The headlines from BBC Look North this Monday night... | :00:00. | :00:12.
People who abuse travellers and gypsies online are told | :00:13. | :00:14.
they will not get away with it by police. | :00:15. | :00:19.
It is like it is the last community in this country where people feel | :00:20. | :00:26.
they can say that kind of thing with immunity. Well, they are not going | :00:27. | :00:28.
to get immunity. New laws to protect | :00:29. | :00:28.
children from grooming A man's jailed after a cash | :00:29. | :00:30.
machine was ripped from Plenty of decent weather | :00:31. | :00:34.
across East Yorkshire The Humberside Police | :00:35. | :00:37.
and Crime Commissioner says his force will prosecute people | :00:38. | :00:57.
who make extreme comments on social Keith Hunter says some people | :00:58. | :01:00.
are committing hate crimes and the force will target those | :01:01. | :01:05.
who post threatening comments Our correspondent | :01:06. | :01:09.
Vicky Johnson has more. They are often portrayed | :01:10. | :01:17.
in the media as unwelcome visitors. And when travellers | :01:18. | :01:19.
recently pitched up near Hull the anger of some locals | :01:20. | :01:24.
erupted on social media. Many posted abusive | :01:25. | :01:28.
comments online, ranging from calling travellers vermin | :01:29. | :01:35.
to threats to harm them. People have been writing | :01:36. | :01:38.
things in encouraging people to burn out these caravans | :01:39. | :01:40.
with women and children inside. If people threatened | :01:41. | :01:43.
to burn down churches, synagogues and mosques, | :01:44. | :01:44.
people would rightly crying out that But with gypsies and | :01:45. | :01:47.
travellers it is like they are the last community where | :01:48. | :01:50.
people feel they can say that kind This is one of the trailers that | :01:51. | :01:53.
I live in with my family. Ryalla Duffy is a Romany gypsy | :01:54. | :02:05.
who tries to build bridges with the but she says online abuse | :02:06. | :02:08.
is very damaging. It makes me feel fearful | :02:09. | :02:16.
for my children, my grandchildren. It makes me feel separate | :02:17. | :02:21.
from the rest of the community. It is very debilitating | :02:22. | :02:24.
for young people, most of whom are online, | :02:25. | :02:28.
reading comments like that. There have been complaints | :02:29. | :02:35.
right across the area from Grimsby to Goole about the mess | :02:36. | :02:41.
left by some travellers and gypsies. While there are some permanent sites | :02:42. | :02:48.
there are no specific stopover places in Hull, Northern | :02:49. | :02:51.
Lincolnshire or East Yorkshire. The council have failed | :02:52. | :02:53.
in their obligation So families do not have an option | :02:54. | :02:55.
about where they live and where they Every community has individuals | :02:56. | :02:59.
you might call bad apples. For the Humberside Police | :03:00. | :03:07.
and Crime Commissioner, We must draw a line in the sand | :03:08. | :03:09.
and say it is not acceptable for anybody to use threatening | :03:10. | :03:15.
and abusive language. Police are warning anybody | :03:16. | :03:19.
found posting hate filled comments about gypsies | :03:20. | :03:22.
and travellers The company that runs | :03:23. | :03:24.
many of the Humber Ports says it's investing ?50 million in sites | :03:25. | :03:34.
in Hull and Immingham. ABP says it will put in new cranes | :03:35. | :03:38.
and double the capacity of both The company says it follows four | :03:39. | :03:42.
years of substantial growth in the volume of goods passing | :03:43. | :03:45.
through its ports. Children's charities have welcomed | :03:46. | :03:49.
the introduction of new laws to help police stop people who try to groom | :03:50. | :03:54.
youngsters through social The new powers mean officers will be | :03:55. | :03:57.
able to intervene earlier before any There were 93 reports last year | :03:58. | :04:06.
to police in Yorkshire and the Humber of children meeting | :04:07. | :04:10.
