The headlines tonight... Health bosses are told | :00:09. | :00:12.
the government must look closer at controversial plans | :00:13. | :00:13.
to cut back minor injuries units in East Yorkshire. | :00:14. | :00:16.
This strategy does not listen to what local people want | :00:17. | :00:18.
and is putting vital services too far from where people live. | :00:19. | :00:25.
The washed up rubbish that ends up on our beaches being turned | :00:26. | :00:28.
And how long can we hang onto this fine, mostly dry weather? | :00:29. | :00:33.
Hospital bosses have been told their plans to close | :00:34. | :00:49.
or downgrade minor injuries units in East Yorkshire will put | :00:50. | :00:53.
The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt will now have to investigate further | :00:54. | :00:58.
after an influential group of councillors said | :00:59. | :01:01.
Tonight campaigners say they're delighted. | :01:02. | :01:06.
I'll speak to one of them in a moment. | :01:07. | :01:08.
But first Matthew Bone has this report. | :01:09. | :01:11.
These plans to close or downgrade some Minor Injuries Units have met | :01:12. | :01:14.
with fierce opposition from the start. | :01:15. | :01:16.
It would mean three new urgent care centres opening at Beverley, | :01:17. | :01:19.
Bridlington and Goole for 16 hours a day. | :01:20. | :01:22.
But Minor Injury Units at Driffield and Withernsea would become | :01:23. | :01:27.
And the MIU at Hornsea would close altogether. | :01:28. | :01:39.
Today, councillors said these plans posed a risk to health care | :01:40. | :01:42.
provision in East Riding, and referred the matter | :01:43. | :01:44.
have agreed with Sir Greg Knight and myself that it should be | :01:45. | :01:49.
referred to the Secretary of State and he will pass it | :01:50. | :01:54.
on to the independent reconfiguration panel to look | :01:55. | :01:56.
Hospital bosses say more people will have better access to a better | :01:57. | :02:01.
Campaigners disagree - but the crucial question is, | :02:02. | :02:04.
what will Jeremy Hunt and his team of experts think? | :02:05. | :02:09.
June Barton is one of those fighting to keep | :02:10. | :02:11.
the Minor Injuries Unit at Hornsea open. | :02:12. | :02:14.
Tonight, I asked her for her reaction to the news | :02:15. | :02:16.
the Health Secretary would be looking at these plans. | :02:17. | :02:21.
It's a day we didn't think would come but yes, | :02:22. | :02:26.
This gives us light at the end of the tunnel and hope that these | :02:27. | :02:33.
decisions will be reversed by the Secretary of State | :02:34. | :02:37.
How do you feel that the CCG have acted over all in this? | :02:38. | :02:43.
Well, the overwhelming opinion is that they have acted appallingly. | :02:44. | :02:48.
Right from the very beginning of this so-called consultation, | :02:49. | :02:56.
they had decided well before any of the stakeholder meetings this | :02:57. | :03:00.
is what they wanted to do, so quite frankly what's the point | :03:01. | :03:03.
of holding the consultation because we haven't been consulted. | :03:04. | :03:06.
Any suggestions we put forward were always brushed aside. | :03:07. | :03:08.
I believe you think they should resign? | :03:09. | :03:11.
Oh, yes, certainly I do think they should resign. | :03:12. | :03:13.
They haven't made a very good job of being a clinical | :03:14. | :03:16.
But they have got to save money and if, as they say, | :03:17. | :03:20.
only ten patients a day use the minor injury units | :03:21. | :03:22.
in Hornsea and Withernsea, it's a waste of money to keep | :03:23. | :03:38.
Well, do you know, the very first stakeholder meeting we had | :03:39. | :03:42.
wasn't about money and yet they were quoting ?14 | :03:43. | :03:44.
They say only ten people per day use the minor injury unit, | :03:45. | :03:49.
However, what these figures do not tell you is how many people | :03:50. | :03:54.
presented themselves to the minor injury unit only to find it | :03:55. | :03:56.
And it's never been adequately staffed. | :03:57. | :04:04.
Do you feel that people in rural areas are getting | :04:05. | :04:07.
a second-class service these days for is that the perception? | :04:08. | :04:10.
