Good evening.

0:00:070:00:08

The remains of a Medieval priest who died 700 years ago today have

0:00:080:00:12

been uncovered in Lincolnshire.

0:00:120:00:14

Archaeologists have been analysing remains found at Thornton Abbey.

0:00:140:00:18

The priest's gravestone was found near the altar of the 14th

0:00:180:00:21

century monastery hospital, and it even revealed his name,

0:00:210:00:24

as Matthew Bone reports.

0:00:240:00:28

Thornton Abbey.

0:00:280:00:31

A 14th century monastery in rural Lincolnshire with hidden secrets.

0:00:310:00:36

For the last six years archaeologists from the University

0:00:360:00:38

of Sheffield have been slowly unveiling its past.

0:00:380:00:43

Most recently the remains of a Medieval priest.

0:00:430:00:45

He died 700 years ago today.

0:00:450:00:50

His name was Richard De Whisperton.

0:00:500:00:51

As archaeologists, we find skeletal remains quite often,

0:00:510:00:54

but to actually find someone whose name you know and to know the date

0:00:540:00:59

of when they died and their position within society is very rare.

0:00:590:01:03

This place was built in 1193 and quickly became one

0:01:030:01:06

of the richest religious houses in England.

0:01:060:01:09

But that does not mean that Richard's life was easy.

0:01:090:01:12

He lived in a time which was known as the Great Famine,

0:01:120:01:15

and evidence from his skeleton suggests he had anything

0:01:150:01:17

but an easy life.

0:01:170:01:19

A slight dent in his skull shows he suffered violent trauma,

0:01:190:01:23

and a close look at his teeth reveal a period of stress or malnutrition.

0:01:230:01:27

He was around 35 years old when he died.

0:01:270:01:31

It's important because it gives us a little snapshot of the past

0:01:310:01:34

we wouldn't ordinarily have.

0:01:340:01:35

As archaeologists, the past is often nameless and faceless.

0:01:350:01:39

Here we can look at an individual, a named individual, we can find

0:01:390:01:42

out about their lives, and it kind of puts a bit of a

0:01:420:01:45

human face on a century that is, you know, a long time ago.

0:01:450:01:50

This find is part of a bigger project.

0:01:500:01:53

Last year 48 skeletons, many of them children,

0:01:530:01:56

were found at the same site.

0:01:560:01:58

When the research is complete, Richard's remains will be laid

0:01:580:02:01

to rest at a church in Barton-on-Humber.

0:02:010:02:10

A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after another man

0:02:100:02:13

was found with serious injuries outside a bar in Driffield.

0:02:130:02:16

Police were called to Market Walk by ambulance staff early this morning.

0:02:160:02:19

The 24-year-old victim was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary

0:02:190:02:22

with head injuries, which aren't life-threatening.

0:02:220:02:25

Police are questioning a 39-year-old man.

0:02:250:02:29

British Steel in Scunthorpe are taking on more staff to create

0:02:290:02:32

the next generation of steelworkers.

0:02:320:02:35

20 new trainees are starting at the plant in conjunction

0:02:350:02:38

with North Lindsey College who will help them complete

0:02:380:02:41

their official qualifications.

0:02:410:02:43

The company recently announced that it had ended 2016 in profit

0:02:430:02:46

and had taken on more than 350 new employees

0:02:460:02:49

since it was launched in June.

0:02:490:02:53

Work has begun to replace a number of timber groynes on the beach

0:02:530:02:56

at Withernsea which have reached the end of their working lives.

0:02:560:02:59

The wooden structures help sand to be collected

0:02:590:03:01

on the beaches which then act as natural flood

0:03:010:03:03

defences for the town.

0:03:030:03:05

The work is due to be finished by the end of the summer.

0:03:050:03:09

Peatland areas near Goole could benefit from a new ?10 million

0:03:090:03:12

grant scheme announced by the government.

0:03:120:03:14

The money is being given to sites with the greatest potential

0:03:140:03:17

for greenhouse gas reduction.