paedophiles after In Lincolnshire there were 50 | :04:11. | :04:12.
incidents over the last five years. Helen Westman is from the Northern | :04:13. | :04:20.
branch of the NSPCC. I asked her what impact these | :04:21. | :04:24.
new powers will have. The police will be able to intervene | :04:25. | :04:29.
earlier to protect children The law came into being in 2015, | :04:30. | :04:34.
but it has taken two years for the government to sign the paperwork | :04:35. | :04:40.
to enact the law, but from today The police wanted | :04:41. | :04:43.
these powers, so how From today, it will be | :04:44. | :04:47.
illegal for an adult to send messages to children | :04:48. | :04:55.
of a sexual nature. If a child receives that kind | :04:56. | :04:59.
of message, they will be able to inform a trusted | :05:00. | :05:04.
adult in their life, who can then inform the police | :05:05. | :05:06.
and it can be stopped. That person can be prosecuted | :05:07. | :05:09.
and they can go to Presumably we only | :05:10. | :05:11.
find out about a small Because you have to get the child | :05:12. | :05:15.
to know that it is wrong That's why educating our | :05:16. | :05:22.
children is so important. So us as parents and | :05:23. | :05:25.
professionals need to speak to children early and often | :05:26. | :05:30.
about how to stay safe online. That is when they get their first | :05:31. | :05:33.
mobile phone and tablet, if they receive anything they are | :05:34. | :05:36.
worried or upset about, to tell the trusted adult and keep | :05:37. | :05:41.
the message secure, not to respond to it but share it | :05:42. | :05:46.
with a trusted adult. catching enough of these | :05:47. | :05:49.
people and not enough We want children to be as safe | :05:50. | :05:52.
in the online world as the Perpetrators need to know that | :05:53. | :05:58.
if they do something which is illegal and inappropriate, | :05:59. | :06:03.
they will be prosecuted. Every parent is going to be | :06:04. | :06:06.
very interested in this. What's the best advice for them | :06:07. | :06:10.
if they have young children who sit and play in the bedroom | :06:11. | :06:13.
on their devices? Don't assume your child, | :06:14. | :06:15.
just because they are in the house, Talk to them about | :06:16. | :06:18.
what they like to do online, who they talk to online | :06:19. | :06:24.
and what they would do if they received a message that | :06:25. | :06:26.
worried or upset them. Let them know they can | :06:27. | :06:29.
come to you as a parent or another trusted adult | :06:30. | :06:31.
to share that experience. Helen Westman earlier, from the | :06:32. | :06:33.
NSPCC. A 22-year-old man has been | :06:34. | :06:48.
jailed for four years The ATM, containing nearly ?40,000, | :06:49. | :06:51.
was ripped from the wall of the Spa shop in Thorngumbald with a stolen | :06:52. | :06:57.
digger in February. Targeted by thieves in February - | :06:58. | :07:00.
the cash point at this shop in Thorngumbold, | :07:01. | :07:03.
stolen in a ram raid. But today, as the gang behind | :07:04. | :07:07.
it is still to be arrested, 22-year-old Lewis Holdstock | :07:08. | :07:10.
from Southcoates Lane in Hull pleaded guilty to stealing a JCB | :07:11. | :07:18.
from a local farm and using it It has been distressing because a | :07:19. | :07:32.
lot of people relied upon it, especially older people. And they | :07:33. | :07:35.
have not got anywhere to get any cash out. It is very distressing and | :07:36. | :07:41.
it has upset everybody, as well. The judge told the defendant he was | :07:42. | :07:46.
probably not the brains behind the operation but had nonetheless taken | :07:47. | :07:50.
part in a sophisticated crime. He sentenced him to four years in | :07:51. | :07:53.
prison and said he would spend at least half that time behind bars and | :07:54. | :07:57.
the rest in a community sentence. Thieves failed to escape | :07:58. | :07:59.