I think if these plans go ahead and these areas don't | :04:11. | :04:22.
have minor injuries, well, Withernsea will get | :04:23. | :04:25.
demoted service you have to make an appointment for, | :04:26. | :04:27.
that is a second-class health service and I think | :04:28. | :04:29.
And finally, if you were sitting down tonight with Jeremy Hunt | :04:30. | :04:37.
I would say to him these read carefully all the evidence we've put | :04:38. | :04:42.
before you and let's have common sense prevailing, please, | :04:43. | :04:44.
because the people in this area deserve far better. | :04:45. | :04:47.
It's a National Health Service, it is not a collective health service. | :04:48. | :04:49.
Very good to talk to you tonight, thank you very much indeed. | :04:50. | :04:52.
The trial of a holiday park owner who was accused of mis-selling | :04:53. | :05:05.
retirement chalets near Beverley collapsed this afternoon. | :05:06. | :05:09.
William Flannigan was accused of selling holiday chalets | :05:10. | :05:11.
at Lakeminster Park without planning permission to let people live | :05:12. | :05:14.
But a judge at Hull Crown Court ruled today, | :05:15. | :05:18.
after a nine week trial, that there was no case to answer. | :05:19. | :05:26.
Plastic rubbish that ends up washed up on beaches on the East Coast | :05:27. | :05:29.
will soon be collected and converted into new bottles. | :05:30. | :05:31.
Environmental campaigners say plastic in our seas | :05:32. | :05:33.
is damaging to marine life, but that now it will | :05:34. | :05:35.
Our Environment Correspondent Paul Murphy has this report. | :05:36. | :05:46.
Here in Cleethorpes, Jez is one of the hundreds | :05:47. | :05:48.
of volunteers getting involved in Beach Clean Week. | :05:49. | :05:50.
It's never-ending task as each tide brings in more rubbish. | :05:51. | :05:53.
First of all we're trying to raise awareness of beach cleans and then | :05:54. | :06:00.
We're looking to start to involve design for social change to try | :06:01. | :06:06.
and get into people's minds to not have plastic or to recycle. | :06:07. | :06:11.
The voluntary effort like this recent clean-up is considerable, | :06:12. | :06:15.
but then so is the size of the problem. | :06:16. | :06:19.
The scientific estimates are pretty sobering. | :06:20. | :06:21.
There are now more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans | :06:22. | :06:25.
and by 2050, there will be more plastic in the seat than fish. | :06:26. | :06:27.
That's why this packaging company in Portugal is trying | :06:28. | :06:32.
Instead of using new plastic, they are using plastic waste | :06:33. | :06:38.
East Coast litter will soon be recycled in this way. | :06:39. | :06:45.
We started to wonder OK, we are making plastic bottles | :06:46. | :06:48.
ourselves, so what can we actually do to start to become part | :06:49. | :06:51.
of the solution to ocean plastic instead of being part | :06:52. | :06:56.
The Ocean Bottle Project is also an awareness raising campaign. | :06:57. | :07:01.
The design of the bottle takes its inspiration | :07:02. | :07:04.
from the plankton that are being harmed by plastic waste. | :07:05. | :07:07.
Due to the pollution of our oceans, the population of this tiny organism | :07:08. | :07:12.
is reducing dramatically and the consequence of that is that | :07:13. | :07:15.
if they disappeared, the overall marine ecosystem | :07:16. | :07:19.
Up and down the coast, dedicated volunteers | :07:20. | :07:27.
are doing their bit but longer term solutions aren't as simple. | :07:28. | :07:31.
Changing attitudes to using and reusing plastics | :07:32. | :07:35.
Paul is with me now - what difference will a few | :07:36. | :07:40.