0:03:170:03:19

The moorland in Thorne and Crowle is one of the most important peat

0:03:190:03:23

vegetation areas in the country.

0:03:230:03:25

Wildlife trusts and charity projects will be able to bid

0:03:250:03:27

for a portion of the grant.

0:03:270:03:31

Bikers have delivered Easter chocolate to children

0:03:310:03:33

in a North Lincolnshire hospital for the ninth year in a row.

0:03:330:03:36

140 members of the Scunny Bikers rode together to Scunthorpe General.

0:03:360:03:43

They unloaded a cargo of chocolate eggs and toys donated

0:03:430:03:47

by local supermarkets.

0:03:470:03:49

They'll be handed out to patients on the children's ward.

0:03:490:03:53

I'm just absolutely amazed with today's turnout, 140 bikes,

0:03:530:03:56

a massive van full of toys, lots of local businesses

0:03:560:03:59

contributing as well.

0:03:590:04:01

It brightens up the children's days, and the families, really.

0:04:010:04:04

Obviously, being in hospital is very stressful at the best of times,

0:04:040:04:08

so having all of these donated to the ward is just fantastic.

0:04:080:04:13

In football, Lincoln City have taken another step

0:04:130:04:15

towards the Football League with a win at Gateshead.

0:04:150:04:18

The Imps fans celebrated after their team came

0:04:180:04:20

from a goal down to win 2-1.

0:04:200:04:23

They need just two more points from their last

0:04:230:04:26

three games to confirm the National League title.

0:04:260:04:29

They never die, they just keep going and going.

0:04:290:04:32

We said 1-1 there, we'll settle for 1-1.

0:04:320:04:34

In the end, 2-1, like Torquay!

0:04:340:04:36

It happens all the time, close to the end again, but we did it!

0:04:360:04:40

Another three points, one step closer!

0:04:400:04:41

It was just a shock, really.

0:04:410:04:43

None of us really believed it, we had sort of given up hope, but,

0:04:430:04:47

yeah, it was brilliant.

0:04:470:04:49

Today was the last day to see the Lego daffodils

0:04:490:04:51

in Hull city centre.

0:04:510:04:52

The display of almost 2,000 plastic plants

0:04:520:04:55

in King Edward Square is part of the City of Culture year.

0:04:550:04:59

The flowers will be sold off tomorrow afternoon.

0:04:590:05:04

Time for the weather forecast.

0:05:040:05:07

Hello there, good evening.

0:05:070:05:08

Quite a cold night in store tonight.

0:05:080:05:11

Quite a cold night in store tonight.

0:05:110:05:11

We have some showers around at the moment,

0:05:110:05:13

those showers gradually sinking southwards over the next few hours.

0:05:130:05:16

Some of them could be heavy for a time, but behind

0:05:160:05:18

the showers, clear skies.

0:05:180:05:19

It is under those clear skies that we are expecting

0:05:190:05:22

temperatures to dip to two, three degrees in towns,

0:05:220:05:24

but in sheltered rural spots, perhaps -2 or -3 Celsius.

0:05:240:05:28

So, a chilly start to Tuesday morning, one or two showers along

0:05:280:05:30

the coast first thing, but it is looking like a decent day.

0:05:300:05:33

Plenty of sunshine, the sunshine turning a bit hazy from the west

0:05:330:05:36

as we head through the afternoon, and a top temperature

0:05:360:05:39

around 10-11 degrees, feeling much like today.

0:05:390:05:42

As we head through the rest of the week, there will be plenty

0:05:420:05:45

of dry and fine weather in the forecast, staying quite

0:05:450:05:48

cloudy from Wednesday.

0:05:480:05:50

Highs of 14 degrees by the end of the week.

0:05:500:05:56

That's

0:05:560:05:57

That's all

0:05:570:05:57

That's all from

0:05:570:05:57

That's all from us,

0:05:570:05:57

That's all from us, good

0:05:570:05:57

That's all from us, good night.