with the ?38,000 worth of cash in the machine, | :08:00. | :08:01.
but they caused ?68,000 worth I went to the chemist | :08:02. | :08:04.
and they said, have you seen I had seen several similar | :08:05. | :08:08.
sorts of villages, maybe a bit larger than this, | :08:09. | :08:15.
having the same thing happen. Eight cash machines have been taken | :08:16. | :08:17.
in this area in the last In a statement the | :08:18. | :08:26.
police have said... Meanwhile the shop here is waiting | :08:27. | :08:39.
to return to normal, with repairs More than ?10 million of government | :08:40. | :08:42.
money will be invested in seaside Hornsea and Cleethorpes | :08:43. | :08:54.
are the biggest winners, It is hoped the investment | :08:55. | :08:57.
will create jobs and help the towns One idea is to create | :08:58. | :09:03.
a new tourism area in Hornsea. What we're going to do is create | :09:04. | :09:12.
a very attractive cafe here on this south promenade so that when people | :09:13. | :09:17.
have walked along here, they can come and sit, they can picnic, | :09:18. | :09:20.
they can watch the fishermen... Councillor Jane Everson talking in | :09:21. | :09:29.
Hornsea earlier today. Lincoln City are three points clear | :09:30. | :09:33.
at the top of the National League after a two-nil win over | :09:34. | :09:36.
Dagenham this evening. Elliott Whitehouse got the first | :09:37. | :09:38.
early in the second half. Before Matt Read sealed the win | :09:39. | :09:40.
midway through the second half. Decent enough day across | :09:41. | :09:47.
East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. We are switching gears | :09:48. | :09:54.
tonight as a weather Outbreaks of generally | :09:55. | :09:56.
light rain and drizzle, Temperatures overnight | :09:57. | :10:02.
holding up nicely. We're talking about lows | :10:03. | :10:08.
of nine or 10 Celsius. Tomorrow morning will be | :10:09. | :10:10.
a fairly grey start. Yes, we will see dribs and drabs | :10:11. | :10:17.
of drizzle as it slowly and methodically makes its way | :10:18. | :10:20.
across eastern parts. But brightening up | :10:21. | :10:24.
across northern parts in particular, with | :10:25. | :10:25.
sunny spells on offer. Temperatures getting | :10:26. | :10:29.
to around 12 or 13 Celsius. High pressure is firmly | :10:30. | :10:31.
in charge of things in the Keeping these weather fronts away | :10:32. | :10:36.
and low pressure, as well. A dry story, plenty of sunny spells | :10:37. | :10:43.
and feeling relatively That is it from us tonight. Thank | :10:44. | :10:57.
you for watching. We are back tomorrow and I am back at our past | :10:58. | :11:00.
six tomorrow night. Join us if you can. Good night. | :11:01. | :11:01.
is remaining settled. It will feel fairly warm and dry as well. | :11:02. | :11:09.
Good evening. Some rain spreading in across the Atlantic overnight. As it | :11:10. | :11:17.
does so we will see some fresh Atlantic air following on from | :11:18. | :11:21.
behind. The pollen levels will drop but the temperatures will also drop. | :11:22. | :11:28.
Some rain to go with the cloud. It is moving its way from west to east. | :11:29. | :11:32.
Drying up in not an island and eventually it will dry up in most of | :11:33. | :11:37.
Scotland. The fresher Atlantic air is following on behind. In major | :11:38. | :11:43.
towns and cities it will be five, 6 degrees. Across England and Wales | :11:44. | :11:46.
there would be extensive cloud cover. It will be a pretty grey and | :11:47. | :11:54.
wet start to some parts of Wales and the South West of England. Not much | :11:55. | :11:59.
rain by eight o'clock in the morning. Pretty grey, misty and | :12:00. | :12:06.
murky for some. Head further north and not much rain | :12:07. | :12:08. |