Well, it's part practical solution and part marketing campaign. The | :07:41. | :07:57.
bottle project people want consumers to be more aware of what we are | :07:58. | :08:02.
doing with our plastic, to recycle plastic bottles more, to ensure it | :08:03. | :08:06.
does not go into landfill and out to the eventually but it is quite | :08:07. | :08:10.
telling that it is now commercially viable to harvest waste from beaches | :08:11. | :08:13.
and make them into bottles there's and make them into bottles there's | :08:14. | :08:18.
change that is effected today will change that is effected today will | :08:19. | :08:21.
make many years to feed through and have a airing on the amount of | :08:22. | :08:25.
plastic in the sea. That is the depressing part about it but the | :08:26. | :08:26.
message is that people can do message is that people can do | :08:27. | :08:28.
something about it. Teachers are being offered an extra | :08:29. | :08:30.
day off if they can't be bothered to work by a South Lincolnshire | :08:31. | :08:33.
school that says it's It's called a "duvet day" | :08:34. | :08:35.
and it's one of a series of extra incentives given | :08:36. | :08:39.
at the Long Sutton Community Primary School to try to get | :08:40. | :08:41.
people to work there. Earlier tonight I spoke to head | :08:42. | :08:44.
teacher Bill Lord who says very few I don't think anybody can | :08:45. | :08:47.
accuse our staff of slacking. It's looking after and making sure | :08:48. | :08:56.
that ultimately I've got a full staff very September, | :08:57. | :08:59.
which is so hard. Why is it so hard these days to get | :09:00. | :09:00.
teachers to come to Lincolnshire? Good salary, good place | :09:01. | :09:04.
to live, why is it so hard? Well, I mean, the major issue | :09:05. | :09:08.
is that young teachers tend to train in cities and then they want | :09:09. | :09:13.
the bright lights, they want to be able to go | :09:14. | :09:16.
and the bands at the weekends and so they are moving | :09:17. | :09:19.
to Peterborough, Nottingham and to Lincoln and it's hard to get | :09:20. | :09:27.
them to come down to But in Long Sutton, | :09:28. | :09:30.
a three-bedroom semi, Do you really need to offer more | :09:31. | :09:34.
incentives and yet another day Yeah, I mean we have offered | :09:35. | :09:39.
some fantastic jobs. We have offered interesting jobs | :09:40. | :09:43.
such as research lead, we have offered management positions | :09:44. | :09:46.
and we are averaging 0.8 And that included advertising | :09:47. | :09:49.
nationally, advertising using innovative ways including | :09:50. | :09:55.
using social media. We just can't get people to move | :09:56. | :09:57.
to our area very easily. We will have some of your responses | :09:58. | :10:06.
on that story tomorrow. Let's take a look at the weather now | :10:07. | :10:09.
with Abbie Dewhurst. Well, plenty of fine, dry weather | :10:10. | :10:14.
to be enjoyed this evening. Variable amounts of mostly low cloud | :10:15. | :10:18.
initially and then we will start to see more cloud building | :10:19. | :10:21.
from the north-west as we head Overnight temperatures ranging | :10:22. | :10:24.
from about five to seven Celsius, so a fairly chilly start | :10:25. | :10:27.
to the day tomorrow. I think we will see some initial | :10:28. | :10:29.
brightness, particularly for the far Then a cloud amounts will increase | :10:30. | :10:32.
and we could see the odd spot of light drizzle in the far west | :10:33. | :10:36.
of the region. Temperatures tomorrow will be up | :10:37. | :10:39.
at about 12 or 13 Celsius. That's it from us the night. Thank | :10:40. | :10:48.
you for watching. We are back on BBC One at breakfast from 6:25am. I will | :10:49. | :10:53.
be back on Wednesday at Look North. Take care, good night. | :10:54. | :11:01.
bit from the south, so we could get to 18 or higher on Sunday. Now the | :11:02. | :11:04.
national focus. Good evening, things are looking good in the next | :11:05. | :11:15.
few days, some pressure drifting in from the Atlantic, bringing some | :11:16. | :11:18.
finance settled with it. Just some questions about the amount of cloud | :11:19. | :11:22.
we will see under that. The cloud we saw the sea links gave rise to a | :11:23. | :11:25.
lovely sunsets are many areas. This is the view from one of our weather | :11:26. | :11:29.
watchers in Cornwall. Look at the tones in the sky in Warwickshire | :11:30. | :11:33.
this evening. Here is the satellite sequence which | :11:34. | :11:41.
shows it was pretty gloomy on the eastern side of England. Not much | :11:42. | :11:44.
rain, but a good swathe of sunshine for many early on. In the | :11:45. | :11:47.
north-west, showers. Gusty wind as well, northern Scotland seeing | :11:48. | :11:48. |
