fails to stop. The IPCC has been notified of | :02:00. | :02:05.
this incident. The barriers were down because a train was approaching | :02:06. | :02:10.
the crossing. Luckily, it stopped before the incident but I spoke to a | :02:11. | :02:15.
passenger on the train. The police came on board the train and said | :02:16. | :02:19.
they had to inspect the tracks because they did not know if the | :02:20. | :02:23.
rails were bent or we could continue to Lincoln. There were an emergency | :02:24. | :02:29.
services, the air ambulance, fire brigade and if we were a few seconds | :02:30. | :02:35.
ahead, it would have hit the train. How long to clear the road? | :02:36. | :02:42.
Engineers have been working here all afternoon and evening and got the | :02:43. | :02:46.
barriers back in place and they are inspecting the house to see if it is | :02:47. | :02:50.
structurally sound. Police tell me they are anxious to get the road | :02:51. | :02:54.
reopened because it is a major route to Lincolnshire. The driver of the | :02:55. | :02:59.
suspected stolen car, he was airlifted to hospital and remains in | :03:00. | :03:01.
condition. Victoria, thank you. 400 thousand pounds has been paid | :03:02. | :03:06.
to the family of a young woman from Hull who died eleven years | :03:07. | :03:10.
after botched heart surgery. Carrie Wright's brain was starved | :03:11. | :03:12.
of oxygen during the operation Carrie Wright's family | :03:13. | :03:14.
say she was determined to live her life to the full, | :03:15. | :03:30.
despite suffering brain damage during an operation that made | :03:31. | :03:33.
everyday tasks like boarding a bus In 2003, aged just nine, | :03:34. | :03:35.
she underwent heart surgery in Leeds but mistakes were made that | :03:36. | :03:41.
left her unable to walk, barely able to talk | :03:42. | :03:43.
and with curvature of the spine Carrie spent years rebuilding her | :03:44. | :03:47.
life but in 2014 died unexpectedly from pneumonia and sepsis, | :03:48. | :03:54.
infections she was vulnerable Words cannot describe how | :03:55. | :03:56.
much I miss our girl. Carrie's surgery was carried | :03:57. | :04:03.
out by Nihal Weerasena, The procedure involved putting | :04:04. | :04:12.
Carrie into circulatory arrest, At the time it was recommended | :04:13. | :04:17.
for no more than 45 minutes but Carrie spent two hours in this | :04:18. | :04:20.
state during which time her brain Whether it was arrogance, | :04:21. | :04:23.
thinking he could carry on and would still be able | :04:24. | :04:35.
to perform it safely? In January, Nihal Weerasena | :04:36. | :04:39.
was struck off the medical register as a result of failings in the care | :04:40. | :04:46.
he provided to six other patients at the Leeds General infirmary | :04:47. | :04:54.
between 2008 and 2012. The Medical Practitioner's Tribunal | :04:55. | :04:56.
service ruled he had shown reckless Leeds Teaching Hospitals has | :04:57. | :04:59.
apologised to Carrie's family and They say they deeply regret | :05:00. | :05:03.
that they failed to offer the standard of care | :05:04. | :05:12.
that she and her family Carrie's family have received | :05:13. | :05:14.
?430,000 but say it has little meaning as the toll | :05:15. | :05:20.
of losing their daughter Humberside Police is routinely | :05:21. | :05:22.
failing vulnerable victims of crime, according to a report | :05:23. | :05:32.
by the police watchdog. It was also told to improve work | :05:33. | :05:34.
to reduce re-offending and that The HMIC findings from an inspection | :05:35. | :05:37.
carried out last year come just over a week after the Chief Constable, | :05:38. | :05:42.
Justine Curran left the force. I spoke to the new acting chief | :05:43. | :06:02.
constable. I asked if he agreed the force requires improvement. | :06:03. | :06:03.
I asked if he agreed the force requires improvement. | :06:04. | :06:05.
Of course were disappointed but we do not argue with it. | :06:06. | :06:08.
There are areas we need to improve on but we are pleased HMIC | :06:09. | :06:11.
Why has the force not improved since last year? | :06:12. | :06:14.
You will say improvements have been made since but the chief constable | :06:15. | :06:17.
told me that last year and here we are again. | :06:18. | :06:20.
HMIC will say improvements have been made and we are rated as good | :06:21. | :06:28.
in some important areas around preventing crime, tackling | :06:29. | :06:30.
anti-social behaviour and keeping people safe and other key areas | :06:31. | :06:33.
The crime commission says it is a failure of leadership | :06:34. | :06:38.
at the highest level, that is not just the departing chief | :06:39. | :06:42.
Of course, absolutely and we are not frightened | :06:43. | :06:52.
of accountability and we share a collective resonsibility. | :06:53. | :06:54.
We are committed to making sure we work with the staff we have got | :06:55. | :06:57.
who do really tremendous things on a daily basis to ensure we put it | :06:58. | :07:01.
right and we all ready have fixed that and it has been acknowledged. | :07:02. | :07:04.
Was the previous chief constable the wrong person for the job? | :07:05. | :07:07.
Justine Curran was a committed and dedicated public servant. | :07:08. | :07:09.
Acting Chief Constable Garry Forsyth from Humberside Police, | :07:10. | :07:19.
and Lincolnshire Police were rated as good in the same inspections. | :07:20. | :07:26.
The changing tidal patterns over the past 30 years have created | :07:27. | :07:28.
a new island in the middle of the Humber. | :07:29. | :07:33.
It's been named Whitton Island and has become home | :07:34. | :07:35.
It will be protected by the RSPB and turned into a nature reserve. | :07:36. | :07:42.
Our environment correspondent Paul Murphy reports. | :07:43. | :07:44.
The RSPB describes it as island paradise for wildlife. | :07:45. | :07:48.
Just off the north bank, here in the upper reaches | :07:49. | :07:51.
of the Humber Estuary, lies Whitton Island, | :07:52. | :07:55.
Britain's newest nature reserve, looking at its best | :07:56. | :07:57.
We have got fantastic views of Marsh Harrier... | :07:58. | :08:05.
We can't go on it just yet but at the nearby Blacktoft Sands | :08:06. | :08:08.
reserve they're excited to be taking control of Whitton. | :08:09. | :08:13.
Islands are just great refuges for wildlife. | :08:14. | :08:16.
Things like the pink-footed geese that come in winter. | :08:17. | :08:18.
We get up to 2% of the world's population. | :08:19. | :08:24.
Breeding avocets, breeding Marsh Harriers, | :08:25. | :08:25.
You know, it is all part of trying to make things better along | :08:26. | :08:32.
Whitton Island has only existed for around 30 years. | :08:33. | :08:38.
Starting as a mudflat, it slowly formed as the shifting sands | :08:39. | :08:42.
It's now more than a mile long and shows every | :08:43. | :08:48.
And as it grows so does its bird population. | :08:49. | :08:53.
You get a lot of birds from Arctic areas coming into winter. | :08:54. | :08:56.
Then there is a big change around and you get all the summer migrants | :08:57. | :09:04.
coming up from Africa, areas like that. | :09:05. | :09:09.
Any form of extension to this area is bound to be | :09:10. | :09:12.
We've had special permission to film above this sensitive area, | :09:13. | :09:24.
which the RSPB is now leasing from Associated British Ports. | :09:25. | :09:27.
Habitat improvement work will begin later in the year to make Whitton | :09:28. | :09:30.
even more attractive to visiting birds. | :09:31. | :09:34.
Some fantastic pictures taken from an aerial camera. There are more on | :09:35. | :09:48.
